Immensely helpful. I am so grateful. I've been feeling a little sick about the R6 being such a great camera, everything I could wish for after 56 years as a photographer, and yet the pictures seemed SO inferior compared to what I was able to get from my favorite sensor of all time, the Canon EOS 6D especially with the 135/2 for portraits. I worked so hard to edit thousands of pics from two big school shoots (theater and graduation). Can't tell you how relieved I am - I've never been a LR guy, but now I owe ya and I'm going to sign up for a first month of All Access to KJ. More than worth it for a dollar a day! A big factor with the new CR3 files from the R6 is the color profile. Adobe is no longer supplying "JPG color matching" color profiles for new cameras so it defaults to the "adobe color" color profile which leaves skin looking gray with drab colors. You can make your own color profiles with a color checker tool or there are a few people out there selling them.

Thank you Katelyn. I'm a sports photographer shooting with a 1dx and a R6 and the differences are driving me mad. Will work on my opposite C in the tone curve and see what happens. Thanks
Thanks for this Katelyn, recently picked up an R6 and discovered that - as you covered - my images felt a little flat vs. what I was expecting on my old 6D. Learning 'what's happening' is a life saver!
You can use a third party profile like ‘color fidelity’ to match the colors from the camera to Lightroom. That’s what I use on my R5 and it matches perfectly.
@@AustinRoss Of course it is. Has been supported nearly since release of the R. It was the profiles that where missing. So the Raw files were not interpreted in a way Canon does it. Hi Katelyn, I'm using an R5 and am wondering about creating a 'Custom Picture Style' so the files have the colour look I prefer straight out of camera. Have you ever considered doing this? Can it to create a more accurate starting point for editing? Or do you shoot with 'Standard Picture Style'? Thank you- I learn so much from your videos :)
Same as me, I was thinking to put my R6 for sale, and buy 5D mark IV, I like a-lot of features in R6 but still the color looks flat and not pop as my 5D markiii photos, thank you Katelyn will try ur tricks and tips and give it another chance!
Yes! Give it another try and see if you can make it work! The 5DIV is pretty similar to the R6 in terms of color and was a big adjustment for me when I first switched from the 5DMKIII.
The problem comes from Lightroom and Not from the camera! Try to process your file with Canons DPP Software First before fine tune in Lightroom. You will see that the first Processing by DPP is much better with the Standard Profile than that of lightroom
Oh my goodness. I thought it was totally me and I was going crazy. The switch from Mark III to R6 has made me so frustrated. Thanks for making this video.
Omg! I noticed this right away too. I stopped underexposing so much with my R6 than I did with my mark vi. I also had to lower shadows and blacks and increase my contrast a little more
These are good tips, but I switched to capture one and the files from the R6 with the camera matching profile are beautiful. I would suggest if u own an R5 or R6 to give capture one a try
I literally want to thank you for this. When I had purchased my EOS R5 & R6, I notice my editing style has changed because the camera profiles were not there in Lightroom. I've also noticed that both Adobe color profiles were a bit off compared to my old camera. Even after doing some research and purchasing the color fidelity color profile for both cameras, I still felt it was still off. So I decided to just edit both accordingly to how I would edit using my old camera. I never understood why this would happen but now I know that both the R5 & R6 appear to be flat. Thanks again for this video.
Another great video, Katelyn! I now own the L & L course and the Consistency course, and am so encouraged to think that I may be able to get this figured out! I can't wait to dive in!
Thank you so much for this. When I upgraded from the 5D classic (yup!) to my Eos R, I was getting so frustrated. My colors looked flat, greenish and overall yucky. I didn’t feel my presets worked any longer. Now I understand why and I am glad I am not the only one. Thanks for showing the additional adjustments!
Try this: Convert your files in Canon's DDP before going to LR. BIG, big difference. Adobe has more software work to do on converting the R6/R5 files. DDP does an excellent job converting the RAW files.
Canon shooters rarely understand what a gift Canon gives us with DPP. Who better understands their RAW files than the people who created it? When I ask my Pro friends if they have ever used it, they invariably give me the same answer as my serious amateur friends, they have never even looked at it. Want to try HEIF? DPP is where you start to process those files.
Good info here! We are in the process of changing from our MIII's to R6..I have noticed the flatter RAW files but you brought it to light! Now, if my 28-70mm would just bet out of backorder status! Thanks for all you do.
