This comment is for anybody whom is saying something negative about Taib Mahmud, As a Sarawakian, as much I can say that I dislike Taib Mahmoud because of his corruption scandals, but how many of you know that because of Taib Mahmud, we managed to prevent the fate that Sabah is in right now. I’ll tell you why that is that case, this is because Taib Mahmud actually had an agreement with Tun Dr Mahathir in which the federal government would not interfere in the internal affairs of Sarawak as long as the state under Taib Mahmud is ALWAYS under the Sarawak BN administration and is loyal to the federal government and became a permanent fixed deposit of BN and that the Malayan BN component parties like UMNO, MCA and MIC would not spread its wings and open branches in Sarawak. As much I would like to say that this had a negative effect in which Sarawak was in slow development and that Taib Mahmud would essentially become a strongman of Sarawak which he would embroiled in corruption scandals in which he had total control of his own timber empire, the absence of federal interference meant that Sarawak under Taib is able to keep most of its rights unlike Sabah such as having English as an official language along with BM, Sarawak has no official religion in the constitution and Taib has also essentially kept control of Sarawak's borders and not allowing illegal migrants into Sarawak unlike Sabah with many cases of PTI. All these factors then allowed for Taib's successor Adenan Satem to pave the way for the demand of more autonomy back to Sarawak and now continuing under the current CM Abang Johari.
pls do not rationalise. In exchange for the oil Taib was allowed to ransack the state for himself. He was NO LKY. He should have created Sarawak's own police force & army and told UMNO to fark off..
It vice versa. 22 years Taib Mahmud giving support to Tun M and Barisan National. In returns, Taib Mahmud secured Sarawak always be a fixed deposit to Barisan National and UMNO which is no difference with what happened to Sabah. Banned UMNO to enter Sarawak also a strategy because they know most Dayaks will not support UMNO like what happened in Sabah which Suluk, Bajau, Kadazan can join UMNO even they are not Malays.
