- The wolves here are timber wolves in captivity; however the mating cycle continues. The alpha male shows his dominance in the pack and mates with the alpha female in heat. Almost always, only the male and female alphas of the pack will mate. Others males want to get close but are soon chased off by the dominant male. During mating, the pair get locked together for a long time which is normal, as it ensures fertilization.
