    Do you cowboy camp? Have you ever had any of these gear fails? Have you ever gotten incorrect guidance from a ranger?

    Good call not going down the snow to get water but you might try attaching a line to your bottle and tossing it in to collect water

      That would be a good idea. I would want to have a dedicated bottle or something to drop down on a string. My Ti pot has a bail handle on it which would work well. Though I wouldnt want to use that because of fear of it falling off and then having no way to melt snow or heat water. Something like a smart water bottle with the top cut off and some holes to run string thru would probably work well and be light weight. In the future if I expect these sort of conditions I may try that and see how it works. Thanks for watching! 🫡

    Excellent content and lessons here! If you didn’t already know, having water in your pot helps tremendously with the melting of snow.
    It took a while for me to get used to sleeping in a tent. Now unless the conditions are perfect, or I have no choice, the tent is coming up.
    To plus up the heat in my sleep system, I sleep in full base layers, a vapour barrier liner, then throw my insulation layers outside the liner and under the quilt.
    I don’t wear insulated boots, my experience is that they freeze, and are almost impossible to dry. Instead I size up on my boots, and wear base layer socks, thick wool socks, and goretex over socks. I never have to put my feet directly in to ice blocks anymore. I’m glad the boots worked out for you!

      Thanks for your comment. 👋 many years ago, I learned the hard way about not having any starter water in the bottom to help get it going and scorched/ruined a Ti pot. In this situation, I had already drank all my water so I had to carefully melt a small amount if snow initially sort of waving the pot over the flame to not scorch it. After that first boil I kept 1/2inch of water in the pot for the rest of my snow melting.
      What brand/model of gortex socks do you use? I want to get some of those to try out. 😀

      @@MountainsCallingMe no worries, thanks for the brillant content!
      Sounds like Murphy got you good! Do you think a small esbit tab wrapped in foil, as a redundancy for fuel and stove, would be helpful in your setup?
      The Goretex over socks I have were issued, and made by Arc’teryx. I did a quick Google search, but couldn’t find any. So I’m not if sure if it’s discontinued or if it was made for my unit. I did see some by other brands, but can’t vouch for them.

      Esbit is a great idea. I havent ever used esbit but I imagine the weight penalty would be negligible especially if its just a little amount for failsafe. For several years I had been using a caldera cone alcohol stove setup that would allow me to burn twigs as a backup. My snow melting pot I actually nest the cone inside and flip it upside down as a wind screen when using with the Wind Pro 2. That could have saved me if I ran out of fuel on this past trip. I will get some esbit 🤠
      Thanks for checking on the socks. I will google around or find some on Amazon that I can try on a few different brands/types/sizes and keep whichever fits best and return the others. I have a 5 night trip in Yosemite coming up in 2 weeks and temps should be warmer and these Xero boots would be too warm. I plan to wear my regular non-waterproof altras. My toes get cold when they are wet and waterproof socks could be handy. 👍

      @@MountainsCallingMe The thing I like about esbit is that it works above and below the tree line. Shaving off a little will get your tinder lit quick smart, even wet. Sounds like your gear will augment it well.
      I looked up the Caldera stove, they can’t make any more due to supply chain issues. I used to make my own budget version with a soda can and trangia alco stove.
      "Klim Covert" gore Tex socks and "Rocky Gore Tex Waterproof Socks" look analogous from the photos. Again, I have no experience with either product.
      With you on the waterproof boots, they’re only dry on the first day. Yosemite sound awesome this time of year. Have a good one!

    Thanks for the info and great video. I’m going out from Happy Isles for 3 days next week and got a lot out of this. I’m not sure what condition Panorama trail will be in but hope I can make it to Glacier Point with microspikes.

    • @MountainsCallingMe
      @MountainsCallingMe  Рік тому

      Awesome. Glad to hear this helped! I hiked up the Mist Trail to Vernal Fall the day I finished my Pohono hike. Looking up at Panorama could see 100% snow. I saw a comment in the Yosemite subReddit from someone who made it up to Glacier Point with a group of 10 people as a long day hike. They said they had spikes...Definitely bring them and you should be fine. 👍
      I will be back in Yosemite on June 2nd for 5 days trip starting at Happy Isles. I had planned/expected to be able to go up the Half Dome cables, but I doubt the will be up yet....
      Have fun on your trip! 🫡😀

      @@MountainsCallingMe Been checking out your other videos. Great content. I hope the valley doesn't flood for your trip. I'll be back early September for 3 night trip from Tuolumne Meadows to Happy Isles. Plan on hitting Cloud's Rest on the way. Any thoughts on good spots to camp (or any other tips)?

    • @MountainsCallingMe
      @MountainsCallingMe  Рік тому

      Between TM and Happy Isles here are some of my favorite spots to camp:
      1. Lower Cathedral Lake on the eastern shore. Great 360 views.
      2. Between the Clouds Rest junction and Half Dome trail junctions there are lots of great campsites on the south side of the trail. This year there should be good water access from sunrise creek so you wont have to carry water far to these spots. Here is the GPS coordinates 37.744288, -119.509984
      3. On top of Moraine Dome. Does require off-trail travel and carrying water up there. I have camped up there a few times. 37.743144, -119.490334 This ends up being very exposed so if it is very windy you might not want to camp up there.
      One tip if you're not doing it already is to ride the YARTS up to TM. Then you wont have to use two vehicles.
      I too will be in Yosemite in sept. 😀 I have a Glacier Point to LYV permit for Sept 2. Maybe we will cross paths on the trail. Other than Half Dome cables I dont have a route solidified. I may be camping at spot #2 before or after Half Dome.
      Keeping my fingers crossed that in next 2 weeks the water can clear out of the valley. The original plan was Glacier Point to LYV. That permit will be unusable but I kept it anyways. The trip will be with my bro so I booked Happy Isles to LYV under a rec.gov account I created for him... my plan will be to switch my GP permit 7 days out (at 7am pst) when the walkups open up to some other trailhead that is not inside the flood closure zone so we will have two options. Will be sorta bummed either way because I really wanted to take him up the cables. Either way we will have fun.
      I hope your trip next week works out!
