Great video. We absolutely need better depictions of black witches in cinema. Early portrayals of black witches were rooted in fear. Same reason our spiritual traditions were stripped from us during the slave trade. I, like many others, have chosen to take back some of those traditions. I enjoyed Mazelle Batiste Delacroix (Debbie Morgan) in Eve's Bayou. While her life was tragic, she was strong and had great confidence in her intuition and her beliefs. Thanks BFTV for this thought provoking topic.

Great topic! I watched the entire video and you did an awesome job. Its so interesting how zombies went from a puppeteered individual only a vodoo priest/ess could create to a Hollywood monster of the living dead. My favorite is Marie Laveau. I was intrigued by the idea of two historical figures, Laveau and Madame LaLaurie, knowing eachother being that they lived in New Orleans in the same time period. I liked the idea of Laveau seeking revenge on behalf of enslaved people that LaLaurie horrifically murdered. Still, I can understand criticism for Laveau being protrayed as Black savior, or magical Negro, for how far writers took the story with the coven and everything. Nonetheless, Angela Bassett did the thing! I think the movie Spell with Loretta Devine and Omari Hardwick would be a great addition to your analysis. It's a thriller examining how practitioners of the spiritual arts can also be charlatans.

I know it was very brief but in Lovecraft Country one of the characters seems help from a black witch to dispell the ghosts from her house and her protection still works later on when the white witch tries to enter her house.

Thank you for this video!!! It was definitely needed for those that don't have a damn clue! I definitely want to watch Wanga and Chloe is calling you. Eve's Bayou came out when I still was a kid and loved it. Just watched it the other day... Eve's Auntie always hit home for me when she told the story of her lovers. To be able to see things in other people and be able to help and save lives to being blind to your own and certain people that come into it. Hits deep!!!

As a “raised seventh day Adventist” I’ve always wanted to move to Louisiana especially New Orleans. It’s so beautiful in the deep woods and the history but being the stigma that comes from the city I was always told to stay away from it bc of the “evil history”🙄 aka as whatever isn’t Christian

im from new orleans and some new orleans people do use voodoo as a way to harm people most of they just trying to make a quick buck and they dont even be pratitioners. and they have a lot of voodoo shop runs by white people that you dont support because a white person cant work with voodoo or hoodoo but they do sell mess up stuff
      and put people in danger

Bonjoir manbo asogwe here! This video is a great start in the process of nature and ancestry that we as brown women need to start developing! We are so amazing if only we can remember this world wouldn't be here if it wasn't for a Melanin Goddess!! Just remember you changed the world when you were born. Nobody else's frequency was here before you or me! If we love ourselves the right way we won't have an issue with the way our lovers do us or how some of us treat our family.

Love this type of content! Debbi Morgan also played the Seer on charmed and although she worked for the Source, they did give her character some range! And you probably use the term witch for only women but Donal Faison and Alimi Ballard both played witches on Sabrina the Teenage Witch and I liked the representation of both of them on that show. Yusuf Gatewood was on the originals as well, which ties into the new orleans theme of this video, unfortunately the white savior trope was prevalent in this role, but this was lightly addressed as well.

Love what you did here! But I must note… Its a lot of confusion & misinformation going on.
As a descendant of Southern rootworkers and as a practitioner myself, we’ve got to do more to educate ourselves on our ancestral/spiritual technologies and practices; esp if you didn’t grow up being exposed to it. Information on Hoodoo itself (valid information that is) is not the easiest to come by via the internet; partially due to its sacredness and the other due to years of YT folks running with their own narrative and feeding us lies about our own magic. Not to mention the countless amounts of misinformation and erasure that has happened. I’d recommend those that are curious to start with old books and literature (Zora Neal Hurston books) . Or even better… go talk to your elders, they know the REAL.
