I have a similar life style in the Philippines, but I have lesser expenses than you! I’m glad you like living in my home country. I’ve lived in eastern U.S for 55 years, I love it here, but life in Cebu is better. Thank you for appreciating the Filipino lifestyle.
Women's retirement are way simpler than men's especially single men's. My goodness what will you be doing with all your money if you have less expenses than him. 55 years in US is huge money. The house alone practically tripled in value. I suggest you eat all the food in expensive restaurants now and spend the money down so you don't give them indirectly to people who will squander them. You earned them.

I live in Bacolod, my expenses are much lower but I can get my daily macadamia nut cookie at Starbucks, for the phone I pay 400 pesos a month for unlimited data, for the most part I use 2 electric fans unless it's really warm then I'll use the ac for 4 hours then use the fans, food including eating out $200, I often eat at home to lower my salt intake, haven't done any travelling, hate the new protocols, I often use public transport as I'm in no hurry to go from point a to b. I eat a big meal for lunch but dinner can just be a sandwich or a blizzard at DQ.
It cost me $4000-$5000 to live basic life is Southern California and the female population here sucks so that does not include dating. Can not wait for Thailand to open up and enjoy life again.
I lived in Jomtien in 2019, a 5 minute baht bus ride to Pattaya but MUCH better beach rentals and prices! 900 meters to the beach, huge pool, cable TV, wifi.. $220 usd a month. Fresh street Thai food $1.70.. great weather, $9 one hour body massage, smiling faces, 10 baht (33 cents) bus rides, and I walked the beach boardwalk daily for free. My Navy pension is $2500 a month.. I spent $1500, had fun and saved $1000.. but I DON'T drink alcohol, so give yourself $300 for beer money if you drink. But with all the extra costs and quarantine, I'm in Mexico City "NO restrictions" until November. Curtis from San Diego
You can go to Thailand now, just have arrange a visa in advance, have a negative COVID test no more than 72 hours before departure and do 14-day quarantine in a state-approved hotel once you arrive. Need travel / medical insurance too. So, not good for those wanting to just do a short vacation
@Robert Farrell, I also live in Southern California. If you were making $40K - $50K per month dating young pretty women would be fairly easy. Owner of the company I worker for made around $40K per month living in Newport Beach. He is a FAT (335 lbs) 55 yr old and dating thin good looking 20ish girls. So I'm moving to the Philippines and hope my my $2K per month retirement income will attract a nice younger women. LOL

I am already semi retired and enjoy working part time. I’m considering full time retirement in either Thailand or the Philippines after the Pandemic, not before. I have a feeling the Pandemic and related travel restrictions are going to be with us for a least another year or two (but I hope I am wrong)
Just watched this video and I totally understand what you’re saying about your budget for you and how you want to live. I have watched several videos on monthly budgets and I feel they all share some great insights and honestly it really boils down to how you have and how you want to live. If I get to make my way down there in a couple of years, which I hope to, everyone sharing there budgets and how they do things is a great help. Hi Gio, I lived in Cebu IT park Calyx for over a year. I kept a budget just from my credit cards and bank ATM statements. I was dead on your average during the pandemic. I was $2000 average before covid. The difference was I went out a lot more when I could. I will hit bars or clubs once in a while and just enjoy life. I don't budget, I just keep track every few months from bank records. Life is more fun when you don't have a budget. Also, I was almost always with a gf and paying for her. I can't wait to get back there.
That's really good that is the kind of lifestyle I plan on living. I don't like having a budget either so I planned for $3,000-$5,000 a month. But it sounds like I can keep it way under 3,000 and still do everything I want.
I was a but surprised by your costs per month. I don’t go to Starbucks every day and I can eat much cheaper at a nearby small restaurant. My apartment was in a high rise and had all the amenities needed for myself. I didn’t pay for parking my electric bike under the building which has charges for 2 Chinese dollars. I realize you work so I understand. I go to the supermarket, the barber and the Mall where I went to Pizzahut! I think it’s fine but in China you can’t work past 60 years old which I have been doing. I respect your lifestyle but I now speak Chinese and have so many Chinese friends to do things with. But, I’m still considering coming to the Philippines. Thanks for your video. In China you pay on an average 6,000 rmb every three months which is about $1,000 US Dollars. They have cheaper apartments as well as I’m sure in the Philippines. Not to sound like I’m complaining as I have always worked in China. So I never touched my money back home in my American bank. The problem with China the government is so very strict unless you have a business here or are married to a Chinese woman. Sadly, most Chinese women are always concerned about your money. Hello Gio and I agree with your monthly expense report analysis. If anyone spends about $1500 per month, dont come at all making ONLY that amount. ALWAYS make sure you have ENOUGH money over that amount to keep and for any emergency along your way. Plus the fact that I'm sure too many expats UNDERESTIMATE their cost of living because they think that they don't need this or that or don't do this or that! I live under $500 a month and still live like a king, the maid costs me 4,000 pesos a month, zero for rent, zero for visa, I use public transport, often eat at home to save on cost, I can still get my daily macadamia nut cookie at Starbucks, my brunch is a fruit-veggie shake, a big meal for lunch then a sandwich for dinner, cost of living in the province is cheaper.
Agreed. Going to Philippines thinking $600/month with no medical insurance and nothing for emergencies will afford living like a king is delusional and irresponsible. This is for an expat without family who can support them whilst in the Philippines. If a Filipino retiree runs out of funds, they can always work again or rely on family for some support. Whereas the expat does not.

