My roommate from college was a music therapy major. I am a music educator. Music used as therapy is amazing. Her research was in dementia patients. She would play old songs and hymns. Non-verbal patients would occasionally “return” from dementia and sing or hum along. Once she played hymns for a lady who nurses told her was a Christian. She said the non-verbal lady quoted a verse from Psalms while she played hymns. God is great and music is some of our last retained memories for dementia patients.
My grandmother was completely locked down by dementia and my mother would bathe her. One day my mother started singing, "Daisy, daisy, give me your answer do" (A Bicycle Built for Two) and Grannie unlocked dramatically and sang along with her. They would sing song after song and when the bath was over Grannie went into complete lockdown again.
My grandmother had dementia for years (RIP) but when we sat her at a piano she could play classic church hymns like she was young again ❤ the way her hands moved and her knowing her favorite hymns brought all of us so much joy ❤
@@jimbtv thank you for sharing, I was privileged to work In a care home as a very young women. I also experienced this. One lady was ussally very sad and confused. One morning she was mumbling what I relised was the Lord's prayer and I came over and prayed with her, I then sung hynm after hynm as I cleaned her room, she was smiling and joyfully the whole time and sung along a bit.
My dad was a semipro opera singer, and died two years ago from brain cancer. Even when his awareness and memory regressed he was still able to recall music and sing along. Music is a beautiful gift of God to the human soul. It confirms to us that we are not mere bodies with souls, or souls trapped in bodies, but will one day be perfectly united in body and spirit as Christ will be with His bride.
I have been married to a Certified Music Therapist with a Masters+ for over thirty years. There has been serious scientific research that shows a definite neurological benefit to music therapy beyond the emotional benefits. There may be a few practitioners who attribute additional benefits to some of the new age practices, but that is not the core of music therapy. There were times when my wife chose not to participate in some sessions offered at conferences being led in the New Age direction. As Melissa said, use discernment and pray for your friends that they be guided by the Holy Spirit as well.
Music is sound, vibrations, etc. What one does with it is the key. Music has many benefits, it's talked about in the Bible and is a form of worship. But if music has a certain vibration, I think it could lead one to trances and ill meditation reflections. So as said, ask God for wisdom/discernment. If you get funny 'vibes,' then that is not the music for you. (For instance, 'heavy metal could have some demonic components.) But sound is generic. It's how it's put together (making music) and what it's being used for that makes the difference.
I’m surprised this didn’t come up in her response. I’d say that there is biblical grounds for using music as a therapeutic tool, especially if used to praise and worship God
@@vikikins23Probably because an evil spirit was the problem. Spiritually speaking we don’t know what’s behind a lot of disorders nor do we know if the spiritual powers in the Bible are the same as or different from various mental illnesses. All we have is scholarly speculation as to how that relationship works fully. I think that’s why it’s best not to bring it up.
@@vikikins23 There's a difference in music being used therapeutically and formal Music Therapy in that the latter approaches a client/patient with an intended determination to improve a situation or reach a certain goal through a process of assessment, treatment plan with specific goals, the actual execution of that plan, and, if it's a shorter-term process (e.g., the use of music to regain hand strength after surgery), summarizing the treatment, and discharge. Walking and running are excellent exercise, and undoubtedly, good for the body and heart in many ways. Many people walk and gain benefits from it. But the average walker/runner is not usually setting out, measuring their heart rate, obtaining blood counts, oxygen levels, measuring their gross motor flexibility, and other tracking. A professional would do those things. It doesn't mean the runner isn't benefiting from their running. However, what they are doing would be different from, say, how a Sports Medicine professional would approach the same activity.
Please thumbs up this comment so Melissa can see it! ❤️ There is a whole branch of new age music therapy referred to as "sound healing," and it is definitely worth making a whole video debunking it, because some claim that the method used to figure out these "healing frequencies" is of biblical origin. The best key words to start your search with are "solfeggio healing frequencies," "sound bath," "healing tuning forks," "528 frequency " "432hz music, " "crystal singing bowl healing." I was lured pretty darn deep into the new age for all of my 20s, dated a yoga teacher who later became a "sound healer" and would absolutely love to chat with you and share my firsthand experiences with you, because "sound healing" is honestly a whole rabbit whole full of crazy theories that are believable when you're already convinced about energies and frequencies in general. Plus, there's been at least one study that shows possible health improvements, which stops people from digging further. Thanks as always for your fantastic content. Your videos are so enjoyable and well thought out. ❤️
I can't think of any tone frequency mentioned in the Bible. Ive got a Tibetan singing bowl made of brass. Its a neat thing but just mechanical resonance.
I am definitely not supportive of all the new age spiritual things however listening to music, different types of sounds, and sound frequencies is not wrong it can actually help you mentally.
RN in training here🙋♀️. Music therapy is an intervention we use to relieve pain, stress and anxiety nonpharmacologically. Like you said, a person can choose to elevate and idolize anything, but there have been a ton of scientific studies completed to show that many people respond positively to music and music therapy may allow for individuals, especially those with chronic pain and conditions, to use an alternative to or in conjuction with medications. That being said, while it's easy to idolize and elevate anything above God, as a Christian worship is incredibly powerful. I would go on a limb to say Christians are taking part in music therapy through worship of the creator. It's not the music itself that is cleansing and healing, but the closeness and intimacy we feel praising and pouring love onto Him in response to the music. God gave us music as a unique way to connect with him. It invokes feelings we can't rightly express. One of my favorite verses in Romans, (and I'm paraphrasing here), notes that the Spirit intercede with groanings too deep for words because we don't have the words ourselves. Music and worship is so often that intercession for me. I can pour myself out to Him, despite the pain and suffering I may be experiencing and praise Him wholeheartedly. That is therapeutic, but He is doing the healing. I have yet to find a person, christian or not who doesn't respond to music. It's used in the Bible again and again. There's an ENTIRE book devoted to it! God does not highlight anything unless we are to pay special attention to it. So long story long, while anything can easily be cultivated into new age thinking, Music therapy itself is not a new age practice. It's not a magic cure to pain and chronic illness but it has been significantly proven from extensive research that it eases patients stress response in a therapeutic way to better manage the effects of those things. Christians are walking proof of this. There's a reason Music speaks to all of us. Our God is an artist. He is THE creator, so while music to the average person lowers stress hormones and manages physiologic symptoms, He uses it to speak to us and intercede where we don't have the words to repent adequately. Where words fail music speaks from our innermost being, the Spirit himself! Music, specifically worship, from a Christian is a love song and heals our spiritual wounds which gives us the strength to persist with our physical wounds. After all it's by His wounds that we are healed and we'll leave our physical wounds behind when we ourselves ascend to the Father to be fully healed ourselves and there we will spend eternity doing what? The Bible tells us we will spend it WORSHIPPING the King! I would spread a word of caution to those who minimize the power of Music. While everything in this broken world is subject to abuse, by demonizing the gifts God has given us we liken ourselves a Pharisee.
