  • Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)
Morceaux de fantaisie, Op. 3 (1892)
    No. 1 - Elegie in E♭minor. Moderato - Più vivo - Tempo I
    Nikolai Lugansky, 2023
    From Moscow Philharmonic www.youtube.co...
“...Because of the popularity of the Prelude, the Opus 3 pieces are rarely played as a group. When they are, the range and subtlety of Rachmaninov’s compositional genius (even at the age of nineteen) become apparent. The emotional range is wide: from the deep tragedy of the Prelude to the joyous character of the Serenade, and the whimsy of Polichinelle. The subtlety is shown by the fact that a tiny melodic cell-the semitonal fall, or its extension the whole-tone step and their inversions-is heard at the beginning of every one of the five pieces. Whilst it is too much to claim that this gives the pieces a unity of organic strength (of which Rachmaninov was certainly capable), it is fascinating to see how this tiny cell is used again and again in these pieces. In passing, one should note also that this semitonal fall begins the Dies irae, almost the idée fixe in this composer’s mature compositions. [...]”

The first 150 seconds (The A-section) of this wonderful piece is accessible to intermediate level amateurs who know how to read music and have some ideas about the world we live in. If I were a piano teacher, I'd try to inspire my adult students to spend more time at the piano learning how to play great, emotional themes like this one. Music is meant to be performed like in the days before the radio and gramophone.

I consider myself an intermediate amateur pianist and I can assure this whole piece is accessible. I learnt it in only a month, I thought it would have taken much more time but it really isn't that hard.
It's one of the best pieces to learn, and one of the easiest Rach pieces out there.

@@danibv1291 i kinda agree with you but the middle of the B-section insanely hard. You need a lot of control on the piano. But it is not impossible if you study slow and slow. Also the coda is pretty challenging.

@@danibv1291 Good for you :)) keep practising and soon you'll be an advanced level amateur pianist, you will then be able to play most of Rachmaninoff's pieces with skill and control. And why not the Chopn etudes. There are only 27 of them. Might as well learn the Scherzi and Ballades too. Good luck my friend.

I would say this piece is actually quite inaccessible, personally. Hitting all the right notes is the easy part, but the dynamics and control you need to play this and have it sound GOOD is incredibly difficult. (Especially if you’re on a piano with heavier keys.) But at least it’s not a piece that requires giant hands! Although it’s a great piece to teach int amateurs anyway. The jumps and parts where you cross your hands over one another are great to get more ‘mobility’ in playing, and the whole B section is a very fun exercise. A shame the shapes in Eb minor are all so wonky… but that’s a part of the learning, too.
