  • EXPERIMENT! BEST bait for CRABBING - STONE CRAB TRAPS | Pig Feet vs. Fish Carcass
We have been stone crabbing every season for the past several years and have always used a variety of baits. When we have fish carcasses available that is our go-to, if we have time to get to the butcher we will buy some pigs feet and when we are in a pinch we use chicken thighs from Winn Dixie! In the past we never really questioned our choice of bait but always experimented with where to drop our traps. Early this season we found a the perfect location to drop our traps and decided it was time to experiment with bait. On this specific day we battled fish carcasses to pigs feet and were eager to learn the answer!

Being an avid fly fisherman, I'm a big believer in matching the hatch. While scavengers will eat basically anything, i gotta believe fish carcasses would do better. Dead fish are their primary diet. I don't think pigs are losing too many of their feet out at sea. Haha. Great experiment ladies!

Another great informative video..! Here on the west coast of Canada, when I go crabbing, If I don't have any left over fish carcasses for bait I just go to the grocery store and buy the cheapest tins of cat food in whatever fish flavour they have. Its excellent crab bait, just open up the can partway to let out all the smell but not open enough that the crabs can eat all you bait. Generally we drop traps in the morning, fish all day and then come back to the traps for the crabby bounty. Give it a try and let us know how it works. Cheers

ROTFL @ the crab dropping it's own claws. I had been wondering after the recent 'is it legal' crab video whether there was a way you could convince a crab to drop it's claws naturally rather than forcing it. Guess the answer is yes. Now the trick is to figure out what Emily did to make it do that. LOLOL

Captains, something tells me crabs are not picky eaters. Try any meat, chicken pieces, chicken livers, chicken neck, hot dogs (if they will not get through the sides of your traps) etc. Heck they have been using hot dogs fishing for Northern Pike and Musky in the Midwest. Something tells me it’s more about the location. Fish on. Thanks for taking me along.

    Pigs' feet: 5 crabs in 3 traps = 1.67 +- 0.56 crabs per trap.
    Fish: 7 crabs in 4 traps = 1.75 +- 0.44 crabs per trap.