Yes like art therapy or dance therapy. Something that helps people express feelings work through trauma. Given my experience with conventional therapy, I struggled to think that any kind of therapy is useless without the power of the Holy Spirit. I'd use dance therapy on my own terms as I used to be a dancer. It has helped me. But it was led by Jesus.
Same with lots of different bodywork modalities. Rolfing, Alexander Technique. There's a big overlap with the new age, and lots of practitioners are new age. But doesn't mean all of it is. It's just something to get your body in alignment.
I am someone with significant health issues and CPTSD. There is quite a bit of work showing that those who suffer CPTSD often avoid music as a whole because of connected memories. There is music I do well with and music that triggers me because of memories. What I don’t understand is why some meditation music triggers major anxiety and others don’t. I can’t say I have any memories that are connected to that. There seems to be no rhyme and reason or consistency with the types that trigger me.
I have MS and while listening and worshipping my Lord I do experience a different kind of pain relief and comfort. I get the same feeling through deep prayers. ❤🎉 Thank you for going into nursing and I pray for your and your patients health and well-being ❤
My Mormon stake president told me to quit studying the gospel so much and go home and iron my husband’s shirts. True story. Beginning of the end. Sorry I think I meant to put this comment in a different video. But it’s true.
yikes. i remember when my mom had cancer in her hip she still tended the churches garden, and our pastor at the time reemed her out for wearing shorts to do so instead of pants or a long dress true story they're just people. doesn't matter the religion doesn't matter the role. just people
I am a piano teacher and I have looked into becoming a music therapist. It is extremely involved and expensive. The basic requirements are essentially having a minimum of a bachelor's in music plus a masters in psychology. It is also helpful to play at least two to three instruments.. Then once you are thoroughly educated, there are not necessarily jobs for being a music therapist. The person would need to start their own business. For me personally, I have been battling a disease called Myalgic Encephalomyolitis Chronic Fatigue Syndrome MECFS. Playing a variety of music has improved my condition. Listening to piano ragtime music provides me with energy. Listening to Ravel's, Pavane to a Dead Princess, is extremely cathartic and has helped to overcome depression. Now as I listen to the same piece of music I find it almost joyful. In other words, it has helped me to change my mood, my mind and my temperament. Almost a type of repentance. Amazing!!! And the result, I am now about 80 percent well🎉. Yes, God does answer prayers of healing...I was once legally blind in my left eye. Found the right doctor to do 2 corrective surgeries, now I am 20/20 in that eye. May God continue to bless you and your family 🙏. Sister Monique 🙂🌷🙏🕊️
@@MelissaDougherty Now you know three people with ME/CFS. However, sadly music of all kinds increase my pain and fatigue symptoms rather than helps them like Monique's. Though I'm giving my body a break currently, I have a habit to listen to one worship song a day. I do so out of love for the Lord and a desire to worship him. The lyrics help me do that despite the pain. Sometimes I can't finish the song, so I'll try to finish by reading the words as a poem. I am aware of other people with ME/CFS who are very sound sensitive like I am. It goes to show how wide the spectrum is with this illness. In regard to music therapy being new age or not, I imagine the need will be to examine on an individual therapist basis. I know of someone who calls what she is promoting music therapy but bases it on the energies and frequencies of the universe as the healing properties. She wanted to teach me all about it, but after reading her website describing her philosophy, this new age mindset was evident so I declined. That doesn't mean all music therapist have the same philosophy, but I don't know any to say there are ones who don't have questionable ideas. Good advice you gave to ask lots of questions!
I have a question. My father was a (lapsed) Catholic. After he died, my mother gave me his rosary, which is a beautiful rosewood rosary. Is it something I shouldn't keep, or can I keep it because it's beautiful. I'm a born again Christian, so I don't pray the rosary. Thank you.
@@dianafleenor939 I am sorry for your condition, but I don't agree with you about connecting music therapy with the new age in that manner. Of course it can be manipulated in that sense (everything can be manipulated) but in its essence it is not a new age. God gave us physics to understand His gift to us - frequencies and energy (among other gifts). That doesn't mean that "the universe" is healing us, but it is God healing us through His gifts to us, we just have to learn how to use it. Besides being a musician, I have a MA in journalism. My MA thesis was about deconstruction of propaganda manipulation, which includes sound manipulation as well (manipulation through music and frequencies in general).
