    You've convinced me, I want the biggest baddest chipper I can build myself.

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  Місяць тому

      I agree this thing is far too small for real work.

      @@mossyrootsfarm2263 I watched a bunch of videos on how to build them, I like this one, it really eats trees
      ua-cam.com/video/5e6xYMZsgIY/v-deo.html
      He used a wide drum with blades welded on instead of a small axle with removable blades. Geared down to nice low rpm with tons of torque. The most creative one I saw was someone who reused a car transmission to gear speeds up or down, and even put it in reverse if something got stuck. You can also build it to connect to your tractor PTO. I think I want mine electric.

    At 4:24, you put things in perspective. The video is worth it for just these comments alone! LOL! All around good vid. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Our local Harbor Freight manager says that these things are hard to come by in the summer.

      Mine was the last one they had in stock. I made sure they had it before I went to pick it up. I did miss a great weekend deal though. Paid full price for mine but just a day before it was almost 100 bucks off.

    What do you ues for cutting limbs up small that way the wood chipper takes them

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  5 місяців тому

      It depends on what size the limb is or if it's a log. I bought some gear drive pruners for if it's a limb that needs shortened or something. If I'm making them out of logs I use a log splitter to get them close then I use a hatchet to split them further. This is definitely a labor intensive way to get wood chips. But it costs 100-1000x more to buy a wood chipper that can handle even 4 inch limbs let alone one that can handle a 8inch log.

    Just burn the piece of wood over 3”.

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  2 місяці тому

      I could if that was my desire. Big pieces don't fit in my smaller smoker which is why I need these small chunks

  • @Norm2120

    You gotta be smarter than the piece of equipment you’re using. It’s designed for tree limbs and branches not chunks of wood that should be used for kindling and the top part with the hopper is a shredder not a chipper it’s designed for leaves and small branches/twigs

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  5 місяців тому

      Well I'm sorry you feel that way. The design flaw I'm discussing here is that the neck of the main chipper portion narrows. So I can put a branch in that is smaller than the opening, then gets stuck in the chipper, that then requires disassembly to correct said problem. My easy solution is to use a 2 cent piece of plastic to solve my constant need to disassemble the unit. While I in fact used it for its purpose. I did not show me using it as its very loud and you would not be able to hear a word I said. I also only happened to have "kindling" as a reference tool. I do wish you the best of luck in understanding that a 3 inch limb is the exact same thing as a 3 inch piece of fire wood.

    How often do you have to sharpen the blades?

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  4 місяці тому

      I have not sharpened them yet. I'm not sure how long it will last. I'm not even 100% sure they can be easily sharpened. You may need to tear half the machine apart.

    What kind of wood splitter do you ues

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  5 місяців тому

      Tractor supply special. It's not even mine, I'm borrowing my father-in-law's splitter. But it works beautifully to chunk up big stuff to the size needed to run it through the chipper.

    or put it in the other way

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  2 місяці тому

      If I put the wood in the other direction it will also get stuck. However if you're referencing using the top for logs, its a different shredder design that does not like large logs.

  • @ryanfrankum3493

    Can you send me a picture of which one you use

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  5 місяців тому

      I don't think I can send a picture through here but it is the county line 32 ton log splitter from tractor supply. Most of the gas log splitters are similar enough that the brand doesn't matter. I have never used an electric one but I see no reason those would not work.

    I have this wood chipper and it stinks. But if you make biochar it will grind it up good. Then I will feed it to my sheep or chickens.

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263

      I never thought of using it for biochar. That's a fantastic idea

    Replace the hammer blade bolts ASAP WITH GRADE 5 bolts... if you break one shredding too large of stuff using the hopper like i did you'll be pretty miserable. I'm actually just going to replace every nut and bolt on the thing because they're all junk. Thankfully the shredder blades are contained enough not to allow them to yeet themselves out when the bolt shears...

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  4 місяці тому

      I have wondered about that. When I first started using it all was good and quiet. Now it seems like a pack of angry beavers. I may have some loose bolts as it is. Thank you.

    I try this in it works good but it takes to much fuck time I not doing I buy a bigger wood chipper before I doing this again

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263

      Oh I absolutely agree. I wish I would have dropped 5-8k and got a 3pt hitch mount chipper. I could have thrown 8inch logs into it and had no problem. But I just couldn't justify the cost for the small amount of trees I have to clean up.

    So bad I only used for 30 mins and it's going back to HF.

    • @mossyrootsfarm2263
      @mossyrootsfarm2263  6 місяців тому

      I will say I'm generally impressed with HF and there products. But I do find the chipper to be a tad irritating to use. Like the fact that it will suck chunks of wood in that are too big to chip. Which is why I use the PVC pipe now. And the fact that any chips that are made get blown across the yard instead of in a nice pile.

    • @adamconnell5965
      @adamconnell5965 4 місяці тому

      Once they break in they're a totally different animal... but yeah I'm regretting not getting the warranty after sheering the shredder bolts. It's got a ton of potential, but a poorly thought out design mixed with trash hardware. Once modded it should absolutely slay though!

      well if I fired up the machine you wouldn't be able to hear me say anything. I also didn't have a stand for my pipe so I could not show using it while holding the camera.
