    David when seeing the pen in comparison to its smaller brother i didn't realise how big the actual pen was. I agree about the feed it should have been made of ebonite. An absolute stunner of a pen thanks for sharing.

    The Vermillion colour is stunning. ON CLEANING, I've found the absolutely fastest way of cleaning the CON-70 converter. It's the waterpic. Use warm water and a drop of soap. Cup your hand over the open end of the barrel and spray away, it's done in less than 1 minute. More like 30 seconds.

    Sweet pen, David! Congrats on acquiring it ... and I don't blame you one little bit for not doing a "giveaway" with it! Thanks for sharing it with us via Video. I very much like the fact that it's a super nice pen without being flashy or gaudy -- well done Pilot.
    I'd be interested in hearing more about the Urushi process (if/when you get the chance) both in general and more specifically: how do the artisans avoid the fairly common allergic reactions to the Urushiol when they work with it so much? I never had poison ivy until after I turned 50 even though I had been in contact with it during my younger years.

    Thanks for this review. I find odd that on your review of the Custom 845 I saw that the box of the 845 was nicer and had some goodies like the bulb for cleaning and this more expensive pen is a little bit "just the pen in the box".

    David thanks for the great video. Thanks for taking the time to create this content. I have been looking at the Custom Urushi but can't decide on the nib. I have a Pilot Custom 845 in medium. Is the Pilot Custom Urushi medium nib any wider than that on the Custom 845? I would appreciate any input you may have. Many thanks and I look forward to your next video.

  • @SandyToesStudio

    I would love to try the #30 nib but don't need the expensive Urushi finish. Do you know of a pilot pen with this nib size that has a better price point? I do have the Sailor King of Pen (M nib), are the nibs similar in softness or is the pilot #30 softer/flexier? Thank you!!!!

  • @JohnRuggero

    Fellow triangle area resident here. I have a custom 823 that started as a broad. Being the brave soul that I am, I ground it myself into a cursive italic. Now I love it even more with the greater line variation while retaining the buttery smoothness. I’ve been thinking about picking one of these up but am not sure if the advantage is enough compared to the 823. The thing that draws me to this is the size. I have larger hands and while I already own a 149 I just prefer the pilot nib. Also, losing the vac filler would be a bummer. Any thoughts? Also, I’m a piano tuner and I’m not sure if you own a piano but if you need a tuning I would love a tour of your amazing pen collection! Maybe we could barter. 😉

    I really wish Pilot, or Sailor, or "anyone" would take one of these oversize nibs and design it for Flex.
    Not that you "need" something that size to get good flex, but it just seems like a wasted opportunity, and I'm betting they would sell more if there were any kind of functional advantage to the Custom Urushi. As-is reviews seem to indicate the plain vanilla Custom 74 with a SF nib is as good as anything else that Pilot makes (I'd probably go for the 742 though just for one step larger nib and body, even though it's a 60% cost increase with little to no functional value).

  • @phildo864
    @phildo864 5 років тому

    Does anyone know why the section, finial, and tail cap aren't Urushi? Is there a functional reason? Or was it a way to cut costs?

    Thank you for the review. I have one in broad and the nib is glorious. Writes soft like a western medium. It’s definitely one of the best nibs I own. I question whether the barrel may be the only part made of ebonite. The cap seems like urushi coated plastic to me. Other than that, I am in full agreement it’s worthy of being Pilot’s flagship pen.

    The ebonite (Hard Rubber) are not injection molded, they are material that need to be machined to form the desired shape. that"s why its very hard to have the feed made of ebonite in mass production.

    Great pen and review, David! I pulled the trigger and bought this pen. Question: any issues if I use other inks than Pilot ones? I got a Graf von Faber Castell Carbon Black ink, any issues using this ink? Would it void Pilot warranty or would it harm the pen in any way? Would it be a good fit to this pen? Thanks!

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  7 місяців тому

      In my opinion, this warning from pen manufacturers is to protect them from folks who might put any corrosive, hand-made concoction in their pen and claim that it's the pen's fault. Any well-known, mass-market ink should be fine.

  • @lez7767
    @lez7767 6 років тому

    That is one fantasmagorical pen David and I would have one if I had the money, but I don't intend to sell body parts to get one... My hands hurt when I write so I favour fatter pens such as this but have to settle for the Jinhao 159 type and a certain Italix pen which weighs in at 65g capped, yes I did say 65... But its a nice fattun, Pilot ink of course in such a pen which I do have but for the folks in the US who like the Iroshizuku colour but not the price... Noodlers Black Swan in Australian Roses is close but not as bright maybe Black Swan in English roses would be closer..
    ( my opinion OK, which won't suit everyone) . BTW Noodlers inks here cost at least twice as much. - Amazon, eBay, Pure Pens if you want to see how much Nathan's Stuff costs us... I digress, the nib on this pen... Is it the biggest ??? Because I thought Sailor pens had the biggest ones... but its stunningly incredably large and the Con70 is the definate choice to feed it. With my Con70 on my Pilot 912..... I stay with the ink colour family so I'm not spending forever cleaning it (Red/Brown)
    I think this is one of the nicest black oversized pens I've seen, SBRE has two big red urushi pens which are stunning but I like this because it looks like a pilot pen just bigger with all the trimmings I mean... If you get what I'm trying to say.
    Thanks for another pen revisited, it was good.
    Best wishes to all pen people

They go for ¥70000 in Osaka (the Sailor KOP Ebonite is the same price) but ended up with the more generic Pelican M1000 which I got for a good price as well (¥52000. I just wish the Pilot had an ebonite grip. I’ll be saving up for an Eboya and a trip to Tokyo next.

    Still I think there no advantage and my first favorite pen is custom 845. Why? First nice size for daily use and carrying conveniently in pocket besides reasonable price. However I heard this pen has offered for 760$ in some deals but I didn't see myself. Even 760 is a lot. If the benchmark is urushi lacquer then 845 would be satisfying and I guess nibs in both models are identical
