i know that Will probably won't read this but... i just bought this same set for £80 on Ebay, I saw this video for the first time about 12 years ago and thought "i want one of those sets" After years of waiting for a good price & condition as well as collecting many other old sets i finaly managed to get a hold of one, Thanks Will for inspiring my love of trains and model railways
Dude I am your biggest fan so I brought the same set and I went up into the roof and got my old engines down also my dad gave me his old hornby 00 gauge princess Victoria but it hadn't been used for such a long that the motor had burned out lol he also gave me his "MY first hornby set" so yeah thanks really inspiring video :)
Thank god for this train set otherwise none of these fantastic reviews and videos would never exist, thanks will for all your great videos love this channel
From what I'm told the motors in previous Hornby starter sets, say pre 2007 ish are scalektrix motors. But now they have upgraded them to a nice smooth running motor which with a little running in and oilling can proove a nice little shunter.
@ReyoNeutra - thanks for the comment! All the locos and sets and rolling stock I have comes from all over the country really. Some of it comes from local model shops like Trident Trains in Nantwich, Haslington Models in Haslington and the rest comes from online places like Argos, Amazon, and of course, Hattons.
@Galacticmaster - it might depend on the loco and rolling stock. I have a Bachmann class 40 and rake of Bachmann MK1 coaches that all use the small, NEM coupling and there's no problem on bends as tight as 2nd radius. But they are couplings that 'extend' on curves - so that might be why they're ok.
I'm waiting on my very first train set, The Duke of Gloucester with Pullman coaches. You should get some weathering powder and weather the wagons etc. Makes them look more realistic.
Hello Will, I've had my Australian friend staying with me for the last 2 months so trying to do some catching-up now. Great vid & review as always I wouldn't have expected less! Best as always, John.
My first ever train, the flying Scotsman set, I got almost 8 years ago. It broke when I left my railway when I was 9. 5 years later today I got back Itnto t buying train matching 2000+, the Scotsman still hasn't been fixed yet xD
@Calum643 - brake vans were used decades ago, to help slow down and stop long freight trains as the wagons themselves often had no brakes. But now they're not really needed anymore.
@loeb1 - thanks for the comment! Well this little set is only basic but it got be hooked again, and so essentially was the most expensive set I ever bought! lol I may have paid £70 in the shop but I've now spent well over £6,000 on trains alone lol
@Calum643 - Well, the name Falcon is literally the name of a Loco. Who operated that loco changed over the course of its life. So when it was brand new it was operated by LNER and was blue. But then everything went British Rail and many were repainted green - but the name stayed the same. It happened with the LMS too, they had many maroon and black locos, which often changed to green or blue after the change over. But then some, did stay the same you see. Can get confusing, :)
Hi, I got the hornby railroad range class 06 and I have discovered that you should never judge an engine's running until you test it with a backmann analogue controller and not a hornby one because it tends to run a lot better on a bachmann controller. Also there is a lot of space in there for extra weight if you want to add it.
@tml136 - I'll be setting up the Night Mail set as it comes out of the box, not sure if I will go back and do this one tho - as I might asked to do ALL if them then. lol
@RailwayFalcon - very good point! And in the upcming video on the class 08 from Bachmann, I do mention the gearing. As for the Bachmann controllers, I can't comment as I haven't used one.
@randomkid21000 - I don't have a class 66 from Hornby. But a review of the City Industrial set has been made. As for running it, I shall get a video done asap.
Really loving the vids cant wait for some more I'm getting back into model railroading I'm getting a starter set, It will probably send me spiraling into your situation.Up to your eyeballs in trains=)
I got the coca cola christmas train set last year for my birthday , and like you that set really got me interested in collecting and expanding , its now an obsession LOL
I needed to know why they couldn’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for most of the mainline Trains so that they could extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock which will include the class 507, class 508, class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign all of them into an overhead wire line trains and also make most of them into Five carriages per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Gardner 6LXC, Cummins M11, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner LG1200 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 8-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 10-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 507, class 508, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into 11 carriages per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers? A Stock Train and 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it even much more Larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. Then put the modernised 11 carriages per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 carriages per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly Line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Gardner 6LXC, Cummins M11, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner LG1200 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 87 Octagon and Every 48 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 147MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 147MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!!!, oh can you make all of those 18 Tonne Boxes of Coal for all of those 147MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!!!! So please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!!!!! And PLEASE do something about these very very important Professional ideas Please? Prime Minister of England, Prime Minister of Australia, Prime Minister of Sweden, Prime Minister of Germany, Prime Minister of Italy, Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.
