- Latrice Kabamba, an Australian choreographer, dancer and former contestant of Street Dance of China Season 4 faced extreme racism on the Korean show Street Woman Fighter 2 (a rip-off of SDC).
After a dance battle between Latrice and a Korean dancer 'Redlic' (Ha Haeun) threw shade at the Australian.
''To be honest… I felt like this is so unfair… It looked like she didn’t put in the effort… I kept thinking that she won because of her physical build… I bit my tongue and did it because I really wanted it.''

this. latrice's musicality is excellent and she makes everything she does look easy - she knows how to groove. she's dripping w passion and confidence, and her bodily-control is like no other. redlic looked like she was fighting the air and in a constant battle w her body to keep up - her movements were rigid and forced. she (quite frankly) just couldnt handle the choreography and found herself constantly straining to not let it overpower her, as if she were drowning and extenuating all of her energy in an attempt to keep her head above water

They were both good but Latrice just seems so much more relaxed and comfortable in her movements, she's really smooth in motion and confident in how she moves her body.

I don't think it's racist but it's super ignorant. I lived in Korea and currently live in Japan. Ppl think black people are automatically superhuman when it comes to sports, dance or singing. There's a huge respect for it but it also takes away from the hard work ppl do. That's why in anime, tv shows or movies, if they wanna show how good the main character is, they have them go against a black person to be like, if they can beat a black person at this, they're super skilled or strong.

It seems like a lot of people here only have a shallow understanding of what racism really is. Yes, Redlic didn’t say anything about the skin color, but she said something about Latrice’s ethnic physical attribute, which, for Redlic, is the ONLY reason she won that challenge. Although it’s not blatantly racist, it still doesn’t change the fact that Redlic is insinuating that Latrice didn’t win with talent, and that it was all on her attributes as someone of African descent. Latrice wouldn’t cry like that if she didn’t feel offended.
I know racism is still very prominent in Korea, so it isn’t a surprise that someone would think of it that way in that show. I’m sure Redlic didn’t realize it was a racist comment, but hopefully she will learn from this and stop blaming everyone for being better than her 💀

Latrice killed it from the start just by the pose. Her limbs were so locked and fluid it was indescribable. How she manoeuvred her body while keeping her trunk set and then releasing it to mega powerful moves is just fantastic. Boy, you can see the work she's put into this in order for her body to remember and do those moves is spectacular. Latrice dressed and made up herself as well as her beautiful hair to compliment as well as not get in the way and end up a sweaty mess like the other dancer did. I'm an ex dancer, and Latrice outshone her apparent from the start. You go girl. I'm so proud of you ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉

It seems unprofessional for a great dancer like Redlic to use the word "physical" as a way to not accept defeat. Honestly, Latrice's choreo has a lot of groove and flavour. It's definitely not easy (Latrice does it so well that it looks really easy). Yes, some movements may be simple but the overall performance and way of doing every move is NOT simple. In dance, you don't have to hit every beat, you don't have to follow the lyrics of the song, you just need to show what you want to show through the melody of the song - making sure you're in time and finish on the right count. There is no language barrier in dance, and Latrice has said that already. I feel Redlic is too focused on getting the choreo that she missed out on small details that Latrice may have shown which is one of the reasons she lost. But personally I don't think it's embarrassing to lose to such unique choreo and dancing, like that choreo suited Latrice extremely well and she does it the best, so it was really unnecessary of Redlic to make such comments after/during the selection. - Dancer since 3 (does hiphop, ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, ballroom)
Koreans in general are sore losers and refuse to accept defeat gracefully. They will use any means necessary to achieve victory from bribery to violent or racist behavior to downplay the efforts of their opponents.

Latrice is on a whole other level as a dancer. It's especially apparent at 0:25 and 0:33. Not only is she good at isolating her joints and creating smooth and explosive movements, but she knows how to control her energy to match the song. Redlic just looks like she's struggling to be explosive as possible, spending excessively amount of energy and making the dance pair awkwardly with the song.
The way Latrice can't even consider Redlic a rival anymore shows her integrity. A rival is someone who can actively challenge you and push you to better levels. A sore loser has no place as a rival.
This looks like those dialogue that comes up when you pick characters has beef with each other in Street Fighter

What’s really disturbing is the majority of Korean K-POP/Dancers choreographers are trying to act like the SISTA’S. Rhythm and Blues, R & B, Jazz and our street dance didn't come from Korea it all started in America the melting pot!. I think referencing physical strength when talking about a black woman is a delicate situation. Black women are constantly made out to be more masculine, so I can see why it feels racially coded.
It’s complicated because physicality is a term in dance, and talking about someone’s physical abilities is common, and it’s been said about Korean dancers as well.

