I reckon there was a writer on the show or even David Hewlett himself had an experience with someone with Alzheimer's, because the way David portrays Rodney in the episode is so realistic and exactly what it is like
John not letting him say goodbye made tears well up in my eyes and then the “Arthur” comment made me laugh out loud, and kept me from crying. Haha. Great scene.
This is my favorite of any Atlantis episode, any season, too. The moments when John is looking away from Rodney, the sadness in John's expression contemplating the loss are endearing, as is the moment he continues to look at Rodney when Rodney turns away. Despite the unpleasant & unprofessional things Joe Flanigan said about SGU, I have to respect and admire the skills displayed in this moment in Atlantis - it moves me everytime I see it.
If you've ever seen The Best of Both Worlds, Guinan makes a comment that somehow resonates with this scene... "They took him from us, a piece at a time." Yet somehow, while that comment rang true it never captured what it meant to lose someone bit by bit. This episode captured it.
I don't care how much time passes... this episode, and THIS SCENE, will always... always... get to me. *tears of sadness and joy all at once* Good lord, I love them.
This is such a beautiful and sad episode at the same time. Every time I'm watching it, really every time I constantly have tears in my eyes. It is just such a masterpiece of art.
Lord, this whole episode makes me want to cry and hug whoever is sitting next to me. They are so adorable, their friendship is the best! Not to mention the superb acting by both Hewlett and Flanigan!
*tears* Best Atlantis scene EVER!!! John is such a good friend to Rodney. I love how he tells Rodney...let's just hang out. I thought that was a sooo sweet! I think John got choked up there when Rodney wanted to say good bye and he didn't want to.
Star gate SG-1 is my all time favorite show and Atlantis is a close second. My father died from Alzheimer’s, and I cry every time I watch the Ep's "The Shrine" To me it is the best Ep's out of all of the Star Gate Franchise.
Hell yeah! John and Rodney have the cutest friendship ever. I love this episode--and like everyone else is saying, they're both AMAZING actors. Atlantis forever!
I don't normally watch clips from tv shows that I like but with this I just can't help it. This episode can bring me to tears in just a few short minutes. It's so terrifying a possibility to loose one's mind that to see it played out by a character who depends so much on his mind, it's horrifying. Why is it that the good shows which tackle this sort of thing are the first to be cancelled when other's are left on air which are basically worthless?? I don't get that. :( SGA Forever.
this was such a good episode and I think this was one of the best in storyline but also in the acting division. David Hewlett did play his part amazingly. When I watched the episode I was really seeing a different side to his acting. Also loved that all seemed so concerned about him which showed people how close they all had gotten at that point specially john and rodney. Real shame they cancelled the show and even worse cancelled the planned movie! :(
I'm definitely no McKay/John Shipper - urgh, the very thought. But I love these two scenes which are the perfect depiction of their friendship. I laughed so hard at the Arthur joke at the end of the pier scene I almost broke a rib. Wonderful.
if you watch the series you see john is always protecting mckay from himself and he goes to bat for him even when he is about to blow up a solar system. he beleives in mckay
A most adorable set of scenes and I just about died at the Arthur moment then the giggles the two of them got for it. John just about falls off the pier. ^_^ Course, I was hooked to the scene as soon as I found myself asking, "...Is that a panda? John wears panda pjs..." I found this astonishingly amazing.
Long ago I watched the Star Trek TNG episode the Inner Light. I was so moved by it that searched tv shows on Netflix/Hulu to get more of such powerful screenwriting. I just recently landed on this gem and it was tenfold of the Inner Light. Funny I only seem to find such gems in the sci-fi genre. This scene reminds me of the saying, "Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you."
I'm going to be honest, Mckays massive ego and cowardice could get a bit tiredsome at times. But the actor, David Hewlett, really shined during these more serious moments like this one where Mckay slowly developed Alzhaimer's like symptoms.
This is my favorite scene of any episode of Atlantis. You don't even have to be a McShep shipper to love it, because it just highlights beautifully the friendship between these two which is part of the core of the show. Not to mention David Hewlett is amazing in this episode. Couldn't agree more with you on how canceling this is a colossal mistake.
somewhere out there, there is a parallel universe where they didn't cancel atlantis and they got to see the team having awesome adventures even after they landed the city in san fran bay on earth ........... :(
The loyalty between Sheppard & McKay is pretty much like that between Jack O'Neill & Daniel in SG1, & Rodney is egotistical & prompt to toot his own horn a lot, & at the same time likeable.
When Rodney was first introduced way back in SG-1 I thought he was some insufferable asshole. Always right, always full of himself, never willing to accept making mistakes, always placing blame on others, etc. Throughout the course of SG-1, his limited appearances eventually made him a little bit more likeable, but he was still basically a gigantic douche. By the time Atlantis rolled around, it was really interesting seeing the changes his character made throughout it. It's hinted at constantly throughout both SG-1 (and deliberately revealed a number of times in Atlantis) that his real character is more than what he lets on. On the outside he acts like an insufferable dickwad but on the inside he's actually extremely caring and passionate about his friends, all of whom he considers family. This episode was a great culmination of all of his character development, and it was wonderful seeing such a dynamic character change in a way that felt eerily real throughout the series.
spartan456 the thing is he wasnt with a team or with sheppard. He didnt understand what it meant to work with people or having a brother like john. That is why i admired their dynamic.
this episode made me cry the entire time and laugh at all the funny stuff while still crying and then cry for hours after finishing watching the episode how this episode won nothing or the actors didnt win any kind of awards is such a travisty!
I loved the entire ep. It was proof that Rodney wasn't such an insufferable wind bag after all. It also put me in mind of " Flowers for Algernon " / " Charly ".
Rodney & John were kind of like Atlantis' version of Jack & Daniel, w / a few differences. Rodney had a big ego, but he was likeable, kind of like Charles Emerson Winchester III from MASH. I wish I could find the entire episode on - line. I truly especially liked this one.
knoxvilleguy2 i liked how daniel was smart and oneill was a soldier so the jock nerd relationship dodnt work so far but daniel turned into jack, fit and funny.
Probably the best SGA episode in my book. I was slightly annoyed by the setup tho since technically they should have just been able to swim through the Stargate because an old SG1 episode set up the rule that water wont go through the gate if its submerged.
Blueninja33: I loved the scenes where they all rallied around Rodney. He's usually full of himself & his ego. But this time he was vulnerable & scared. This WAS " Flowers For Algernon ", & good !
I remember when I was younger next door lady came to ring the doorbell, she thought she is on a cruise ship and very confused why the ship was on such a heavy ocean. I took her to her place and she had a phonebook, we called her relatives who came there, she had one of these alzheimer attacks it seems.
I think its because they forget that its not just about battles and stuff. There are relationships and it makes you feel and think alot. Values and beliefs that continue across both series.
I'd still take SGU over the Battlestar Galactica remake which the producers of SGU wanted to create a more grittier show closer in style to that show instead of the two earlier ones in the franchise.
This is a big turn around for John .. he came to be friends with Rodney who he definitely disliked from day 1 .. as it was for Rodney who found humility and empathy since his arrival in Atlantis
I reckon there was a writer on the show or even David Hewlett himself had an experience with someone with Alzheimer's, because the way David portrays Rodney in the episode is so realistic and exactly what it is like
I don't know about the writer's but kate David's sister (Jeannie) she said in an interview that both of their grandmothers had Alzheimer's
John not letting him say goodbye made tears well up in my eyes and then the “Arthur” comment made me laugh out loud, and kept me from crying. Haha. Great scene.
just a great piece of acting. The best scenes are where you need to laugh while trying to push your tears away.
The Arthur line, is that a reference to something or is McKay just having fun at his own expence?
@@carbonscythe It’s a joke. John only laughs after they meet eyes, as if he’s checking to be sure it’s a joke, then they burst into laughter.
This is what friendship should be.
This is my favorite of any Atlantis episode, any season, too. The moments when John is looking away from Rodney, the sadness in John's expression contemplating the loss are endearing, as is the moment he continues to look at Rodney when Rodney turns away.

