Hey guys. I'm sorry about my NOT mentioning of Dieter Doepfer. Of course Doepfer is a huge, vital player in the invention and evolution of Eurorack. I was just referring to Buchla Vs. Moog's interpretation of early modular synthesizers. My focus for that part of the video wasn't on the history of modular synthesis, but just how a Buchla differs from the more common subtraction groundwork originally laid out by Bob Moog. Dieter, if you're reading this, I'm sorry and I hope you've spent all my money over the years on something really cool, like a Jet Ski or one of those robotic mattresses that adjusts to the contour of your body.
"Bob Moog invented what we now know as Eurorack." Just an instance of the bizarre trend of equating "modular" with Eurorack. 32:39 Look! It's a giant Eurorack!
Was the arp 2600 used by queen making the Flash Gordan soundtrack I wonder? Because when you played that filter it sounded exactly like one of the coolest parts of that soundtrack, when Ming the Merciless walked in and set everybody straight.. including his own daughter. If you heard that filter.....that meant your ass.
Hey Benn, you probably won't read this, given that it's an old video, but I just want to let you know that this video, along with your VCV video, effectively changed my life by getting me interested in synthesis and sound design. Four years later and it's one of my main passions in life. Thank you for opening my eyes to this fascinating world
What a poor beggar! Man, I own one for every phalanx (finger and toes) and I use rare dynosaur blood to keep them in tune during odd days, and unicorn blood during even days, like a boss! :))))
Oh man, this is great. Most gear reviews make me want to go out and buy gear, but your stuff is so musical that I just want to run home and make music. Outstanding presentation, and tons of fun! Extra points for that Bladerunner homage, and especially the Pat Metheny clip. Brilliant. Thanks man.
Lovin your video and especiallly your irreverent and tongue in cheek delivery at times while still imparting genuine knowledge about the v6 collection ( enjoying this while I isolate with covid) Continue the good work. Regards from Ireland Bill
That. Was. The. Best. Review. Ever. I laughed, I cried but mostly laughed. So well done and I never did that one period a word sentence. Awesome content!
The thing i absolutely love about this collection is that you can actually see what you're hearing. I don't want to get a doctorate degree on virtual instruments to learn how to use them. This helps immeasurably both with inspiration and workflow.
Between the CS-80, Fairlight CMI, Jupiter 8, this collection saves *at least* $30k if you're even able to find any of them on the used market (and just forget about looking for a Synclavier unless you hit the lottery,) and they all are highly detailed and sound incredibly convincing! Those three alone make Arturia's softsynth collection worth it, and everything else is a very nice bonus. Plus, the Fairlight is sort of my personal "holy synth" (well, technically a sampler) because I'm a Mark Mothersbaugh fan, and Terminator 2 is one of my top 3 favorite movies (technically T2 was CMIII and Emulator II, but the CMIIx is the closest thing and significant in its own right.)
I just finally picked this up this week on sale and it's brilliant. The cost to worth ratio is insane. Even if they never do an update ever again, I'll gladly be deep into these synths for decades still to come. Great demo and great use of humor sprinkled in. DX7 part is hiliarious. haha. Subscribing now. Keep it up.
Already own v-6, but this video showed me so much that I’ve not even looked at! Thanks, I always upgrade my arturia in the Black Friday discount period every year, it’s worth it
This is like the 5th video of yours that I watch. And man am I fucking hooked. Your videos are amazing. Informative, entertaining, funny, creative, and they make me want to make more music and art. So good job sir.
The person at Arturia who thought that the interface MUST look like the original and not be scaleable needs a few years in an uranium mine reeducation facility somewhere beyond the arctic circle.
Arturia's "Collection" has grown a lot in the last few years, and it's worth noting that you get about $200 off the full "Collection" if you've purchased a Keylab controller. Analog Lab comes with the controller. It has many of the sounds, but you can't edit them. I just recently bought the whole Collection so that I could have full editing of the sounds. It is amazing.
I just wanted to thank you for helping me get over asinine prejudices that I somehow acquired in life. I cant stand vapors... don't know why. Nothing happened in my life to cause this unjustified opinion. But until this video, I automatically disliked anyone I saw vaping. Such was the case when I saw you doing so in the beginning o the vid... I almost moved on to another video. SOOOOOO glad I kept an open mind and pushed down my narrow-minded preconceptions. Awesome video! Extremely well made, well edited and highly entertaining :)
Same here! XD But I watched it through, gave it a like at the end and subbed. Awesome channel! I think my prejudice comes from seeing too many vaping douchebags, who think the vape clouds combined with fake slang and gangsta attitudes can somehow compensate for their lack of self awareness and cover their insecurities.
Just bought this for $200 on sale! I haven't tried it yet but I think I'm gonna enjoy it. If it's good enough for frank ocean and mike dean, it's good enough for me.
You did a great job with this video. It had to be incredibly difficult what to leave in and what to leave out. You made great decisions, and your explanations are great.
