What a fitting song for the movie, Tender Mercies. She brought out the heartbreak of losing a loved one literally and figuratively. It added a whole other layer to an already very good movie.

This whole on-stage scene in the Opry was just a wonderful piece of the movie that Betty tore apart like a diva. It was certainly a memorable highlight not to be missed. Such a contrast to when Duvall sings at a local dance hall.

One song, within a film, that should have been featured and sung full length. t had many meanings within Tender Mercies.

Lane Brody’s rendition is beautiful also but Ms Buckley’s film version is the best ever. Too bad they did not allow a full uninterrupted playing and interject conversation with faded singing.

I wish they had added the movie sound track version instead of this. That mix was better and frankly, she sang it with more depth.

Lane Brody sang it in the movie. It's on You Tube. Some versions have Spanish lyrics on the screen and another has her singing it live.

They never recorded the soundtrack with Betty due to "movie studio bureaucracy." So unfortunate. This version is from her London Concert with BBC.

@@mironstricz4747 Actually Betty sang it in the movie. But her version was not on the soundtrack album for contractual reasons, I imagine, so Lane Brody sang it on the album.

Surely someone could extract this from the movie soundtrack tapes and issue it in some format. It's really an emotional giant of a "lost song." This version is less direct in it's communication to the listener and more "Broadway stage." I still like it though. The long melody line grabs you and holds till the release on the words "over you."

Sorry to differ with you. Betty Buckley sang it in the movie
      Over You (1982)
Written by Austin Roberts & Bobby Hart
      Sung by Betty Buckley
      www.imdb.com/title/tt0086423/soundtrack?ref_=tt_trv_snd
Wikipedia has a carelessly written sentence: "Soon afterward, she [Brody] began charting her own singles, including the No. 15 country hit "Over You", which was featured in the film Tender Mercies and received a nomination for Best Original Song at 56th Academy Awards in 1984. Meaning the song, not the recording.

Just going by what's on the original vinyl jacket cover of the coundtrack. Brody's version sounds better and seems more like the one in the movie..

With best intentions and respect I'll just offer some additional comments:
      1) Betty Buckley emphatically has the voice more akin to that heard in the movie - much more dynamic and emphatic than Lane Brody who is more laid back and "country sweet."
      2) It is improbable they would have hired a primarily Broadway chanteuse for a small acting part in the film unless she were selected for her voice. Singing against type (but not against background - she was born in Texas) she is astounding. [From Wikipedia: "Betty Buckley attended a casting session in New York City and was chosen largely based on the quality of her singing voice; Beresford said that few of the actresses who auditioned for the role were able to sing.[12] Buckley was originally from Fort Worth, Texas, near the Grapevine Opry; when her concert scenes were filmed there, her whole family participated as extras.[24] Duvall said he thought Buckley perfectly conveyed the underlying frustration of a country singer and "brought a real zing to [the] part."[9]
      3) Buckley herself says she sang it in the film (3rd from last paragraph): www.bettybuckley.com/about/
      4) Buckley is listed on the credit scroll on the DVD of the film and as you saw on IMDB
      5) What MIGHT have happened with the vinyl record is that there were royalty and copyright conflicts and Brody was substituted. One thinks of the LP "soundtrack" issue of Easy Rider and Blade Runner just for starters. I don't own the LP - I have to go by your report.
      6) So it sounds like Brody had the hit country chart recording with a song from Tender Mercies and Buckley had the actual film recording.
[Up all night with Miron and Pal Joey] Good luck.

Lane Brody had a separately recorded Grammy nominated song of it.

Betty sang it in the movie but wasn't included in the soundtrack due to "movie studio bureaucracy." It's her song.
