WOW!!! That is unacceptable. The Pearl Flexi folks should be panicking. Thanks for passing along that design flaw. It will be interesting to learn what you hear back. Thanks for the follow-up.
Great video Kevy, I know it’s not fun identifying a problem but it does help the people who wanted to buy the razor and the company has a opportunity to save their reputation. I tell my kids “a failure can be the best learning tool a person can have”.
One problem with lengthening the shank to the threads is you would not have a space for the return spring. You are correct that the shank should have a tighter tolerance. I just bought a "V12" and the issue is still present though less noticeable. I would say the threads have sloppy tolerances also which cause the adjustment dial to be canted in one direction. Which is why the problem is worse on certain settings. On the settings that look level in the video I would bet that you could see a noticeable difference when measuring the spacing on the other side. Different aggression setting when flipping the razor while shaving.
John James, agreed. "Out of Stock", those three words saved us roughly $96.(Shipping to the US apparently costs $27!) FYI, The Global Shave Club Fatguy also has some mechanical problems.....
Thanks for pointing that out kevy. I love the honesty in not being affaid to point out flaws and not just giving a good review on every piece of shaving gear to make companies happy. You posting this will no doubt speed up the process of this company making it right for the people that have the issue. That being said ...im sticking to my rex ..lol
Pearl is very good at customer complaints and service at least in India. I had an issue of head wobble in a SBF-11 I had purchased and when I pointed out to them they offered to replace it. Although I didn't want for free and paid so that the costs of the second razor were covered and they did not incur any loss. So in that way it's a very good company.
Great update Kevy, thanks for the info on this issue. Hopefully the issue gets resolved by the manufacturer. Interestingly a couple of days after seeing your initial video I then watched Ken Surfs first impression video of this razor and at one point he also noticed the issue of the bottom plate/ razor misalignment that you also was having issues with.
Hi Kevy. Thanks for putting up this video. I have this issue but it isn't as pro ounced as yours. A few guys I'm in contact with have also found this issue, so it seems quite common. Cris Madden from Another Cut Above, first mentioned it to me. I surmised that the adjustment dial had too much lateral movement, on mine. If you press your thumb on the side that is lowest, it'll even out again. But, no-one should pay £50 for a razor and have to manually fix it. Mine also (one shave in) seems to be more aggressive on one side.
Kevy, Thanks for pointing that out. A beautiful razor, but obviously an issue, where the razor should have never been released. Thanks for being honest, as I know some people may have wanted to order this razor. The best to you, Mrs. Kevy and Riley.
Thanks a lot for the update Kevy. You enlightened me, and if the Pearl company do not fix that problem I will never buy that razor. Thank you always for what you are doing, your passion is unbelievable about the traditional wet shaving. What can I say now? I am craving to use this morning my only adjustable razor my Progress 500 which a discovered it's a model from the 1955 (you told me that in the last video about your 500 Digress). A big Thanks to you and Mr. Matthew for this video. I own a Pearl Razor too, a 91d open comb, it gives me rough shaves sometimes. I will check if it has any issues. Thank You.
Good callout Kevy. I see some comments about the REX having the same problem. I can report that I do not have that problem at all with mine. Precisely made high quality razor with no issues.
Good afternoon Kevy! I did watch you use this razor and I remember you mentioning that the unevenness was an optical illusion. Let's just say, that big Willy blade broke the fragile Pearl! All joking aside, the manufacturer needs to redesign and test. Heck, it took Muhle 4 attempts with the Rocca. It took Rex a few runs to get the Ambassador to function as it should. I think this razor can be saved if Pearl would put in the effort. Good catch. I loved the detailed explanation about the tolerances by Matt. Thanks for the update.
Thanks for doing the video. I had the same problem with a cheap chinaman adjustable....as you increase gap it get crooked. I was told to press down a couple of times and sometimes this fixed the gap. I put it away and have never used it again. Of course someone said: you have 2 razors in one......a standard and a "slant". I'll take a pass w this one. Amazing how the old Gillette vintage adjustable razors still work just fine and new ones are flawed. Cheers......
Had similar problem with a Rex Ambassador XL, had to return it for an exchange and I am still waiting for it to arrive. Now I wonder if the cause was something similar in the tolerance of components.

I had the same problem with the Parker Variant, I was sent a new one and the second one was perfect, also this problem has happened with my Merkur Progress, a work around is setting it to the highest aggression and the compress the top cap and base plate together pushing down on the spring while tightening it up, this helps a bit, but the problem with the flexi is much worse as Matt pointed out, this is a big problem and needs to be fixed, they can’t sell it like this.
I’m interested in hearing if you’ve heard back from Pearl? One of the comment was that the person had a version 5 and it didn’t have the same problem, it has been fixed per him. Thanks

