- We took liz to the park for the second time today 1/6/12. He was a little nervous at first but then started exploring. :) Starts begging for attention at 0:25.

It always amazes me how gentle these giant, intimidating lizards can be when they're raised properly.
They definitely require patience. Tegus are one of the most intelligent lizards in the world, so it can sometimes be like working with a human toddler.

well they're not meant to be pets. they're raised "properly" when they're in the wild

I've had a few of these in my pet shop and they're really quite nice as pets with some training. This one looks very well fed. I just returned from the Tucson reptile show and there were several tegu lizards for sale, one just short of five feet,

Sharon Azar actually tegus don't really like high areas the best thing to do is hold on by your chest so they can feel your heartbeat so it calms it down

My brother had one when we were younger, we had to get rid of him because he kept trying to bite us. One scary moment of my life, I will never forget him.

A lot of people are commenting about cuddling or hugging or petting the tegu, which is fine, you just love the animal a lot, but, you should all probably know that lizards don't take comfort from direct physical contact the way mammals do.
The lizard sees the human as a safe place to be when in an unusual and scary situation, so it stuck to what was safe. It wasn't begging to be picked up and cuddled, Reptiles don't really care about that.
It's always important to remember that animals don't all behave the same- and that's more than just having different temperaments. Some animals might not even experience the same emotions we do, and visa versa. Cuddling with the Tegu would likely be a lot of fun for a human, but probably not that interesting to the lizard itself.
Quit trying to sound like "the Voice of Reason". He wanted to be picked up because he was apprehensive of his surroundings. They also enjoy having their necks rubbed or, when cold, warmth from our bodies. Your description of its thought process is no different than that of a human baby, anyway.

I agree food is the primary driving force in human reptile interaction but its been shown that large monitor lizards have a much higher intelligence in comparison to the average reptile. You will find with extended interaction that large monitors recognize their owners not only as a source of food but as part of their social group and a source of physical pleasure from touching and rubbing them. None of this should seem odd as large monitors have shown to have many behavioral traits more often applied to large birds that are kept as pets such as parrots than other pet reptiles such as snakes. I look at them more like a half way point behaviorally between reptiles and birds leaning more towards bird like.
Large monitor lizards are social animals. Literally living in groups in the wild. Saying that they only care about food is as ignorant as someone saying that they bond through physical contact.

Reptiles seem to want attention, but need time to trust humans before trusting. I must be a reptile myself. With the care of a Russian Tortoise for 5 years, he follows us around the house and is afraid to be alone. Tortoises do not like to be picked up, except for Tommy who wants reassurance from time to time that all is OK. Obviously, fear is built heavily into their DNA. During times of a hail storm & a minor earth quake, he clung to us like a leech.

You can hand tie them easily with some soft nylon rope or even parachute cord. There's plenty of tutorials on making a simple harness 😊👍

+Dodo No worse than a dog bite. Food isn't too bad, I make sausage links for mine out of ground chicken thighs and fruits and veggies. make them in bulk and freeze.

Certain people are alright to have these as their first reptile. I have ball pythons so they aren't exactly my first reptile. However, I did do a lot of research on what their environment is supposed to be. As long as someone is smart and diligent enough they shouldn't have much issue. Also, don't get your advice from pet stores on how to take care of them, find actual owners to get your info from.

🇮🇩 My first guess (which I'm hoping that I got it right) from looking at its profile that's a male and several seconds later "Uhm, you know what? Let me see the description after I guessed it, it probably said male/female or maybe nothing at all". And then "Yes! OMG! I got it right again! My senses/my sight is right yet again!" 😆
Mostly I got it right whenever I see animals or mammals profile if it's young, old, male or female. But obviously it isn't 100% though, haha!
You should've profiled it as obese. I'm a decade late but that Tegu is at a very unhealthy weight, which is common for big lizards because of how aggressively they feed, sorta like the more ravenous breeds of dogs like retrievers. The tegu has probably passed by now, but I'm willing to say the health complications it had upon death were most likely linked to weight.

Argentine black and white. Gold or Columbians (same thing) are not nearly as docile and not usually good first tegu pets.
