    12:00 I've noticed this about Simon, and about Catherine as well. Neither seems to have a very deep emotional connection to their situations or to the world around them. Simon tries to reconnect with his humanity, and Catherine seems frankly bored by his attempts. She also doesn't seem to care about any of the other robot copies they come across, and while Simon seems to empathize at first, he still goes along with Catherine's plans even if they result in "death" or "torture". It suggests to me that something got lost in translation, a key element of humanity that can't be copied. Not the 'soul', or at least not the supernatural definition of a soul, but something inherent to the human condition that didn't make its way from the real people to these facsimiles.

    “Get scanned and wake up as a bus” bro what about one of the doors? The microwave? The TV? The alarm clock? Simon is _so_ lucky he happened to wake up in a sort of diving suit that just so happens to not only have functional legs, arms, and hands with all fingers attached that also is vaguely human shaped. Even the bus would be able to move, at least. Everyone else woke up as a fuckin printer or their office desktop computer like Catherine, suddenly completely immobile.

    This game gives me an existential crisis.
    It's hard to explain what this is all about but I think the "coin toss" metaphor they use is best. It's almost like if you draw a line on a piece of paper where the line is your consciousness going through your life, and the scan is you starting a second line, exactly like the first one. Now there's two lines. But if you stop the first line it doesn't *BECOME* the second line. It just ends.
    If you kill yourself, your consciousness doesn't become your scans, its just over. The new consciousness won the coin toss and gets to be the one who survived in the arc. Not you. You will never be in the arc.
    Which is scary af. And I love it.

    • @minapazderak5867
      @minapazderak5867 4 роки тому +12

      @Bleh yeah. I think she tries to communicate to you that you're where you are and that's it, but Simon really doesn't want to believe that.
      That being said, I'd still do a scan even if it meant I'd lost the coin toss. I know that the me that won would always be thankful for it, because I would, obviously. Its a scary thought, but a fascinating one.
      I think a REALLY interesting thing in this game that I don't hear people talking about it that everyone says Catherine doesn't talk and is shy and weird and creepy.... but the Catherine we're talking to isn't like that at all. Sure she's kinda socially inept but not anything like she's described as, a "scared mouse"...

    • @minapazderak5867
      @minapazderak5867 4 роки тому +8

      @Bleh i guess is because I'm a writer, but it made me wonder if they were trying to hint at something. That Catherine was hiding something or that she genuinely didn't like society and people. She seemed to only ever feel empathy towards the little helper robot if you take his chip, and possibly Imogen, if you count her "she was my-... she was nice to me" comment. Even later she seems pretty uncaring about her eventual fate (to avoid spoilers). I dunno. It made me wonder how such a funny, sarcastic, interesting person could ever be described as she was unless there was something deeper going on...
      Or, you know, just bad writing. Lol. Say she's one way but show another.

    • @minapazderak5867
      @minapazderak5867 4 роки тому +4

      @Bleh yeah, that's why I felt like something else was going on because the writing is impeccable otherwise. It'd be really weird if just her character had this huge inconsistency? But man. I love this game.

      To add on to that, I thought of it as two different lives. Like if both versions of you lived in different places, would you stay the same, or become different people? The Catherine that was described was shy and "creepy" and didn't seem like she had friends, except possibly Reed because she was nice to her. But the other version of Catherine was more assertive and less empathetic than her original, she's had different experiences than the original Catherine thus making her a different version of what she once was/what she could have been.

    The story and concept behind this game is actually really terrifying, and I was so tense the whole time! My brother is really into this sort of stuff, and he's writing a book about people's phones taking parts of people's personality, appearance, guilts, fears, and so on, and then the phones have like a digital copy of their owner. It's like set in the apocalypse kind of setting after the earth has gone to crap, and a bunch of scientists have a lab underground, and they're working to make digital copies of people from their phones, but the copies are just brainless images with no morals or social skills, and they end up going rogue and killing the scientists. I find these kinds of stories to be interesting!

    3:57 VERY scary. I mentioned this game to my husband. We were talking about the idea of only being the scan left and he seemed to get it easily... not that he agrees. Like it was only logical so that you could be the “real” person... the scan. For me... I was totally confused. There’s TWO of you after a scan. It’s still killing yourself. So now there’s two of you. To me it’s two separate consciousness with two very real rights to life. This game is just so thought provoking. You could think and talk about it for hours. Like... are computer programs alive then? At what point is a program alive? So odd and creepy.

