In 2021 World Championships Loh Kean Yew had advantages. Kento Momota, seeded 1, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting seeded 5 and Jonatan Christie seeded 7 all withdrew. He was also unseeded , he was a relative unknown, and probably had the best mindset of 'I have nothing too lose but something to prove'. He certainly surprised Victor Axelesen, seeded 2 in R1 winning 14-21, 21-9, 21-6. For the Olympics, Loh Kean Yew has to get back to that mindset of anticipating shots and committing himself forward in the front court with the right footwork and not to delay his shots for the sake of deception.
LKY had to play against Axelsen, Antonsen, and Prannoy to win that 2021 World Championship, so I say his win isn't just lucky, he totally deserves it. Even if Momota, Ginting, and Jonatan were there, I say LKY would still win it. Momota was post accident Momota, and neither Ginting nor Jonatan has ever medalled in World Championship. At that time, LKY played way above his normal level, a level that he couldn't replicate since. As for what had changed, first is his coach. He didn't have the same coach, Mulyo Handoyo. While LKY had emphasized multiple times that his current coach is good, I beg to differ. After winning the World Championship, LKY often plays as if he has no game plan. Second is the lack of training partners. During 2021, he was invited to train with Axelsen in Dubai. Having proper training partners can make a huge difference. Unfortunately for him, there is no strong second man single in Singapore.
I hope he will make a comeback in this prestigious tournament. He is quick, energetic and passionate. He just needs a little more consistence and calmness. a good strategy as well.
I actually disagree - LKY's super speed is not really a "sustainable" way of playing badminton. No one can keep playing consistantly like that - it's against human nature. If he can manage to "activate" that kind of speed in the 2nd half of each game, he might be more competitave in the Paris Olympics.
his current style is good for the first game, to get a flow going. He could play his faster style in the 2nd(and 3rd, if needed) games to get a needed edge against his opponent
current meta for singles is long rally. just look att LZJ, he was explosive before but has slowed down recently under his new coach. it's just not a sustainable play style for a fully packed BWF tournaments that are all cramped up together within a few months. first of all, of course it's exhaustion and burning out. secondly, huge risk of injury playing at top speed. and thirdly, u gonna peak at ard age 26/27 and ur performance gonna drop sharply after that when ur speed decreases with old age. i feel ginting is the only exception who excels with this play style but that's because he has a good smash to complement his speed. he is also falling off the chart. players, if they do not adapt to the long rally play style, will have their career shortened. towards the end of LD's career, he slowed down so much, he rarely even full smash any more.
loh kean yew is 27 now, in his prime, but way older than he was before. In 21" world champs, he could afford to play aggressively and gamble the net because he was so agile and speedy. Now he is forced to change into a more passive playstyle, resulting in his lack of success. However, a change in playstyle can also lead to success, it just depends on how much loh kean yew wants it. Subbed btw, good vid
he is currently not in the top 8 players in the world, fighting to be the top 12. he need to be as deadly as he is when he won the world championship. he need to be able to win in smashes like he did in the championship. Agreed, he is not winning in-front of the net as often now a days. he is not taking risk as much as he is when he was unknown player. i hope he will put the weight off himself and play and play and not afraid to loose a point. how often singapore player can play with world class player. cherish every opportunity and play for every point.
LZJ himself sees himself and LKY as the same type of players, heavily reliant on their form on the day. He said both of them can beat everyone when they are playing well, but they can also lose to just about anyone when they're not. LZJ seemed to be playing himself into form though, in contrast to LKY.
looking at the video i thought this channel would have hundreds of thousands of subscribers but it looks like you started recently so i see that happening soon. imo you should post about how to improve in badminton to help others if yall are willing
Subscribing!!!! Love your analysis!!! Please keep uploading and not go on hiatus!!!!! Would love to see analysis of womens singles players too!!!! (The gold medalist is still anyone's game considering An seyoung's injury, so it'd be so great to see an analysis) also when the group brackets start in the olympics, womens doubles bracket A is a group of death
The game style also depends on the conditions, in Spain there were quite fast so he could capitalise on the things you mention. It won’t be sustainable where the case is otherwise
LKY's speed and net play, footwork are his advantages. But, we are talking about Olympics, where all players are best prepared for it. The pressure is tremendous. So mentally relax and be able to execute his advantages in a relax manner and be able to win most games in 2 straight sets will be the key. Being the under dog, can he execute that? well, lets see.
Yes ! That’s lky mistakes he changed his play after world championship. Think he is trying to emulate the GOAT LD play but fell short on timing and sharpness.. but recently I saw his games has big improvement and this change style would sustain him for few more years..
Loh kean yew won against Li Shi Feng i see that he doesn't go aggressive but more control, then he goes to aggressive his shot placements are more Accurate his shot selection was good he adjusted things on his strongest Weapons and his defense was very good
His play style in 2021 was stamina demanding. And if the opponents could lift high or hit cross court. They would break his rhythm as he run fast forward.
The 2021 world chmps style cannot be maintained for more than 2-3 tournaments. It is possible he has kept it in the locker.Maybe take it out in a big tourney like olympics.Though everyone wd have studied his game extensively this time around.
The operative word is IF. LKY has huge potential but for me it’s extremely unlikely to even get on the podium. Axelsen is hungry but it’s a real open field and he’s been beaten recently by numerous different players…