@@JSapp-wr2vc Dear Sir, I grew up in the Roman Catholic Church and years later, received the gift of the Holy Spirit. I used to pray the rosary. To keep the beautiful keep sake of your family rosary....please do!!! It would be terrible to give it away or throw it away....... Doing my own research, praying the Our Father is Biblical. Praying the Glory Be is Biblical. Praying the first portion of the Hail Mary is Biblical. The second portion of the Hail Mary is almost Biblical......most Protestants will state that praying to saints and Mary is not Biblical. Most Roman Catholics will say it's fine. It's simply like asking a friend to pray with you who is not physically there. It's simply dependent upon your relationship with God and your family..... it's completely personal. It's a decision based upon your conscience . God bless you and your family. Miss Monique 🙂🌷🙏🕊️
I really appreciated your answer re: manifesting and healing. I’ve never been even remotely associated with New Age/New Thought, but as you were describing manifesting I realised that the way I have been praying for a dear friend is rooted in the desire to control her situation and get her the outcome I want to see, not a holy desire for our good God to do His will and conform me to it. Thankful for you ❤
I'm a charismatic Calvinist ;P My very best friend is a brilliant, devoted lover of Jesus and she is an Arminian. There is a level of Christian and emotional maturity required to thrive wherever you're planted though. We attend different churches. I couldn't thrive where she is and she wouldn't prefer my church. As long as they get the dogma right......Jesus worth lifted up... not a man centered church. Pray pray pray.... the Lord will use the word and his people to confirm his leading you. It is no sin to ask him to confirm his will......Gideon did so, humbly. God repeated himself over and over to Israel..... He knows our weakness and our need to know his voice to honor him.
Oh God, no. Not Mike Winger. I like him for the first 4 or 5 videos when i first discovered him, but then, very soon after, realized, he is ssooooo long-winded and takes such along time "setting things up" and "framing" whatever is being talked about, that by the time he is done doing that, he can make it say pretty much whatever he wants to. Alan Parr is better with many videos between 6 and 15 minutes.
@@dabbler1166I think that’s a good thing. Then people can see his thought process. I tend to agree with him, but when I don’t, I can easily see how he came to that conclusion. He’s like a book with footnotes vs. one with a single paragraph on each page with pictures. All depends on how you like to get your information.
Man... Very solid talk! Dont shy away from more lengthy explanations I think thats what people need in regards to some of these matters. I know I enjoy them. Thanks Melissa!
It took me a year to leave a church with Hillsong music. But I did it. Now Im in a Reformed Baptist church. We don't use the 1689 technically, but the preaching and music is laced with Calvinist doctrine.
Hello! A a believer and retired music educator, I can testify to the legitimacy of music therapy. May I recommend you look up Ken Medema, a musician and brother in the Lord who wrote a wonderful piece called "Moses". He is/was also a music therapist. It would be great if you could interview him. I'm sure he could have much to share about the power of music! Also, I think a pertinent scripture passage on this subject is 1 Samuel 16:23. There is much in this passage, but all I'll say is that musical power like this can only come from the skill of a Godly performer.
Llove your balanced & fair takes! Great to hear you call out some Christian's tendencies to be paranoid! Sometimes I can't help saying "I'm not superstitious " in responding to their hypersensitivity to saying certain words.
My 15 year old son is in music therapy for his sensory disorder. He has been going for 3 years and it really has given him an outlet to better deal with everyday life. I don't know how all music therapy works but the way ours works is that my son learns how to play an instrument while he talks with his "teacher/therapist" He plays the drums and some weeks he just plays the whole time, some weeks he talks half the time and plays the rest of the time, and some weeks he talks most of the time. They also have a sensory room he can use before or after his sessions. For our family this has been a blessing from God! It's not spiritual or Christian in any way but God is working through it to help my son. In fact my son has shared with his therapist about our church and Jesus and he was very open to hearing about it so it's not hostile to Christianity. But like I said this is true of our place I don't know about other places. I had not hear about music therapy till a friend said her daughter was in it and thought it would be good for my son and that was only 3 years ago.
that's kinda how mine worked. My music teacher in HS was a music therapist. His mistake was asking a sperg "how's life treating you?" and id tell him for the whole period. But it was helpful for my stressors in school.
Thank you! Im someone thats been in chronic pain along with lupus and fibromyalga. GODS GRACE IS SUFFICIENT for me!. He has taught ne so much through my pain. I trust him and thats enough for me! 😊
Wow. I'm so blessed to hear someone else have a balanced view like this in regards to the things God has made. I've been saying this for years. Someone took stretching thousands of years ago and spiritualised it into Yoga. Crystals have become a means to transcendence instead of beautiful testimonies of God's amazing handiwork and so on. Yes, we must be on our guard, but we don't need to be sin-sniffers either. (That's what I call people who are hyper vigilant about everything being wrong).
Great word Melissa! A few years back I started dating an awesome sister that was in the word of faith movement. I didn't know at the time much about her other than she was a believer. Mutual friends really did think highly of her. After a date night, she told me that she believed that we directly ushered in healing according to our faith, based on Isaiah 53:4-5. It caused quite the argument, and not long after I broke off our relationship. It didn't matter what scriptures I used to help her understand my walk, She simply had it figured out. I still pray for her to this day, as she married just months after our split. We must be on guard even with other believers.
A little addition from my perspective to the question about leaving the church: you sometimes just have to make a decision. Pray and go or pray and stay. When I heard someone say this, it really helped me personally, because especially with some (hyper)calvinist background things can get very passive. You got some responsibility and freedom within this from God. And clearly you are already careful about not being careful enough ;)
When my great grandma was in hospice she was totally out of it and basically just writhing around in pain. We visited her and I played hymns on my violin- it was the only time at the end that she was slightly coherent and wasn't in pain any more. So many memories are tied to music, and it can definitely help with pain and dementia!
When my mom was on hospice with cancer, there was a music therapy harpist who came and played for her and it relaxed her so much. It was wonderful. I agree with you... all good things can be contaminated by humans... and THAT is the main thing imo that we need to keep in mind. As Melissa mentioned, just watch for anything which becomes an idol.
I love that they did that for her! I only ever heard of music therapy in the last maybe 10-15 years. But I haven't looked into it in detail to discern any "New Age-y" issues that may or may not be involved. If it wasn't anything like that, I would have loved to study and be in that profession! My two favorite things: helping people and music. Sounds like a dream profession to me. I am glad your mom had that comfort. I hope someone does that for me someday.
I originally had gone to college to become a music therapist. The curriculum and discipline is very detailed and scientific to give a framework in order to perfect it to an art to help others who can benefit from the treatments. The therapy can help physically heal by connecting movements for playing instruments to the muscle memory needed from the brain, or it can be used as an auditory means for emotional growth and development.
