I’m currently playing this game for the first time ever with the same characters you chose. (Chrono, Marle, & frog) and I’m just fought Nizbel. The last two bosses have been rough fights where I basically out lasted the opponent purely because I had stacks upon stacks of health. It’s been tough but I’m dedicated to the characters.
Solid list! I think Chrono Trigger does a pretty good job of giving all characters a chance to shine at one point or another, but if pressed I'd rank the characters exactly like this.
For me it was always Crono, Ayla, and Magus. Crono, because he's your best all-rounder. Ayla, because she hits first and hard and asks questions later assuming she ever asks. Plus her various attack animations are hilarious. Watching Ayla suplex a dinosaur is always a treat. Magus, because if he lifts a finger or twitches an eyebrow all the things die or wish they were dead. His spellcasting is superb and when you kick this much a$$ you don't worry about double or triple techs. The only problem I have with him is his modest physical attack power and the sheer lack of single-target spells. For him it's all or nothing. Mass genocide is his game.
In ds, steam and ios version, there is a better weapon for him, it does 4x damage when critical, you can combine with the dragon tear (boost critical rate). I ve never max out my team (except once for Spekkio last form), Magus is a life saver for low level run, because he s on level 37, and has a great magic résistance with his shadowplume robe!
Yup, that's usually how my party goes, Crono, Robo & Ayla, maybe Lucca from time to time, I feel bad for Marle & Frog though. Magus is pretty nice too, shame he doesn't have any Doubles or Triples with anyone.
Lmao, Robo was least used member. Ayla is #1 After many double digit playthroughs, healing was always a pain with the Ultimate Spekkio at the end of time. It wasn't until I found that Frog and Ayla could heal the entire party for 1mp, or 2mp, each with slurp kiss (999 heal). Then whomever else was on the team could do magic damage to Spekkio. Once you max out Ayla's strength and get Bronze Fist, her critical attacks would do 9999 dmg. I remember giving her frenzy band and fighting black tyrannosaurus during a playthrough. He did his countdown roar and she countered with 9999, he died. Mind you this was during the part where he was resilient vs attacks. She just bulldozed that, destroying him. Ayla was a critical character if you've played that much, imho. She completely ignores defense with Bronze Fist, unless it is a magic only enemy, even them some still take 9999, otherwise it'll be a Miss. Even the Lavos Spawn shells can be crit'd by Ayla for 9999, instantly killing them or glitching it. I can't remember but do remember trying it once. Some funny shit happens when you get Bronze Fist using Ayla.
I’m about halfway through, just did the magus fight and I’ve always kept Marle on my team cuz she’s one of my favorites. But this video did reinforce a lot of issues I’ve had with her so far. At this point I’ll prolly swap her for Robo or Lucca as much as it pains me to do so
It's true but no double techs, also doesn't have all that great of synergy with other characters due to this. This is why I didn't find him to be all that great on a team.
Imo 7Th: Frog (sorry but his only good attack rely on having him with 1 HP) 6Th: Marle (Haste is the reason she's above frog) 5Th: Crono 4Th: Lucca (Crono Is slightly more versatile but she is more efficient) (spamming flare > anything crono can do as a solo unit) 3d: Magus (Elemental versatility and some minor support with his Magic Wall) And to me the first place is tied with Ayla and Robo. Ayla and charm make her unskipabble for certain bosses or the black omen, besides she is the fastest and strongest character and the only one who can cure aliment status as a solo unit. And Robo for his versatility, AOE Heals, multi elemental skills, and his Uzzi Punch might be there strongest solo unit ST skill there is. Great video!! You are so underrated ! Let's go for the 10K subs :D
Uzzi Punch I remember being weaker than Crono's Confuse, less damage. Confuse would do 4 hits of 461dmg. Uzzi punch was around 1350. Uzzi Punch was slightly less MP to use though. End game, everyone lvl 99, I used Crono, Frog, Ayla. I could swap out Frog for Robo after watching another video where endgame Robo's heal skill yields 999. Pretty crazy! Frog and Ayla's double tech Slurp Kiss, also did that for 2 MP each.
I love Lucca and Marle. Those two and chrono are my optimal team. I’ve never been able to really get on the Robo train. I just love Marle’s double and triple tech’s.
Cool video. I played Chrono Trigger for the first time ever this year. I went with Chrono, Lucca, and Ayla and it was a bloodbath. I did not lose a single battle with the exception of trying to early fight the final boss. That party is pure offense and really fun. Gonna do a second playthru at some point with Robo and Ayla.