i think the main reason for his loss is that he makes so much mistakes, as you can see in recent championship and most significant the Singapore open where he play in his home town the firs set of his match between him and Lu Guang Zu is how he always plays in recent tournament and the latter 2 set is quite close to what he was in 2021 and later on he lost in his own hometown.
I don't think it is possible for him to use that playstyle anymore. After that miracle run, his style will be researched and learned. Once the opponents know his tactics, that gambling playstyle will be easier to counter. I just don't think it is possible to use that playstyle now that everyone is aware of it. Take All England's Lee Zii Jia for example. He used to dominate opponents with sheer power. After that run, he could no longer use that playstyle because opponents would play flatter shots or net shots rather than lifting. That's also why he improved his skills at the net so much; now he can follow the opponent's rhythm while still having the ability to finish the rally with his smash.
He should improve his corr strength and make his footwork solid if he wants to play control. Control players never block or net tightly but just let the shuttle cross the net without it floating, control players should generally play more pushes and more far nets to prevent opponent from initiating spin. make use of deceptions or double strokes. And most importantly, only smash when you have a chance. Thats a control player. Control players have a lower chance of injury compared to attackers. Glad he changed he could potentially outlast the others. Look at chen long, lin dan and lee chong wei. They are absolutely stunning controllers and they have lasted for decades seldom getting injuries except for lcw. they only smash when theres a chance or smash when the opponent is unbalanced and deceived. Their footwork is incredibly solid, almost absolutely no errors. lee chong wei and lin dan uses of deception and double strokes force their opponents to lift or just to break their rhythm to take control over the rally.
Good assessment however I beg to differ with the word "gambled". He was an outsider with no expectations but this young lad was very determined. He is never the same player dubbed the fastest. He doesn't have the attack and aggression he was known for. Instead he slows his game and plays lots of rallies which wasn't his strength at all, resulting in too many unforced errors. Wish him all the best but it will take some solid display to make it far...
Agree with your statement at the beginning, he is unlikely to return to his peak form. Mainly because he was heavily relying on speed which peaks during early adulthood and lasts on average for 2 years at the professional level for more players, if you don't have additional arsenal weapons you won't have longevity in supremacy, i.e. power, efficient footwork. The other person I can think of is Ginting relying on speed to compensate for his height. LKY net play is also not as impressive. Every other player has gambled in the same manner. If we are talking about good net cross court, you could literally name any other top players, heck just watch doubles players for REAL impressive net play.
Looking back to how he played in 2021 and how much his opponents progressed and fall after, it seems difficult to give any certain call for strategy that suits him. It certainly helpful to know how and with whom heve been sparring consistently. Olympic is also a crazy mixed bag. So many surprises. Being a backseater myself, with a good memory of every match from the last two decades, I think the only way he could win the olympic is by beating everyone he faced. Sorry if i wasted your time reading that xD.
LKY should follow Axelson's style of serving the shutter...he takes so long to serve and frustrates his opponent by swaying the shuttercock. Take a good look at Axelson's style of serving and you will know...how could the empire allow service like that.
I am afraid that without high standard of sparring partners in Singapore, it will be difficult. I predict he will be eliminated in the final 16. His speed is gone, unforced errors is up and his stamina is lacking if a match goes to the rubber. He will fall against fast players.
he don't have proper coach guide him, still use same tactic, i guess will eliminate at 1 or 2 round, badminton is not power play anymore, is use intelligence to play.
it's not that he is fast, it's just pointless for other players to play at this type of speed and sustain months of tournament. and also, he lacks a powerful/accurate smash to complement his speed. players realise that all they have to do is just play the long rally with him. using the 2021 world championship as an example is so bad. he was playing 3rd/4th tier tournaments for the whole year while others were fighting out in the top ones. the year was ending and i believe most players were already burnt out or injured and that's why they wouldnt have gone all out in a tournament that gives no prize money. Lky is mentally weak and inconsistent too, evident by his need to celebrate every point that he wins, just look at his final olympics game against axelsen. u just dont see any top tier players doing that. his style of play is only gonna degenerate as he age and his speed decreases.

2021 LKY was among the fastest and the most explosive players I've ever seen in the court
Yes. You are so spot on! That's exactly what his coach should point out.

He seems to have lost the plot. No longer regularly playing to his strengths of speed / follow up and smash.
Also seems reluctant to challenge his opponent in net exchanges. Seldom manages to tap down.
I hope he will make a comeback in this prestigious tournament. He is quick, energetic and passionate. He just needs a little more consistence and calmness. a good strategy as well.

Totally agree! He is too passive and allows opponents to dictate play. With his speed he should make opponents work more.
Double stroke net lift is the counter for this type of player, it use to slow down the opponent, you can see on every Kento vs LZJ games
if LKY quits badminton, i'm sure he can go into fencing easily

Player to watch at the Olympic. He is in great form to beat China's No2LI. Looks he wil advance further to beat big named players.
Nice analysis but music is too loud
Thank you for your input, will keep this in mind for the future.
If Loh KY plays this way, he cannot win. Others had already thoroughly analysed these moves long ago.
Especially his patterned net play sequence, it's not varied enough.

Doyle Circles
very similar to how Ginting used to dominate with his speed and technique but now also falls to opponents pressure
Speedy is not sustainable play in badminton… that’s why Ginting is not winning more