I am a music teacher and have used music therapy techniques for my special needs and geriatric students. Using piano to help students to build motor skills by isolating individual fingers is a great way to help low motor students. Also learning to play an instrument has shown positive effects on memory loss in elderly students. I think the idea the music therapy is New Age could stem from the fact that we interact with the arts differently. Music is a multi stimulus tool. We read it, hear it, and perform it all at once. This is high cognitive function all at once. We also find that (similar to smells) we tend to link music to experiences we had in life. We remember our song at our wedding so when we hear it we think of that day and our significant other. It isn't New Age, it is cognitive association. I think we need to acknowledge that the arts is a powerful tool that was built into the fabric of being human. Look at the Psalms, the artistry of the tabernacle and the temple, the use of incense, and even the dancing that was spoken of in the Bible. All of these things were made to glorify God by bringing us closer together. Sorry for the long answer.
I work LTC, and with a lot of people with stroke and dementia. Music activities different parts of the brain than speech. Sometimes non-verbal residents can still sing. Hymns are very commonly used as many older persons are familiar with them (especially Amazing Grace) even if they didn't attend church as an adult. I have never seen anything new age about music therapy in the LTC setting.
I have not seen anything New Age in the LTC setting either, but I think it's due to the clientele being served. Most of them would be older and less into the New Age. New Thought, etc. types of practices that become more popular after the times they would have experienced their primary musical influence.
Thank you, for your videos. I tend to binge-watch them when I see you. I usually come to YT for a specific reason, but today's topic "struck a chord!" :)
On music therapy: According to Bob Seger, "I like that old-time rock and roll. That kinda music just soothes the soul." When I am down emotionally, and I hear a song that I like, it lifts me up!
Thank you, Melissa for another good session. Just a word for the brother/sister considering leaving a reformed church. I had exactly the same experience. I, too, found that the TULIP contradicts my beliefs, based on much study and deep prayer. It took me 2 1/2 years to reach a decision. Once I determined to go, the peace that washed over me was complete and immediate. I, too, left in a loving, non-confrontational manner. It was hard to say farewell, but vital for my spiritual health. God bless.
I have to continually monitor myself that I don't get too caught up on any new or trending strategies having to do with healing, it just seems to endlessly fascinate and entertain me. I want Jesus to remain my first & best resort for any healing.
my late pastor, Dr Gene Scott used to say "... check any commentary you want. Check me out." "Don't park your brains at the door of the sanctuary door" and if he made a mistake {which was seldom} he'd admit it and apoogize.
I did one semester of a BMusTh in the early 2000s. It was interesting and has a pretty strong scientific basis, as others have said. I will caution everyone about the program, though. I was in North Vancouver, BC, so that’s probably a big reason why, but the program I was in was very New Agey. It’s more “vibes-based” than counselling, so even with the sound basis you can easily get sucked into weird side trips.
I have a family member who is no longer a christian. She talks so much "new thought" ideology, manifesting, being co-creators with God.😮Twist scripture for personal rewards
Thank you for answering my question. I loved your response and I agree with you. I think one truth that you didn't touch on is how our source comes from God and without Him, I can do nothing. I continue to enjoy your messages and find inspiration in them. Keep up the good work and as always, you are in my prayers.
As an accomplished pianist and singer, I am here to say that music is indeed therapeutic. We also know that in the Bible, young David played for King Solomon. I don’t know anything about how music therapy is used. I personally don’t think the unbiblical Calvinist soteriology is a secondary issue. I would leave a church that adheres to it.
I think some may confuse music therapy with sound healing. Sound healing is an eastern practice and includes frequencies to open your mind. This is used in conjunction with meditation.
I am a Physical Therapist who works with adults and we very often use music for people with Parkinson's disease - It is amazing how it assists with movement, energy, cognition and mood. When you can have someone move to a "beat" /rhythm there are real changes that can take place in the brain (see scholarly articles). Motor, social, cognitive/communication can all be effected by music. I see many people with other disorders who when I "sing" (not the opera - but like with a beat or rhythm) it helps with walking and motor skills; I've seen patients with Alzheimer's come alive with music - this isn't 100% but it can be a helpful/powerful tool. I can and do "use" music sometimes to manipulate (in a good way) mood/cognition/motor and make people more receptive to the interventions I have planned to benefit them. Why do you think Bars, restaurants, stores and Gyms play music? It's a way to manipulate, just like the dim lighting in places etc. - We are sensory beings! This is why we should be careful how we place music at the "center" of our "worship" - Mood is changed, people move their body etc... not that those are bad things. Add the contemplative words, or other poor theology and we could possibly be more receptive to the ideology within the music or what comes next after the music is played. Music can be a wonderful way to sing praises to God! Lets focus on His Word and let music be a lovely way to praise Him without being manipulated (in a bad way)! LAB
Music can be extremely important for different ailments. My dad is a musician and he would take his guitar to visit a friend who was in a nursing home with dementia. Familiar songs were the only thing that sparked his memory.
I don't know the kind of music therapy they are talking about, but I worked with a dementia patient and the medical staff used music therapy to enhance memory and communication. People will forget everything but never forget songs. So music can be used to enhance their treatment. And music was involved in helping my daughter on the autism spectrum when she could not speak, but she could sing! Music helped with her social anxiety. We used music to enhance her speech therapy and she speaks soo well and reads and even teaching her lil sis to read now, and she just tuned 6. I couldn't even read at 6 myself😅
I have done the this similar to the "casting of lots." I took a penny and was deciding who I should vote fore. I realized since doing this, like some things are just describing instead of what we should do. Like you said descriptive and prescriptive.
For myself, I wanted to leave my church over changing my beliefs about women and their ability to preach. But on taking time to really examine my heart on it, I realized I needed to stay. I'm in a wonderful church that's passionate about serving others and preaching Jesus. They have many different beliefs that members have, and keep strife low. I admire that and I understand that it's worth it, to keep on preaching and helping our community. I think it's so close to the rapture, I don't need to relocate my faith community. But I know that some are called to, after prayer.
