Open Baffle Line Array speakers I built.

- I call them OBLA-33's due to being Open Baffle Line Array with 33 drivers in each speaker. Each speaker is 93" tall to reap the greatest benefit of a line array in a listening space.
I live in hot and humid S Florida. My house of 26 years has open beam ceilings (no attic). Recently, I had the the top of the siliconed to diffuse the heat and UVs. What I wasn't prepared for was that it also tightened up the roof which knocked down the high frequency splash, which is what I hear listening to this video. HTH
Fantastic, if possible you should share the design and the construction. Congratulations.
Ha! When people ask, "Did you go to that concert?" You can say "Yeah" every time!!
Sorry for the shaky video and poor sound. I just shot this with a cheap camera. Just wanted to show the OBLA-33 speakers in action.
victoryengineer how did you solve the impedances...a set in series and then parallel
I was wondering about that too! Soooooooo?
@@MichelLinschoten How else?
Three singers are detected. But a theater sounds great with that effect -)
Those look great and I bet they sound great too. I love me a good line array, the scale and effortless dynamics are hard to beat. I have built boxed line arrays but never an OB line array although I have listened to a couple.
Great video. That's made my day! Beautiful speakers, good music what more can you ask for!
To everyone condemning the sound of these speakers... one, you haven't actually heard them. And two, what you have heard is your speakers. Now, which speakers are sounding bad?
dont be an idiot. It clearly sounds bad, either his mic or his speakers have no midrange. Not everyone can build a linesource. Its not easy task.
I get the sense that these sounds fantastic
I can hear a bit of comb filtering, but that's inevitable with a design like this.
Good Job. Liking it.
they sound fantastic and the Mooddragon has speaker envy big time ahaha
Great!
I want one.
Do you get enough low frequency?
Hello good afternoon you did an awesome job on this or a lot of people don't understand the physics behind multiple drivers pushing the same amount of air as one single driver yeah you get more precision due to the smaller Mass. I'm considering building an array similar to yours with the same six and a half inch drivers only my re will consist of only 12 preside what would you say in your opinion the performance of the 12 drivers as far as base is concerned compared to save a 12in or 15in single driver
Hey, Victory I really like this set up do you have a diagram or possible instruction on the build?
Great for live music sound.
Oh yeah! I've ALWAYS preferred the open baffle tall line array sound 😀 Looks like you have a row of ribbons in the middle too. A very good friend of mine who is a stereo design guru helped me design my system which is not as elaborate as yours, but is based upon a similar concept. The speakers are two tall line arrays with multiple small drivers running full range, with only one ribbon tweeter a side (the tweeters are the only ones crossed over with a single capacitor per tweeter) My system is tri-amped with vintage (read: ancient) dual mono amps running the two towers and a Crown 2502 400/side amp running the 2-15" open baffle dipole woofers. I'll try to post a link to pictures of my system if you wanna check it out, but I'll do it in the next comment after this one because Google's AI usually instantly removes the post if I try to do that.
Nice setup mate!
If this post isn't instantly deleted, here is a link to pictures of my system and collection. I've added comments on the lower right of some of the pictures giving more details about my system:

Yes I am planning to build a similar, smaller system, 6 planar ribbon tweeters, and 6 planar ribbon mid ranges, but I don tknow how to connect them to get a final 8 ohm load , I will be using a 3 way electrinic x over and 6 mono amps, the bass section is just two big 12'' woofers in parallel--8+8 = 4 ohm load, can you help me with the connections,
They sound great!
I hope you got a good quantity discount on those drivers.
Pretty sure the woofers were only around six bucks from Parts Express. They punch above their price point though and this whole project was not cheap.
Do you notice comb filtering?
In ambiente fino a che frequenza scende ?
Awesome speakers!!
+bjuck57 , Thank you. They were a labor of love.
+bjuck57 Yours turned out pretty amazing as well!