Kevy didn’t you know, it’s called the flexi for a reason. You can can use it as a slant through the mid settings. In all seriousness though it’s not great quality wise which is a shame as it’s a great looking razor. It’s good if Matt to point out what’s causing the issue though.
Kevy, have you seen, or even more importantly, have you shaved with the Pearl Flexi 3 that was supposed to fix this slanting blade problem? I checked Pearl's web site yesterday (April 8), and they say that version 3 is sold out and version 4 will be announced in April. In the meantime, it looks like a number of US shaving retailers did not carry the v. 3, after Pearl had problems with v.1 and 2. I hope Pearl has solved the problems, because the razor looks very good otherwise. But their credibility has really suffered. I'd be interested to hear from any of your subscribers who have gotten a v. 3. I'm also wondering why, if they solved the problem with v. 3, why are going to v. 4. Their announcement didn't mention any product differences.
You did think something was off at the time. So Obvious now when you go up to the highest settings. It’s sold out, so feel sorry for the people who have purchased it.
Not kidding around here but it looks like you could do a temporary fix with a small amount of duct tape (or other type of tape) wrapped around the part of the shaft that is too narrow.
Do you know what’s really funny about this. I had a Rex ambassador which did the exact same thing. I think it’s the design of the razor based on the gibbs. So strange. But honestly no matter what I did with the Rex i couldn’t fix it. The Pearl is literally the same thing with the same issue. How odd!!
Correct, the very first batch had a thread angle/alignment problem but were replaced. Matt changed the design to correct the problem. Mine is of the 2nd batch and has been perfect from day one. REX has a lifetime warranty!
@@kevyshaves4109 yeah I had it all fixed thankfully, it’s amazing that a slight error in manufacturing can such a dramatic effect on the finished product!

I can be glad that it was also sold out for me. I'm curious to what extent this will be fixed until the next batch in December or not. It is also interesting to hear that the Rex Ambassador is said to have the same problem. I'd better stay true to my Fatboy. lol
No issues with my Ambassador. I think I recall hearing about some sort of issue with the Ambassador when it first came out, but Razor Emporium pretty quickly fixed the issue.
So you got a normal razor AND a slant. How cool is that 😉 It's a copy... but still... It's not that cheap, isn't it? 😏 Thanks for the information, guess i will go for the not adjustable Envoy 😁
I heard someone bought one recently and they had the same problem. Shame, people are paying money for that. They said it was fixed and I've heard some are ok, but I've also heard some still has this issue. I guess you're taking a chance if you buy one. You might get one that's ok but also, you might not. Kevy didn’t you know, it’s called the flexi for a reason. You can can use it as a slant through the mid settings. In all seriousness though it’s not great quality wise which is a shame as it’s a great looking razor. It’s good if Matt to point out what’s causing the issue though.
Ha ha! Good point!
I've heard from some that the V3 still has the issues but not as bad as V1 and V2. Hopefully V4 will be ok. I only have v1 and V2. Kevy 👍
@@kevyshaves4109 Thanks, Kevy. I'll be watching for any updates. Well...I'd be watching your videos anyway.
It looks like the bottom plate is slightly warped.
I know of this on the Rex as well! 😳
A slant adjustable that’s a great razor! Irony on...this is the problem with the copycats. Better to grab the original...quality has a price.
You did think something was off at the time. So Obvious now when you go up to the highest settings. It’s sold out, so feel sorry for the people who have purchased it.
I hope all of the razors they've shipped out don't share this problem. Kevy
Don't feel sorry ☺, Only some pieces have got such problems, and we are replacing all of them ☺
@@kevyshaves4109 Obviously ☺
Not kidding around here but it looks like you could do a temporary fix with a small amount of duct tape (or other type of tape) wrapped around the part of the shaft that is too narrow.
Do you know what’s really funny about this. I had a Rex ambassador which did the exact same thing. I think it’s the design of the razor based on the gibbs. So strange. But honestly no matter what I did with the Rex i couldn’t fix it. The Pearl is literally the same thing with the same issue. How odd!!
Wow! I'm surprised to hear that Jonny. Did you get a replacement?
Correct, the very first batch had a thread angle/alignment problem but were replaced. Matt changed the design to correct the problem. Mine is of the 2nd batch and has been perfect from day one. REX has a lifetime warranty!
@@kevyshaves4109 yeah I had it all fixed thankfully, it’s amazing that a slight error in manufacturing can such a dramatic effect on the finished product!
@@terrym1065 yeah I had mine replaced which was fine. Just was very unexpected! I just though it was interesting that they had the same issue and they are basically the same razors.
@@jonnyg6820 Great to hear you got it fixed. Kevy 😀
Poor for a £50 razor - I hope they can sort it.
Has this issue been resolved?
I’m not sure. I think they’re on version 6 now. I would hope they would have it fixed after 6 attempts. Cheers. Kevy 😊
They ALL have that problem!!!
Kevy!
A shame for sure. Request a refund, and wait if you wish for Pearl to tighten up their QC and re-release it as it ought to be.
Tq sir explaining video
So you got a normal razor AND a slant. How cool is that 😉
It's a copy... but still... It's not that cheap, isn't it? 😏 Thanks for the information, guess i will go for the not adjustable Envoy 😁
The Problem is to expected at planing that razor. Pretty clear that that will happen. Unbelievable!!
Kevi is is it fixed or not? Please let me know
I heard someone bought one recently and they had the same problem. Shame, people are paying money for that. They said it was fixed and I've heard some are ok, but I've also heard some still has this issue. I guess you're taking a chance if you buy one. You might get one that's ok but also, you might not. Good luck. Kevy 🙂
@@kevyshaves4109 thanks 🙏 for advice I think you have a power to do video about company who cheated on people I believe you are not the person who do UA-cam video for profit like others UA-cam s 👍
Do you also have this issue in a Rex?
No.
No, the Rex is fine. Kevy 👍
You get what you pay for, true for razors as all things. Stick with the original manufacturer rather than cheap knock offs.
Aw geez! I'ts gonna be like 'JIM WILL FIX IT ' SHOW !!!
A bit wonky idn't. Good PSA there Kev