The problem at hand is not with Calvinism or the doctrine of salvation, but with the creature's resistance to the idea of a Holy God and His sovereign will over theirs.
To the people ragging on Reformed theology in this comments section, did you actually WATCH this video? Did you HEAR what she said? Some of you need to check your hearts because, by your words, you seem really bitter. Smh.
This explanation of healing blessed my soul! I have seen people who loved a friend not let her express her struggles when she was in hospice and close to the end of her life- because they perceived it as word curses. It grieved my soul. Another thing word of faith teaching does is cause church hurt and some folks walk away from the church and their faith. Jesus is the source of all healing and He wants us to stand and trust Him. I’m so grateful for your ministry!
I always use David Guzik for my studying 📖 I attend Calvary Chapel and I am so grateful that God has given us so many gifted and devoted teachers within our church community.
Not sure if anyone else has posted this, but music therapy can be very useful for the elderly population experiencing alzheimer's/dementia since music is strongly connected to specific memories. It's also been found useful for kiddos on the autism spectrum.
It feels good to listen to music that you like (depending on the music), petting or caring for animals can also feel good and be "therapeutic," while things like proper training/exercise (both lifting/resistance and cardio.) is a much more potent, efficacious proven therapeutic practice for most people, as is a healthy diet, sufficient sleep, etc. All these things can be used with other forms of therapy as suited to the individual, but, of course, the ultimate healing and therapy comes from the Great Physician, the High Priest, the Lord Almighty, the Creator, God!
While i grew up in a disfunctional family with a violent father on thingni can appreciate aboit him is that he shared his love of rock collecting with us. We dug deep into a flood way to get Selenite Crystals and then he would make jewlery out of them, just to name ine adventure. But With the new age has spoiled it for me as i would love to wear jewlery mad from God's beautifully designed rocks and semi precious gems, i hesitate for two reasons. I dont want to patronize a new age imtended buainess and i dont want people to aasume I am into the new age practices now aasociated with crystala and gems.
Wear your lovely jewelery and give Glory to our Father and Maker, the amazing artist that He is. Then, if you are asked questions, give them the Gospel. The Holy Spirit might lead you wonderfully.
Thank you so much for putting words to ideas that float around in my head! I was involved in new age practices as a Christian, thinking the two could live together. This led me to become a member of an NAR/word of faith/prosperity gospel type church. In hindsight, the choices I made make so much sense considering what I was involved with, but at the time I didn't see it. I so appreciate the work you and many others are doing to bring these issues to light. Keep up the important good work!
My daughter was born with low muscle tone and had many developmental delays. She learned how to talk through music therapy, mostly with the song "Old McDonald had a Farm". I am so thankful she was able to have that therapy!
I found a post on Marcia Montenegro's Facebook page talking about new age ideas about healing frequencies in general. She refers to music with one statement: "This is not related to the idea that certain music may be soothing or calming. This is addressing the idea of healing with frequencies or by changing frequencies." I also read a few articles more specific to music therapy which address something called "Solfeggio Frequencies" which the author indicates needs to be distinguished from legit music theory. I'll link the articles in comments below for anyone interested in reading further on this topic.
Hi Melissa, love the Q&A. on Q 2, healing manifestation. I was in a prosperity gospel church, which I did not know for a while, and they were very intwined with the word of faith theology. They would tell you to declare, no negatives, and if you werent healed it was because of your faith. They would say; God doesnt want you sick and being poor is a curse. Psalm 119: 71 It was good for me to be afflicted that I might learn your decrees. and v 75 I know Lord, that your law are righteous, and in faithfulness you have afflicted me. This will get you some serious stares !
Great Q&A today! I greatly appreciate your wisdom and discernment on all the topics today. I am a continuist that went to a "word of faith" type church for many years. It wasn't until I started, systematically, reading the Bible from cover to cover that I realized how many verses were used out of context. I then started listening to bible teachers from different camps. Initially, this helped me get centered, but then I went into the opposite "ditch" from watching too many cessationist/calvinist heresy hunters. I have been attending an independent Baptist church for 4.5 years. They are very open to the move of the Holy Spirit and the preaching is sound. However, we can't be used in the church where we are gifted because we have to be members. We can't agree to the confession of faith concerning certain gifts of the Holy Spirit not for today and once saved always saved. These are secondary issues, but are weighing heavily on us now. We live this church but have started splitting our time with a nondenominational church. It's so hard to find a Charismatic church that isn't whack-a-doodle (NAR, Word of Faith, etc.).
I’m a trauma therapist. The left right panning in music biologically calms the nervous system much like walking, running, or playing a musical instrument. Our brains calm and heal by connecting the left and right brains thereby helping the L and R side communicate with each other. The flooding of cortisol to the center of the brain due to trauma blocks this process. Trauma is stored in the R, emotional side of the brain. Without some type of L-R processing, it stays stuck there.
Classical Music is calming , old hymns are edifying while CCM isn't Calvinism come in many degrees, but I lean to Free Grace theology which offers Salvation to All in this life through the Gospel of CHRIST by Faith.
Great QnA! More descriptive/prescriptive explanations, please. Every time I think I've got it, I read something else in the Bible and doubt what I thought I understood.
Music therapy is used in hospitals & in educational settings. As a retired music educator, I’ve worked with a music therapist whom our school district hired to help our special needs students. I see no concerns for “new age”.