I know this is youtube through your mic through my speakers but I can tell the soundstage is great and you have a huuuuge sweetspot. The only thing I'm noticing is phasing when you move around and I wonder if this is because the inherent high frequency coupling problems of a line array or something else.
Its like a diffraction grating.
I use the shit out of the same Dayton Planar tweeter -
How are they crossed over ?
What are you using as a source amplifier (1) & (2) how did you work out the crossovers (I'm guessing the mid-woofers are run parallel, no ?
There are no passive crossovers. I am using a MiniDSP active electronic crossover. There are three amplifiers used. A Heathkit AA-1800 drives the mid ranges, a Heathkit AA-1600 drives the tweeters and a Nikko Alpha 650 drives the subs that are located elsewhere in the room.
very interesting ...
Simply redo as CBT to make awesome...
Are those AMT tweeters not bipolar as well?
IMO anything less than 50 speakers per cabinet is simply under engineered.
Not just under engineered .. its a disgrace in my book! 😊
Lol full send
Nice!
Oh my God, that's big. Reminds me of a Dali system which is not OB. The price i think would scare me. I only have 2 small criticisms to do with line array in general 1 distance between the listener and each individual driver and distance between drivers in relation to the frequency. You can confirm this with your calculator by looking at the wavelength and comparing to distance and see what happens.
Id love to hear what Metallica sounds like in your room !
Interesting.
WILD Speakers,BUT you really need a tripod or a broom to stop shaken' that Cam,lol
every time I play this video in my vizio sound bar it cries .
I want to build this!!!
Just go to this link and follow my instructions like others have done.....enjoy! www.audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/robs-obla-33-open-baffle-line-array-project.643433/
Lots of good open baffle theory and calculators on Linkwitzlab.com He's the engineer who gave us the Linkwitz-riley crossover and Linkwitz transform circuit.
yo man i think these would sound better if you were to put them into the corner of the room facing the center of the room this way the sound from the back of the midrange drivers and the front are at a closer wave length as the sound will bounce from the wall at a closer distance
That would defeat the purpose of line array systems and create comb filtering as you moved away from each array and to the center of the room, resulting in a listening experience that is different at every point in the room.
its very live soud wouw
what are the benefits of an open baffle
Sounds really open, clear and makes your box speakers sound ''boxy'' after listening to open baffle. You get rid of box resonance. I made a 4'' fullrange DIY from worthless parts, and to my suprise they do sound very good
FSXgta - PartsExpress has some 6"" for under $5.00 ...........................
I had leftover 4 inch speakers and mdf, whats the problem with using that? :)
I’ve heard open baffle speakers very much like these and in all cases they have an empty sound, just as you would expect because there’s no enclosure. Yes they are lively but fatiguing to the ear.
Hmm, I have several pairs of solo -baric 15" public address woofers pulled from church systems and the no box is so different in the way it doesn't uh doesn't load the room with pressure i guess . but as far as the empty sound . Amplification is required . the easiest way to locate a woofer is to place it at the listening position then just find a place where it is loudest and if possible place one there . Not reasonable to conclude that your impression was a reasonable test . And yes I do like big boxes and little tubes too . Altec VOTT . but Tympani with a dozen 15's solo -baric and now what is your take . just sayin' Peace
Dudes make a cool project and of course people in the comment section are fucking ripping him because why wouldn't they be?
Woow
What is weird is how you can kind of tell they sound good, even though it is coming through my cheap computer spks.
AUA ...
I'm sure they sound okay but IMO they're just a conversation piece which I can accomplish with a cheap Buddha statue.
Nasty song.. Nasty...
Agree horrible version of the song, but great speakers.
Simply TOO bright. I could not get use to hear this VERY DAY :(
I am all for OB speakers and yours look awesome, but i don't like your taste in music.
Sounds like alot of speakers would loooool
Nice speakers but whatever song is playing is freakin awful.
thatsbthe ugliest system i had ever heard
Sounds awful, sorry.
How can you possibly tell over the Internet!
