Huge essay incoming but... Quite easily one of the best battles in the entire anime just because of how it actively highlights Paul's growth as much as point out the emotional and strategical disadvantage that Ash had in this fight. With a team that was openly prepared and presented to be manipulated like Ash's (at least against Paul's team), Paul managed to overwhelm him due to his experience against most of Ash's team. Knowing Torterra has an inherent advantage against Ash's whole team not counting Gliscor, he led with him. Stone Edge for Chimchar and Staraptor, Grass Typing against Buizel, Ground Typing against Pikachu, and it's the evolved form of Ash's Grotle. Even without the knowledge in the Gliscor matchup, he probably figured if his Gliscor can curbstomp Ash's Gligar at the time, what could his possible Gliscor do to his much more experienced Torterra? Switching in due to the element of surprise being essentially blown after using Stone Edge, he went for Weavile against Staraptor. This is a favorable matchup for both, but I figured since Staraptor won against Honchkrow, Paul probably knew he'd have to outspeed it with effective typing, hence the switch to Weavile. Wasn't enough, but it also proved that Paul was no pushover. He makes the switch into Electabuzz twice for the use of Light Screen, almost a competitive style movement. When Ash switches into Grotle, most likely Paul knew his Honchkrow would be the easiest to win with. Magmortar still could've done the job, but he needed Magmortar for Pikachu and didn't need the risk. Honchkrow also has a past with Grotle, which is what Paul planned on; Ash's determination to beat his opponent to even the score causes his downfall. Once Paul defeats Grotle, the entire battle goes downhill for Ash fairly quickly. His Pikachu becomes neutralized against Paul's Magmortar (3/4 of Pikachu's moves are Physical Contact, so Paul planned on Magmortar's Flame Body), then Buizel was unable to finish off Magmortar due to effective baiting techniques, which led to Ursaring. Ursaring, just like Torterra, was a key player in Paul's team. Between Bulk Up and Guts, he was a hurricane force. If he actually had Light Screen set up for Ursaring it would've been nigh unstoppable. Tears through Buizel, even with the countershield. Then cuts through Staraptor's speed advantage. And finally breaks through Pikachu's electrical control with Guts. Between Staraptor and Pikachu, he switches back to Electabuzz for Light Screen, meanwhile Ash switches to Chimchar. Chimchar affirms its position to win, but Paul is unfazed (without Blaze, he knows Chimchar barely has a chance at closing the gap). Switching to Torterra after Electabuzz, Paul knows Ash has very little options left: Pikachu can't go against Torterra with anything besides Iron Tail, he already has Gliscor on the ropes, and Chimchar is weak to Stone Edge. And even worse for Ash, Torterra has learned how to efficiently control Stone Edge to home in on its opponents. And with Light Screen, Chimchar's Flamethrower has little effect. Making the switch back to Gliscor, Ash wanted to finish this off here, but Paul was quick to respond, and with one well-timed Frenzy Plant, it was all over. After Pikachu gets absolutely bodied by Ursaring, Ash was down to his last Pokemon, Chimchar, and without a doubt, this is where Ash actually realizes he has no chance to win without a proper response to everything he's seen Paul do. His Ursaring has experience against the base Chimchar, so using Chimchar's speed, he got the upper hand. After defeating Ursaring, Chimchar evolves, but one thing that must be addressed is Paul's reaction: static. Not one facial difference between losing Ursaring, witnessing Chimchar's evolution, and seeing it learn Mach Punch. Paul still knows without Blaze, Chimchar still cannot hope to beat Paul's entire team. A great battle then ensues between Electabuzz and Monferno, with them both being equally matched. Neither were completely worn out by this point, so they could both go all out. But Paul's strategy eventually wore through Monferno's desire to win, handing Ash a 4-0 loss. And the loss hit Ash hard, more than his Kalos loss to Wulfric imo (and I love that battle too, so don't get it twisted). But the rebound was all worth it. Easily one of the best defeats Ash has ever had to deal with because it didn't feel overtly forced.

This was one of the most video game accurate battles in the whole anime. 1. Staraptor’s close combat was 4 times super effective against weavile which is why it won 2. Light screen made all of ash’s special attacks weaker 3. Pikachu’s burn made all of its attacks next to worthless 4. Usuring’s bulk up with light screen and later guts made it unstoppable until its 4th battle 5. None of Gliscor’s attacks did too much damage because their was no same type attack boost 6. All of Paul’s Pokémon were fully evolved except for electabuzz whereas Ash only had two fully evolved so Paul’s had better stats 7. A million substitutions because in single battles you can almost never win without the type advantage 😂
I know this is nothing surprising, but ash really let his emotions and feeling get in the way in this fight. Especially when he let grotal fight hounchkrow, or keeping buizal in against urserang. Had he switched them out for better match ups, they wouldn't have been so easily bodied
It also doesn't help that Paul was prepared for almost anything that Ash had up his sleeve. He already knew most of Ash's team by this point. Probably the only one he had never gotten a proper battle against was Buizel, and we know he was watching Ash during the Wallace Cup anyways. Even with Ash's unpredictability, Paul just had enough strategies up his sleeve to deal with almost anything Ash brought to the table.
Love how strategic Sinnnoh was from the substitutions to actually making abilities actual threats like Paul having Ursaring make contact with Pikachu to trigger static to activate guts. Also love they didn’t forget Pikachu’s burn status having it affect it every turn. I’d be remiss in not mentioning Paul’s use of Electabuzz’s light screen 😮💨
What I like about this battle is not just the game mechanics but how it started. Normally ash would have said “fuck it” and tried to fight torterra with Buizel. But across the series he’s been learning a lot from Paul (and viceversa), switching just like how Paul did vs Brandon. Even in the first gym ash just spammed fighting moves with Aipom since that was what Paul did (and lost to Roark unfort)

Paul literally made a mockery out of Ash, and the latter's naïveté, reckless attitude, arrogance, and wrong move choices put Ash in his place. Ash's team with Torterra, Infernape, Empoleon, Garchomp, Staraptor, Floatz and Gliscor could even draw or defeat Paul's entire team no matter the form. Torterra, Weavile, Ursaring, Magmortar, Honchkrow, Electivire, and Gliscor would all bite the dust.
No,this loss is justified,this is their first 6 on 6 battle. If ash won here,the tension between ash and Paul would've ended too soon. Also,Paul has a completely different battle style then what ash was used to in this fight so how could ash know how to beat him

One of the worst battles in the anime when it comes to storytelling. Evil Paul character DID NOT evolved so much just to get reset in Unovaa or something like that.
