I think the worst habit of an artist (at least from my prespective) is comparing yourself to other artists. I've been comparing myself to other artists and because of that, I haven't been drawing for a while. To this day I still compare myself, but not as much as before. But if I do catch myself doing that, I'd say to myself that's a bad thing to do and instead practice stuff. Don't get me wrong, you can compare yourself to others, but don't turn it into negativity. Turn it instead into motivation to practice more,so that you can become as good as them, or even better.

I have many drawings on my page, but I can really relate to the struggle of being consistent with practicing drawing due to school or just daily life. That is definitely something I've been guilty of, starting and not finishing. But I'm working on that and I'm trying my hardest to balance it out. I realize the more I practice, the better I get. So doing it more often does play a huge part in whether I'll get better or not.
I agree it can be discouraging to compare...

The way you distinguish artists bad habits is sooo true and not many people may agree with it but still those people have a long way to go and in my opinion you cant be a beginner by day and an expert by night, practice always makes perfect and thats what produces great art :3
Not being social is a major setback for me. By "social," I mean engaging outside of the Internet. I think visiting galleries, participating in Drink 'n Draw events, going to Life drawing sessions, and so on would be beneficial. Unfortunately, I have a bit of social anxiety, so going out and doing those things can really take its toll. Right now, it feels necessary because I don't really have a network... Very few people can vouch for me or recommend me to individuals that have the power to say yes. I guess what I'm trying to say is that being social is a good habit... at least to the point where you're not a ghost. Besides that art itself, that's what I'm trying to improve.
All of the advice here is so valid! I have personally been drawn into these habits before and getting out of them was so liberating and truly helped me to grow! On another note; how have you been getting along with incorporating more social interactions into your life and overcoming loneliness? I think a lot of people could also benefit from hearing about your experiences there as well. Of course it's going to take some time to really get out of that state but I'd love to hear an update on that challenge. Thank you for your consistency, diligence, useful information and kind-hearted approach to sharing your art journey! You've found this really nice balance between being very content and information driven while also incorporating fun aspects of life into your videos. You're channel is truly a gem here on UA-cam.

I do share many of these bad habits myself. What helps me many of times to help me produce more art work is being involved with art communities like open studeos or special art classes. They help me have more reason to challenge myself and create better ideas.
Your comment about sometimes winning competitions and sometimes losing them was incredibly helpful! I've always been far too hard on myself (and I still don't think I can flip it off like a switch), but words like those definitely play a part in my attempting to be better about self-criticism.
You are sooo good at painting and drawing. I am working on my skills.

I know this is an older video, but I love this painting. It makes me think of Guild Wars 2, an online game I enjoy. There's a race that's kinda like plant people & that's totally what she reminds me of! Also, I agree with you on this topic. There are some things I definitely need to work on!

I think a good artist don't have bad habits.. Artist's life is always a journey towards that perfection... Artist's goal is to be better and better than yesterday... Still I am confused about the final destination.. haha...

over the course of your art life, you will go through many progressions, where your art style and "goals" will change. I feel like its a constant struggle to "go with the flow" and finding a specific "end goal"... for everyone in life, but especially for us artists. . if you look over any one artists body of work through their whole careern it is a constant progression. its actually art in itself...kind of cool to think about itn because thats the part we have least control of.. idk if im making sense. but... i tried lol.
to the young artist above me, youre lucky at 24-25 to know what youre end goal is meant to be... i hope you have many progressuons in your art career...its a neat thing to experience

There is no purpose, no journey, no final destination. You should always be aiming to improve and try new things, when it comes to painting at least. Just keep going.