I find your figures very reasonable for "non-extravagant" low-key Western style Living in a major city. I am looking at $2,000 a month minimum, mostly a rent based on $700.00. My health insurance would be MUCH more -- I am much older than you. I prefer a rental house to condo because they are less expensive and much more space. However, condos have advantages.
I was always told to rent month to month outside of the USA bc as we all saw, a country will kick an expat out of their country with the quickness during the pandemic. Now if you owned property you would be screwed like so many expats have been bc of these reasons. Rent my fam, you can come & go as you please & change locations with little friction. Mactan Newtown is like living on the moon. Units are really nice and quiet but distant from city. It’s like living in a remote part of Houston or the outer edge of Brooklyn NY out towards Long Island.
I lived on the far side of Brooklyn. sheepshead bay, and wished I stayed in Park Slope for the food and events. Where Gio lives, from his video's, there appears to be a lot to do that I am interested in. Still a lot of younger people do active stuff where Gio is.

Like you said - rent is cheap because no tourists during pandemic, health insurance is cheap because you are under 50, cost of buying/renting the bike itself is not included, some people probably eat 3-4 times a day or bigger meals. So, if I try to adjust your budget for a 66 y/o retiree after borders reopen, I think 2K USD per month on a tourist visa. With SRRV , there is a big deposit to make, so budget will grow accordingly. Like you, I always allot more money than what seems reasonable on paper because I'm a human being, not a robot. Besides, I'd rather budget more than what I need than not budget enough. Yeah to give up western comforts , need to think a million times because if you want to maintain western average standard living , being a Filipina long time living in the western , it’s much much more expensive to live in the Philippines .
I spend a month every year in the Philippines living with my wife's family (Angono, Rizal) and I fully believe all your expenses plus, as you say, you could live considerably cheaper. The one expense that did surprise me was your medical/travel insurance as I would have expected at least double that. Age increments accepted, would it be a similar amount if you left your expat employment and became a permanent resident of the Philippines?

