    Most of the "E-bike" deliverers in my town have modified them into unlicensed mopeds. They never pedal, while travelling at a speed that's probably faster than the where pedal assist should be disabled, but certainly a lot faster than the permitted throttle speed. It's refreshing to see someone peddling and generally respecting the rules of the road.

    I got Fiido D4s ebike for 620£ over 6months ago, been doing delieveries with it quite a lot in London and it made such a big difference, you’ll make much more others in the busy time, 4000 miles on the clock and zero issuses with the bike just 2 flats. Highly recommend

    I would of thought the high end mid-drive ebikes were the worst option for a courier bike, the motor works through the chain so chain and cassette wear much faster and those motors are typically less reliable but have better hill climbing performance. They will break chains fairly frequently. You seem to be quite fit so the greater reliability and extended drivetrain life would benefit you and I'm sure you would still cope with hills with a hub motor. The bike you have could be easily converted to an ebike I suspect. You say its a Giant Escape but not sure which model but a simple front wheel hub conversion could be ideal and it would also allow you to convert back to a regular bike pretty easily if you wanted to. Yose power do some good ebike kits that are shipped from the UK for just under £400 including battery. I think the average power of a human cyclist varies from about 20-50Nm depending on age and fitness, a hub motor from yose is about 45Nm but a high performance mid-drive motor is closer to a 100Nm but I feel like 45Nm would be absolutely fine for you based on your cycling performance with a standard bike. Mechanically hub motors are very simple so they tend to be a lot more reliable than mid-drive those often have a lot of cogs and sometimes belts internally and are based around a much smaller high rpm motor close to the bottom bracket. I think of mid-drive as like a BMW car, more power, less reliability and always more money being spent where as a hub motor is more like a Toyota Corolla, cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, maybe a bit boring. Halfords were doing free ebike test rides, not sure if they still are but might be worth giving one a try and if you like it possibly buy a kit for your current bike.

    • @PinderProductions
      @PinderProductions  2 роки тому

      Ok thanks for clarifying the reliability of hub motors versus mid-drives. So more reliability for hubs versus speed but increased wear to chain with the mid-drive.
      Conversion kits can be good, and I see a few people around using them. Sometimes the quality of the batteries on the market is worry for me but assuming they are a reputable manufacturer then sounds like a decent option.

    • @bonzobanana1
      @bonzobanana1 2 роки тому

      @@PinderProductions Not much speed difference between them because of the 15.5mph cap. I guess hub motors accelerate a bit quicker typically but they also consume a bit more power too. People like mid-drive because of the smooth power delivery due to the torque sensor most mid-drives have where as its rarer with hub motors. However overall for its reliability, cheaper entry price, less risk of theft and reduced drivetrain wear I think hub motors are the best option for the gig economy couriers.
      I do think batteries are typically a little safer with the expensive mid-drive bikes but Bosch batteries for example are full of glue and the BMS will self-brick if you don't charge the battery for a very long time. It's a very proprietary product that requires special digital handshaking with the controller. They do this so they exclude third party batteries etc so they make more money. It can be annoying though so despite their high price the more expensive ebikes full of proprietary tech are often the first to be scrapped. It just becomes too expensive to keep them on the road if you start having motor or battery problems. Then because the frame is dedicated to the motor if you damage the frame, a new frame could be thousands of pounds. They can be money pits. Anyway I think you should try a cheap hub based ebike to see what you think, you may be happy with it and it might increase your productivity 10% or so and quickly pay for itself.

    Swapping to an ebike could also make you ever lazier and you could lose much if the fitness you've built up. This is the main reason I stick to manual but like you I'm only part time.
    Maybe as a full time job it would be worth going to ebike. I couldn't imagine doing say 8 hours a day 6 days a week on a manual bike; how long could that be sustained?

    • @PinderProductions
      @PinderProductions  2 роки тому

      Yes it's good to try and keep the fitness level up without the electric motor. I think 8 hours a day would be a struggle on a manual bike considering how many miles you might do each day.

    Unless you're doing this full time, stick with a regular bicycle. I did a simple analysis and it would take over 400 deliveries to pay off a 2,000 WAU bike if each order was 5 lb! It's not likely you're going to make 5.00 per order so break even point might be closer to 500 deliveries! Since you are part time, this could take 4 or 5 months of hard work just to pay for the bike before you even make any money.
    Everyone that I know who has an electric bike is constantly having them repaired. Damaged batteries, controllers, spokes, motors and the list goes on. The battery will need to be replace each year if you have only one and you're cycling through it. When it rains on an electric bike, it pours as water can destroy the electronics.
    I also watch Vio and he makes less money than you! He's using a 2K WAU bike!

    I’m at Ebike too, but to be honest, motorcycle is the best! They just have to make 2 deliveries per hour, and the people on Ebike have to do at least 3/4 deliveries per hour, and still they make much more money than us..

      @@PinderProductions Motorcycles can't be ridden through parks or through alleyways, so in that regard, a bike would be somewhat faster, since you can cut out a load of the distance by taking detours that you can't take on a motorcycle.
      Another thing that could be problematic for an ebike, is the charge time. If your ebike takes 5-6 hours to fully charge, you have to wait most of that time if you want to spend as much time as possible when out doing deliveries. This is even more of a problem for the cheaper ebikes that have shorter range.

You know the worst thing I've seen is Christmas tree lights, they're even higher in EMF than your standard home internet router.
