Apparently, Generations 3DS was made in only six months. Considering Sonic’s history with rushed development, it’s honestly a miracle this game is as functional as it is.

It's a short 2Dish Game, possibly reusing Rush/Colors/Sonic 4's framework (But somehow doing far, far better with the Classic physics here than they did with either Episode).
Also, like half of the levels aren't even new layouts. Green Hill Act 1, Casino Night Act 1, Mushroom Hill Act 1, and I think Water Palace Act 1 and Tropical Resort Act 1 are just straight up ported from their original games. But that one could be because of the rushed development.
@@DarkLink1996. Water Palace and Tropical Resort are not ports. Rush and Colors are boost 2D games, it wouldn't work with classic Sonic. Though some parts of the original stages are still there in Generations 3DS. But the stages overall are different

I remember when this game was coming out and people were theorising that it'd focus on Sonic's handheld career, pretty sure in the end all we got was on zone from Rush and nothing from the Game Gear games, lots of missed potential there really.
And nothing from the Sonic Advance games either. :P
There are remixes (at least I think they are) of levels from all three advance games in the music selection thing from the console game (Neo Green Hill, Leaf Forest, and Route 99). Maaaaaybe this was something planned but cut early on? I mean probably not. The only one I could really see working without being redundant would be route 99 though

Agreed. Would have been really neat if instead of the genesis levels they were game gear levels, with bosses like Knack.
@MsMads Sort of. The first 2 were demakes, and shared some names with zones but completely different levels. All the game gear games after that were original games.
The 3DS version was so good, and was how I experienced Generations. I put so many hours into it and knowing that it was the same team who did Rush I can understand why I loved it so much.
I had always wondered if this game was a low-key "Rush 4" in the same way that Sonic Colors DS was a low-key "Rush 3"

this was literally my first ever game I got as a child, I played it a lot on my 2ds
This is the only version of the game I’ve played and tbh I think it kind of sucks. It was the first game I ever felt I wasted money on.
In addition to the levels being from Sonic handheld entires, I really wish the rival battles on 3DS were different as well. Fang the Sniper, Emerl, & Blaze would’ve been incredible, as per each era.
I just left basically the same comment, and then scrolled down and saw this... Which makes it even more upsetting that they didn't actually do it.

I loved the 3DS version of Sonic Generations enough to get all S-Ranks and clear every mission. Now, having _just_ finished doing the same in the console version for the first time, it did make it difficult to go back to the 3DS version, but I still admire what it did different...
Side-note: Metal Sonic was programmed to be Sonic's exact replica, to the point where he thinks like Sonic. If Sonic has a gambling addiction, Metal is losing all his rings in the same casino.
Metal sonic wasn't programed to have the same mind as sonic. So no he didn't get his gambling addiction from sonic. Robots have processors, not minds😂 and anyway, it was a joke anyway.
Jon's on-camera delivery with GVG is a little more Scott the Woz than he was at NintendoLife. Really enjoying the personality.
The 3DS version of Generations actually made the Egg Emperor into a fun fight for me. I will always give the game credit for managing to pull that feat off.
I honestly love this version a lot when I was small! It was cool unlocking all the different songs throughout the franchise history and listen to them anytime on the go like a MP3.

So glad to see Jon making content like this. At this point he might as well become the unofficial Nintendo 3DS ambassador. Clearly he has a soft spot for it, and so do we.
Okay, but can we all agree that the rival fights were a missed opportunity in the 3DS version? Like, instead of races, why couldn't they just recreate fights against characters like Blaze and Gemerl?
The game was made in 6 months.
God, I can't believe it's been over 10 years since this game released. And I still think it's one of Sonic's best games. (The console version, not the 3DS one)
It's still an awesome game. One of my all time favorites.
Plus, being able to listen to the music tracks you unlock whilst its in sleep mode was also something I loved

Finally! A sequel to "Spider-Man 3 is a Game"! I'm still on board with this series of games that are completely different on other platforms.
When Sonic Generations came out, I was so hyped, but I didn’t have a PC or any consoles the game came out on, so the 3DS version was all I had for at least a few years. Definitely one of my most replayed 3DS games, I think it’s a great time in its own way.