Great video...i have a few to add...Get outside and exercise...take a camera and photograph around you, Get your sleep, socialize outside the studio, and last but not...mind your thoughts...they can pull you down faster than bad art technique. Be kind to yourself. Thanks for sharing.
I love your advice, but I more so wanted to mention I'm really interested in the color scheme of this painting! The color red for skin has always been evil in my mind because of the association with demons and devils. I'm still looking at her in curiosity because she seems rather innocent. It's amazing how context can dictate what certain gestures and colors can mean! I guess it's pretty mind-opening!
I found your art about a year and a half ago, and I've been loving it more and more! Some of your paintings in particular have deep meaning in my eyes- even if it wasn't what you intended to depict (dasiphora is a perfect example of this- I see her eyes full of sympathy or empathy towards the viewer). I don't think I've commented on your videos before, but I wanted you to know that ❤
When ever I feel not inspired to do my artwork I always listen to all your talks.

Hey Happy! I love your videos I get so excited to watch them when I get the notification on my phone.
This video was something I really needed to hear! The fear factor is huge for me! I fear failure the most. I have a standard that I am trying to beat down currently and just focus on taking my time and (moving to the fundamentals piece) focus on the fundamentals to build my art skills and improve at my own slow pace. I know that I will pick up getting faster with more understanding and be able to combat the struggle of getting the amazing visual ide as I have in my mind successfully down on canvas or in a sketchbook at the least. I also agree with not letting social media get the best of you and no focus on completion. I feel as though we are all in this together and if we want to succeed individually then we should want us to all succeed as we are all in the same industry so we need to have a healthy and thriving industry to continue making art a successful career as well as a hobby! We all know how great it feels to be able to sell your work.
Do not like the HOBBY WORD,so so many think that all art is just a hobby
kathy heitchue Hobby as in people who are doing it as pleasurable pass time and just enjoy doing it for fun. Definition of Hobby: an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure. Not everyone does art as a career. Children do art as a favorable pass time. My whole family has had a hobby of art all their lives. That is what sparked my interest. Not everyone looks at it as a career path as you and I do. I'm sorry that I wasn't clear about that.
Great tips! I am guilty of some of these as well (especially point number one), but until someone actually points them out, they can be easy for me to ignore and justify - so thank you!! :D I'm always so inspired by your videos!

When i was younger,i used to directly copy someone else’s art and claim it as my own and then after a while i realized that was a very bad habit and stopped doing it

My personal worst art habit is overworking. I'll get sucked into sketching/painting and suddenly it's 5 AM and I haven't eaten all day. It can also cause a ton of burnout! I've pretty much gone fully nocturnal at this point. >.

All too true advice. I recently started taking my art seriously as a career option and the first thing that really hit me was how little art I was actually producing! I had been on Instagram for a little over a year posting nearly every day, but it was all sketches and works in progress.

I usually combine pictures and my imagination when creating artwork and I do get inspired by artists, but idk who any of the really famous artists are currently. I just do my thing. Sometimes I copy a picture that I took and expand upon it based on my imagination or other pictures. Idk if that’s a good thing or a bad thing but that’s how I create my art.
I would love to see some of your fundamentals, do you have art books full of fundamental works?

This is actually really really good advice I currently realized some of the things u are talking about are happening
One way to avoid copying too much from one person is to try learning a lot of the different artistic elements from different artists. Of course, keep your mind open as much as you can, but try finding inspiration for, say, inking techniques from these people over here, lighting/shading from those people over there, composition from some other people down the lane, etc., etc. For me, at least, I’ve found that I can really get a wider range of artistic diversity like this instead of only focusing on a single artist/style/artistic movement.
Another bad artist habit is thinking only of your recent work. Look back. Look at your old stuff, and remember how far you’ve come. Don’t think about how “oh so cringey” it is. It’s true that you might not be in the place you want to be, but it’s also true that you have, in fact, made progress. Never forget that.
Also? Not sketching. When it comes to sketching, a lot of (younger) artists have this thing where they think it’s cheating or it’s a waste of time or they need to bust out some dank something their first time out or whatever. Noooooo. Professionals sketch to refine their ideas as well as get some of the “bad drawings” out of their system. In the end, it actually SAVES time because if all goes well, you already know what you’re doing in the final piece, which doesn’t include erasing constantly. And yes, all of this will help you make a better piece, and better piecES, in the long run. And since sketching makes you draw more, your skill will likely see much faster improvement.
Happy is so right about unhealthy competition. A bit of friendly competition is alright, but when that turns into conflict, it has no place here. This is about being the best you can be, not beating that one person. Be Goku. Don’t be Vegeta.

