I think they did, I've heard 3 theories and all of them happy in their own way. One is that Zack killed her and then himself, meaning they are together in a better place where the pain and trauma they've lived with are gone. 2 is that, and I've heard that the director of the show said this but I haven't seen it for myself, she didn't give him a smile and they ran away together since Zack wouldn't kill her till she smiled, and they lived happily. 3 is that Zack died in the electric chair and Rachel hallucinated and stabbed herself, which I believe to be impossible, due to no blood on the knife in the end, and the glass was inside the room, not outside as if she had broken it. But even if that was true, they would be together and again, no burdens of the trauma and pains they've both suffered in this world. I personally believe either the first or the second, but that's why it's an amazing ending. The viewer can choose which they think is a fitting ending for the story and they can choose which to believe. And they're all beautiful IMO. (I just wish they got to share a kiss on screen lol)
