"I had been cooking one pizza when the phone rang. After that I have watched a film where the actor was eating in a restaurant." Thaks for your lessons.
Hi Angel, Great sentences, well done! I would just prefer, "I was cooking a pizza when the phone rang." as this is when one action is in progress and is interrupted by another. This is when we use the past continuous for the action in progress and the past simple for the short completed action, the phone ringing. Then you say, "After that I have watched a film.... " this is the present perfect and as the action is a completed action in the past I think it would be better to use the past simple here. Tenses are difficult but practice makes perfect! Keep up the good work! 👍

Hi Fazil, what a wonderful piece of writing. First of all, your English is EXCELLENT! I am very impressed. I also really appreciate your support and positive comments about my lessons. So thank you very much 🙏🏼. Now for your writing using narrative tenses. It was very well written but to make it even more like a native English speaker, I have some small suggestions for you. Firstly, you say “I had never..”. Whereas it would be better to say, “I never had a chance to have a good English teacher like YOU. (Not yours - yours is a possessive pronoun, it replaces a noun). Then you say, “when I had been a student at school.” It would be better to say “when I was a student.” You use the past simple for a completed action in the past. Finally, you say “since I had been ...”. Whereas it would be better to say “since I have been... “ this is the present perfect tense and is used when the verb still has a result in the present. I hope these comments help. Keep up the good work and thanks again 🙏🏼

Hi M!SH*, Great sentence, well done! Just one little thing missing. We were playing dominos when our science teacher interrupted and gave us a complex task. Hi mere ly, Great sentences, well done! Yesterday I left THE WINDOW OF MY ROOM open WHEN I left my room to get a couple of tools from the garage. But AS It started raining my room FLOODED with water. I called my friend to come and help me. I HAVE never gotten that exhausted before. thanks 🤩 Oh dear! I hope your room is OK now. Just to say "gotten" is American English. I would say, I have never BEEN that exhausted. Here you need the present perfect because your life is not over and you could get exhausted again in the future! Hope that helps!

Well done! A good try. Here's a corrected version of your sentence: "I was wondering, and suddenly, I had thoughts about learning English. After completing my stretching routine, I made a decision to do a quick check on narrative verbs. Everything on the outside had been looking wonderful since last night."

Hello dear teacher . Firstly I am appreciated about the video and again I mesmerized by English lesson thanks to you. Because you did teach very clearly. Thank you for the video and I want to give two examples. First example : I was studying the Math when the phone rang. Second example: I had been reading a book before I went to the bed.
Hi Gurkan, thank you for the positive feedback. As for your two sentences, well done! They are fantastic! Only two tiny things, you would say, "I was studying maths when the phone rang." and for the second one: " I had been reading a book before I went to bed." No "the." Well done! Keep it up! 🙏
My English teacher at my school, gave me the link of your video for the material today. So thank you for your Lesson, that's really helpful for us!! 😊😊

Hello professor Thank you so much for your help and advice, I really appreciate your job. I wish you peace and happiness under the sky of prosperity. All the best. Take care and have a good time. Your Student from Algeria
I' ve never heard the word"narrative" in terms of past tenses. It's just the right term ! Actually we use the past tenses to talk about what happened in the past. It might be a funny story or an accident and to describe things and events in details you need a variety of past tenses. Thank you for the lesson. It's a good idea to highlight the sentences using different colours. It makes your presentation easy and fun to watch Take care You promised to post your videos every week ! It's been long time since you updated the last video. Looking forward to your next one ! Have a great weekend !
Hi Natalie, Thanks for your comments. I am so glad to hear that the different colours make my lessons easy and fun to watch. This is my aim! I would also like to apologise for not making lessons more frequently. I am really sorry! 😞 I will try to bring out another one really soon! Thanks again for your support! Best wishes 🙏

