I still have and play this! I purchased a copy just two weeks before the 2001 Daytona 500 that took Earnhardt Sr's life... I have always enjoyed making my own skin designs and creating my own drivers and teams, while mixing them with the default drivers... Graphics and AI is rather limited, so I am trying to find a copy on disc of Papyrus NASCAR Racing Season 2003, which was better designed, and has many more patches and mods that improve the simulator feel and make it unique to different decades of racing... The current iRacing platform is based on what was done on NR2003, Although the technology has surpassed, both these simulators are sort of milestones in sim racing...
I'm still not sure which mod to use for the series, there's so many out there. Personally my favourites would have to be the Cup90 and Truck series. We'll see!
@@Dan-Bartlett I would prefer the cup 04 cars. I just have a bad feeling about the CoT cars with the wings they had in 07-09. I've always prefered gen 4 cars :)
Yeah it was surprisingly smooth going, but the replay was very juddery sadly. I'm just hoping that now I've hyped up 2003, that it actually works and doesn't let me down :C
This game blew my mind as far as physics go. It's funny back then my computer was too old to run it very well and now my computer is too new. Never got to really play this game is it was meant to be. But I played NR1999 to death
I know what you mean, back in the good ol' days I was lucky to get a solid 30fps with minimal graphics, nothing changed with the newer hardware haha! Thankfully NR, NR2, NR3, 2002 and 2003 work absolutely fine, which is really surprising for the older ones! Thank you very much for the comment, I do massively appreciate it, and I thoroughly enjoy hearing nostalgic stories!
@@81casperflip I got that on DOSBox, works flawlessly both with my steering wheel. Even newer games have issues with my wheel. Go figure! Now I just need to get my arse in gear to finish off the first game then work my way through the entire series haha
Yeah that was another brainfart moment, because Dale was in that small pack in front I mentioned him as one of the DEI entrants. I didn't realise until I was editing and facepalmed!
Will be honest I did think that before I started watching full time like I played NASCAR 2000 before even watching a race and thought the 3 was a DEI car

Ah this series when nascar racing 1994 came out very ground breaking had license stuff etc very impressive (: down side you coumd't race for other teams ): Nascar racing 2 1996 came out also very well done game very fun game.Finally nascar legends 1999 was amazing as well showing off old legends impressive that's all
@@Goodstone_5488 - I've used it both on Win 7 and 10... Only thing is if you run on 10, and don't have a decent quality graphics processor or chipset on your computer, the game will not load and advise you of the problem...
For older games(like 2005 or older), try a directX wrapper to better convert to modern hardware using direct3d, such as dgvoodoo. Pretty neat look at an oldie though :D
Sorry for the 9 month late reply! I didn't get a notification from UA-cam. At the time I did try many different options, OpenGL, D3D, DGVooDoo even the NGlide but nothing worked at all. For some reason the game just didn't like Windows 7 (like many other old games). But at least 2002 and 2003 season seem to be much more stable. Even NR3 with the NGlide plugin. But then NR4 was always a bit weird like that, and it never ran efficiently from day 1

@@Dan-Bartlett I was just wondering if they worked with the NR4 mod for NR2003. Also, I tried to add the NR4 Demo cars into the game, but it seems like they don't work. Maybe they are a different model altogether as like the UK version: no Manufacturers.
@@HiyoriAroused Yeah the NR4 models were different to the later versions, lower poly count and more simplistic designs. So I doubt they would work unfortunately. I've not tried the NR4 mod for 2003 but I doubt the cars are a similar build to 4, so I've not got the foggiest!
Man, maybe it's my steering wheel but I could never hold a line all that well in simulation mode. Arcade is far easier to handle and I've been playing these games my whole life. What wheel are you using?
Oh man, good question! There weren't many mods for the game, as such, only a few tracks like Zenjoltis, but I'm unsure if the sites that hosted them still exist. I would do a quick google search and see if places like Nascarnet still operate, they had a few tracks and carsets back in the day but I'm unsure if they still do now. Sorry I can't be much more help! :(

Notta clue, I only ever used a controller or my steering wheel, if you're using a keyboard there won't be any axis, per-se. It'll just be either 0 or 100% steering lock
@@neoandroid4203 I believe it's auto set to the arrow keys, but again I'm not totally sure 'cause I never used the keyboard. There may be a way to rebind the controls the main controls text file or possibly the core.ini. But if I recall it's usually set to the arrow keys. Failing that if you have a spare 360 controller it'll pick it up with no issues
@@neoandroid4203 Ah try this, just did a quick search and apparently turning on 'Num Lock' you're able to use the keypad for controls. Assuming it's 8 for accelerate, 4 and 6 for steering and 2 for brakes. There should be a text file called 'Controls' otherwise usually in the user folder
Not difficult at all actually, installs fine, just need to run the game as admin and compatibility mode, but it's just the poor framerate that's the main issue
@@Dan-Bartlett I have issues with blurry textures on a laptop with XP installed (built 2012). Going to experiment with some .ini changes and see if we can clear them up. The great grandad of iRacing!
@@BunkerMonkeyUK Yeah I still get blurry textures on NR2002 and 2003, I think it's just because of the newer hardware it doesn't load textures properly but I'm not 100% sure on that! I used to get it a lot when I first got the game because the system I had struggled to even run the game on the lowest graphic settings!
Oh without a doubt, and Windows 10. For some reason many older games hate Windows 7 which is what I was running at the time, could never work my head around it!

Personally Nascar Racing 2 was my favourite of the old-style Nascar games. Nascar 3 was also pretty good!

Erratic fps on old games is often bound to multiple cores on modern cpus. Set affinity to cpu 0 only.
I did, didnt help sadly, the frames were just as bad. And I was using the 4gb patch too

I was using my Logitech G29, I just made sure to decrease the steering lock to about 540 rather than the default 900 degrees

you need to reduce the number of cars shown on screen.
i reccomend just having at least 10 cars in your front view and 5 in the back
The number of cars on screen isn't the issue, unfortunately some games of this age just don't perform well on newer systems