Triple techs all kind of suck anyway. What he’s missing out on are double techs, but not that he needs them with Dark Matter, though it doesn’t deal as much damage as Luminere.
@@InfinityZeroEX the only really good triple tech is Final Kick, it has the highest single attacl damage in the game and makes the lavos boss fight a cake walk even on a first run if you gold stud Ayla
Marle: Very bad single techs but dual techs are some of the best in the game, like antipode bomb and dual cure. Also the only character who gets arise, very useful as Crono's raise makes it so you have to immediately heal that party member late game Frog: Terrible if you use him as a mage or healer (with the exception of double cure and slurp kiss), but a very good physical attacker, Ayla is still better than him at that, but their dual techs together are quite good, like the aforementioned slurp kiss, as well as dropdown Magus: Best character when you first get him, but his lack of dual and triple techs ruin his viability quite quickly (plays nothing like Crono, have no clue what you were on about there) Lucca: Yes she has little to no support techs, because she's NOT A SUPPORT CHARACTER. Her fire skills and hypnowave can just obliterate certain bosses. Ayla: Best physical attacker in the game, Good dual techs with Crono and Frog. A pick, not much else to say, really Crono: Decent single techs, and decent dual techs with everyone. His techs are just decent damage dealers with the exception of raise, but if you're not in wait mode that party member is going to be immidiately killed again, unless you're incredibly fast at healing them Robo: Good physical attacker, has the potential to be the best healer in the game if you give them all of your magic tabs, but the healing other characters' give you will be good enough, and you'll never really need it. In Chrono Trigger, looking at any character in isolation will always make them seem to be much better or worse than they actually are when used with others.
@@crosswalkX He's still incredibly lacking for double and triple techs, even if he has two triple techs with an accessory (which uses an equipment slot) so what I said still stands, especially with my main overall point about how looking at characters in isolation make them seem better or worse than they actually are
Up until the DS remake, the unequivocal best party was Chrono, Robo and Frog. They were the only combination that could use both the nova armour- which prevented status effects- and the haste helm- which gave automatic haste, obviously. Any of the female characters unfortunately had to choose between status protection with the Prism Helm, OR haste from the haste helm. On top of that, robo and frog both have mid-level full party heals, on top of a full party full heal double tech. And don’t even get me started on triple raid/delta attack! Until you can get gold studs for the whole party, its damage output compared to MP is incomparable. With the remakes and updates I’m honestly not as sure what would have officially changed, but it’s always so fun to blow through things on new game plus
Screw it. Nadia (that's her real name) gives haste, and together with Chrono and Ayla they have a really nice variety of options to heal, combine physical with magical, and purely physical attacks. Falcon hit proved itself to be a banger when fighting lavos, and That triple kick with Nadia Chrono and Ayla is just awesome. Edit: it's called final kick, and uses magic from crono, Nádia and physical attack from ayla
I always ran marle, chrono and ayla for Aura whirl, falcon hit, aylas huge crits with the retaliate item, marles life 2 (ressurect on full HP), haste, double charm, and marles crossbow targeting that tells you enemy hp which helps planning attacks/damage.
Lol I used frog, marle, and crono first. Not bad but then... crono, robo, ayla. You can literally beat the sh** out of any enemy before they can make you feel like you need healing.
i always have lucca in my party, except to have someone learn their techs. so lucca, robo and chrono most of the time. except when there is something good to charm like tabs or rainbow helms
Funny how a big chunk of the Triple techs in this game are not even remotely more powerful or useful than most Double or even some Single techs! Yes, I am looking at you Poyozo Dance! Ugh! I love the ones that involve Magus. Dark Eternal and Omega Flare are too cool to bypass! Another amazing video bro!!
I think Frog is deceptively useful, largely carried by having excellent dual and triple techs. X-strike is good reliable damage in his first appearance. Ice Water is an excellent room clearing option in Magus' Castle. Triple Raid sucks late game, but it's likely the only Triple tech available for the Magus fight. Arc Impulse and 3D Attack are the two hardest hitting normal triple techs, and Spin Strike is the most powerful one using one of the rocks, and Frog is required for all of them. Slurp Kiss is the most efficient full party heal in the game. Frog is a perfect example of why the party composition is greater than the sum of its parts.
truth be told i avoided using robo when first playing this game this is do to his low magic def stat and me just not liking him not haveing any real magic made me just not use him in fact my go to team was lucca and marle.
