Satyrs are an enormous problem, mainly because they keep drinking my shelves dry before I can. If you look up satyrs or Pan himself, there's a statue with a goat I didn't want to include, but that's their MO. Good ol... uh, public offenders. If you find one, put it down. Like they did with Pan.

Well, “pan-ic” is actually derived from the god Pan; he could scream so hard that it scared the shit out of anyone who was nearby.

Not when Percy gets claimed or when he turns into a guinea pig? Not when Percy dove (or, rather, tried to walk into but failed and just sorta flops) into The River Styx? Hell, not even Pan's death?

I remember I had a group of satyrs party with a group of merchants who were transporting magic items. The satyrs got everyone drunk, and the magic items were trotted out to show the satyrs, who ended up stealing them when everyone else was out cold.
These included a table that could create hero's feast once a day, a rag that could clean anything, two belts of giant strength, a decanter of endless wine(mediocre quality), a harp of charming and Pipe's of Otto's irresistible dance.
This turned the trio into a nightmare for local caravans, allowing them to turn any gathering of people into a drunken party. Food caravans were being ransacked and bastard children were being born right and left. A bounty was placed on them by the magic item's owner, which brings the party into it. The satyrs won't kill the party if they fail, but they might end up without clothes and magic items.
In my party's case, they failed, and while they soothed their sore egos the satyrs took over a village and made it into a nightly party and converted the entire populous to the worship of Olidamara (god of wine). The party DID eventually kill them, but not before the village women were popping out Pipers(half satyrs).

So the folks over at Overly Sarcastic Productions pointed out that Pan being dead was probably a mistake because someone overheard the cult of Zagreus.

Tamuz, not Zagreus. Not that there wasn't overlap, since the mythology had a vague divide between the mainstream folks who didn't wanna talk about all those death gods 'cause they're 3spooky5us, and the Orphic cults that were all *about* the spooky death gods, but the story is very specifically tied to Tamuz, a mortal who died and came back.

Yep! From what I’m aware, this guy probably heard a cult of Tammuz say “Tammuz the all great is dead” because Tammuz died and goes to the Underworld so they were probably celebrating that holiday. Killing their own clan, being BBEG material, yet due to their nature and cunning charisma the Players don't suspect anything until it's too late. The satyrs dance and sing their way into the camp, and at first take random actions against each of the party members, including trying to kiss them, offering them drinks, hitting them with the club before dancing off, or yelling out of them drunkenly. If the party engages, then they have a big party. If the party attacks, a few of the satyrs fight them while the rest join together and sing and play there pan pipes in harmony, imposing one of the pan pipe affects at a much higher DC or animating trees and rocks like the spell animate objects. That pan is dead thing may have been a misunderstanding about another god Tammuz. His followers were hear saying Tammuz, the All Great is dead, and since All is Pan in Greek as well as a gods name, the people who hears it thought they were telling someone named Tammuz that the god Pan was dead.

This is a very different kind of satyr the one I'm playing.
She's called Cassiopeia and she died 10,000 years ago, long before the Calamity (CotN campaign)
She was brought back to life and is super fucking depressed about the loss of not only her wife, but her entire world.
She wants to die, but the person who brought her back won't let her stay dead, as the thing that killed her the first time is still a problem to be dealt with.
She has no party in her anymore

In all honesty, Pan, despite all his antics, is only average for a Greek god. Zeus, Poseidon, Hermes, Apollo, they all bad.
Pretty much any interaction between a mortal and a god, male or female or hermaphroditus, turned out poorly for the mortal.
"What's that? Zeus forced himself on you? Well, here's a curse to go along with it." -Every interaction Hera has had with any of Zeus's flings.

Satyr Plays are not tragedies. Greek Comedy is a very specific genre, so even though Satyr Plays are comic, they couldn't be called comedies. Greek Tragedies were presented in competition as a trilogy + a satyr play (four plays total). The satyr play was the comic relief after a long day of heavy tragic catharsis. It was usually thematically linked to the tragic trilogy, but the chorus were always dressed as satyrs being lewd and goofy. Most often, it was a retelling of a myth but with satyrs and fart jokes. The only surviving satyr play is 'Cyclops' by Euripides, which retells the story from the Odyssey ('Nobody blinded me!'). The tragic trilogy that the play was linked to is lost. Btw, while you can read 'Cyclops' by Euripides today, I wouldn't recommend it. I recommend 'Medea' and 'Bacchae'. If you want real funny, read Aristophanes' plays, my favorites are 'Lysistrata' and 'The Frogs'.

@@tarvoc746 Not sure which myths you're referring to, but AFAIK Ouranos got castrated and then just didn't really do much, rather than being killed. He was apparently present at the Gigantomachy too.
Kronos was locked in Tartarus, not killed, no?
I'm not sure Asclepius was considered a god in the myths in which he dies, at least before his death; he's described as the god of medicine, but also has a mortal mother, except for in some versions in which Apollo is his lone parent; some random redditors claim he was deified _after_ death, which wouldn't be surprising, but dunno if they have any real source for that.
Atlas is a weird one, because the myths that mention him being petrified (which is I assume what you're referring to) mention him as a Sheppard (or in Ovid's version as a king, but eh, this is Greek mythology, not Roman propaganda-hatefiction), but I _assume_ it's meant to be the titan, in which case that'd probably count

@@Zeppongola Tartaros is the Underworld, I'd argue being locked there is functionally the same as being dead. Also Ouranos died from the castration in some versions.

    • @Zeppongola
      @Zeppongola 3 місяці тому +1

@@tarvoc746 IMO there's a difference between just relocating to the underworld and actually getting killed (I don't think immortality would mean anything for the former, hence Hades and Persephone being able to come and go, but presumably neither would die from getting stabbed), but to each their own.
Fairo about Ouranos then; there sure are a lot of variations on the myths. Wouldn't be too surprised if some didn't really ascribe any particular immortality other than longevity to them, or perhaps made it a "only gods can kill gods" dynamic, whereas others went with the "immortality can be sacrificed or transferred, but is otherwise absolute" one

I am pretty sure Pan was Thracian god first, just like Dionisius which was Thracian as well and Aphrodite which is speculated to be a version of Mesopotamian Ishtar. Then Pan got his hairy behind appropriated, as a demigod or minor deity (most likely he and Dionisius were the same god for the Thracians) of sort and got destroyed by Appolo, just like Achelous, which is another demigod/minor deity (and quite literally and figuratively horny ) that got wasted by Heracles.

Pan isn't dead, that is a misconception that came from a misunderstanding. A group of sailors were saying "Thamoús panmégas téthnēke" which because Pan is a prefix meaning "All" it could translate as "Thamous, Pan the Great is Dead" or "Thamous the ALL GREAT is Dead" so the Greeks heard this and thought they were hearing a conversation where they were telling somebody named Thamous that the Great God Pan is Dead, when really it was the Cult of Thamous or Tammuz a Shepherd from Mesopotamian Mythology who banged Ishtar and then died which was then Localized into Greece as Adonis and Aphrodite.

Personally I actually really like Satyrs as villians to move away from evil wizard 9453. Watch Overly Sarcastic Productions video on how Dionysus (who diverged from Pan in worship) was once a god of madness and excess instead of just parties. So in my version of the Feawild Pan is the goatman party god who's endless rollicking across the wildlife like a natural disaster rather than fun and he is extremely capricious to deal with. Also a god of wild places. So you could go full send and have Pan be a villian who intends to level all of civilization in one apocalyptic super party.