THANK YOU! I am about ready to return my R6! My style is different than KJ but this video has encouraged me to keep trying with this camera to match my style.
Kate, you’ve been raving about the R6 for a month and now it’s flat? I don’t like having to pay adobe a fortune for Photoshop and Lightroom’s monthly gouge. Now I need LR for all my R6 photos? I’ll try different lenses or different AWB or ISO or a deeper depth of field or longer shutter speed before I need to edit every one of my pix.
For a new photographer working on a MacBook Pro, what software program Do you recommend I purchase for my R6 raw files? Can’t wait to Purchase my 1st canon.
Katelyn I couldn’t get it if you said it. So I am asking you. Did you use the same EF lens with the R6? BTW from your R6 video it got me in purchasing R6 this week.😵 I move from basic T7i EF 55-250 4.5.6 IS STM to R6 RF 70-200 2.8L IS USM. Yep such big step but it was better choice than just buying same in EF 70-200 Mack III lens. Now in bigger league with more future potential.
Great video. I have the R6 and shot both the raw and normal heif files. I was really shocked with the noise in the raw files. I had to move the sliders to about 50 on both to make the pic look "normal" or similar to the heif file. Incidentally, the heif file looked fine and i didn't have to mess with the settings. I should state that it was of a basketball player in an order gym. Is that normal?
Mam, I planned to upgrade my canon 80d to mirrorless camera....But i have a big confusion regarding canon R6 vs sony a7iii....so please suggest me that best came for me?
I struggled with the R6 so much that I returned it. Now I have the R5 and get better results, but I still don't get the nice results I was getting with my EOS R. The R5 and R6 are much nicer to shoot with, but I'm really unhappy with the results I've been getting.
Do you find the R5 is sharper? I find the r6 seems hare to focus with backlit images. I’m wondering how much sharper the R5 is vs. the r6? Any imput on improvements on the 5 vs. 6 would be great
@@jgraelerphotography I've been having a really poor experience with my R5. Nearly all of my images are soft and ever so slightly out of focus. I'm used to tack sharp, crystal clear images from my EOS R and I have yet to get even one shot from my R5 that looks like that. Canon won't help me because I don't have any Canon lenses. I use Sigma Art lenses or the newer Tamron lenses with the adapter. They work great on the R, but I guess I'll have to borrow someone's RF glass to do some testing. I've found some other people online who have similar issues, but I don't think we know for sure what's up yet. Some have been saying that they had to send their R5 back to Canon to fix a sensor misalignment. Others are saying their problem is focusing lag with the autofocus, which I suspect is more what I'm running into. I'm not sure yet. All I know is that I'd happily return this R5 if I could and go back to shooting with the R.
I had the same issue at first with my r6, I was beside myself with issues. I couldn’t get anything sharp. I changed my shutter and set it up for back button focus and it was night and day difference. Have you tried that? When I used the shoot trigger as my focus and shooting it seemed to be a lag. So I went to bbf and it helped but not great then I saw in a few groups that switching shutter helped them
@@jgraelerphotography I do use back-button focus. I may try switching shutters to see if I notice a difference. It's frustrating to shoot an image with a really lens at a fast shutter speed and still see what looks like motion. I can't figure it out and it's a little depressing, to be honest.
Very interesting video! Out of curiosity did you have the Auto Light Optimiser (ALO) enabled on the R6 (and on the Mk III) ? Since the R6 has a better dynamic range it could maybe explain the discrepancies in images?
Thanks for the video. I'm coming from the Canon EOS 80D to the R6, and about freaked out. For the most part, my photos have the same look and feel, but I don't have a consistent style. Plus, I used to like my images slightly on the darker side, but I'm loving the more bright and airy look. I'll be working on this, and your video was a great start to being more intentional about my edits. Thanks!
I loved this! I actually struggled so much more with my Mark iii than my R6, I felt like something finally clicked and this explains it! What do you have your LCD and viewfinder brightness set at? I remember watching with your old cameras you had them turned up all the way. Is the R6 set the same?
Thank you so much for this video. I’m shooting with the R6 & tend to get color loss in my shadows 😭 any tips on this? What iso have you found as good choices? I watched a video on canon iso & someone suggested 100,400,800,1600,3200 How high have you shot & still had good results. Thank you so much!
Ouch. When I moved up to pro full frame, I went mirrorless and never had any 5D body. Would you still recommend getting a 5D3/5D4. Or not selling it, for those who have?
