Very interesting video Andy. It must be so amazing to have so many historic places so close to where you live. I am in total awe as you wander around those places and take it all in. It would surely be very humbling to anyone at the thought of actually tracing the footsteps of ancient populations. So many things have thrived and transpired all around that part of the world. So many things are left for speculation and imagination in order to piece things together to give an idea of what happened centuries ago. That is definitely great food for the soul while viewing such areas. Thank you as always for taking us along with you. See you on the next one.
@campfire52 Hello, Terry. Well thank you for coming along. I do need to correct myself here. I was wrong regarding king Alfred unifying Britain. It was King Æthelstan in 927. This was a great few hours out. It was very enjoyable 😉 Thnx for watching, Terry.
Some history buff's channel came across my feed. He focus on Brittish colonial battles. The last one I watched showed an interesting connection between the Police Inspector who investigated Jack the Ripper, Winston Churchill, General Smuts from the Boer Republics, a battle in South Africa and the naming of Anfield's "The Kop". History is fascinating.
Hey Stefan I liked how Andy added variety today again.... I hope there will not be a test however! Oh and I finally saw the two messages and responded!
It is very fascinating, Stefan. We've lots over here. I enjoyed this video, however I need to correct myself. King Æthelstan in 927 unified Britain, not King Alfred.😊
Hi Andy. Thank you very much for following up my comment with this video, some great insight into the landscape and context behind the battle here. If the historical sources are to be believed, Ashdown was the third of at least six battles fought between the Danes and the West Saxons during the winter of 870/871, with Ashdown being the third; the Danes defeated Alfred’s army at the Battle of Reading on January 4th, and your analysis of the landscape has led me to believe the West Saxons must have retreated West along the Ridgeway, with the Danes pursuing them to Ashdown. You make a great point regarding the importance of the hillforts; I believe this retreat westwards into the North Wessex Downs was a strategic move on Alfred’s part to lure the Dane’s into his own turf and catch them off-guard when they were overconfident following their victory at Reading, and there is no doubt in mind after watching your video that Alfred used the hillforts to his advantage for reconnaissance purposes in the days leading up to the climatic clash at Ashdown. What would follow would be three further clashes with the Danes at Marton, Basing and Wilton; potentially some sites for future exploration? Once again, thanks for taking the time to make this video mate. Also, some pretty audacious drone flying in this one! Best wishes Joe
Very nice touch today Andy..... adding a touch of history, I think it will draw others to your channel. I am happy with dogs and a trail...a simple life for a country girl 🐕🦺🌲🌹🚲🎄🪕☀🦌🐂🚶♀🙏☕🏜🛻🎶
@@GonnaGoForIt Hi, Pete. I went back to see and I did spot it on the big screen. I could really do with an FPV to be honest, it would make it a little clearer. It would be better for my work as well.
Always nice to see some historical tours and background, nice work.
Thanks for watching. It was good to bemoutnhwre. I need to correct myself, it was King Æthelstan in 927 who unified Britain and not King Alfred.
Great information! Amazing drone footage. Love the orange leafs almost like a carpet.

Do they teach Brittish history in UK schools?

Hi, Janet. It was a wonderful time spent in creation. History is very much a thing I like to research.

Interesting video, Andy! Squirrel at 20:00 in the video. Thank you for taking me along. Cheers!
Hi, Dan. This was a very good few hours spent.
A slight correction I need to make.
King Æthelstan in 927 unified Britain, not King Alfred. 😊
@@MadDogsandEnglishman Easy to make a mistake.
Come down this way Andy, I can show you around some really cool places. 😎
Superfast squirrel at 19:57!
@@GonnaGoForIt Hi, Peter. It was so fast I must have missed it. 😁😁
@@MadDogsandEnglishman It's hard to spot on full screen, so it would've been pretty much invisible on your phone screen.

@@MadDogsandEnglishman Yeah, but those are still pretty pricey. I think I'll be buying a Neo next year, so that'll be on my wish list as well.
@@GonnaGoForIt They are great little drones! Very inexpensive and very durable. It's almost the perfect drone.
I think it was king Athelstan who later united the kingdom, pardon the spelling. Alfred was his grandad, or great grandad lol
You are spot on, sir! I went back and fact checked, and I was incorrect. Thank you for correcting me, I very much appreciate that!! 😊
@MadDogsandEnglishman I'll be binge watching the Last Kingdom on Netflix again now lol
