Great video, thanks. I’ve just bought an engine that’s been sat in a shed for donkeys years. It’s from a herald 13/60 to replace the horrid longer stroke 1500 in my mg midget.
It came with a very poorly looking 25d4. Most bits cleaned up ok but the cam was seized to the shaft, weights stuck, etc. I’ve got it apart eventually but with significant damage. I will have to make a new plate and spring hangers etc for the bottom of the cam if I ever want to use it. Probably not
Worth all of the effort I’ve gone to because it took me a day to find your video and realise the vacuum unit is missing ! I thought it was centrifugal only at first!
Oh well, it’s been fun messing around with and a learning experience!

Very timely as I'm just refurbishing the 25D distributor in my Sprite! Thank you.

The easiest way to put the centrifugal weights is ,put the weights on the distributor cam , then turn distributor upside down and place cam onto spindle . That’s how I taught hundreds of students in my Technical College motor vehicle classes , City & Guilds courses. It saves trying to get the pegs on the cam to line up with the holes in the weights. Give it a try ,hope it helps.

    Very helpful thank you.
I bought a chinese knock-off 25D (my car came without a distributor so no core). Gonna tare it down and make sure everything moves properly.

Best of luck, best to replace the points with some proper ones or convert to electronic ignition. The cheap ones have a tendency to fail unexpected within the first hundred miles.

It’s a power spark ever heard of them? What’s a good brand for points if you don’t mind me asking. I run a CDI box so points are no longer finicky (only used to trigger box no longer breaking much current)

@@millerignition yes have heard of them, I have something similar fitted to mine can’t quite remember now. Not entirely sure on brand of the points, it’s mainly the condenser that I’m aware is dodgy. I swapped an ancient condenser in from a used set of points to a set of new ones when I still ran points, never had a problem with the old as ones.

The vacuum advance wheel, is that an actual adjustment? Or do you just turn it until it clicks? Distributor is going in the car tonight. I will let you know how it runs with the dizzy on it. The powerspark had a wire jamming up the vacuum advance mechanism (wire was wedged tight up against the distributor cap) came with zero lube on anything and arrived with the points not lining up and also having a very large gap. Once these easily fixable things are addressed it looks ok.

Yes the advance wheel physically rotates the plate which the pickup or points are mounted to. This plate is free to move independently from the dizzy and when the wheel is turned it shifts it up or down advancing or retarding the timing. I remember I used a tiny cable tie to fasten the wires from the electronic ignition pickup to the old hole where the condenser went. Just so it doesn’t catch on anything. Best of luck, let me know how it goes!

Make sure to set the timing afterwards with a timing gun with the vacuum advance disconnected