I was thinking why not go into picture styles and make custom adjustments there to get the image closer to what you want in camera and make all editing simpler.
Any tips on how to actually get the CR3 photos into lightroom? I've run updates and it's still not allowing me to import them. I downloaded the DNG converter, but I noticed yours is still reading as a CR3 file. What have you done differently?
I enjoyed following this tutorial. I am slightly color blind so my color editing preferences are different than some one that is not color blind. When I take the color blind test at first I can not see the colors but when I look at the answer and see what I am supposed to see in the colors when I look back at the test color image I can see the colors in the test image as I know what to look for from seeing the answer image.
Interesting. Everything you’re saying here was my experience when I moved to the original R from a 6D body. I never did like the flat look of the r nor the way the files handled and the way they look so I actually got rid of it. But In retrospect I wonder if it’s because I didn’t have the appropriate mirrorless lenses that I think makes a difference
You're going to find yourself preferring the R6 because of Auto Focus ease of use. Your hit rate with the R6 will likely be around 90% while the 5D3 is probably closer to 60.
Vincente Sanchez this guy has a better starting point for R6 profiles than what Adobe still doe not offer. Knowing that the profiles are different on the R6 and mk3 the thing I notice in this video is that she uses the same custom profile for both raw files and that will be different for each in an ideal world. www.colorfidelity.com
I found how to download Adobe DNG converter and use it to convert my R6 RAW files to get them into Lightroom 6. But after editing I can’t export them. I keep getting errors. Can you help??
Hi, I own a Nikon D750 and I can edit RAW files I download online (to practice editing) in less that 5 minutes and the final results are amazing but whenever I try to edit my own RAW files from my D750 it takes forever and the final results can't even match the other edits I do from other RAW files I download, I've been struggling for more than a year and I can't make it work for any of my Nikon D750 RAW files. Please help!
Had mine for 2 months and had to send it back to Canon. The rear dial stopped working. I’ve been without it for 1 week now. Separation anxiety is kicking in 🙁
I'm curious. Did you keep your Mark III for a backup or do you think getting another R6 would be best so there is consistency? I have a Mark IV that is now my backup, but I find myself "forgetting" some things when I pick it back up again! LOL!!! Thanks for the great content!!!
You're welcome! Right now we have two R6s, one for me and one for Michael. If my R6 were to go down during a wedding day, I would probably use Michael's for the rest of the day and he would use the MKIV!
Probably because of adapter,. It may affects some colors on r6,. Did you try to shoot 5d miii 50mm 1.2 vs r6 RF 50mm 1.2, I'm 💯 percent,. R6 will have much better color.
It is not from the Adapter and also not from the camera. It comes from Lightroom itself, try to compare the Standard Lightroom Profile against the ones Made by Canons DPP Software. Big difference!!!
The adapter has nothing inside of it but empty space. It doesn't have optics. All it does is increase the distance between the sensor and the lens to imitate the housing for a DSLR mirror.
Hi, PLEASE HELP. :( I have a question that I am hoping you can help me with. Every time I plug in my SD card to my computer and open my canon folder, all of the photos I have taken show up as a lightroom file and do not open to view them at all unless I open them in lightroom itself. I use to be able to open my file folder and have all the raw images ready to view and separate the ones I like and from those, I uploaded them to lightroom to begin my editing process. Am I doing something wrong? I have started to get very fustrated. I am not sure if this is how canons files are, since I moved over from Nikon. If you could please help me I would really really appreciate it. I am lost here :(
by default, windows is not able to decode the raw files of the newer cameras, thus you dont get a preview in the file explorer and cant open them in the default image viewer. there is an extension in the microsoft store, called "raw image extension" that adds basic support for many newer raw files. it can be a bit unstable and buggy, and will not show the colors like on the camera though (from most cameras they look really meh). its probably best to adjust your lightroom workflow here and import all files from the beginning.
@@karenyvettemendoza5583 as far as i know there is no addon for macOS that you can install. if the camera raw format is not supported with the latest system updates than its not possible to preview and open them with onboard methods.
@@karenyvettemendoza5583 Apple has added support for preview for CR3 files. It's not a clear cut support though. Just do a software update to the latest software. If not, find a RAW photo viewer.
Canon is now on under exposing their images to protect the highlights because they have better dynamic range now. My Olympus cameras same thing. That's why I over expose by +0.7 sometimes if I'm shooting jpegs stuff I don't care about editing. Like photos for myself.