I am a Christian music therapist and have practiced for a number of years. I studied music therapy at a Christian university. Where I live (in Canada) you need at least a Bachelor's level (4 year) degree in music therapy to practice as a music therapist. In addition to that, you need to complete an accreditation process through our professional association. It is a fairly well-researched profession and the emphasis is on finding the most effective ways to harness active and passive music experiences to benefit people with a wide variety of challenges. In my career I have worked mostly with children and adults who have intellectual or learning disabilities, autism, or ADHD. I have designed music programs to support their social skills, self-esteem, emotional expression, attention span, learning, etc. Music therapy is particularly helpful with people who have communication difficulties or are otherwise difficult to reach (for example, people with dementia, as many here have already noted). They may not be receptive to speech/language, but music accesses a different neural pathway. It is a fascinating field and can take many, many different forms. I have never seen it as new age or used it that way, and in my experience, most music therapists are not practicing from a new age perspective. But I suppose there may be some who are. There are different schools of thought within music therapy, just as there are different schools of thought in the field of psychology. There are also people who may use music or sounds for different things and call it "music therapy," but they are not accredited as music therapists by our professional association. Misrepresentation of our field is fairly common. I have recently decided to leave my career as music therapist, at least for the time being, for other reasons. One being practical - it's very difficult to make a stable income. The other being personal/spiritual - the pursuit of musical skills to become a better music therapist became a sort of idol (and a source of grief) in my life. I have never felt that I could measure up to the high standards of musicianship that are placed on people who practice music therapy. I am no longer sure if this is the path God wants for me. But my decision has nothing to do with it being new age. 🙂
FYI the flickering in your light vase has to do with the frame rate of your video and frequency flicker rate of the light. There are lights 'dj lighting' that you can tune to the video. Just a tip from a media pro who loves your channel. ;p😎❤
"The musicians needed additional training before entering the ' facilities'..." Very interesting. I'm a primary source on this matter. I hold a Master's in Music Education and had a life career in education for grades K-12 in public school. My colleagues and I performed annually at the Bath, NY Veteran's Hospital and Domiciliary for all their military patients, residents, staff, and administrators. We were highly motivated to pour our hearts out for the eggnog, and sugar cookies waiting for us just around the corner, or elevator ride to every performance. Ah, Yes... fellow 9-10 year old coworkers and I performed Christmas Carols in our brass choir receiving thunderous applause, tears of love and joy and sadness on the faces of broken men carrying feelings too deep for words. Ours must have been an exceptional training program. In the matter of only a few months, we transformed dented old brass, spit, and valve oil into a thing of beauty. Music Therapy ALL AROUND!! And the cost? Mom or Dad's time. A car drive across town. Always Free Gratis from a dedicated music teacher who was never remunerated beyond 3:00 p.m. on school days. But, in the end.... Puppies and children grow up to be Dogs and Professionals. Sigh.... It ain't heaven.
Your work sounds beautiful and very touching. However, the emotions music elicits and formal Music Therapy are different processes. But God continue to bless your work!
David played the harp to soothe King Saul in I Samuel 16. Everything with any mass at all has what is called in physics a natural frequency. These masses interact with different frequencies and that interaction will be either resonant or dissonant. Sometimes resonance brings desired results and sometimes dissonance brings desired results. That there IS an affect is an objective reality, but what results are desired is completely subjective to numerous considerations.
I think there is a difference between music therapy and sound or music healing. The former is probably used for neuroplasticity, trauma, memory, and calming anxiety. I think new age and new thought practices use sound for frequency and vibrations to reach enlightenment, transcend something, or enact “shifts” in their bodies. Or that ohm thing that is used in transcendence practices.
I was in a word of faith denomination for decades and it messed me up. I kept hearing from people about how they prayed and declared and decreed and things happened. Meanwhile, I’m doing the same thing and I’m seeing nothing. I may think Andy Stanley is going down a wrong road but a few years ago I heard him say that the word of faith movement makes it a lot easier for people to walk away from Christianity altogether. I can attest to the truth of that statement. I was just about ready to leave the church and never go back. Andy’s words were very validating to me and helped me understand what the WoF movement had done to me and was doing to others.
I am pursing art therapy currently in college and I have knowlege on music therapy since art and music go hand to hand. Speaking from a christian, music therapy has a lot of science to back it up, it is based the physic of sound waves amd brain waves, nothong spiritual. Music therapy is based on how we psychologically react with how brain that affects our body biologically. An example is how we encode memories through music. If a student listens to the third movement of Beethoven moonlight sonata every time they study, their mind is going to associate the music with the study material. If Beethoven’s moonlight sonata is played doing the test, he/she will retrieve thoses memories of the material instantly. That’s why music therapy is used of dementia patients. That is just ONE scientific example. I can go on and on is detail music can increase or decrease certain hormone. I genuinely thing God created music for good and His glory, not to be worshipped or seen as some weird spiritual practice. Sorry if my English is bad but I hope I gave a good explanation of snippets of the beauty of the science of God’s creation of music.
My mom is a retired music therapist, with a masters in both music and clinical psychology. She worked with in a residential facility for young children who had been abused and neglected. No one had ever sang lullabies or nursery rhymes or anything to these kids, so that was part of her job and it helped them regulate their nervous systems from the trauma they had been through. She also worked with people in hospice care. As other comments mentioned, people with dementia and Alzheimer’s can have memories jogged by the music of their youth. People who couldn’t remember their loved ones names still knew all the words to their favorite gospel hymns. It’s not at all new-age bullshit, and it really pisses me off when people reduce it to that.
Sometimes I will listen to Thunderstorm sounds on youtube, but music no. I just started watching so not sure if you will mention it. David sang played the harp to King Saul to relieve him demonic oppression. 1 Sam 16:16
Sound Therapy and Music Therapy are quite different. I quit practising Sound Therapy when I got saved by the grace of God. I felt the Holy Spirit convicting me so I prayed for guidance. It became quite clear to me that I shouldn't be delivering Sound Therapy sessions anymore because the affects are inevitably altering a person's state of awareness and affecting their brainwave state. Furthermore, Sound Therapy is very much associated with New Age practices. Music Therapy is not New Age. Engaging with music and playing musical instruments can give a voice to those who can't express trauma verbally.
Therapy is a word we gloss over without full understanding. Therapy means that a person has a "behavior" that is in some way keeping them from some social standard. Further analysis would show that the individual believes something to be true that is causing the need for therapy. Scripture labels some of these beliefs like pride, guilt or any other labeled emotion generating condition. Therapy is the idea to take away one behavior and replace it with something else. With a goal of reintroducing the person back into society in a "healthy" way. In a way this folds neatly into your second question of manifesting. Can i seek therapy and manifest myself differently? In the end, without Jesus (A changed heart) then therapy is all we have. Chronically changing our behaviors for something more suitable for society.