One of the things I always say (which gets me in trouble) is that everyone (including myself) who says "I don't have time" or any excuse of the same vein, is really just saying a comforting lie they're choosing to believe because they're quitters

I completely agree that my biggest issue as an artist is that I have to practice the fundamentals more. I just don't exactly know who to do that. So what do you suggest you should do for a "practice session".

2.Use different sources for inspiration; have multiple role models
3.Don't use social media to gauge your skill level
4.Practice the basics; once you know the rules, you can break them
5.Have fun; Don't let improvement twist your experience into a competition
As far as these go the only rule I don't break is 3 and 5. Does anyone have some advice on where to start with relearning basics?

I would love to find my style, but I can't draw too much without reference, and when I use reference I think I copy too much and it all makes me frustrated, that I can't make great drawing from my mind, it is hard to imagine good face and draw it proportionally.. Any advices?
Dusky.. I always use a reference. I'll give you an example. I painted a beautiful peacock and had maybe 5 different pictures of Peacocks in front of me. So chose the position on one. The neck on another..The beautiful feathers from all 5.
And of course the background was all me. When the painting was done it did NOT look like any of the 5 . It was beautiful. Think of it as what a fashion magazine would do. Shoes, dress, cape, hat, jewelry, makeup, gloves, tights, boots..etc.
They are all different designers, but look gorgeous together. Good Luck
PS you can have basic outlines for the faces.. Side, front choose different hairstyles.. Long, Short, headband, scarf..all shades of colors. I think you are overthinking it. No one said that you had imagine them! Even Van Gogh painted things he was looking at!

i have a habit telling myself i did nothing even when i paint like a small piece i want to do more but im always distracted.
Sukey just tell yourself it's a marathon not a sprint. Life is distractions also. Unless you are a professional.. I close the door in my studio with no interruptions.

I get everything ready have my papers and and pencil but than all of a sudden I don't know what to draw so I just go online and watch youtube.
How are you going over colors over and over without them getting muddy?

The funny thing is i dont really draw in my spare time i just draw when have a class (i'm in high school)
Some classes are just so boring ( no worries i DO study these classes)
Id say I need to work on drawing the most. The rest Im good to go, especially with the productive part. Im imaginative and motivated to paint all sorts of things. One interesting or ironic thing that keeps me going is that I assume that Im probably screwed in the end so I might as well create a bunch of stuff I enjoy 😁 I think I will do some sort of crazy walrus next! 🐋🌊
OMG NUU I actually recently just have the competitive vibe, BUT I don't talk about it. I just draw and sometimes, the teachers, actually a lot... pick me out as one of the better which makes me feel not really at ease, and sometimes I feel confident, yet again, in shame because I rarely followed any actual art class up until almost two years ago.... and my classmates, well some I assume have seen more art and maybe longer than me because I truly started like again, two years ago.... Is it fair, unfair for me to jump further right now? :/ But then I also fear to suddenly become bad at it or the cheer jealousy we all suddenly have in class xd halp.... I didn't mean to offend anyone :-: I just draw a lot lol

But is it still ok to copy when I really don't have ideas...like if I want to practise something and copy it from a person because I want it to look similar...but still in my own stile..but like only for practice or something😅I hope somebody understands..

If you are just practicing, it's fine to copy something. It can help you understand how its done. It's fine in your sketch book, practice pile, whatever.
The problem with copying something comes in with works you try to sell and claim as your own. Like, if you made a direct copy painting of a drawing you liked, and called it your own original thing, that wouldn't be okay.
