A fun fact is this movie has become an interesting topic of discussion for us in Indonesia.
There are several conclusions we have as audiences in Indonesia:
    1. Religious audiences will consider this film as their religious propaganda, confirming their faith that the grave torture is true.
    2. Non-religious audiences will see the incident after the scene where the main character is buried with the antagonist until the incident of coming out of the grave is just the NDE (Near Death Experience) of the main character. Which means that the main character is already dying while lying with the antagonist's body in the grave because she runs out of oxygen (Don't forget about the snake that passed the main character's brother, that is the key to why they are dying). & when experiencing the NDE, the main character experiences hallucinations about what she fears. That the grave torture is real and exists.
I am a Muslim, The grave torture is a Muslim faith. But I agree more with the conclusion of point 2.
Joko Anwar himself in various interviews in the Indonesian media, completely leaves the conclusion of this film to the public who watch it.

This horror movie is exceptionally well made. There are only a few horror films that gave me such an uncomfortable feeling. It felt like a very bad acid trip through hell.
I'm in Jakarta right now. In the evening I'm watching Indonesian movies. I saw a lot of movies, but this one was by far the best.
There are however things that are confusing to me too. What happened to the brother? Was all this part of her bad trip. Did he really go away to his work, washing a corpse, and being attacked by evil ghosts, while her sister was in a grave with a dead guy? . I find that hard to believe. But when he opened the grave, why did he looked like he was severely beaten up? That's what I didn't understand. Maybe I've missed something.
But overall, I found this movie very creepy.

Joko wrote, directed, & edited this. I think he'd benefit from at least working with an editor or fully just hiring one. I almost gave up & just fast forwarded to the action parts, but I stuck with it. What are you doing step demon kill was great & all but the ending was awesome even being cgi.

If I had to say anything, the way they take this movie is that it had too much things to say, and I really think that this movie also feel like it trying to hard to be cryptic. But there's a few points that really hit the mark. To straighten up things that make you confused I'll try to explain things as best as I could, I'm just sorry if my English was bad and confusing to read.
This movie was not something that trying to answer anything, it more like a play out of every question that most Muslim's had about the concept of the after grave. So I understand the confusion, because even for us it's a concept that we could never understand unless we experience it first hand. To answer your confusion just take it like this, what happened inside the grave is merely a testament of your faith, it's not the full judgment it's just a test to proven your faith to the God and to the Prophet, because in there we will be only asked two questions, Who's your god? and who's your prophet? For those who unable to answer it will be torture until the time of the real judgment, and for those who can, they may rest in peace until the time to woke up again.
Beside that for me this movie also commenting on how people take religion, with how they share it, how they apply it, and how they consumed it. Not just that, it's comment on the religious ego that people tend to have, thinking they all high and mighty just because they pray much often than other, or contribute more than other, that they think all that points will cover them if they sinned.
Joko Anwar really try to grab more than the movie supposed to be, which really harms it. Because really there's no way for this movie to cover it story about witnessing the grave torture with a linear story telling. But it say a lot of thing, but ended up with less explaination on what have to be explained. This movie didn't have to answer anything, it's just need to be more focus and coherent into what it want to tell.

I just watched the movie. As someone with an Islamic background, I think the movie was straight up criticizing religion and the victim blaming in religious societies. Also, the sister was suffocating (early in the movie, it showed that the pipe got clogged), and the lack of oxygen made her hallucinate all the events.

Sounds similar to the movie Sublime (2007) but instead of a religious stance this it’s from a medical stance.

i just watched that movie yesterday , it was long , slow and confusing when it comes to the ending, but i have read a review that explains alot of it, i dont want to spoil anything so i wont go into it.
however, from a religious perspective , I'm a muslim and there were some of the things that were not aligned with the religion in this movie.
We believe as Muslims in grave torture , however , its only for those who have committed really big sins , such as what Wahyu did , but no one knows what is it exactly or how it is going to be, on the other hand, people who have been doing good deeds all their lives will be in a luxurious life in their graves until judgment day, when they will move to the eternal paradise and receive whatever they desire, free of pain and suffering.
to be honest i found the snake with multiple heads and the demon funny, lastly, when washing the deceased , we do not uncover private areas , the movie showed that.
Appreciate the discussion guys as i was looking for people who watched this movie.
