I think both is true, there are covers and there are tributes. A tribute e.g. is Nightwish - High Hopes.
I think people compare only to say that you did it awfully good, like, as good as the inventer himself.
Even as much as I hate to say it, some do covers and end up being way better whether they intend to or not. Dan Vasc has conquered both Donnie Osmond and Adele with his covers. I do not to listen to those originals much anymore.

Pretty much flawless, I guess a lot of people would be blindfolded listening to the original and this version (beside the woh-oh before the solo) would have a real hard time finding out which one is you and which one is the original.
