    I lolled at: The sink controller, the heater being on maximum (air con is on maximum here in Aus), and the yellow button for the bowl operation :D

    @peterahjorter There are two engines! The front controls hydraulics as well so sometimes you want full hydraulic power but less pushing power hence the need to control them independantly. Also in corners the back will push the front around if left at full throttle.

    I used to drive these in the 70`s, before electronics got involved. we called the bowl the box. Thats in the UK, of course.

    @specialks1953 It's easier to not think about what the controls do, just what you want the machine to do. I had someone ask me which joystick in the excavator did what and it took me a good 2 minutes to figure it out and tell them.

    It can be called a can or a bowl, people always call different parts of different machines different things. Its even as bad as calling a whole machine by a different name like people referring to a skid steer only as a bobcat or in the uk a backhoe can commonly be called a jcb because theyre popular manufacturer names. Or like calling the arm on an excavator an arm or a croup. Doesnt mean that somebody who uses a different word isnt an operator in my opinion its the exact opposite.

    The horn is the most important bit on that scraper as I'm guessing thats what you use to summon the Dozer to give you a push!

    A Lighthearted look at the beast! Don't be so upset people. I liked his presentation! a few errors who cares! I like the single stick! The 3 levers and the Bail arm lever were what I had to use for decades! Do they still have the button for setting the RPMs the same as others pushing/pulling you?I suppose they would have to as transmission problems could result.
    My favourite was the 639D Twin engine elevator was the best! But still preferred sitting on a digger loading trucks!

    It's just a counter. If you're paid by the load or the cubic yard (or cubic meter) instead of the hour, it's important to keep track of how many loads you've hauled.

    The scraper is a tricky bugger to operate, I had a trial run in a terex and I didnt get enough time to get used to the controls, kinda tricky trying to drive and watch whats going on at the back at the same time!

  • @UAL012
    @UAL012 13 років тому

    @25mfd The answers depend on the type of soil you're working in, size of the scrapers, and the operators of both types of machines. In a scraper the size of a 657, they're designed for moving a LOT of dirt and a grenerally used for rough cutting. They'll usually cut out the dirt to within 5 tenths (6 inches or half a foot) before other machines take over.

    when you turn the scraper on a 90 degree angle you only want the front motor engaged, as the back motor will push you forwards instead of pivoting on the rear wheel

  • @UAL012
    @UAL012 13 років тому

    @25mfd These scrapers aren't capable of automatically setting up to make cuts at the same depth. It takes a while to develop a good eye for making cuts and fills. About 90% of scraper operation is by feel. I've got a LOT of hours and years in one and it's a matter of getting used to the machine and how it runs.

    @robdog121523 These guys are double shifting eleven and a half hours a day and have been working in brutal conditions for the last month straight. Normally most stuff is kept nice and clean on my site but when it's painful to even just drag yourself to work every day because you are so worn out (big push before the end of the year shut down) things get a little run down.

  • @25mfd

    @vantagetes After you make a pass, how do you get back to the EXACT cutting depth of the previous cut?
    Do these machines have some way of locking in a cutting depth so you make the same cut at the same cutting depth EVERYTIME?
    If they don't have this, i would imagine it would take a good eye to set the bowl at the same cutting depth every time. And be correct.

  • @thesportbikeman
    @thesportbikeman 11 років тому

    honestly i have seen proof that this guy knows his stuff and it is called a bowl on a scraper tractor like that one.

  • @25mfd
    @25mfd 13 років тому

    @UAL012 That's pretty much what i thought. Answer this...If you have an area where you need to make a substantial cut of say 5 feet or more, after a few passes, how do you check to make sure you haven't overcut the area?
    Grade stakes give you the initial depth to cut to but can they be used as a guide to determine how close you are getting to grade?

  • @25mfd
    @25mfd 13 років тому

    @UAL012 I recently watched a vid of the gomaco 9500 trimmer. I thought that was what the motor grader was for? Is the subgrade rolled after the trimmer is finished or is it ready for the next phase. (ie curbs and concrete/asphalt paving)

    Maybe just to see how they have changed over the years,i have been frozen in winter and boiling in summer..no heaters or air con ( or decent cabs) for many many years,i retired a few years ago after 46 years of 12 hour shifts..enough is enough..my last machine a new D9R did have air con tho',brilliant...i also drove my name CATDW21 many years ago too..no auto gearbox or hydraulics then...clutch/ winch and a big gearstick + a donkey engine to start..the good old days,,no thanks..lol

    An engine brake works by reducing the strokes of the pistons but how does a transmission brake work?

  • @25mfd
    @25mfd 13 років тому

    @UAL012 Another question...Scrapers are used in the rough grade phase but how close are you looking to get to grade when using scrapers? What are the typical tolerances that you would want to get to?
    Also, how much can one expect of the grader operator to fix a botched rough grading phase? ie, an over filled or underfilled area.
