I watched this wonderful Drama from it's inception. My mum and me would watch while father was reading in bed. It was our guilty secret as he was a liberator of the camps and many of his pals were incarcerated. The ones who came back well, never the same. Always, dying early though tropical diseases. When Dad had malaria flair ups the neighbours would bang on the walls. I am now watching reruns on Drama UK. If I had a criticism then the series didn't go far enough. A remake is due and the stories of the Japanese Guards should be incorporated.
Saw this on pbs when I was a girl in the 1980s. My mother would let me stay up past my bedtime to watch it because she thought it was such a powerful historical story. It was so much better quality than almost anything I had seen on American tv. Powerful and I remember names and scenes 35+ years later!
One afternoon in the late 80's while "surfing' the channels, I came upon an extraordinary scene of a group of women arguing in what looked like a barn. They were filthy, sweaty, they had sores, barely dressed in rags and I thought, "What is this?" By the end of the episode I'd realized that they were prisoners of the Japanese during WW2. I'd thought that, surely, this was a work of fiction. We hadn't learned of this at school. We'd learned about the the Bataan death march, the Burma railway and other atrocities of war, all involving men exclusively. Women were safe, back home, growing Victory gardens, rolling bandages and giving out doughnuts and coffee for the Red Cross. I now have a collection of books written by and about the women who actually lived through this nightmare (Betty Jeffrey's, amongst others). This series opened my eyes to the fact that the history of women has been ignored, minimized and obscured. Thanks to Lavinia Warner, Jill Hyem, Anne Valery and the marvelous cast for this accomplishment. The film, "Paradise Road" and the documentary, "Song of Survival" are well worth watching for anyone interested in this important piece of history. PS -- when I had my baby in 1991, I named her Jocelyn. Partly because I admired the character but mostly because it's such a beautiful name.
Best series I have ever seen to this day. Some time back it took a bit to find someone in Europe to put it on cds that would play here in the States. I still watch it every few years.
A incredible drama that’s still as wonderful today as it was in the 1980’s..I was only a kid back then and can remember the first episode, watching it with my mum..It was a drama we never missed..I would highly recommend anyone to watch Tenko as you wouldn’t be disappointed..The story and acting was and still is first rate..
I love this show. I taped every episode on video tape, which I still have. We saw it on A&E when they first began broadcasting. I also love Nanny, a show about a nanny in the 1930s.
My father introduced me to it and it because of this show that I decided to read up on real people who want though that experience it also opened my eyes as to how little those women and man prisoners are acknowledged When teaching ww2
My mother and I never missed an episode, we loved it, I was 16 when it first aired and I was hooked from the first episode, I loved Stephanie Beecham, loved the charactersr of Rose, Blanche,Marion, sister Ulrika etc. I wish they'd rerun it again
If you’re in the UK and have Sky TV the episodes are all on there as it’s currently being repeated on the Drama channel. I didn’t watch it when it aired originally so I’m binging it now I’m completely hooked! I’ve just watched episode 2 of Series 3
@@andreamanning1257 the series made me want to visit Singapore, especially Raffles Hotel. Then I saw Crazy Rich Asians movie and realized Singapore today is not the one in 1941. Lol
Have the DVD Box set of Tenko. There are no extras on it. This special is brilliant ! They should re release the box set and put this onto the end of it.
I never missed an episode! I now have the boxed set. I introduced my daughter to Tenko, who then introduced it to her partner. They also have the boxed set as they love it too! I have been lucky enough to meet some of the cast on different occasions. All are quite rightly very proud of Tenko!
Well; i just found this TENKO after long time searching. I was young around 10-12 years old watched TENKO and had fallen in love with the series. I came from Malaysia🇲🇾. Please send my regard to your auntie because this TENKO really my favourite series in the 1980's. I liked everyone ruled their roles successfully. HATS OFF to TENKO's actressess and crews too.🙏🖐️💕🇲🇾👍
Really enjoyed watching this. They simply do not make drama's as good anymore. It was interesting that they mentioned Secret Army at the beginning, sadly now forgotten due to the first series being lampooned by Allo Allo. Secret Army featured some very strong female characters, particularly Angela Richards as Monique Duchamps and Juliet Hammond-Hill as Natalie Chantrens. Forty years ago today the 4th episode of the third and final series of Secret Army attracted 19.5 million viewers. Imagine that today on a Saturday night! All three series are well worth watching if you haven't see it.
While I have enjoyed this "documentary" regarding the making of this fabulous series - it has been "billed" as full series -- a bit of bate and switch - I, too, am wondering why the "full series" has been removed....................... I live in the US and have tried to purchase the full series but have been saddened to learn that CDs, etc. are not available for playing in the US. - UGH
it is all on dailymotion for free so you can watch it on there if you want. that is how i watched it but i live in the UK so idk about US but give it a go.
I watched Tenko 30 years after it was made. It was fantatastic. I was glued to every episode.
I’m currently watching it for the first time and I’m hooked

I can’t believe Tenko has never been rebooted. It’s a really good show.
Definitely I remember watching this as a kid with my mum and I’ll never forget this show
Why do a reboot on a classic? Some of its storylines wouldn’t do well these days
That’s because Japan isn’t very fond of tenko and what it highlights to this day and because it doesn’t need to be rebooted it’s perfectly

I watched as a teen. Where can I find full episodes please that are free to air Australia?✌🇦🇺
Stephanie Cole was in her late 30s or early 40s when she was in Tenko, but she looked much older.
She often played women older than herself, in Waiting For God she was in her late 40s early 50s
Not managed to see it since the first time around. Not related to KR but from the same village. AR

25:50 announcer slipped into a cliche american accent when describing Cagney and Lacey.
This isn't the full episodes I clicked on.
It’s on TRUE now.
what happens when Waitrose moves out of a middle-class neighbourhood to be replaced by a Toyota Dealership..

in the US , Tenko was rebooted as 'Sex and the City'.
shame the voiceover is so SJW - prostitution was not controversial - it happened!
This is not what it is labelled as ..... so stupid why do people do this?
I've just been seen putting some spiders eggs and pinatas and a snowman eggnog shake in my barn 🏚️🧎🏼♀️
yeah a good feminist drama 😊
Eh? It was a good drama. Not feminist! Grrr!
Factual not feminist
Tenko show that people have to put up with English women like everyone else
