I'd say instead of only practice, try to do more masterpieces! Of course practice is important but don't _only_ practice but also _actually create_ art. Through each piece you learn more and more, you also learn something you don't get from just practicing and it's _how to finish a piece_ and everything in between. Stay motivated! 💖
Yeah even though it might not be a masterpiece, atleast you’ve finished it and can be proud of yourself for pushing through, it’s motivating for me meanwhile doing a lot of practicing on page is when actually practicing

This is really great. I used this practice schedule and it really helped me to improve. Even if I skipped it sometimes because of schoolwork, it made me improve so much faster. Stuff I struggled with, like hands and how fabrics drape, I can now draw so much better, so thank you
I started with anime as well, when I was a kid I just copied photos of the characters, but after a few years of doing that I realized that art to me was just something I could "show off", it wasn't a real passion. But when I was 17 I wen't to my first art class (teacher was Glenn Vilppu) and that class taught me how to appreciate art and what art really means. Since then I've been drawing every single day (1-13 pages a day), studying the Masters, anatomy, and the principles of art and I can say I've improved drastically and I found a passion that is stronger than I could ever imagine. You could say I am completely infatuated with everything art. By the way I like the colors in your piece. :3
MyArtJourney Any advice for improvement for beginners? Like whst should we learn first? What's the most important thing to learn that I can apply to anything?
Cherry Wabbit Cherry Wabbit Draw from life and if you haven't yet, learn the basics. I underestimated how important that was when I first began. And something you can apply to everything is a certain technique, that's starting with the movement of the thing you're drawing (gesture) and slowly building it up adding form until it's done. One thing I always used to do was start with the eyes and that ended up making my drawings really stiff, but if you start with the movement and then draw out everything at once (getting the big forms and going to smaller and smaller details) your drawing will be much more coherent and free. Another thing, studying from the Great Masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer, Rembrandt ect. is always a good idea. As for UA-cam channels that aid in my drawing I go to, Proko, Fine Art Academy, Michael Clarida, Vilppu Store, Alphonzo Dun, Art Mentors, and Glenn Vilppu. All these channels help me to grow in my skills. :)
i just wanna say you inspire me so much, last night i was just re watching your 30 days of art series while drawing. i ordered prisma colours for the first time two days ago and they arrived yesterday. i just wanna thank you so much. i recently took art for my gcse's (i turned 13 recently btw) and i want to be like you when i grow up. i think when i'm older i will experiment with oil paints since they seem beautiful and the way you build up the gradual colour and shapes. i just want to thank you. so so much. i love you and you are truly a blessing to this world.
Ted-ed pretty recently released a video in how to practice efficiently on pretty much anything, and the method includes art. It shows through evidence, experiments, and science that to get better at a skill, you simply need to *think* about doing it. Like imagine yourself drawing something but not actually drawing. I know it sounds crazy but it actually works, they did a real experiment that showed results. I do this a lot when I am not able to draw.
Slipping into the Carat Cake life There has been many decreasing from the wild.Only a few remain but, very rarely one comes into your life.If they do,you must praise them.
I love the color palette of this painting so much! I've been enjoying magenta more than ever before for some reason. This is one of my favorite paintings you have done. You are inspiring me to do more oil painting!
Hi Happy, your studio sessions are always so inspiring and encouraging. Thank you so much. I am not artistically trained so all I do is based on my hobby. I make myself learn along the way with video tutorials like yours and they have been so helpful. Sometimes I feel that my visual impairment is limiting me in the things I can do. But often, I get encouragement from my friends and family. And I have started making more art and art related videos. I feel that I am now so much more confident in the things I do. Thank you so much! :)
I love watching the process of your paintings because it gives me a much deeper appreciation of final piece. I always like the new paintings you share, but I feel like I fall in love with them after watching the timelapse
Long time lurker here, just wanted to say, although every painting you make is beautiful, this one stands out so much to me. those colors are on point. I didn't think you could improve since you're pretty much at the top of your game, but since you probably don't notice your own progress: Yes, you are getting noticeably better.
I was always listening from everywhere things like "artist have a crazy life" "artist dont have to do a much" etc etc.... people dont realize its lot about learning, lot about having courage to do things and more and more.
I LOVE this painting sooooo much!!! It may be my all time favorite of yours. I can't quite pinpoint exactly what it is, possibly the cool dark vibe, and the skeletal structure of the face. To me this figure could represent the link between life and death, or even serve as a portal between the two. I just love it!! It's so beautiful and intriguing.
I used to just copy or trace over my favorite cartoons too. And now ive started to take drawing seriously and its so annoying. I feel like im stuck in this phase and i see no improvement in my art. I've decided to practice the basics and draw more still life before I do portraits. And what do you think about the idea that we should learn to draw a realistically before we stylize our art? I never learned to draw realistically. It would be great if you could make video on that. Explaining were to start if you want to improve your art.