      I think of it more like a sibling or a clone. I wouldn't willingly end myself to see if I would transfer over to a clone somehow. I can understand how people can think that, but I also don't think it's perfectly sound. It's like taking a branch off a tree, and planting it somewhere else so it also grows into a tree. :> Both are still trees, and ending the first one won't somehow make the second one more real.

      Reminds me of a few episodes from Black Mirror- the Christmas one (I don't remember the title) and a couple others. One of the scene includes a digital software copy of someone being uploaded to a device. The copy is interrogated for information and psychologically tortured into compliance by speeding up the time within the device while real time is just ongoing. The digital conscious spends her (its?) time in solitude for months. The interrogator left it on for a moment and came back to the device to see the copy having already experienced large amounts of time- alone, nothing to do in a quiet empty space, and in great distress that borders on losing sanity. The copy finally gives in and does what it's (or she?) ordered.

    That's the thing I love about SOMA. It forces you to ask yourself really uncomfortable questions about existence, consciousness, and being Human.
    Also it makes the interactions with brain-scans very "Human", you feel guilt, compassion, pity for them. But the actual human beings you encounters are all husks, to be used. It really puts the themes on the game into perspective..

  • @andrewtetz2198
    @andrewtetz2198 4 роки тому +4

    I wouldn’t necessarily call Simon a robot zombie, the structure gel is likely heavily infused with the body which based on some observations seems to preserve in some capacity soft tissues, Simon would probably be more accurately described as a cyborg, however if his power source were to run out, his structure gel would go inert or at least become inactive and perhaps decomposition would truly set in as a result.
    I love this series Gab, I can’t wait to see if you make the same choice most players do later in the game, thanks for the awesome content.

    The sense that you get scared more as you get older might have to do with several things. Gab pointed out empathy, and that's a great facet of story-driven games. With our experiences (I'm also 30), we get to relate with people in these settings as bizarre as they would be. These characters around the same age as us, or the fact that we relate to the work they did or the stuff they verbalize, we put ourselves in their shoes at the moment.
    A moment later, chat mentioned mortality. As you get past a certain age, you accept that death is imminent and not a far-off thing. We've become aware that life is a fragile concept that could be extinguished in a moment's notice. Younger generations, at least as generalized as can be, tend to disregard mortality and think themselves as nigh-invincible.
    Another point would be that the writing in recent games have stepped up in a way that makes the players feel unsettled despite the outlandish setting. The danger of the unknown, the sense that you're on your own with nothing but danger as a presence. We know a lot more and have all these concepts in our minds running alongside the fact that a man made out of gel is walking around grabbing a robot-zombie.
    - Yes, hello. I am not qualified to make these suppositions but I like writing.

    • @leeelahglitz47
      @leeelahglitz47 4 роки тому +2

      I agree! Although I'm only 18, I definitely appreciate life for all that it is, and I'm well aware it can be whipped away from us within a split second, which is why I try to make the most of everyday! I'm definitely aware that death is inevitable, but it probably becomes a much more intense feeling in adulthood, which admittedly, I wouldn't understand quite so much. I certainly don't consider myself 'invincible' but I understand where you're coming from.😂 With all these teens on TikTok, and other people thinking that they're superior to others.
      I definitely connected with the characters in the sense of being alone, with danger and doom being the only presence looming around you. As someone who has dealt with loss, severe depression, and some very horrible experiences for my age; I definitely felt empathy for the characters. I found this whole game and the concept to be very unsettling and terrifying! I felt uneasy the whole time. But you made some brilliant points!