It felt petty of Redlic to say though and pretty racially coded. Latrice didn't win because of her physical appearance, she won because she was so much more groovy and just had more musicality. She looked like she was having fun, whereas with Redlic I could kinda see how she "grit her teeth" which doesn't really go with the music. Redlic definitely should reflect on what she said. It doesn't make her evil of course, but she definitely needs to get out of that mindset.

chile I was JUST about to give kpop another go but I stumbled upon korean omegle content creators who react to racists and the korean comments made me go NOPE! In one video there were 2 white racists and 1 black racist, guess which race the koreans roasted in the comments.🙃 Mind you the black boy was the least racist (he said ching chong) and was the only one to apologize after the youtuber called him out. Meanwhile the comments with the most likes and replies were calling him a cotton picker, saying he got shot by the police, and that black people have low IQ.
I watched tons of these videos where almost all of the racists were white and the comments NEVER addressed white people in a negative way. At most they would say that foreigners are cruel and would cry asking why Asians are treated this way. I felt so much sympathy for them, that is until I saw the one video with a ignorant black person. All of a sudden them Koreans were with the shits and had ALL the smoke lmao.

The translation is talking about body type. I don't know how that has anything to do with her skin color. I have a strong, athletic, curvy body type very similar to Latrice's. If I were on this show, dancing power moves like that, she could have easily made that exact same comment and it still apply despite me having white skin. To me, this translation, is not a direct comment about her skin color. She's saying Latrice is strong and she is which makes doing power moves easier. Many different races can have Latrice's body type, it's not a direct reflection of her skin tone. Also, you're allowed to think whatever you want, but it's very rude for you to call someone illiterate just because their thinking didn't match yours and for simply posing a question.

I'm not saying that it wasn't meant in a racist way, I'm saying it *could* have been meant in a nonracist way. I dance and I asked a good friend of mine who is a dancer and is also black and she said 'it sounds as though she's mad Latrice's moves are more powerful than hers and instead of just saying that, she's blaming Latrice's stamina and her ability to use her power'.
I think people should just be open to the possibility that she's merely commenting on Latrice's strong body type instead of jumping to the conclusion that she means that she's better because she's black.
I'd also like to point out that what she said is a very common thing heard said by women speaking about transgender women competing in women's sports. I'm just saying this to point out that it's not a strange thing for someone to find certain body types to have an advantage in sports.

Style isn't a physical thing you can inherit. Latrice just had a better style while redlic was too focused on the technicalities of the dance and forgetting the artistry in dance. Its not an exact science.
That’s a lot of hip-hop from Asia that I see online, they are good at the technical aspects of a dance but lack the musicality and the fluidity of movement.
I'm so over this narrative. I'm black and I can't dance to save my *life* . People always try to diminish the *hard work* that black people put into their craft by saying things like "They're black so they get passes. They're black so they're not graded as harshly" rather than just acknowledging black people are talented *TOO* by our own merit and not because of some non existent handouts. Race-swapping a character isn't to purposely swap pivotal and culturally relevant people, because I think we can all agree that people who have made that large of an impact on the world should be depicted accurately when character accuracy is relevant to the media you're watching, as it's the respectful thing to do regardless of race.
Also, the reason why I wouldn't consider Black Panther's race-swapping to be a good thing, is because of the cultural and racial relevancy to the character. The character just wouldn't work if they were white... And, plottwist: I feel the same way about Snow White.
I haven't touched on the Cleopatra argument because I'm not too sure *which* movie you're talking about. I don't watch TV, so I don't bother to keep up with movie releases. But yes, I do agree with that argument. Cleopatra shouldn't be race-swapped.
Plus, as a Lingard (Aka, a viking noble family based in England), I personally only care about a vikings race in a movie depending on how relevant they are to the culture. Key figures in my history shouldn't be race-swapped, but I don't agree that the random background viking that's on screen for five seconds needs to be racially accurate, because the background characters aren't depicting real people, they're just stand-ins to reprisent the idea of Vikings.
Also, my argument is also consistent: Race-swapping is a valid form of reprisentation for as long as cultural relevancy to/and race are not intrinsic to said character or relevant to real life.
So Cleopatra, Nelson Mandela, Black Panther, and Snow White should all be their original race, because race and culture are relevant to the media and real life.
Whereas, Ariel, or random background characters depicting vikings, don't need to be racially accurate, because their race isn't intrinsic to the character.

As a korean, the context of her words were kinda lost in translation and twisted to make her into some kind of racist monster. Her words were definitely not cool and not ok and most of the viewers sympathized with latrice on this point. I’m not defending her for the mean intent behind her words nor is ignorance any excuse for the results in offending someone by saying something that can be interpreted as a racist comment. I hope she learned her lesson to not judge lightly on others’ achievements just to promote their own hard work. If i remember correctly, latrice won this round fair and square, JUST by her dancing.