I stay up all night doing my assignment , hearing your voice . It's so relaxing and inspired me 💞🌻 I always trying to be improve with my art by listen to your advice 🌸🌸 Thank you to be existed in this world 🌌🦄
YOU ARE MY INSPIRATION! YOUR ART INSPIRED ME TO DRAW FROM MY MIND WITHOUT A REFERENCE AND I LOVE IT! NOW WHEN J DONT KNOW WHAT TO DRAW I JUST LOOK AT YOUR ART AND IT COMES! YOU ARE SUCH AN INSPIRATION I LOVE YOU AND
A thing that helped me a lot when it came to getting better in my art, is going to a public area and just draw anything you see there, like people, tables, birds, trees, anything.
your the first artist that I know of who says to not trace others artwork to practice drawing. I used to trace a lot but my work never looked like mine when I did that so I stopped. I wasted a full year tracing but never again will I trace another's art work. and I was wondering when are you going to do another art and chat?? I love art and chat. I love listening to you ramble while I'm busy at work on my own drawings. I love your art so much. keep on keeping on!!!!
Thank you for this soothing video. Art work and paintings really do help me with my mental health so this means a lot to me. You are doing a great job keep it up 👍
Yes thank heavens for back to school!! Many peaceful painting sessions to come! 😂😂 This piece along with your others, is beautiful! Also, thank you for your suggestions and advice on improving ones art. I have been struggling with facial proportions in some ways and trying to find a balance. This made me realize I probably need to take a step back a little bit and refine a few skills before tackling faces full on. I really to dive into human anatomy a lot further another words lol. 😘😘 Thank you again and have a great day! 😎
Kera Hartlen Drawing/studying eyes, the nose, ears, mouth, ect separately really helped me out in drawing complete faces. I like to study them separately and then put them all together. That along with studying a life skull model has helped me tremendously.
Yes that is what I started with but my issues is putting them all together with placement. I am determined though, I know I am close. I can create some that I am happy with and some that make me go woah what is that! Lol thank you for your advice. It is very kind of you. 😄
My pleasure! I hope you figure it out! That is the fun after all! X3 Oh and just in case you haven't heard of him, there's an artist on UA-cam named Proko, his videos are extremely informative about human anatomy and much more, it amazes me on how much free information he puts out. Now if you have heard of him just forget what I just said! Lol XD Anyway, have a lovely day! :)
I am not a pro, but my art isnt extreamly realistic, but i am improved a lot in a year, i started by tracing and i learnt much more than if i didnt trace, its not about tracing its about our mind if we are posing to learn or just mug up ! So you know everyones different, we all use various methods for developing our art in different way . THATS y we cant say tracing is bad completely, but i completely agree with what you say about copying art and not actually learning from it ! Thankyou so much HAPPY D.ARTIST , you are the inspiration for all of us.❤❤❤❤always here to support.
I really think you are so sweet to give the same advices over and over and over again. Seriously, what's with kids and youngsters these days? "How do I improve my art?" Well, the same way every (really, EVERY) other artist did: Use your brain! And your eyes. Take a look at your art, find the flaws, find out how you can eradicate them and/or improve what you're bad at, get yourself some learning materials (on youtube, if you want to, but I'd recommend books. Never hurts to freshen up your knowledge now and then), learn the theory, and then: practice, practice, PRACTICE! You wanna learn anatomy? There are tons of amazing learning books about it, about the skeletton, bones, muscles, joints, proportions, etc. Read it, and then go drawing from real life, be it real people or statues or photos, and also try to apply your theoretical knowledge without reference. THAT is how you improve. Boring? Yes. No fun? Yes. Takes forever? Yes. If art is your passion, you won't have to force yourself, because you WANT to do that to improve. If it's just a hobby or for fun, than just keep on doing what you like to do, but don't expect great improvements at your weak points if you draw only for fun and what you like all the time, even after many years. And if someone wants to get offended or triggered by this post: Sorry, not sorry. I'm not american to sugarcoat every letter I write for you to feel better. I'm german and we call things by their names. Just saying.
This is so beautiful! Im in 💗 with this one! Thank you so much for putting your own time in your videos to help us learn new techniques ( and as a young artist, this helps me so much🙂), youre a real inspiration~❤
I love your style so much. I've been watching your videos to help me get my art out there. Is there anyway you can make a video on how you make your videos? Now I've got all the gear to make videos for my UA-cam channel I'm just trying to figure everything out.
Loved your painting....i did something like this in water color a while back :) what did you paint this on....and what is your favorite medium to use with oils..Thanks ...
I love your paintings so much! Although, i do think copying and tracing are good tools for beginners as long as they arent claiming it's their own work. I feel like tracing a line drawing of something like a realistic face can teach really important techniques about where to place shadows and values as there is already a reference for them. I think starting to draw/paint can be very intimidating so working from a reference/copying the reference can be like a singer doing a cover of someones song.. it can give that person the experience of a musicians vocal technique as well as teach song structure before they start writing they're own melody and lyrics.. I totally get that it'd be frustrating for artists to have their work copied but i dont think there's any harm in someone admiring your work so much that it inspires them to recreate it. I think the issue lies with fraudulent recreations or claiming as their own design on social media