@Fh961 - definitely. This one little set is responsible for every other set I have and every video you can see. Never underestimate the power of the smallest things lol
@The8WheelShunter - Do you mean the MBA 'Monster Box' wagons by Dapol? I got them from Trident Trains just outside Nantwich and they are filled with stones from the garden :)
Nice review! These little tiddler sets are brilliant for children but as you say, they are a bit simple for serious modelers like you and me :) It is strange how you can relate modern day shunters like these to the equivalent back in 1940 or whatever!... I think that the Class 08 is the equivalent to my favorite steam loco - the Pannier Tank... and a loco like this - the Class 06 is very like the little shunter that you get from Hornby when you join the club - you did a review of it too!
If you really wanted it to run smoothly you could swap the chassis around with the 2011 Hornbby collector club loco and paint the coupling rods yellow. Great video!
How much is the set and where can you buy it? I just turned 13 and I LOVE model trains but can never afford them because they cost so much. Do you have any tips cuz I think this one small set could spark up my railway and everything I ever imagined since I was 6 would come true
Realy loving your vids Intercity82, Its re-ignited my interest in the hobby too :P, Dug all my 15ish year old stuff out of the loft for a dust off. Where do you mostly buy your sets and loco's from? Thinking of buying some new loco's/sets ect myself now, Recomend any places?
I've got a class 06 and I have 3 minreal wagons, and then I put some 2p's and 1p's in the wagons so it make's it abit more slower then but it is to fast for a little desiel loco!

That's the magic of Hornby!
really nice to c some videos again!!! :)
@tml136 - I'll be setting up the Night Mail set as it comes out of the box, not sure if I will go back and do this one tho - as I might asked to do ALL if them then. lol
@somerandomalex - ahh yes, I know that set. Many sets like that have got people into the hobby - which is why they're so good.
Very good
and good to see you are doing more Videos

@modellerman - yeah it's a custom chip, custom weathering and detial too!
@YTisawsum - they are used for various things such as testing locos and powering accessories.
I got the coca cola christmas train set last year for my birthday , and like you that set really got me interested in collecting and expanding , its now an obsession LOL

Very nice set!
@cazy1395 - I sure do! A video on that is in the queue (the 40 video long queue)
5***s great vid, nice to see the videos are back.
@Fh961 - definitely. This one little set is responsible for every other set I have and every video you can see. Never underestimate the power of the smallest things lol
@dswear19 no, this is the set that got back into the hobby.
i might be getting this set for my birthday because i want to start model railroading
@Intercity82 thanks!. Shes so smooth, i can get her to go so slowly even on dc!
@TrackMaster555 - I recommend Hattons and I recommend the Cornish Pullman :) Check out Trident Trains too as they are happy to mail overseas.
@The8WheelShunter - Do you mean the MBA 'Monster Box' wagons by Dapol? I got them from Trident Trains just outside Nantwich and they are filled with stones from the garden :)
Nice review! @Whizzer1 - thank you! Yes - more are on their way
@2002And - I have a DCC sound Pannier tank :) A video on it is coming up
@Calum643
yeah you can,
they are fast but you can slow them down because of the power they have in them to do that sort of thing
lol the exact same thing this set reignited my passion for trains :D
the just brought this set back
@InterCity82 Thanks for the reply! Im thinking of picking up the Virgin Pendelino to start with. Looks ace going atround your track =).
OMG Your set up is sooooo Cool!!!!!
Honestly, I started this hobby with a Bachmann Percy, a Bachmann Train Controller, a Bachmann Power Pack, and a Bachmann Power Track.
the Night Mail set is great!
@loghead19 - it sure is! So I thought it would be fitting to re-commence my videos with this little beast :)
@matanuialive2010 - yup! more on their way too
@badboydoyle it gets absorbed into the layout usually.