Oh yes, we know each individual would be different. Pretty much, if I was there. I am at least 90 percent concurrent on that budget you gave. So, I would do exactly as you advised. Your maximum expenses is within my budget for the future when I do decide to move to the Philippines and retire. I think that’s great but I don’t get a pension worth $5,000 a month and I was in the military. But, I was able to sustain myself working at several schools and universities which supplemented my income. I actually don’t know many Americans getting that a month. Maybe I live in the wrong neighborhood. I am Not bitter or jealous and respect your lifestyle; but I’m more realistic to my needs and those expenditures I don’t need every day. I think that’s great! Again another fine video. I’m looking at the countryside to live and be near a city. I’ve been a foreign teacher in China many years but I use to work in another field. Great perspective for me to think on and decide. However, I saw they had a veteran’s hospital if I’m correct in Cebu City which is great as I get free medical all my life which is what I have been doing and using when I go visit the States except for small medical emergencies then I go to the Chinese hospital where I get free medical from my job.
Thanks for sharing your expenses, and I can see the advantages for sure. As a guy who is thinking about the Philippines, Cebu and the surrounding areas is really attractive. Two things come to mind from your video. One, are there suburbs around the area that you could save a little on rent but still be close to the city and take advantage of the lifestyle. Two, at some point in 22 and beyond, the rents in this area are going to go back up to pre-pandemic prices and then continue to rise as they were before the pandemic.
I live in Los Angeles California and rents and housing are so expensive I am probably going to leave in a few years. Looking at KL or Penang, Malaysia. Thank you for this video and it's content. It great to hear other Americans living in other places that have a good quality of life and affordable.

I have budget will be roughly 4000 per month. But that's just a rough estimate. Once I'm there, I can always adjust. And I already have traveler's / medical insurance. Thanks for posting this, from all the other videos I see (thanks all you guys for posting), your situation is more like I'd like. I guess from looking at other videos, I thought that condos like the one you post about were non-existent. I'm thinking to visit the Philippines for and option to live at least part of my retirement. To me, $1500 to $1600 per month for a comfortable life style seems pretty reasonable considering how nice your place appears to be.

My dad and I live in a senior park we paid $12,000 for a real nice mobile 3 years ago today with all the people moving in its probably worth about 30k and our rent is $650.00 trash,sewer,water and lawn service,electric average $150.00 a month but I'm diabetic with heart and kidney issues that is what's keeping me here although I'm going to look in to the medical info that he talked about,but Florida can be really cheap place to live to

Just allow a little extra for the unexpected, Visa extensions, trips and hotels away from the home base, possible hospital visit, if you drink, if you meet girls in bars who are drinking, weekly STD meds, etc hehe. Living a good life for me is $2400 AUD. His video is during a pandemic with lots of BS rules and I'm sure he would agree it goes up during normal times as my pandemic budget was the same as his.
I live in mindanao, Davao area. My rent is 140 (2br apartment, new) electric is about 70, wifi 40 (30 mbps), water 4. I sometimes get a load for my phone so total is less than 10. Food is cheap here so I stopped cooking. We only eat out and its pennies on the dollar. I struggle to spend 40 a week on eating out. We go out 2 days a week and eat out/order in all the time, which includes the lady who comes by every morning selling breakfast foods. All in all I spend about 600 on average, but mostly less than that. And yes we travel to mount apo area and many of the beautiful beaches from davao to German, including the private beaches and small islands only acce6by boat. It really depends on area and how one wants to live. I dont need a pool as I'm a few minutes away from 2 beaches too.
Are there decent apartments there for $200-$250 in Cebu area, and does security screen your guests at your condo? Also most of that travel insurance just reimburses the insured. A person has to ask for a direct pay policy to the hospitals to avoid having to pay the medical bills upfront.
There are decent apartments for that range but nothing I personally feel comfortable in but I am sure if you looked hard enough you could find a hidden gem.

I am planning on not so much provencial life, but somewhere like Dumaguete or Bocolod or such, and do some exploring from there. From what I have seen, I should be fine with the 3300 dollar pension and then some, which would be almost a poverty wage here. Then I can use some of my 401k for some out of country travel, buying a motorbike, etc. Here in the States, that 401k would be getting sucked down just to be comfortable. 3 more years. Can't wait.

That's great information. Despite loathing cities, it is interesting to see the lifestyle and the economics. We spend about $2,000/month for a family of four plus my wife's family in the province but we own the house so no rent. We're on the ocean front so we can swim. But we're happy to walk away from the house, her family can just keep it. We thought about retiring there permanently and building quite a compound off Samar. But not now. I'm willing to pay quite a bit for freedom, it turns out. We're running $3,500/month in the USA and also own the property here, no mortgage or rent. Just higher cost of living.