    Regarding the voices you heard while next to the people preserved in the WAU, I read that since Simon and all those people are connected by the WAU, and since they're "alive" but not conscious, they're dreaming and when you're near them, the WAU connection enables you to hear their dreams. Someone datamined the audio files from the dreams so you can hear them clearer, they're floating around UA-cam if you're curious. But it's morbid in a way, these poor people being kept on life support by the WAU forever, unable to truly live or die but stuck in a series of dream sequences.

    i loved figuring out what happened to lots of the people whose voices we heard throughout the game. like the guy you found outside omicron who was yelling and then took off his own helmet was the happy-go-bubbly guy that worked the intercoms and i remember being shocked the first time i saw that. the whole thing about brandon wan. carl and amy at the first site and finding all their things and amy's drawings of the marine life and chatter with carl or her husband's audio log that took place right before the comet. the next part of the story also has some cool character stuff to find. i think it's really cool that we never see these characters and most dont actually do anything for simon's story at all but they still feel so involved

      Maybe the WAU got in the ARK program and we can play as the Simon or Catherine scan trying to rid the ARK of the WAU.

      Frictional Games said after Soma that they would work on two titles simultaneously - one lovecraftian game for the fans of Amnesia ( = Rebirth), and one in the sci-fi vein of Soma. So keep your eyes out for new announcements!

      @@tidalboxer Well, it could be. The game hints that there may have been other facilities out there. You are on _Pathos TWO_ after all. That suggests there may be at least one more facility out there somewhere, possibly with a different set of problems that do not involve its WAU. So maybe the sequel (if there ever is one) will deal with that. Then again, Frictional could surprise us with something entirely different. After all, "in the sci-fi vein of SOMA" is a broad category.

    Aker's was found in his diving suit having consumed a high about of the same gel stuff that was used to bind Read's corpse to the suit before Simon's scan was put in. It sounds like they found Aker's before the process was complete though and he was still alive so the gel mutated him into that zombie thing wandering the halls, have I understood that right?

    The WAU made everyone by uploading the stored scans, including Simon and Cath. It just forced the chip inside Reed's skull, filled the body with some structure gel and uploaded Simon there. Everybody else is just robots, except Simon and Catherine (who is basically an AI assistant for the omnitool, replacing the built-in Jane)

    So odds are there is already a scan of Catherine on the ark, so if our version of Catherine scans herself onto the ark too she'll technically have a twin (technically not completely identical because they had different journeys to the end). I suppose if anyone is mentally able to handle having a sudden digital twin it would probably be Catherine; she'd probably love having someone who understands her so well. XD

    It’s fitting to hear you talk about Simon’s nonchalance regarding his situation. I had the same reaction to some of the flippancy during Spirit Hunter: NG.
    Akira Kijima would quip sarcastically at your character and I’d be like:
    “Um...... Missing sister...? Anyone...? Bueller...?”
    Just a minor pet peeve of mine. Which reminds me that I *STILL* haven’t watched Death Mark!
    PS: I do realize how flippant *my own* comment is!

    1:39:17 So Akers blinded himself and "clogged up his insides with structure gel", combined with the fact that it looked like someone had basically exploded in the chair in the room she was just in.
    Maybe she comments about it later, but as soon as I read this I was like "Blind monster dude is Akers!" and I'm surprised Gab didn't make that connection. But then again she has played this before and might know something I don't at this point. 🤷‍♂
    Edit: Okay, she mentioned it with a "Bye, Akers!" when escaping in the elevator. I guess I just missed when she made the connection. 😅 I am watching this as I'm down with the C after all, and the brain-fog is real.. 😒

    I have sympathies for Catherine.
    Appears that she is the only one around that understand that the REAL issue is not saving individual souls from death, but saving Mankind as a whole. That doesn't matter if the individual minds that will reside in the ARK are or not the people that was once scanned, as long they are minimaly human, not only as persons but as a colective entity too.

    If you want to get upper body strength in the quickest and easiest way possible, do push-ups, every single day. No skipping a day.
    Do 3 sets of X amount of push-ups every single day. (X being the amount you can do in a set, even if it that number goes down after each set)
    Even if you have to start with "lAdY" push-ups, (knees on ground), keep doing every set until you can't hold yourself up anymore with your upper body.
    Push-ups are more intuitive than pull-ups for beginners because if you can't do a pull-up, than you can't do the exercise. Push-ups are more versatile because you can adjust reps and even form depending on your strength.
    This is quick and easy because it will take less than 10 minutes of your day, every day, and you WILL see progress after 6-8 weeks if you do it every single day *without* skipping.
    If you're having a hard time seeing results now, it's because your exercise is too sporadic. (But good on you for doing it! Anything is better than nothing!)
    Love your videos!