It Took Me 1 Hr To Get The Set Out Becuase The Packaging Was So Tight AHHHHHH PS : There Was No Holes On The Back Of the Poly Rare !!! Great Vid
@jaannetts16 - hehe, thanks Jaike :) they sure are - time to catch up on yours too!!
@Calum643 - they do help a little, but they're mostly for show and realism
what's funny is that someone recreated that set in a game called Trainz Simulator 2012 (Trainz 12 for short)
@CONTHEWON17 - lol, new videos are being uploaded right now :)
@iloveclass37s - new videos are being uploaded right now :) (I was on holiday)
yay another video! does this mean there will be even more?
In the box!
@Calum643 do spring loaded buffers help or are they just for show?
How much is the set and where can you buy it? I just turned 13 and I LOVE model trains but can never afford them because they cost so much. Do you have any tips cuz I think this one small set could spark up my railway and everything I ever imagined since I was 6 would come true
@amg4472 - thank you! Ans yes, your collection, as with anyone's, can only grow :)
@xcvbnm125487 - haha. thanks - yes more videos are coming!
lol those couplings met my old mate the diamond edged slittling disc! 3 links to the rescue :D
Realy loving your vids Intercity82, Its re-ignited my interest in the hobby too :P, Dug all my 15ish year old stuff out of the loft for a dust off. Where do you mostly buy your sets and loco's from? Thinking of buying some new loco's/sets ect myself now, Recomend any places?
it's the Royal Train for a few years ago.
@TheRyanCarMan - yup!
Hi. What's the progress on a layout that's a little higher off your floor. I can't wait to see what you build.
I WANT THIS SET!!!
@ipodwindow - yeah, she's not bad - a bit fast but not bad at all
Craig does lots of DCC stuff with me. You could do a 'how to video'?
I've got a class 06 and I have 3 minreal wagons, and then I put some 2p's and 1p's in the wagons so it make's it abit more slower then but it is to fast for a little desiel loco!
I just brought a loco randomly and now im hooked lol
Is the Bachmann voyager compatible with that controller that you get in the goods master
Of course!
Contact Richard at Trident Trains, not too far from me. He has shipped sets to Australia before and knows what you need to do to make it work on your household current.
@cardiffjunction - I'd like a Southern Reigion brake van, the huge one
@CCMW2gaming yes I suppose you could, as long as they weren't too heavy and they wouldn't fall out etc.
@randomkid21000 - anywhere really. Any good model shop or online at shops like Trident Trains and Hattons
I have the exact same set; the only downside is the loco should not have the Hornby type HP motor.
You'll see in the coming vids.
hi intercity 82 I have got one of those locos and mine gos that fast it goes on two wheels round corners 🚅🚅🚅
haha YES - but would I be as happy and relaxed?
i got mine from hobbycraft in basingstoke where i live, unfortunately i had the last cheap set but they do it in other hobbycraft stores,
I recommend you get the hornby class 06 in Pullman livery that is a great train.
Do you have the flying Scotsman ??
Hello Intercity82 I rearly liked that video
How much track do you have from these sets? Do they make a large proportion of your layout?
nice train sets you have......5/5
i might get the good master...look goods
i might be gettin this set how long did it take to get all that
@Scruffdogspot - very good points!
Thanks!
@Calum643 - failed? No. They're just used for other things. Other hobbies and interests.
@InterCity82 huh cool a pannier tank! with sound? special job?
Are you going to do a review of the devon flyer?
There's an awful lot of sets that are very, VERY similar in terms of having a little 0-4-0 loco and a few wagons with an oval of track. I don't think there's a need to look at them all, as essentially, they're almost identical. Instead I will try to keep my reviews more varied.
I have that set.
Jon Furness
This little shunter is great i've got it. :)
@freightliner86501 - thanks!
since you have bought so many sets, what do you do with all of the controllers?
my non-permanent solution for the speed is adding weight too the train. Most of my small locos haul trucks with lumps of stone or metal in them.
do u have the falcon because right in the last minute and a half i think i see it.
freight or passenger?