@@JJ-wr4qj this is tough to answer but something I have also thought about. Quick and dirty math below: Assume monthly income required in USD is $1500 based on the video about. That’s $$18,000 per year. You’ll keep your US citizenship so assume you need to pay US income taxes, so add 20% to the $18,000 -> $21,600. Referring to the FIRE movement, If your goal is to live off income you’ve saved and invested primarily so you’re not obligated to get a job while there, if you use the 4% rule then you need $540,000 in a diversified investment account to make this happen. May want to add another $50,000 to $100,000 for an insurance policy at a minimum. Any additional income is a bonus then.
Very well documented Gio and very good informative video as usual. The only thing I would add is the cost of premium cigars. I suspect they are a pricy item, probably double the cost of what one would pay in the US.
I dont think they that expensive as i know a girl and her family has a farm outside cebu and they grow tobacco aand sell cigarretes, but im not for sure

Thanks Gio for showing your real cost to "live" not exist. If you want to have a life, you have to spend money. Thanks for being honest. I live about 8 miles from downtown Cebu and to live, date, do things, travel, cover break downs, medical, eat well, security, you have to have a good/bigger budget/income. Everyone is different with different situations.
I've been living here for 20yrs in the bicol airea, I bought one hector on the main road built my home and now I only have electric and water bills to pay.
I built my house in Bicol in the 90's, still have it but have been back in the UK, for many years. I just could not make enough income there. Due to go back out for a long stay 22 or 23.

I'm going back to Cebu City soon. I'm currently in Davao City. In Cebu, I was living at the Horizons 101 condo on Mango Ave aka the red light district. The club music doesn't stop til 5 a.m. and I can hear it even being on the 29th floor! When I go back to Cebu, I want someplace quiter so is IT Park my option? Note that my monthly rent for a fully furnished condominium was 25k (all included, water and electricity). Can I find something similar at IT Park?

I have a similar life style in the Philippines, but I have lesser expenses than you! I’m glad you like living in my home country. I’ve lived in eastern U.S for 55 years, I love it here, but life in Cebu is better. Thank you for appreciating the Filipino lifestyle.
Women's retirement are way simpler than men's especially single men's. My goodness what will you be doing with all your money if you have less expenses than him. 55 years in US is huge money. The house alone practically tripled in value. I suggest you eat all the food in expensive restaurants now and spend the money down so you don't give them indirectly to people who will squander them. You earned them.

I live in Bacolod, my expenses are much lower but I can get my daily macadamia nut cookie at Starbucks, for the phone I pay 400 pesos a month for unlimited data, for the most part I use 2 electric fans unless it's really warm then I'll use the ac for 4 hours then use the fans, food including eating out $200, I often eat at home to lower my salt intake, haven't done any travelling, hate the new protocols, I often use public transport as I'm in no hurry to go from point a to b. I eat a big meal for lunch but dinner can just be a sandwich or a blizzard at DQ.
It cost me $4000-$5000 to live basic life is Southern California and the female population here sucks so that does not include dating. Can not wait for Thailand to open up and enjoy life again.
You'll do well in Thailand with half that budget.