Crazily, had it not been for the Biolizard fight on 3DS Generations, I might've never beaten it in the original game. I had been stuck at that fight for years until playing the 3DS fight in 2011.

I LOVED this version! Got all the S Ranks, did all the Missions and played online a ton. People sure loved the Bonus Stage online.
Heck yeah! I love 3DS generations! Water palace alone is worth the price tag.

Sonic Generations is easily one of my favorite Sonic games of all time, and while the 3DS version wasn't the Greatest it was still an amazing time for me ☺️
At least Big Arm has one of the best boss songs I've ever heard, song slaps for a boss that's over relatively quickly
Something really clever about this version of Tropical Resort in particular is that it pulls from both the Wii and DS versions of the stage - Classic's level is moreso based off the DS one, with the Red Wisp heavily used in it and some mechanics exclusive to that version, whilst the Modern level is based off the Wii version, with specific set pieces and designes from that version and the cyan wisp which is only used in Wii resort (Cyan's in the water and coaster levels in the DS version) Clever way to split modern / classic in a way which makes sense in the context of the og game.
My brother and I both had our own copy of the 3DS and grew up playing all of our games on them. Thus, we were stuck playing the 3DS version of generations. It wasn't until about 2 or 3 years later until we went to Hawaii and stayed in a hotel with a PS3 when we could play the console version of generations. Good times.
I have an interesting history with _Sonic Generations_ on 3DS that actually taught me a lot about doing research and saving money.
Around 2018 or so, I bought the game assuming it was going to play just like the home console version as I really wanted to play Crisis City (since I grew up with Sonic ‘06 and still have fondness for the game). After I bought the game, I found out it was different from the home console version and didn’t include Crisis City (or any ‘06 location), meaning I had just burned my money due to my lack of proper research.
After realizing I wasted my money for no good reason, that heavily influenced me to stop paying money for games outside of my top 5 video game series. During college, I had an extremely bad habit of overspending for games, so that incident with Generations on 3DS essentially taught me to being more careful with my money.
As a result, I basically stopped buying or playing any new games that weren’t from my favorite series for a good 3 years. In fact, I went a solid 17 months after finishing _Xenoblade Chronicles 2_ where I didn’t even touch my Switch until _Fire Emblem: Three Houses_ came out. It wasn’t until late 2021 when I finally decided to branch out and try SMTV for the first time.
Similar story but with sonic unleashed on Wii.
I received a copy of the 3DS version of Sonic Generations as a Christmas present when I was eleven.
And I had already been hyped about playing it after viewing tons of videos on UA-cam showing footage of the PS3 version.
I was initially disappointed when I played it for the first time that day, but it soon grew on me and quickly became a treasured game.
It has flaws but that's part of the charm in my opinion.
It's almost like a call back to infamous glitches throughout the series, making the 3DS version the true Sonic Generations lol.
loved the 3DS version and never saw the middling reception it got despite the classic sonic levels being direct copy & pastes from their original counterparts.

Just played this as a result of watching the video a while ago. It was a really fun experience and the mission mode is a great way to burn a few minutes waiting for the bus. Great recommendation!
3DS Generations was my first Sonic game. Well, technically it was my little brother’s game that he got for his birthday, but it was our first Sonic game.
Also I already had Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
In the console version, I am pretty sure you only need the red rings from Planet Wisp to get the classic homing attack.

Metal Sonic is a robot replica of Sonic, right? And Sonic has a gambling addiction. So Eggman installed Sonic’s gambling addiction into Metal Sonic, and that’s why he’s gambling in Casino Night. That’s my reasoning

Sonic Generations on 3DS has a special place in my heart. That game was my first 3DS game ever!
The game was surprisingly, visually impressive and the soundtrack was utter bangers
The feel of momentum was great and whenever there were 3D segments it just looked very impressive
But I also fully agree with the flaws you pointed out with this game.
I started playing again for the first time in 6 months. In terrible at sonic games but it's a great game

The one I found to get very frustrating in the 2nd half of the game. With bullshit QuickTime events, and terrible special stages. The one I completely disregarded after playing one level of the console version. Yeah I still liked it as a kid, but there was also so much I hated about it. And I eventually sold it. But idk, maybe I'll pick it up again
Man I forgot about the 3DS one. I loved Mushroom Hill Zone. I loved finding the giant ring locations.