Thank you for this video. For all I know you could make them 1 hr and I would still watch them. I think this video in particular is important to me. I've purchased the V Collection about 2 years ago but I have other software I work with and haven't been spending time with it . This video definitely help me get to know what I have and it keeps me trying to find sound possibilities by exploring what you're doing with them.
I just wanted to say that I dont know jack shit about synths in general, I can make serum go brrrrr. Synths are not the reason I'm watching this video, you are, everything you're doing is like all I ever wanted to do. I'm so happy for you.
Great parody Benn. - could feel the Blade Runner love. RIP Vangelis. Lovely demo. Didn't consider that Arturia's collection had anything worth taking a look at. Your CS-80 demo was moving.
Hi Benn, just sort of stumbled across this. I have never used soft synths, being a bit of a hardware guy and doing as much as possible "out of the box"....with boxes.... I just wanted to say that I found you style of presentation so amusing and engaging that you had me hooked. I watched the whole thing fro beginning to end. As a result I now want to investigate the possibilities of soft synths. I guess for those of us on limited budgets they are a bit of a "no-brainer". And you have a new subscriber. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
I have the V Collection 6. What I find striking about this edition of the package is that the DX-7 was in some ways equal to or superior to the Synclavier even though the Synclavier cost 10-100 times as much. (To be fair, the more expensive packages for the Synclavier included sampling, recording to disc, sequencing etc. It is also striking how bad the raw Fairlight samples sound. That people were able to make listenable hit records out of these sounds shows the craftsmanship and artistry of the people making those records.
I usually never comment on videos, but I just had to say that you were genuinely funny when commenting on those 80's videos. You should keep mixing your humor into your reviews, it is very entertaining.
I disagree with the statement that the CMI was like a novelty item. I recently used it to make a low fi sounding hip hop track not to long ago. Some of these sounds are quite unique and some can be usable today.
I know it’s an old video now but I have so much love for this collection. I still use the Moog Model D on almost everything. The other day I finally sat down with a synclavier and a tutorial a couple of months ago. It blew my mind.
Going back and watching these as I prepare to buy the new release. It’s difficult for me to find reviewers I can get much out of, for various reasons. But I find yours to be funny, informative and without any of the annoyances so many other reviewers have. That CS-80 bit, wow. If you haven’t already, you could do an entire video on just that. Amazing. Anyways, thanks for all you do and keep up the great work. 👍
Whilst I don't think I ever want to experience virtual Benn ever again, this is easily my favourite look at the Arturia Collection. The Blade Runner spoof was sublime, alone with the other weird historical clips, but best of all was just letting the synths do the talking, with occasional interjections of additional information.
While I personally love their emulations and think they sound great (for the most part), I think I know where you're coming from; there's just that certain sound quality of a vintage hardware synthesizer that simply cannot be fully replicated through software.
All those sliders look intimidating and complex, for someone that normally just uses acoustic piano VSTs! Looks fun if you can master them though, so many possibilities!
On no, I knew I shouldn't have watched this... I must at least wait until it's on sale. I will never have any money!! Great video btw - loved the Blade Runner bit :)
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned...the current Arturia Synclavier V (v. 2.4) includes working with samples. I am completely blown away and overwhelmed. Noob to synths of any kind. Please do a more in depth look at this instrument. Thank you!
It's amazing just how powerful the Fairlight was at the time. Frankie goes to Hollywood , Art of noise , Oh yeah by Yello. I heard this stuff before I was 10 and it all just sound so different to every thing else. My Mum and Dad didn't have any music that sounded like that. Nor did my sister.
My favorite part is when you laugh because you sal balls. Came here to check it out because for Christmas, the Keylab MK2 controller just came out and it comes with this fully functional (usually you have to pay $399 to fully unlock it) so I finally bought it. I really wanted the 7 and the Synclavier and of course the lab but you got me excited about a damn organ and I HATE organs. You made us sound exactly like the Rhodes from The Doors “Light My Fire” solo. I figured it was a Rhodes, was right? Subbed man! You are the best. I enjoyed the video on its face. I would watch this even if I didn’t care about keys and VSTs. I used to only like hardware but the “pretentious” joke really hit home. I realized I was using my gear as a trophy instead of an instrument. I use VSTs now for synths I own sometimes. The 808 was my only gripe. As a child of hip hop and DnB, the 808 is not just an instrument, it’s almost a genre unto itself and the clones was because nobody got it right. Watch the documentary on Prime called “808” to learn why. Recently though Berr came out with the RD-8 for a true fully analog version of it that sounds better than any of Rolands. Not for nothing, but their patent ran out in October but check out the RD-8 but on the other hand, I still love it and loved your video. As a VFX artist, professionally, wanted to give you props not just on your little 3D poser bids but on all the hard work you did to make this video, broadcast good in production, a higher standard than a normal VLOG. This was recorded as well as any broadcast quality video. Truly funny, you are (Yoda?) and I just love how you put on a show without trying. I’m watching. Keep it up. Adam

My only real complaint about Arturia VST's is how convoluted the whole process is between buying it and actually playing it.
The first two minutes of synth wisdom!!!
The synclavier has a sampling option in the newer version now!