I lived in Jomtien in 2019, a 5 minute baht bus ride to Pattaya but MUCH better beach rentals and prices! 900 meters to the beach, huge pool, cable TV, wifi.. $220 usd a month.
Fresh street Thai food $1.70.. great weather, $9 one hour body massage, smiling faces, 10 baht (33 cents) bus rides, and I walked the beach boardwalk daily for free.
My Navy pension is $2500 a month.. I spent $1500, had fun and saved $1000.. but I DON'T drink alcohol, so give yourself $300 for beer money if you drink.
But with all the extra costs and quarantine, I'm in Mexico City "NO restrictions" until November. Curtis from San Diego
You can go to Thailand now, just have arrange a visa in advance, have a negative COVID test no more than 72 hours before departure and do 14-day quarantine in a state-approved hotel once you arrive. Need travel / medical insurance too. So, not good for those wanting to just do a short vacation
@Robert Farrell, I also live in Southern California. If you were making $40K - $50K per month dating young pretty women would be fairly easy. Owner of the company I worker for made around $40K per month living in Newport Beach. He is a FAT (335 lbs) 55 yr old and dating thin good looking 20ish girls. I have watched several videos on monthly budgets and I feel they all share some great insights and honestly it really boils down to how you have and how you want to live. If I get to make my way down there in a couple of years, which I hope to, everyone sharing there budgets and how they do things is a great help. Hi Gio, I lived in Cebu IT park Calyx for over a year. I kept a budget just from my credit cards and bank ATM statements. I was dead on your average during the pandemic. I was $2000 average before covid. The difference was I went out a lot more when I could. I will hit bars or clubs once in a while and just enjoy life. I don't budget, I just keep track every few months from bank records. Life is more fun when you don't have a budget. Also, I was almost always with a gf and paying for her. I can't wait to get back there.
That's really good that is the kind of lifestyle I plan on living. I don't like having a budget either so I planned for $3,000-$5,000 a month. But it sounds like I can keep it way under 3,000 and still do everything I want.
I was a but surprised by your costs per month. I don’t go to Starbucks every day and I can eat much cheaper at a nearby small restaurant. My apartment was in a high rise and had all the amenities needed for myself. I didn’t pay for parking my electric bike under the building which has charges for 2 Chinese dollars. I realize you work so I understand. I go to the supermarket, the barber and the Mall where I went to Pizzahut! I think it’s fine but in China you can’t work past 60 years old which I have been doing. I respect your lifestyle but I now speak Chinese and have so many Chinese friends to do things with. But, I’m still considering coming to the Philippines. Thanks for your video. In China you pay on an average 6,000 rmb every three months which is about $1,000 US Dollars. They have cheaper apartments as well as I’m sure in the Philippines. Hello Gio and I agree with your monthly expense report analysis. If anyone spends about $1500 per month, dont come at all making ONLY that amount. ALWAYS make sure you have ENOUGH money over that amount to keep and for any emergency along your way. Plus the fact that I'm sure too many expats UNDERESTIMATE their cost of living because they think that they don't need this or that or don't do this or that! I live under $500 a month and still live like a king, the maid costs me 4,000 pesos a month, zero for rent, zero for visa, I use public transport, often eat at home to save on cost, I can still get my daily macadamia nut cookie at Starbucks, my brunch is a fruit-veggie shake, a big meal for lunch then a sandwich for dinner, cost of living in the province is cheaper.

Agreed. Going to Philippines thinking $600/month with no medical insurance and nothing for emergencies will afford living like a king is delusional and irresponsible. This is for an expat without family who can support them whilst in the Philippines. If a Filipino retiree runs out of funds, they can always work again or rely on family for some support. Whereas the expat does not.

I find your figures very reasonable for "non-extravagant" low-key Western style Living in a major city. I am looking at $2,000 a month minimum, mostly a rent based on $700.00. My health insurance would be MUCH more -- I am much older than you. I prefer a rental house to condo because they are less expensive and much more space. However, condos have advantages.
I was always told to rent month to month outside of the USA bc as we all saw, a country will kick an expat out of their country with the quickness during the pandemic. Now if you owned property you would be screwed like so many expats have been bc of these reasons.
Rent my fam, you can come & go as you please & change locations with little friction. Anyway be well & I wish you the best in paradise.

Lapu-Lapu is a city on the island of Mactan which is connected to the city of Cebu on the island of Cebu by two bridges.

Mactan Newtown is like living on the moon. Units are really nice and quiet but distant from city. It’s like living in a remote part of Houston or the outer edge of Brooklyn NY out towards Long Island.
I lived on the far side of Brooklyn. sheepshead bay, and wished I stayed in Park Slope for the food and events. Where Gio lives, from his video's, there appears to be a lot to do that I am interested in. Still a lot of younger people do active stuff where Gio is.
Nice video ! Like you said - rent is cheap because no tourists during pandemic, health insurance is cheap because you are under 50, cost of buying/renting the bike itself is
not included, some people probably eat 3-4 times a day or bigger meals.
So, if I try to adjust your budget for a 66 y/o retiree after borders reopen, I think 2K USD per month on a tourist visa. With SRRV , there is a big deposit to make, so budget will grow accordingly. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Yeah to give up western comforts , need to think a million times because if you want to maintain western average standard living , being a Filipina long time living in the western , it’s much much more expensive to live in the Philippines .
I spend a month every year in the Philippines living with my wife's family (Angono, Rizal) and I fully believe all your expenses plus, as you say, you could live considerably cheaper. The one expense that did surprise me was your medical/travel insurance as I would have expected at least double that. Age increments accepted, would it be a similar amount if you left your expat employment and became a permanent resident of the Philippines?