Music therapy, as well as better learning with music (the so called "Mozart effect"), was a thing long before "the new age" was even mentioned anyhow. Music therapy is about healing with frequencies. Even tempo of the songs is important. Songs that we start to dance at are in cca 140 bmp tempo, which - if you divide it in 2, gives you an average (resting) hart rate. But people should be aware that it (music) can be used for manipulation as well. For example, songs that have amplified bass (funky songs mostly), are sexualizing people, because bass frequencies are "hitting" you from your feet up to your loins, etc.
Music therapy can be beautiful but like all things can be corrupted by the enemy. To me it gets kinda fishy when you look into frequency/resonance healing (basically saying certain vibrations and frequency can heal). It’s been a hot second since I researched it but this kind of healing practice dates back to ancient Egypt and Isis worship for healing. Beware how deep you go trying to heal without consulting God’s will and asking for Him to heal and direct you. Just my two cents on it😊❤
When my young grandkids sleepover, they want relaxing music at night to sleep. There are UA-cam channels that play music and put pretty pictures up so that it's relaxing. But most of them I find are all new age pictures to go along with the sounds. That type of music is New age. It's hard to describe the type of music they play, but if you look it up you'll see what I'm talking about. It's hard to try to find something that's not new age for children. But I keep searching even for myself I need soothing music to sleep.
Hello friends. I 100% agree that we are not healed by manifesting it, but can anyone explain or point me to a video that explains what Jesus meant when he said “Your faith has made you whole?” Years ago, I attended a church that taught it was our fault if we weren’t healed due to a lack of faith. While I was able to stand strong against certain WOF teachings at this church just by reading the scriptures, this one got me and caused me quite a bit of hurt, only because I had read in the Bible where Jesus said “be it unto you as you have believed” and “Thy faith has made you whole.” I’d love to understand a proper interpretation of these verses if anyone knows. Thank you and God bless.
We have “I Am” yoga at my church. Our yoga ministry is completely bathed in scripture & God. I haven’t had any issue with the way yoga is done at my church; it is not secular yoga. Recently, though, the I Am yoga team hosted an evening of sound healing. Whaaat? Supposedly there is science around this. I really wish you’d look into sound healing. Would greatly appreciate your perspective.
This is concerning to me. The very roots of yoga are based on Hinduism and Buddhist teachings. Nothing about it is for Jesus. Stretching isn’t sinful but these poses are literally done in yoga to bind oneself to Hindu deities. There’s no way Jesus can be connected to this practice. Again; stretching is one thing. Yoga is antithetical to Jesus. This opens up oneself to kundalini and deeper issues. Yoga is meant to bring about nirvana or in Hinduism - moksha.
There is something going on with some meditation music. In my experience, some of those recordings cause my anxiety to go through the roof for no explainable reason. Other tracks don’t bother me at all. It does make me wonder if there is a negative spiritual influence that causes my anxiety to skyrocket. So I make sure the music gets changed immediately. I don’t go into what I think is happening. People are who are into that stuff will gladly change it quickly if I tell them my anxiety is being triggered. The Calm app actually messes me up too. I really can’t draw any correlations between which tracks trigger me and which don’t.
(For instance, 'heavy metal could have some demonic components.)
But sound is generic. It's how it's put together (making music) and what it's being used for that makes the difference.
Music therapy, perhaps like when David played the harp for Saul when he was plagued by an evil spirit (1 Sam 16).
That’s what I was thinking as well
I thought about David as well
@@vikikins23 There's a difference in music being used therapeutically and formal Music Therapy in that the latter approaches a client/patient with an intended determination to improve a situation or reach a certain goal through a process of assessment, treatment plan with specific goals, the actual execution of that plan, and, if it's a shorter-term process (e.g., the use of music to regain hand strength after surgery), summarizing the treatment, and discharge.
The best key words to start your search with are "solfeggio healing frequencies," "sound bath," "healing tuning forks," "528 frequency " "432hz music, " "crystal singing bowl healing."
I was lured pretty darn deep into the new age for all of my 20s, dated a yoga teacher who later became a "sound healer" and would absolutely love to chat with you and share my firsthand experiences with you, because "sound healing" is honestly a whole rabbit whole full of crazy theories that are believable when you're already convinced about energies and frequencies in general. Plus, there's been at least one study that shows possible health improvements, which stops people from digging further.
Thanks as always for your fantastic content. Your videos are so enjoyable and well thought out. ❤️
Thank you! Yes I've heard of that. From what I understand, "music therapy" how it was postured in the question seems different.
I can't think of any tone frequency mentioned in the Bible. Ive got a Tibetan singing bowl made of brass. Its a neat thing but just mechanical resonance.
@@MelissaDoughertyhave you heard of Wholetones?
❤🎉 Thank you for going into nursing and I pray for your and your patients health and well-being ❤
Music isn't the focus of Church. It was the worship of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. That was the point. Not the music.
My Mormon stake president told me to quit studying the gospel so much and go home and iron my husband’s shirts. True story. Beginning of the end.
Sorry I think I meant to put this comment in a different video. But it’s true.
😮 wow!
Weird...and bossy.
yikes. i remember when my mom had cancer in her hip she still tended the churches garden, and our pastor at the time reemed her out for wearing shorts to do so instead of pants or a long dress
true story
they're just people. doesn't matter the religion doesn't matter the role. just people
@@junk3996 that is so sad.
What is a stake president? I know very little Mormonism
There's literally only one other person (who I adore) in this world that I know that has that condition. I felt your post in my bones.
Thankful for you ❤
The using God like a fortune cookie analogy is absolutely perfect
I'm a charismatic Calvinist ;P
My very best friend is a brilliant, devoted lover of Jesus and she is an Arminian.
Excellent Q&A 😊
You and Mike Winger should do a Q&A Friday Collab!
Yes!!
