    I never seen snowball plants before, but a week ago I bumped into one at Home Depot. Just one, hiding among hydrensia. I don’t like white flowers, but liked that flowers on picture looked almost identical to hydrensia.We live in Northen Nevada and hydros do not survive here. So, I was actually happy to find out that snowballs are hardy. And your information was very helpfull. Size of your shrub gave me even more excitement. Interstingly that we are in the same 5 zone, but we have late snow for couple days. Can't wait for planting my snowball

    I have these and I love them. After a big rain I go out and give the branches a good jiggle to get the extra water out of the blooms which weighs down the branches and makes them get saggy and lean down. Mine get full sun and are 15 ft apart with roses and perennials in between. I highly recommend these especially if you want to fill a large space or want a gorgeous privacy screen.

    Hi Kelly! I have a Chinese snowball viburnum that exploded with blooms the third year. But the blooms smelled really bad, lol! I don’t know if I need to cut them while they’re green to enjoy them. And I think it’s the Chinese snowball in particular. It grows well in poor soil, full sun and drought conditions (Dallas area). How wonderful that you are sharing your beautiful flowers with the church to celebrate first communion!

    You are making light of a serious matter. Invasive plants, like Bradford pears, ARE a big deal. In the spring, Bradford pears are ubiquitous in New England …mile after mile on the side of highways.

    Hi Kelly, I'm Michelle, I garden in zone 7a East TN. I just bought my 1st Snowball Viburnum. It was the last one at the garden center. Are there different Snowball viburnums? The leaves on yours are different from the one I bought. We get a lot of spring freezes here. They have names for each one at specific times of each month. I did lose some beautiful perennials this year due to the extreme warmth to the extreme cold and freeze. I did cover them too but sometimes it's mother nature. I'm hoping to find this plant here, it's gorgeous!

      @@KellyLehman , I have to kill the larvae in early Spring, the beetles in Summer and cut the tricks with the eggs off in Fall. I didn't know to buy Snowball Viburnum variety that are less susceptible to Viburnum beetles 10 years ago. Now, my Snowball is too big and I'm lazy to replace it with another one. It's cucumbersome to deal with the Viburnum beetles every year, but the flowers are worth it.

    • @lovehandr
      @lovehandr 2 роки тому

      Viburnum beetles wiped this plant out in my garden years ago. It was a favourite of my grandmother, but you never see it in the city anymore. I think this pest is devastating where it is common. Both the larvae and beetles defoliate the plant. Two defoliations a year is too much for a plant to handle. Too bad it is not growable in this area anymore. Previously, it was so easy and rewarding. Now, forget it.

    The reason Peonies don't transplant well is because people plant them too deep in the ground. The flowering stems need to be planted level with the ground that way the plant will flower the same season

      Your instincts are correct. They loose their leaves like the hydrangeas. I don't prune mine back but but you can prune it right after it the blooms turn brown in spring if you like . The snowball blooms come in on old wood .

    Hi Kelly! Mary from WNY here. In the beginning of your video you said they didn’t bloom for a couple years. Well, I have learned, from some of my experienced gardening friends, that when you move a plant or plant a new one, not to be discouraged. Remember this saying… “First year they sleep, 2nd year creep, 3rd year leap.” Sometimes there is a 2 year creep, which I found out with my peonies, so having patience is crucial to gardening. This saying is , for the most part, true. There is always an exception, but I thought I’d share. ☺️

    I moved to a property where one is growing and it's estimated to be between 15-20 yrs old, according to my neighbor. It's thinning at the top and there's a lot of dead wood in there which I plan to trim after the flowers are gone. Right now in mid-May, the new lime colored snowballs are popping up. The flowers on my tree do not get as big as the ones you showed. Not sure if that's a different variety or other factor. I am trying to root some new ones, so it's good to know how long they take to produce blooms.

      Hi Sonya, are the branches on the side of the viburnum that are not leading out dead ? You can tell by cutting a section of it and if it’s white inside it means the branch is dead . If this is the case , cut it out . If the viburnum branch has some green inside it means it’s alive and should come back next year .
      Any chance some deer ate off the early leaves ?

    Thank you for showing us about viburnum. Got my first two plants this year. I might have missed it, but do you prune at the same time as the hydrangeas? Have a great weekend, from Massachusetts - Lynn

      Hy Lynn👋👋 If you prune your snowball bush viburnum ,them do them now as they re just loosing their flowers . They are similar to the hydrangeas that have flowers coming in on old wood . Next years flowers are being put in place soon . 🤗🌸 Iam going to make a video based on your comment . Thank you for the inspiration !

      @@KellyLehman Hi Kelly: Glad I could help you help us. Mine are plants that I got in 4 inch pots. I've noticed that they're starting to grow like weeds but no wood yet. I look forward to the video. Hope you're able to stay cool this weekend. Massachusetts is supposed to get up to 90 (or higher). Thank you!

    Not much information about actually growing the plant!!

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  2 роки тому

      Once you plant this , there is not much to do as far as maintenance . I explained how to cut it back when it starts to take over other plants which is the biggest obstacle .

    I am in Orlando- Zone 9- what a shame I cannot grow this type of Viburnum. My entire yard is surrounded by Viburnum -some actually smell horrible...LOL- I f I ever move, I want to be in Zone 8!!! Not too cold but so many more choices of vegetation!

      Ahhh , sounds like you are in a hot zone . I'll bet you love it in winter though . Have you tried growing oakleaf hydrangea or smooth hydrangea ? They usually do well in zone 9 .