yeah I think this game is pretty well balanced, he put Marle n shit tier but she's still great and totally usable. I remember the first time I beat the game I replayed the final boss with the remaining party members, though I gotta admit I've always been a very patient player for level grinding so I probably was overleveled for Lavos. But still Marle is great
Frog is one of the best all around characters tho. He got good attack power, healing, water techs, double techs, and triple techs. Pretty good in all areas
Frog and robo can aoe heal pretty good along with good DPS and magus not that good but can make the strongest triple tech with robo and lucca, "omega flare" or "omega beam"
All depends on your strat. You can haste and utilize the hunting range twice as fast, and hit up Medina for the OP items, or jack everyone with charm. Frog is a good complimentary even though when you look at him as an individual he is 2nd or 3rd to last. How do want to fight? Do you care about speed running? Do you care about item collection rate? When you ask yourself all this the tier list changes under each parameter.
My team Chrono (with that item that max physical) Magus (with that item that max both physic and magic) Robo (with max speed for support, when he is fully healed... well, you know ^^
Magus has the best triple tech with Lucca and Robo: Omega Flare. So I'd swap Crono out for him. I'd also put Frog below Marle since Frog has too much overlap with other characters. Single healing is not that great for Marle but haste is useful until you get 3 haste helms.
Crono, Frog, and Magus was my first party, but Crono, Robo, and Ayla is probably the best, with Ayla able to do some massive damage, even better than Crono debatably and Robo for healing and decent damage output, even if he is a bit slow, but that's why speed tabs exist.
Didn't complete this game when it was new, so been doing a full playthrough at the moment. I was definitely cracking skulls in Magus's castle using Robo as the optional slot. Poor Slash got triple teched into mush. My only gripe thus far is the game could use a hard mode.
After beating the game I can gladly confirm, yes, Marle sucks. No matter how many times I've read how IceWater is OP in Magus' castle and how I should use the Frog/Marle duo for that I sort of refused to use Marle since getting Robo, except for her endgame mission but that's it. Chrono/Robo/Ayla and Chrono/Lucca/Frog were the main two setups I interchanged, while for the last portion of the game I went Lucca/Magus/Robo, and I tell you I never missed Marle ever, I was sad she got technically stuck at the end of time waiting for her love to finally recruit her into the team, but from a gameplay viewpoint I have no remorse
Hey! Would you create a ranking for Final Fantasy V or XII: ZE jobs? I'd be really interested in hearing your ranking, especially how I usually felt FFV's jobs to be kinda overwhelming with the amount.
I don't think Frog is that bad... and he is the best character story wise. Lucca I overlooked before and after trying her as a main party member she is a beast, really fun to use
I think you should consider the end game, where you can max stats and the regular story play through seperately. Robo may have the best tec pool and the best physical bulk, but he had the lowest magic, magic defense and speed at the start of the game which gave me trouble at some times.
I always end up with a team of Magus, Lucca, and Robo by the end. moot points but: a) i think magus is the best solo character thanks to the doomsickle b) he does have access to two triple techs, though it is a drag that you have to waste an item slot on one of your party members to use it tbh though i think the roster is fairly well-balanced, so i guess at the end of the day the best characters are really just whoever you dump your tabs into ;p
Magus gets a couple triple techs, the Robo Lucca Magus one is one of my faves. Frog is below bottom tier for new game plus, the upgraded Masamune gets lost since it is a story item and his 2nd best weapon is way way worse in the original, and still pretty bad with the extra DS weapon from Lost Sanctum :(
How Crono isn't god-tier on this list, I don't get. I've used Crono to solo Lavos and won. Also, when Ayla tops out her levels her crits do 9999 damage flat.
Frog is such an important, honorable and well-written character, I just have to have him the whole game no matter if he's worse haha. His storyline made me emotional

After many double digit playthroughs, healing was always a pain with the Ultimate Spekkio at the end of time.
Love this game, so pure, it's music themes always take me to a good place❤
Uh?, Magus can't do triple techs?..., his triple tech does the highest damage in the game...
lol, yep
You mean Omega Flare, so you have to give up an accessory slot?
Actually Dark Eternal, but accesories are not a big difference in this game as weapons and armors...
Pretty sure Omega Flare is indeed better than Dark Eternal, but also - no accessory, no Golden Stud
@@joncliffmckinley5868 Never used it...
I’m about halfway through, just did the magus fight and I’ve always kept Marle on my team cuz she’s one of my favorites. But this video did reinforce a lot of issues I’ve had with her so far. At this point I’ll prolly swap her for Robo or Lucca as much as it pains me to do so
Waxing Croissant for story purposes I’d highly recommend her!