I was ADDICTED to Generations 3DS for awhile. MAD AS HELL that I don't have it anymore. I actually never played the console version.
Fun Fact (Rumor): 3DS Generations is originally going to be a PSP game in early development. (As with possibly Wii port). Then Sega decided it remove to the nintendo handheld, only at six month work before the game release. Making it the most short sonic game development.
I honestly had not played a Sonic game since Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast until Sonic Mania. It is interesting to see some things I missed.
As not a sonic fan; hearing Generations, which I thought was newer, just turned 11... well it gave me whiplash and now im scared lol.
Sonic Generations for 3DS was the first Sonic game I ever played and as of now is the only one I’ve beaten.
Colors DS has always been far superior to the Wii version. He feels great to control all the time, while Wii feels... fine in the few 3D sections, and feels awful in 2D. The acts in DS are also much more fleshed out even though there's fewer of them, and it's got a really cool epilogue when you collect all the red rings. Also, void and burst are just more fun than the ones they replaced from Wii, which feel more like extensions of his movement and actual power ups, rather than tying the spin dash and the light speed dash to a wisp power, which was super lame. Other characters make appearances for the extra missions too. It's just a much better experience.
Speak for yourself. As I see it, the DS game is a cheap cash-in.

@@sonicboy678 bruh, it's easily the best of the Rush games. And it feels different enough to the first two because the color powers are actually incorporated into the game in a tasteful way. Plus, the presentation and level design are the strongest they've been in that series.
Are you just saying it just because it uses the same design philosophy as the Rush games??? If so, literally no one loses out on having another one of those games as opposed to not having one at all.
@@bctalicorn809 The most interesting part of the DS game is Game Land. Pretty much everything else is bland as hell, infuriating, or shoehorned in.
actually one thing i can note from metal being in casino night is he is in a circus in sonic rivals
i don't know any definite similarities between casino night and that circus zone other than the palette

I've had a 3DS XL for about 8 years, and the only games that are on my list that I haven't played are Metroid Samus Returns and this. The last great portable Sonic game :')
Sonic generations 3ds i still have the game i love it the only thing is that i wanted more stages. Ive 100% the game. Its fun to do time attack
You forgot to mention that there it also comes with a mission mode, which is pretty fine but which no one without a jailbroken 3ds ever completed, as unlocking each mission costs you 5 play coins (you got 1 play coin by shaking the 3ds 100 times (referred to as "walking 100 steps" by Nintendo)) and there are 100 missions

nice video man, I think the 3DS version is pretty fun but there’s so much missed potential. Instead of the Genesis, Dreamcast, and Modern eras they could’ve done GameGear, Gameboy Advance, and DS eras. The games being Sonic 1, 2, & Triple Trouble. Advance 1, 2, and 3. And then Sonic Rush, Rush Adventure, and Colors DS. At least we got Colors DS and Rush representation but still. The rival fights could’ve been different too like Blaze instead of Silver, maybe Fang instead of Metal Sonic? There’s a lot they could’ve done

Ah-ha! John is very correct! BUT!… Due to vs mode in Sonic Adventure 2 Sonic could play on the level so technically it is one. I know I’m 5 months late but I love John’s narration and will watch everything he puts out. Just got a lot of stuff to do.
I played the 3DS version first, because i didn't have a console that could play Sonic Generations yet (xbox one wasn't backward compatible at the time) so i've always had a spot in my heart for the 3DS one

This was an early game in my 3DS library, and while it was never my favorite, it was a really satisfying title to boot up when I got bored. I'm grateful this game was around in my life.
Might just be the English accent but Jon’s humor reminds me a lot of John Oliver (an imposter Jon I guess). Especially the frog banging and his yelling about Arkham Asylum.
This was my first Sonic game and got me into the series entirely! So happy to see it get some love

The 3DS version is very underrated and I find it the best version. I wish they made a port for the Nintendo Switch with both versions together.