When I went to bought a guitar🎸, isaw the cloud ☁️ were preparing to rain ☔ and I had gone into my car 🚗 before it had been raining. Thanks for your insane teaching ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Mohammad, When I went to BUY a guitar🎸, i saw the cloud ☁️ It was going to rain ☔ For this bit, I am not sure what you want to say. If you use the past perfect and past perfect continuous you are referring to an earlier past. Is this what you want to say? and I had gone into my car 🚗 before it had been raining.
I have lived in Colombia for many years now. It's a really nice country. We are in the October break week. I could say that is very similar to spring break week in the US. I have been working from home the whole week. By the time I had a free time slot today at noon, my kids had been boring a lot. I decided to go out to a mall just to have some fun. We were going out when suddenly my phone rang. It was my wife; she needed me to take her back from her office. We changed our destination to a new one. We took a taxi. We were still in the taxi when my phone rang again. It was my wife again. She liked to confirm what our plans were. Suddenly, we arrived at the office. We met her by the time we had been buying some awesome donuts. Finally, we got back home.
Great writing! Well done! My kids had been BORED a lot. Then, “she needed me to pick her up from her office.” Also, it is a bit confusing when you say, “ we met her by the time we had been buying some awesome donuts.” Here you are using the wrong tense. Maybe, “we met her while we were buying? “. I hope that helps!

Past perfect continues: I had been going to gym for5 years Past continues: I was talking with my mom when my mom was asleep Past perfect: she had stress alot Past perfect and Past simple. I ate dinner when he had studied
Your examples show you’re working on understanding past tenses! Let’s refine each example to make them grammatically correct and clarify when each tense is used. ### 1. **Past Perfect Continuous** - **Your Example**: *"I had been going to gym for 5 years."* - **Corrected**: *"I had been going to the gym for 5 years."* - **Explanation**: The **past perfect continuous** (had been + -ing) is used to emphasize the *duration* of an action that started in the past and continued up until another point in the past. Here, you’re saying you had a routine of going to the gym for 5 years before something else happened (which would usually be mentioned in a following sentence). ### 2. **Past Continuous** - **Your Example**: *"I was talking with my mom when my mom was asleep."* - **Corrected**: *"I was talking to my mom when she fell asleep."* - **Explanation**: The **past continuous** (was + -ing) is used for an action that was in progress at a particular moment in the past. Here, the use of "fell asleep" (past simple) works better than "was asleep" to show that *while you were talking, she fell asleep.* The past continuous sets the scene, and the simple past shows the interruption. ### 3. **Past Perfect** - **Your Example**: *"She had stress a lot."* - **Corrected**: *"She had been very stressed"* or *"She had been under a lot of stress."* - **Explanation**: The **past perfect** (had + past participle) shows that something happened before another action in the past. Since "stress" is a noun, we would either say she was *stressed* or *under stress.* Also, using **past perfect continuous** ("had been stressed") works well to describe an ongoing state. ### 4. **Past Simple and Past Perfect Together** - **Your Example**: *"I ate dinner when he had studied."* - **Corrected**: *"I ate dinner after he had studied."* - **Explanation**: When using **past simple** with **past perfect,** the past perfect usually shows an action that was completed before another past action (past simple). Here, using **"after"** makes it clear that he finished studying first, then you ate dinner. Let me know if you need more examples or if anything is still unclear! 😊

In 2012 I used to have a personal blog and wrote about cities that I was visiting on the weekends in the countryside of my state. I had been interested in local gastronomy and local culture. For this reason I had started my trips.
Hi, great sentences, well done! all sounds very interesting! 😉
My parents watched the movie when I had been eating my breakfast.
Hi Sophia, the past perfect continuous describes and earlier past. So here it would be better to say: My parents watched the movie when I was eating my breakfast. Hope that helps!
I had been learning english for a long time and i was searching a video that would help me to improve my skills, but our teacher recommended us to watch this video because he said that we hadn't seen that topic before and it would help us a lot about improving our knowledge.
So glad to hear it!
Hi Mafe I know it is little bit late, but are you still learning english?

Hi Ximena,
Great sentence! You use the tenses correctly, so well done! However, I would just change one thing:
Yesterday, while I was CHARGING my cellphone, the light went out. My mom started to shout because she had been working all day and she didn't save her work.
Hope that helps! 😊
Last night, I was studying the narrative tenses, because I didn't understand it, until I founded this one master piece, then I had been practicing a Lot, and finally I'd got learnt the topic.