This video could've definitely used a "best double tech, best triple tech party comp".
Robo is a force to be reckoned with.
And he has the rick asley theme song!
2:55
That music just hit me right in the nostalgia, so hard. Took me back 20 years. Wow.
Robo is so cool, so happy he was mentioned in Chrono Cross.
Too bad about what happened to him
you did my boy Magus dirty :(
2:46. Dont know if I'm the first person to spot this but I am pretty sure magus can do triple techs with rocks tou can find.
I misspelled you for anyone who sees this comment in the future.
It's true but no double techs, also doesn't have all that great of synergy with other characters due to this. This is why I didn't find him to be all that great on a team.
@@ReticentIndignation he seems to be more of a extra than anything. Kind like gogo or umaro in ff6. Nice to get but ..
Great game! Great story! Great music!
Imo
7Th: Frog (sorry but his only good attack rely on having him with 1 HP)
6Th: Marle (Haste is the reason she's above frog)
5Th: Crono
4Th: Lucca (Crono Is slightly more versatile but she is more efficient) (spamming flare > anything crono can do as a solo unit)
3d: Magus (Elemental versatility and some minor support with his Magic Wall)
And to me the first place is tied with Ayla and Robo.
Lucca is a fun character to experience the story with for sure. Robo and Ayla just yell jibberish half the time.
@@locloudanerpg Totally agree. I loved Ayla's playability but her character was just lame. I felt the same about Robo so I kept him out.
Magus has triple techs, you just need to collect special items to equip on specific party members to use them
that sounds like a pain. Are they at all worth it?
@@KnightRaymund damage wise, yeah I think so, the party comp for them aren't the greatest though.
Also the only character who gets arise, very useful as Crono's raise makes it so you have to immediately heal that party member late game
Frog: Terrible if you use him as a mage or healer (with the exception of double cure and slurp kiss), but a very good physical attacker, Ayla is still better than him at that, but their dual techs together are quite good, like the aforementioned slurp kiss, as well as dropdown
Magus: Best character when you first get him, but his lack of dual and triple techs ruin his viability quite quickly (plays nothing like Crono, have no clue what you were on about there)
Lucca: Yes she has little to no support techs, because she's NOT A SUPPORT CHARACTER. Her fire skills and hypnowave can just obliterate certain bosses.
Ayla: Best physical attacker in the game, Good dual techs with Crono and Frog. A pick, not much else to say, really
Crono: Decent single techs, and decent dual techs with everyone. His techs are just decent damage dealers with the exception of raise, but if you're not in wait mode that party member is going to be immidiately killed again, unless you're incredibly fast at healing them
Robo: Good physical attacker, has the potential to be the best healer in the game if you give them all of your magic tabs, but the healing other characters' give you will be good enough, and you'll never really need it.
In Chrono Trigger, looking at any character in isolation will always make them seem to be much better or worse than they actually are when used with others.
@@crosswalkX He's still incredibly lacking for double and triple techs, even if he has two triple techs with an accessory (which uses an equipment slot) so what I said still stands, especially with my main overall point about how looking at characters in isolation make them seem better or worse than they actually are
Exactly why I didn't care much for Magus. Crono, Ayla, and Frog endgame were all I needed.
Chrono Trigger is and will always be my favorite JRPG of all time.
I would've docked Robo a tier just for that Rick Astley-esque theme.
Wow. I haven't heard that victory theme for so Long
Crono is an absolute MONSTER when you give him magic tabs. I'm not kidding, he should be God tier
Bruh my team for the whole game was chrono, marle, and frog.
1:02 my favorite part LOL
Funny how a big chunk of the Triple techs in this game are not even remotely more powerful or useful than most Double or even some Single techs! Yes, I am looking at you Poyozo Dance! Ugh! I love the ones that involve Magus. Dark Eternal and Omega Flare are too cool to bypass! Another amazing video bro!!
Me and my friend used to put our names in the characters, and he was always crono and I Robo 😁
But still Marle is great
Robo best boy in both behavior and gameplay, truly the best of boys
Frog is one of the best all around characters tho. He got good attack power, healing, water techs, double techs, and triple techs. Pretty good in all areas
Equipment helps Marle. She can get auto haste, auto protect and auto shell. Then, so can any other woman.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES I've been waiting for this!!!
Frog and robo can aoe heal pretty good along with good DPS and magus not that good but can make the strongest triple tech with robo and lucca, "omega flare" or "omega beam"
Crono, Frog, and Marle are my go to group.