Why did you go to a Reformed church?? Their theology is not scriptural although they take scriptures out of context to use as proof texts.
I love twinkle lights. I love house plants and have fairy lights . I just think they are beautiful and relaxing .
Good to know!
that's kinda how mine worked. My music teacher in HS was a music therapist. His mistake was asking a sperg "how's life treating you?"
and id tell him for the whole period. But it was helpful for my stressors in school.
Hiya. I call myself that, too. You're the only other person I've encountered who does. Sperg on young sperg!
Thank you! Im someone thats been in chronic pain along with lupus and fibromyalga. GODS GRACE IS SUFFICIENT for me!. He has taught ne so much through my pain. I trust him and thats enough for me! 😊
As someone living with MS , I can soooo agree. God’s grace is sufficient. Just hold on.
Look into emotion code and body code... God created us and God can heal us in miraculous ways!
John MacArthur and Allie Beth Stuckey are both Calvinists. They are also wonderful teachers.
You are completely steeped in deception and remain 100% unsaved. Repent!
I love how the bible addressed this in that David was called to play music to calm King Saul.
Exactly! I waws about to say if someone is claiming music therapy is "new age" I'd argue the bible had that first and new age stole it.
@@molivah Precisely!
I originally had gone to college to become a music therapist. The curriculum and discipline is very detailed and scientific to give a framework in order to perfect it to an art to help others who can benefit from the treatments. The therapy can help physically heal by connecting movements for playing instruments to the muscle memory needed from the brain, or it can be used as an auditory means for emotional growth and development.
... and much more!
As a former piano teacher, I totally agree. ❤
You just answered a question I've been wrestling with for years. Thank you!
Thank you for backing off the criticism from these type of therapy.
*King Saul
@ST52655
Young David played for King Saul. King Solomon was the SON born to David after he became King David.
I think some may confuse music therapy with sound healing. Sound healing is an eastern practice and includes frequencies to open your mind. This is used in conjunction with meditation.
Love your level headed, spirit led perspective

Just curious, can this type of therapy help with seizures as well?
Melissa, this video was very helpful. I appreciate your thoughtful and thorough response to every question. This helped me. 💜
You were predestined to say that.
To the people ragging on Reformed theology in this comments section, did you actually WATCH this video? Did you HEAR what she said? Some of you need to check your hearts because, by your words, you seem really bitter. Smh.
Not bitter...freed.
I appreciate this wisdom. What music can lead your feelings and emotions to go in many dirctions.
I really appreciate your answer to the last question ❤️
I always use David Guzik for my studying 📖 I attend Calvary Chapel and I am so grateful that God has given us so many gifted and devoted teachers within our church community.
In 1 Samuel 16:14-23. David payed the harp to refresh Saul from a distressing spirit.
David played for King Saul. I’m not justifying certain music just thought of it.
Not sure if anyone else has posted this, but music therapy can be very useful for the elderly population experiencing alzheimer's/dementia since music is strongly connected to specific memories. It's also been found useful for kiddos on the autism spectrum.
New age because I don’t look like a troll on camera 😂 loved this video
It feels good to listen to music that you like (depending on the music), petting or caring for animals can also feel good and be "therapeutic," while things like proper training/exercise (both lifting/resistance and cardio.) is a much more potent, efficacious proven therapeutic practice for most people, as is a healthy diet, sufficient sleep, etc. All these things can be used with other forms of therapy as suited to the individual, but, of course, the ultimate healing and therapy comes from the Great Physician, the High Priest, the Lord Almighty, the Creator, God!
Thank you for explaining it so well ❤
While i grew up in a disfunctional family with a violent father on thingni can appreciate aboit him is that he shared his love of rock collecting with us. We dug deep into a flood way to get Selenite Crystals and then he would make jewlery out of them, just to name ine adventure. But
With the new age has spoiled it for me as i would love to wear jewlery mad from God's beautifully designed rocks and semi precious gems, i hesitate for two reasons.
WoW. Thats amazing. Happy for you and her.
Thank you so much for this.
I’m in the same predicament.
I LOVE the playground metaphor!!! I'm using it.
Read--'God Doesn't Whisper' by Jim Osman
Classical Music is calming , old hymns are edifying while CCM isn't
Calvinism come in many degrees, but I lean to Free Grace theology which offers Salvation to All in this life through the Gospel of CHRIST by Faith.
Just a tip from a media pro who loves your channel. ;p😎❤
And, I'm SO glad that you get to study!!!!!
Melissa, you will enjoy than the teaching of TOM BRADFORD. Thanks for your videos. We need your teaching.
It depends on the type of music therapy. Singing bowls are becoming more popular. It's a Buddhist practice.
"The musicians needed additional training before entering the ' facilities'..."
Very interesting.
- and David played the harp for Saul as to calm him
I think there is a difference between music therapy and sound or music healing.
Decision Making and the Will of God by Gary Friesen is a great book that goes heavy into the theology of this topic.
1 Sam 16:16
1 Samuel 16:23 David plays the harp for Saul and relieves the anguish caused by an evil spirit. Sounds like music therapy, don’t you think?
Sound Therapy and Music Therapy are quite different. I quit practising Sound Therapy when I got saved by the grace of God. I felt the Holy Spirit convicting me so I prayed for guidance. It became quite clear to me that I shouldn't be delivering Sound Therapy sessions anymore because the affects are inevitably altering a person's state of awareness and affecting their brainwave state. Furthermore, Sound Therapy is very much associated with New Age practices. Music Therapy is not New Age. Engaging with music and playing musical instruments can give a voice to those who can't express trauma verbally.
I dated a music therapist once. It was very therapeutic.
Just found your channel, really interesting 👍 ❤
Music as therapy is good as long as you give the credit to God... David playing the harp for Saul comes to mind
Thank you so much, Melissa. Such wisdom and grace. You are a blessing.
Music therapy is in the Bible David playing the harp for Saul, but like every thing it can be miss used type of music etc.
I know music therapy is sometimes used with autistic children to help them settle and focus. I also thought about David playing for Saul.