We were playing dominos when our science teacher interrupted and gave us a complex task. Afterwards, we *DISCUSSED THE* problem for more than an hour before we found the right solution.
Thank you for clear explanation!
Hi M!SH*, Great sentence, well done! Just one little thing missing.
We were playing dominos when our science teacher interrupted and gave us a complex task. Afterwards, we DISCUSSED THE problem for more than an hour before we found the right solution. You need to use the past simple as it is a completed action in the past. Hope that helps! 🙏

Yesterday I left THE WINDOW OF MY ROOM open WHEN I left my room to get a couple of tools from the garage. But AS It started raining my room FLOODED with water. I called my friend to come and help me. I HAVE never gotten that exhausted before. thanks 🤩
Oh dear! I hope your room is OK now. Just to say "gotten" is American English. I would say, I have never BEEN that exhausted. Here you need the present perfect because your life is not over and you could get exhausted again in the future!
Hope that helps!
I had been looking for information about narrative tenses because I was asked in my english class to bring some examples of them and I was dealing with the actual concept. Thank you I have understood what narrative tenses are!

Only two tiny things, you would say,
"I was studying maths when the phone rang."
and for the second one: " I had been reading a book before I went to bed." No "the."

All the best.
Take care and have a good time.
Your Student from Algeria
Hi Said, thank you for your kind words. Hello to all students in Algeria!
It makes your presentation easy and fun to watch
Take care
You promised to post your videos every week !

Hi Mohammad,
When I went to BUY a guitar🎸, i saw the cloud ☁️ It was going to rain ☔
For this bit, I am not sure what you want to say.

Then, “she needed me to pick her up from her office.” Also, it is a bit confusing when you say, “ we met her by the time we had been buying some
awesome donuts.” Here you are using the wrong tense. Maybe, “we met her while we were buying? “. I hope that helps!

Past perfect continues: I had been going to gym for5 years
Past continues: I was talking with my mom when my mom was asleep
Past perfect: she had stress alot
Past perfect and Past simple.
I ate dinner when he had studied
Your examples show you’re working on understanding past tenses! Let’s refine each example to make them grammatically correct and clarify when each tense is used.
### 1. **Past Perfect Continuous**
- **Your Example**: *"I had been going to gym for 5 years."*
- **Corrected**: *"I had been going to the gym for 5 years."*
- **Explanation**: The **past perfect continuous** (had been + -ing) is used to emphasize the *duration* of an action that started in the past and continued up until another point in the past. Here, you’re saying you had a routine of going to the gym for 5 years before something else happened (which would usually be mentioned in a following sentence).
### 2. **Past Continuous**
- **Your Example**: *"I was talking with my mom when my mom was asleep."*
- **Corrected**: *"I was talking to my mom when she fell asleep."*
- **Explanation**: The **past continuous** (was + -ing) is used for an action that was in progress at a particular moment in the past. Here, the use of "fell asleep" (past simple) works better than "was asleep" to show that *while you were talking, she fell asleep.* The past continuous sets the scene, and the simple past shows the interruption.
### 3. **Past Perfect**
- **Your Example**: *"She had stress a lot."*
- **Corrected**: *"She had been very stressed"* or *"She had been under a lot of stress."*
- **Explanation**: The **past perfect** (had + past participle) shows that something happened before another action in the past. Since "stress" is a noun, we would either say she was *stressed* or *under stress.* Also, using **past perfect continuous** ("had been stressed") works well to describe an ongoing state.
### 4. **Past Simple and Past Perfect Together**
- **Your Example**: *"I ate dinner when he had studied."*
- **Corrected**: *"I ate dinner after he had studied."*
- **Explanation**: When using **past simple** with **past perfect,** the past perfect usually shows an action that was completed before another past action (past simple). Here, using **"after"** makes it clear that he finished studying first, then you ate dinner.
Let me know if you need more examples or if anything is still unclear! 😊
Incredibly clear class, all troughout.
Thanks Ines!