Doing a no robo playthrough. He really is too good 👍🏻
Frog's magic is complete 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩
All depends on your strat. You can haste and utilize the hunting range twice as fast, and hit up Medina for the OP items, or jack everyone with charm. Frog is a good complimentary even though when you look at him as an individual he is 2nd or 3rd to last. How do want to fight? Do you care about speed running? Do you care about item collection rate? When you ask yourself all this the tier list changes under each parameter.
Great video!
@@empty_melodies Thanks!
Excelent video. Just what i just wanted
My team
Chrono (with that item that max physical)
Magus (with that item that max both physic and magic)
Robo (with max speed for support, when he is fully healed... well, you know ^^
Magus doesn't need dual techs. His magic rating is nuts
Ahead of it's time, huh.. Well, the Day of Lavos kinda shifted to 2020, so..
My top team is Chrono / Ayla / Marle. I love the high melee DPS and Marle's Haste and Life 2.
Magus has the best triple tech with Lucca and Robo: Omega Flare. So I'd swap Crono out for him. I'd also put Frog below Marle since Frog has too much overlap with other characters. Single healing is not that great for Marle but haste is useful until you get 3 haste helms.
I would move lucca to top tier. And I agree best party combinations are crono, robo, lucca/ayla
You should do a tier list of valkyrie profile!
And VP2!
Best party Chrono, Ayla, Lucca with their best equipment.
Robo, Lucca and Ayla for me
Crono, Frog, and Magus was my first party, but Crono, Robo, and Ayla is probably the best, with Ayla able to do some massive damage, even better than Crono debatably and Robo for healing and decent damage output, even if he is a bit slow, but that's why speed tabs exist.
Didn't complete this game when it was new, so been doing a full playthrough at the moment. I was definitely cracking skulls in Magus's castle using Robo as the optional slot. Poor Slash got triple teched into mush.
My only gripe thus far is the game could use a hard mode.
every play through i tell myself im gonna run a diff party but i always end up on frog, ayla, and chrono
Magus should be higher Dark Matter spam makes everything easy
This list is total correct. ;)
agreed
Magus ayla chrono endgame in advance version with megalixers ive found to be god tier in any battle
Chrono is the best and better then robo for 2 reasons
1. Magic
2. Speed
*4 reasons
3. Power
4. Rainbow Sword
Hey! Would you create a ranking for Final Fantasy V or XII: ZE jobs? I'd be really interested in hearing your ranking, especially how I usually felt FFV's jobs to be kinda overwhelming with the amount.
FFV Jobs are in the works and XII Jobs are further down the pipe!
Chrono Ayla Glenn
magus is god tier
Final boss party: Ayla, Frog, and Robo. Just worked- could heal on every turn.
Edit: I accidentally typed Marle instead of Ayla.
I've always wanted The Epoch
I always end up with a team of Magus, Lucca, and Robo by the end.
moot points but: a) i think magus is the best solo character thanks to the doomsickle b) he does have access to two triple techs, though it is a drag that you have to waste an item slot on one of your party members to use it
tbh though i think the roster is fairly well-balanced, so i guess at the end of the day the best characters are really just whoever you dump your tabs into ;p
I’d say it doesn’t matter. All,chrono, frog and robo are ruthless with the counter hit. Frog with the masamune and medal is ruthless
Frog is amazing
God tier: Chrono
Top tier: Robo, Magus
Mid Tier: Frog, Ayla
Low tier: Luca
S**t tier: Marle
Came here to check if 10 year old me was playing this game correctly. I was not disappointed.
Haha glad to hear it.
Marle+Lucca's double tech Antipode3 is very OP!
Marle and Lucca are two useless shits
I wish they remake this or at least remaster it for current platforms.
Just beat the game for the first time. Robo carried me super hard lol
For me
S Tier: Crono and Ayla
A: Robo, Lucca, and Frog
B: Magus
Shitty as Fuck Tier: Marle
Magus gets a couple triple techs, the Robo Lucca Magus one is one of my faves.
Frog is below bottom tier for new game plus, the upgraded Masamune gets lost since it is a story item and his 2nd best weapon is way way worse in the original, and still pretty bad with the extra DS weapon from Lost Sanctum :(
should i replace someone with magus or just keep my party as robo, ayla, and lucca?
you do you. I think that you should use your favorite characters.
How Crono isn't god-tier on this list, I don't get. I've used Crono to solo Lavos and won. Also, when Ayla tops out her levels her crits do 9999 damage flat.
Frog,crono,Ayla change my mind