You could add a pre-import Develop settings on all your R6 files to get this like the 5D III or even add a little more by default when you import! This would save some time editing the images.
The main problem is that the Lightroom camera color Profiles for the Canon R5 and R6 are TERRIBLE. Adobe needs to fix this. Their profiles for the Canon 5D mk 3 and mk 4 and even then EOS R are much much better.
that most probably will not happen because a) canon changed the way their color science stuff works which makes it harder for third party developers to simply implement the profiles into their software, and b) adobe is lazy.
Very important Video! The original R is even worse. I first thought that they fixed the issues which the R had with the R6. Many stated that the R6 is way better than the R, which is true - But it is still worse in terms of vivid colors and depth rendition than the 5d III. Damn... Why Canon? Why? 😕
That is not a camera issue. A raw file is just what it is called, a raw file of the data the sensor sees. the final "look" is just a result of how the editing software is interpreting those files. and sadly adobe is not really good in doing that for the newer cameras. if you use canons own DPP software you will see the raw files look exactly like in camera jpegs color wise. capture one also does a nicer job.
The reason is simple. Lightroom doest support the R cameras fully, as they down offer a dedicated profile. But: This recently changed with the latest Lightroom update.
Hi, I thought I was here to learn how to make a Canon color matching profile and how to install it in the color profiles panel but instead you just showed how to make a preset basically - which is not a color profile. But thanks anyway, I'm sure there are people out there who don't even know how to make presets so it probably helped someone.
you say the R6 has dull colors...but your photo only has earth tone colors...those are dull colors in general. U could have used a better subject/capture to do the compare.
@@nguyenucanh6734 the DR of the R6 is measurable better, please visit the following Website and compare different cameras: www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm. The R6 is more than 2stops better in DR
Ah the color profiling at it again! I so hate it to make a preset for each and every lighting condition. Plus Adobe products PS camera raw and LR introduce noise even at the lowest iso settings, dpps messes up the image globally as it has some sort of very aggressive noise reduction that cannot be turned off
@@KatelynJames I'd like to ask how does the new full frame versions from canon cope with third party lenses? no issues with lens data and camera communication? After I upgraded to a 90D I'm disappointed by canon, badly, way to fool the customers with too good to be true spec sheets and in reality they give out a do it all hobbyist camera. Plus I can kiss old non canon glass goodbye... I should have opted for on older full frame like the 5D MK3 or even MK2
Its only about color profiles and thats all...Adobe just do not wont to realease a camera matching profile...if you want to have real Canon colors,go and use Dpp-Digital Photo Profesional software by Canon,or..buy Color Fidelity profiles...have heard that they are very close to Canon's Dpp.I use for my Eos R camera matching ''Camera standart'' and its almost 80% close to original Canon colors, all the fault is by Adobe...they can't provide good matching true colors.
There's more than just color profiles though. Import the same photo into Lightroom and Capture One and zoom into the same spot on both programs side by side. You'll see right away that sharpness is being lost in Lightroom along with color and exposure. This is 100% adobe's fault and it's shameful that after 3 years they still haven't added profiles for the R and RP.
@@AustinRoss I now use Eos R with Color Fidelity Standard profile..and i will tell you one thing...this profile is almost 99% accurate to DPP software by Canon...i am truly impressed,no more green/yellow strange colors...Eos R is brilliant camera, and has amazing Canon colors, all the problem comes only from Adobe . Omg! I noticed this right away too. I stopped underexposing so much with my R6 than I did with my mark vi. I also had to lower shadows and blacks and increase my contrast a little more
Thanks for sharing!
These are good tips, but I switched to capture one and the files from the R6 with the camera matching profile are beautiful. I would suggest if u own an R5 or R6 to give capture one a try
Thanks for the tip!
Yep, Capture One supports the CR3 file format.
We can just look at your video when your on the screen and see you know color. So clean and realistic. Thanks for your work.
Awesome! Thank you!
You're welcome, I'm glad it was helpful! It definitely takes some adjusting but it'll be worth it in the long run!
FastStone image editor handles CR3 files, appears to allow RAW edits right out of the CR3 so no batch conversions required.
I just bought the R6. My old Lightroom (6.14) doesn't recognize the Raws (cr3) but luckily enough there is the free Adobe DNG convertor.
Thanks for watching!