Oh yes, we know each individual would be different. Pretty much, if I was there. I am at least 90 percent concurrent on that budget you gave. So, I would do exactly as you advised. Your maximum expenses is within my budget for the future when I do decide to move to the Philippines and retire. I think that’s great but I don’t get a pension worth $5,000 a month and I was in the military. But, I was able to sustain myself working at several schools and universities which supplemented my income. I actually don’t know many Americans getting that a month. Maybe I live in the wrong neighborhood. I am Not bitter or jealous and respect your lifestyle; but I’m more realistic to my needs and those expenditures I don’t need every day. I think that’s great! Again another fine video. I’m looking at the countryside to live and be near a city. I’ve been a foreign teacher in China many years but I use to work in another field. Great perspective for me to think on and decide. However, I saw they had a veteran’s hospital if I’m correct in Cebu City which is great as I get free medical all my life which is what I have been doing and using when I go visit the States except for small medical emergencies then I go to the Chinese hospital where I get free medical from my job.

Thanks for sharing your expenses, and I can see the advantages for sure. As a guy who is thinking about the Philippines, Cebu and the surrounding areas is really attractive. Two things come to mind from your video. One, are there suburbs around the area that you could save a little on rent but still be close to the city and take advantage of the lifestyle. Two, at some point in 22 and beyond, the rents in this area are going to go back up to pre-pandemic prices and then continue to rise as they were before the pandemic.
I live in Los Angeles California and rents and housing are so expensive I am probably going to leave in a few years. Looking at KL or Penang, Malaysia. Thank you for this video and it's content. It great to hear other Americans living in other places that have a good quality of life and affordable.

My dad and I live in a senior park we paid $12,000 for a real nice mobile 3 years ago today with all the people moving in its probably worth about 30k and our rent is $650.00 trash,sewer,water and lawn service,electric average $150.00 a month but I'm diabetic with heart and kidney issues that is what's keeping me here although I'm going to look in to the medical info that he talked about,but Florida can be really cheap place to live to

Nice options there. Thinking about Cebu as the retirement location a few years out though. Any issues riding your motorbike in town, vs driving a car? I remember the traffic in Cebu, not as bad as Manilla, but still pretty crazy.

You'll be all set for a good lifestyle.
Just allow a little extra for the unexpected, Visa extensions, trips and hotels away from the home base, possible hospital visit, if you drink, if you meet girls in bars who are drinking, weekly STD meds, etc hehe. Living a good life for me is $2400 AUD. His video is during a pandemic with lots of BS rules and I'm sure he would agree it goes up during normal times as my pandemic budget was the same as his.
I live in mindanao, Davao area. My rent is 140 (2br apartment, new) electric is about 70, wifi 40 (30 mbps), water 4. I sometimes get a load for my phone so total is less than 10. Food is cheap here so I stopped cooking. We only eat out and its pennies on the dollar. I struggle to spend 40 a week on eating out.
We go out 2 days a week and eat out/order in all the time, which includes the lady who comes by every morning selling breakfast foods.
All in all I spend about 600 on average, but mostly less than that. And yes we travel to mount apo area and many of the beautiful beaches from davao to German, including the private beaches and small islands only acce6by boat.
It really depends on area and how one wants to live. I dont need a pool as I'm a few minutes away from 2 beaches too.
Are there decent apartments there for $200-$250 in Cebu area, and does security screen your guests at your condo? Also most of that travel insurance just reimburses the insured. A person has to ask for a direct pay policy to the hospitals to avoid having to pay the medical bills upfront.
There are decent apartments for that range but nothing I personally feel comfortable in but I am sure if you looked hard enough you could find a hidden gem.

