Wow thats a rare car now not seen many surviving subaru,s of this age .Datsuns were also great for rot to be honest it has survived quite well well worth this one being restored then off top some jdm car meets .
I had an '81 Datsun Sunny. The bodywork sort of fell off around the excellent mechanicals.
If I had a garage I’d gladly take this. Would make a great second car along side my Legacy Twin Turbo.

I've got the wagon version of this, parents bought it new circa 1981. Fully restored it myself and now it's my daily. Astounding you've found one over there in such clean condition, the windscreen corners aren't even rusted out and they were the first thing to go over here in dry Australia!

I remember these were really popular with farmers in my area, and even those of allied trades - one of my uncles was a potato merchant and he had one for visiting the farms. I had no doubt about that car starting, and I see I was right. Thanks for the entertainment, gentlemen!

There's a buyer for that somewhere, they are a rare beast most rotted away and there is a good following for Japanese classics and Subarus, doesn't look like it would take too much to restore this one and even comes with the missing bits, put it on the Bay or Mathewsons Auction

This era of the little Suby was still very much underrated. In New Zealand though, a bloke named Peter "Possum" Bourne made them a household name with the vehicles he drove - both locally and internationally in the WRC - and I can say for all certainly that I've not driven or owned anything else so quick on gravels roads. I've owned a 1974 1400DL 4-door saloon and a 1985 Leone 1.8GF 4-door saloon (which was the wedge-shaped generation after this one). Being an 85 registered GLF-5 would put the one you have as one of the last of this shape manufactured / assembled. I drove several of the 81-84 GLF generation while working for Subaru NZ in the mid 80s. My favourite in the pool was what WE called the Leone 1.8 GLF-5, which was a quad-headlight, 2-door 1800cc coupe style. The one we had available in the pool had electronic dash, factory sunroof and all the trimmings. Even though the 1.6 GLF was a smaller engine, it still had plenty of poke and that signature sound that the boxer engine produces. Subarus of the 80s, when compared with other manufacturers, were always a cut above in style and comfort and their seat material, carpets and other interior materials always lasted way longer than the competitors. In my view, the frameless doors gave it a touch of style unmatched by anything else in its class too. If I was in the UK, I'd snap that little beasty up before I finished typing this sentence.....but as I am half a world away and we still see a few on our roads (all with much higher milage though), it doesn't make financial sense. However, I hope someone rescues it because - as you say - she's much too good to part out. All the best

My mum had one in blue. 5 speed box was like wow coz cortina’s etc had a 4 speed. Mega reliable but rust killed it

These subarus 80 had the boxer engine called EA boxer engine

EA were at the start a bit weak but subaru fixed it with EA 1.6 dl version as it was powerfull and a revoloution all over the world 93 HP when at that time it was