I agree It is hard to find time to practice. I go to art school but I'm studying Film not fine art or design or anything like that. I will definitely take your advice onboard ☺️❤
I'm just starting with oil and it's not something I'm used to so I'm just diving headfirst. It's hard to blend and such but it takes time. I've drawn forever but painting is such another animal. I usually use water colors but I want to transition to oil. :) love ur vids
Actually doing master studies are supposed to be very helpful in learning composition and color theory. Especially if one wishes to learn the techniques of the masters of the past.
I think no matter how experienced we are as artists when we go to paint or draw, we should always think of ourselves as practicing because we should never think we're as good as we can get, but should instead be thinking we can always get better.
I recently just bought a pack of oil paints(Marie's)and after I tried them, they actually dried almost instantly like acrylics.I just added a bit of turpentine to the paint and applied to a primed surface(wood).Did I do something wrong or are my paints wrong or something? Please let me know what I should do.Should I use some Linseed oil??
When she said the question that in every platform she got asked how did she get better in art, and she also said there's no word to describe it. I was like obviously there's a word, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Then 20 seconds later she said most of artists would say PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and I was like "GIRL HOWD YOU KNOW"
Thanks Happy, great video and amazing art! How do you paint all those tiny details? I can't figure out how to do that in paints or colored pencils and I want to improve.
See I did pencil drawings of people for two years in pencil and I practiced my still life in graphite and such but I don't think I mastered it.. I'm still doing pencil drawings of course but I started using oils, first black and white for a few moths and now colour.. Idk if I'm ready.. Would there be a way for me to show you my art and you tell me what I need to improve on and focus on?
"learn the fundamentals, learn anatomy, learn perspective, shading, to be good enough to be professional artist" jean michel basquiat: "HOLD MY BEER!!!!"
Completely unrelated comment- I got onto team touchstone!!! That's the rock climbing team at the gym where I climb. You might have heard of it, Berkeley Ironworks? My family lives in the bay area too. I'm on the intermediate team and their non-climbing workouts are super tough.
I disagree with what you said about copying artwork. I do 2 things. 1. For line art with a brush, I print out mucha's art with the lines lightly printed. Then with my nib or brush: go over the lines (with a colored ink. Bright Green or red.). I also do the same for Adam Hughes and Todd McFarlane. 2. Master studies. Can't stress them enough. You learn so much from the masters whether it's a landscape, portrait, full illustration, or still life of theirs. They're masters for a good reason and the best way to learn from them is to replicate their art. By doing so, you learn their decision making and process.
DarkSamuraiX1989 I was going to say the same. Tracing/copying/replicating other's art can help you learn realisim and anatomy a lot faster and more efficient than drawing the same thing over and over. Its useless to tell someone off a way that could help them improve faster.
Great video. I think there is SOME merit, however, in tracing, IF you are studying the form. Maybe you're trying to understand a certain style, and trying to figure out how to incorporate something into your work. I certainly do think drawing it freehand will help you more, or maybe you're just trying to understand certain shapes, but it's not an invalid way of doing some things. You could do an exercise of breaking down the shapes, and it can be a good technique for just understanding things in general. Everyone is different. But learning different styles, and copying them can help you develop and grow IF you're actually studying while you are creating. Also, a lot of people begin by tracing, and it's what pushes them to become artists because they end up realizing that tracing alone won't make you a good artist. I would also like to say one of the most important things you can do while practicing is to study, and learn while you are practicing. It's not enough to just read; you must understand what you are DOING, so that when your references are taken away, you have a building block to create from. You should learn while you practice; that's more important than just a set amount of hours---it's how much you're learning during the process that will equal the result.
Hey Happy idk if you remember me, but can you make another video of you saying some Chinese words that relate to your art? Like I remember you made a piece named in Chinese and I loved it.
I'd say instead of only practice, try to do more masterpieces! Of course practice is important but don't _only_ practice but also _actually create_ art. The more pieces you finish, the better you become! Through each piece you learn more and more, you also learn something you don't get from just practicing and it's _how to finish a piece_ and everything in between. Stay motivated! 💖
You make a good point.
Caravene's Art yeah, just practicing can also bring you into the bad habit of never finishing pieces
Yeah even though it might not be a masterpiece, atleast you’ve finished it and can be proud of yourself for pushing through, it’s motivating for me meanwhile doing a lot of practicing on page is when actually practicing
Here is my art practice schedule for anyone who is interested in having the same one! =)