These are awesome benchmark figures and realistic. I'm gonna be budgeting for dating $1000 a month coz I would date a lot and enjoy the food and beach scene. $2K a month would be my budget.
I am planning on not so much provencial life, but somewhere like Dumaguete or Bocolod or such, and do some exploring from there. From what I have seen, I should be fine with the 3300 dollar pension and then some, which would be almost a poverty wage here. Then I can use some of my 401k for some out of country travel, buying a motorbike, etc. Here in the States, that 401k would be getting sucked down just to be comfortable. 3 more years. Can't wait.

That's great information. Despite loathing cities, it is interesting to see the lifestyle and the economics.
We spend about $2,000/month for a family of four plus my wife's family in the province but we own the house so no rent. We're on the ocean front so we can swim.
But we're happy to walk away from the house, her family can just keep it. We thought about retiring there permanently and building quite a compound off Samar. But not now.
I'm willing to pay quite a bit for freedom, it turns out. We're running $3,500/month in the USA and also own the property here, no mortgage or rent. Just higher cost of living.

@@JJ-wr4qj this is tough to answer but something I have also thought about. Quick and dirty math below:
Assume monthly income required in USD is $1500 based on the video about. That’s $$18,000 per year.
You’ll keep your US citizenship so assume you need to pay US income taxes, so add 20% to the $18,000 -> $21,600.
Referring to the FIRE movement, If your goal is to live off income you’ve saved and invested primarily so you’re not obligated to get a job while there, if you use the 4% rule then you need $540,000 in a diversified investment account to make this happen. May want to add another $50,000 to $100,000 for an insurance policy at a minimum. Any additional income is a bonus then.
Very well documented Gio and very good informative video as usual. The only thing I would add is the cost of premium cigars. I suspect they are a pricy item, probably double the cost of what one would pay in the US.
I dont think they that expensive as i know a girl and her family has a farm outside cebu and they grow tobacco aand sell cigarretes, but im not for sure

Thanks Gio for showing your real cost to "live" not exist. If you want to have a life, you have to spend money. Thanks for being honest. I live about 8 miles from downtown Cebu and to live, date, do things, travel, cover break downs, medical, eat well, security, you have to have a good/bigger budget/income. Everyone is different with different situations.

I've been living here for 20yrs in the bicol airea, I bought one hector on the main road built my home and now I only have electric and water bills to pay.
That saves on one of your biggest expenses for sure.

I built my house in Bicol in the 90's, still have it but have been back in the UK, for many years. I just could not make enough income there. Due to go back out for a long stay 22 or 23.

I'm going back to Cebu City soon. I'm currently in Davao City. In Cebu, I was living at the Horizons 101 condo on Mango Ave aka the red light district. The club music doesn't stop til 5 a.m. and I can hear it even being on the 29th floor! When I go back to Cebu, I want someplace quiter so is IT Park my option? Note that my monthly rent for a fully furnished condominium was 25k (all included, water and electricity). Can I find something similar at IT Park?
Mango is louder than IT Park for sure.
I've been in Hua Hin Thailand for a year and live in a nice 1-bedroom condo with all the amenities on the south side a minute from the beach. $400 a month for rent and utilities. I'm way older than you but happy to be living it up. Started watching you in 2020 when considering the move. Interesting viewpoints. Cheers!

Great breakdown on condo and personal expenses Gio. When my Filipina GF and I shared a furnished condo at Winland Towers in Cebu City, I was paying around $1,400 - $1,600 per month for all of the things you covered here. Nice job!

Another great video Gio. I think the main takeaway, as you conveyed, is that monthly costs are directly related to lifestyle + personal preferences. My own monthly costs here are relatively high, but that's entirely my own choice and circumstance.

Hi thanks this is my first time watching your videos. I was living in Vietnam for 14 yrs and got stuck back in the US. I am now waiting for Philippines to open was thinking about coming over to around where you are. Great info. I have been to the Philippines 2 times in 2007. Are there any nice places to live around $300? I live how you do only a bit cheaper because I did in Vietnam. I am sure I can learn a lot from you.