I wouldn’t say it’s better than the console version personally, but it was a solid alternative for Sonic fans who only has a 3DS at the time and not an XB360 or PS3.

My favorite thing about this game is the Big Arms boss that can be beat in 30 seconds but has one of the best songs in the whole soundtrack
My son says he likes both of them because he didn't know which ones better so I heard him say both
I actually got the 3DS Port I seem to like it! Back then it was for Mushroom Hill Zone since the PS3/Xbox360 Port had Sky Sanctuary Zone when you Reach the Sonic and Knuckles Era

I'm actually happy we don't have Heroes special stages (or any pipe for that matter) in the console version, I suck at those.
The lack of proper modern stages made me ignore the 3DS version also but if you go with the original idea for Adventure 2, Sonic would actually have been run through Radical Highway and probably also fight Biolizzard.
the time eater boss is WAY much better on here then given credit for. theres an actual fight to go through if you want to win, because if you get hit by the time eaters attack, no rings spawn, and the only way you get rings is by being good at the fight and dodging. its entirely possible to lose from his basic attacks if your not caring because you are invincible. he will even redo the attack one more time to make sure your actually dodging them.
i feel like this version was originally on ds and when the 3ds came out they were like "oh no"
Water Palace and Tropical Resort classic stages aren't ports. They share similar bits of the original levels but that ends there

You can't hate on Classic Sonic with the homing attack too much! Once I got the Homing Attack for Classic on consoles; I only realized how much I took it for granted! It's Definitely something Classic Sonic should have!

This was the only version of generations I had and I loved it! Never was able to beat the final boss but I still had a lot of fun!

Another thing i love about this version besides everything mentioned in the video is that nearly all the stages are super fun to speedrun, especially when you're able to pull off constant small skips in them by thinking outside of the box trying to mix the fastest routes.
In fact, my favorite one by far is Radical Highway Act 1 bc of how satisfying is to get them. And ever since i first got my hands on the game i've replayed this act so much that for the longest time i even held one of the top 5 records on the leaderboards.
I don't know if it's been beaten already since i haven't revisited it in months, but yeah. I absolutely LOVE this game
The soundtrack for the 3DS version was really good too. All the tracks were put on the full OST. Except one. Kinda.
In the E3 demo for the Big Arms boss, a new remix of the Doomsday Zone music was used, but when the game released, the proper Big Arms music was used instead. The Doomsday Zone music was never put on the OST or released anywhere else.
You'd almost sold me Jon, I was about to go buy the 3DS version, but then you said there's no Chronicles level.... :(
I've got them both, and yeah there pretty fun.
Tropical Resort actually does take some cues from the Wii version, as shown in the credits, even if it is mainly based on the DS one.
I always thought Water Palace was Apatos from Unleashed. Those buildings are like legit the same.
As a kid I didnt even know Generations 3DS was different and i didnt get why people loved Generations so much.
The 3DS version had so much potential but eh Sega ended up squandering it for a cheap cash in and the quality really shows. The Advance and Rush games had more love and effort put into them. I am just glad that I got it for £15 and not paid full price as it was not worth full price. I also haven't replayed it since beating it, whereas I have replayed the console version many many times. More so now that I have it on PC.
In fact with the steam deck, the PC version of Sonic Generation pretty much replaces the need for a portable Sonic Generation.

IMHO the 3DS version is the ultimate version of Lost World too! It feels like the team made this version afterwards, when they had a much better idea of how to take advantage of the engine they developed. Level design is _so_ superior on the 3DS! Jon, why not tackle _this_ comparison next?
the egg emperor fight is actually kind of different since eggman is actually piloting it now, as opposed to neo metal sonic piloting it in sonic heroes

I really wish they went deeper with the handheld appreciation. The game literally has Rival battles like Sonic Rivals. You got Stardust Speedway and The Ark for console, why not Sky Park and Chaotic Inferno for 3DS?
This was the version I played for years. (I only played the console version a few months ago) and I always liked it! Wish it had more handheld stuff though. Would have been cool to see revamped stages for game gear, advance, and more rush stuff as well as handheld bosses and rivals such as fang or blaze