.
Honestly - this would drive me nuts lol!
Art In Anime That's awesome! :D

i just wanna say you inspire me so much, last night i was just re watching your 30 days of art series while drawing. i ordered prisma colours for the first time two days ago and they arrived yesterday. i just wanna thank you so much. i recently took art for my gcse's (i turned 13 recently btw) and i want to be like you when i grow up. i think when i'm older i will experiment with oil paints since they seem beautiful and the way you build up the gradual colour and shapes. i just want to thank you. so so much. i love you and you are truly a blessing to this world.

Gloria Linsey did you make your profile pic
Kiara Thomas - yep
Hai.. Happy D Artist... I am an on stage painting artist.. I started making art videos from the inspiration of your art channel.. Thank you..
Hmm...social life or art.
Who needs friends anyway?
Wait? What social life? lmao

Learning basic realism gives you the understanding you need to break the rules effectively and create your own stylised piece.
Practicing is great, but maybe try applying what you’ve learnt in your studies to more personal art.

Love your videos. Is it possible for you to make videos covering artist statements/ resume tips
Thank you so much for this advice!! So helpful!
Love your videos! Thanks so much!!!
Actually doing master studies are supposed to be very helpful in learning composition and color theory. Especially if one wishes to learn the techniques of the masters of the past.
I believe she was referring to people who copy the work of their contemporaries as a shortcut.
I think no matter how experienced we are as artists when we go to paint or draw, we should always think of ourselves as practicing because we should never think we're as good as we can get, but should instead be thinking we can always get better.
This seems to be your darkest piece yet. I love it!
Liked before watching, I can tell by the looks of it I will love this. And I'm early!!
I love! Was this done alla prima? 🖤

Omg you are amazing!!!
Thank you this helped me so much❤️🐥🐝🌻
Your videos and artworks are always beautiful
When she said the question that in every platform she got asked how did she get better in art, and she also said there's no word to describe it. I was like obviously there's a word, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Then 20 seconds later she said most of artists would say PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and I was like "GIRL HOWD YOU KNOW"
Thanks Happy, great video and amazing art! How do you paint all those tiny details? I can't figure out how to do that in paints or colored pencils and I want to improve.
do you use water just like acrylic to use oil painting? or you just use oil painting as it is coz i'm new to painting using oil painting.
you're really getting better and better. I love the blue skin tone
Can you make the same video but for intermediate/advanced artists Happy?
Amazing piece
i love your videos and this painting! im gonna buy a print and put it on my wall :D
Thank you earth angel
"learn the fundamentals, learn anatomy, learn perspective, shading, to be good enough to be professional artist"
jean michel basquiat: "HOLD MY BEER!!!!"
Great/best típs sincerely thank you & your work is gorgeous

Love this!!
what did you paint this on a canvas or board?
This is really helpful!!
Completely unrelated comment-
I got onto team touchstone!!! That's the rock climbing team at the gym where I climb. You might have heard of it, Berkeley Ironworks? My family lives in the bay area too. I'm on the intermediate team and their non-climbing workouts are super tough.
Inke Abernathy Umm okay? why did we need to know that?
Gorgeous.
No I didn't see you varnish! But either way thank you a lot for the advice that was all o needed to know ty!🙃
Exactly!!!
DarkSamuraiX1989 I completely agree!
Well then you learn this certain type of art if that's what you want I still think drawing from still life or real life reference is the key
I'm actually surprised she said that. In previous videos she's said she used to copy and no doubt it got to where she is today...
I love your videos!
One thing: I guess your link of free months of skillshare isn't working..
Hey Happy idk if you remember me, but can you make another video of you saying some Chinese words that relate to your art? Like I remember you made a piece named in Chinese and I loved it.
Beautiful illustration! I love your videos
Have you ever thought of making a podcast, I think you have a great voice for it
Thanks for reminding that I need to do the boring stuff to hone my skills... :)
When she says you guys are the best!
ME: NOOOO! YOU'RE THE BESSST!
It's amazing ♥
It would be so helpful to me (and others) if you did a tutorial or a studio session on how to do hands and feet effectively. Who's with me???
really helpful happy d. :) !