He really liked the episode.

David should have won some kind of award for this episode. Exceptional acting all around.
Such a great scene, I love the connection these characters have.
Lord, this whole episode makes me want to cry and hug whoever is sitting next to me. They are so adorable, their friendship is the best! Not to mention the superb acting by both Hewlett and Flanigan!

The slashers degrade the great friendships on the show. All the team have lost family to estrangement and/or death, and become like family.
if you watch the series you see john is always protecting mckay from himself and he goes to bat for him even when he is about to blow up a solar system. he beleives in mckay

Loved that last line, "your a good friend, Arthur." The best line in my opinion, as well as the SG1/Atlantis Mag I have xD
It was improvised by David on the spot!
"You're a good friend Arthur"

"I drink beer?"
"a lot."
Although neither would ever admit it, they truly were the best of friends.
This is probably my favorite episode. Not only is it well written, but it shows how much Ronin cares.
You are a good friend Arthur
i actually cried during this episode. first time for a tv show.
It's scenes like these that makes me miss Stargate Atlantis so much! =\ It had a darn good cast!
this episode along with the tao of rodney and sunday made me cry so hard

I think there were books that actually continued on with the Atlantis stories.
@@AdeptKing I hadn't heard of any books that continued the Stargate Atlantis series. Thanks for mentioning it. I'll search for them now.
God, i love this scene! This is why i love stargate... and always will!
cried too..
An epic eveidence for true frindship. That is, what made SGA such a great show.
I loved this Episode, Every time I watch it, I find myself both happy & very sad in parts. It never gets old.
Literally the saddest episode in any stargate TV show or movie.
I would agree, except for Meridian 😂
@@doraliciamendoza4859 Come on now. Heroes???
@@Jarsia True, that one is right up there too. Not to mention the series finale, I can't listen to Have You Ever Seen The Rain without being sad 😂
Meridian and Heroes are really close but for me it hurts more in this.
Why does this one only have 342 likes? There is nothing not to love about those two.
i did cry. within the first 10 seconds. lol. i love this scene. its so beautiful. i love their friendship
Great moments of Atlantis
The loyalty between Sheppard & McKay is pretty much like that between Jack O'Neill & Daniel in SG1, & Rodney is egotistical & prompt to toot his own horn a lot, & at the same time likeable.

This episode brought a tear to my eye :')
This was an awesome scene. Felt real and very unscripted (even thought it was!). I loved Kate's acting in this episode!
Actually, the last bit of him calling him Arthur was completely unscripted! But they loved it, so they kept it in :)
This scene has 1 dislike. How could anyone not like this scene where it shows 2 of the best characters bonding like real bros ?
Rodney & John were kind of like Atlantis' version of Jack & Daniel, w / a few differences. Rodney had a big ego, but he was likeable, kind of like Charles Emerson Winchester III from MASH.

his panda shirt is kinda cute^^
and of course McShep too ♥
I don't know why but Rodney's character reminds me a little of Robin Williams anyone else or just me?
Tortured genius seems about right.
I hated the Rodney character, but in this scene he finally became a sensible human to me