Another great video, Katelyn! I now own the L & L course and the Consistency course, and am so encouraged to think that I may be able to get this figured out! I can't wait to dive in!
You got this!
Haha, wow what a big upgrade! You're welcome, thank you for watching!
The Problem comes from Lightroom, because it processes Data different than previous Versions
Interesting
Are you converting them to HEIF or TIFF files, then importing to lightroom?
Can you explain more on how to convert and what to do?
Macyleebeauty yes convert to what? The moment you change to another format you are throwing away some of the raw data.
Good info here! We are in the process of changing from our MIII's to R6..I have noticed the flatter RAW files but you brought it to light! Now, if my 28-70mm would just bet out of backorder status! Thanks for all you do.
Glad it was helpful!
THANK YOU! I am about ready to return my R6! My style is different than KJ but this video has encouraged me to keep trying with this camera to match my style.
You can do it!
There was a YT Nikonian creator returned his Z6 for a Z5 because the Z5 is closely matched with his D750 than the Z6.

great video, very inspiring. thank you greetings from Indonesia

Thanks for watching!
For a new photographer working on a MacBook Pro, what software program
Do you recommend I purchase for my R6 raw files? Can’t wait to
Purchase my 1st canon.
LightRoom
Capture One... hands down. Light room doesn't support CR3 files still to this day
Katelyn I couldn’t get it if you said it.

Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this! I may try this jumping from Nikon so I can compare and see what I need to do differently as well!
oh man!! big things!!
Definitely reassuring. Anyone know if it’s possible to change settings and get that mark iii look sooc?
I am not aware of any

Definitely R6 🔥
What a STUD MUFFIN!! Thanks for this video - I came from the 5D Mark 3 and have felt I needed to relearn how to edit.
Thanks for watching!!
@@johnneiberger could it possibly be an issue with the IBIS ?
Very interesting video! Out of curiosity did you have the Auto Light Optimiser (ALO) enabled on the R6 (and on the Mk III) ? Since the R6 has a better dynamic range it could maybe explain the discrepancies in images?
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I didn't catch it. Was she shooting with the lens adapter? Could that account for the darker image?
I do with some lenses. I don't think that would affect it.
I loved this! I actually struggled so much more with my Mark iii than my R6, I felt like something finally clicked and this explains it! What do you have your LCD and viewfinder brightness set at? I remember watching with your old cameras you had them turned up all the way. Is the R6 set the same?
Yes it is the same!
Thank you so much for this video. I’m shooting with the R6 & tend to get color loss in my shadows 😭 any tips on this? What iso have you found as good choices? I watched a video on canon iso & someone suggested 100,400,800,1600,3200
How high have you shot & still had good results. Thank you so much!
Use Capture One. Adobe doesn't support R5/R6/RP/R RAW CR3 files.

I shoot in Raw with the R6 but for some reason in lightroom they seem too pixelated :/ Do you know how to fix that?
OH MY GOSH!!! YES This took me months to get it better! It was all flat and almost gray!! I needed this video months ago!! AMAZING
haha sorry for the delay!
I like to shoot a wedding with the R6 and the 5D3... would this be a big no as the colors are to much different ?
wondering the exact same thing for an upcoming wedding..
It should be pretty close!
If you edit using software that actually supports the CR3 file (not Adobe), it's pretty close.
Do you sell the peachy warm profile?
Thanks for watching!
Peachy Warm Profile - is this your preset or did you purchase it? Love the tones.
Thanks for watching!
Is the 5DMIII not just better wit colors? I don’t want to tweak things for every photo.
It is not better it is just different. Once you figure out how to work with the r6 files they are better!
Ouch. When I moved up to pro full frame, I went mirrorless and never had any 5D body. Would you still recommend getting a 5D3/5D4. Or not selling it, for those who have?
Ideally your backup camera would be the same as your main!
My m1 MacBook Air can’t preview c-raw or raw photos. Really sucks have to guess which picture is which.
Yes that is frustrating! Hopefully Apple fixes it soon!

Are you using lightroom Classic?
Export in DPP to TIFF and then import to lightroom.
Alternatively use Capture One.
What camera are you using to shoot yourself with?
That is a Tyler Herrinton Question!
Such a great video! Thank you!
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for watching!!
Its because the 6D produces better images straight out of the camera. Simple as that.
I don’t see any backwards C’s?
in the sliders, the resemble a backwards c
I just love how calm and encouraging your voice and manner is :) Thank you
Wow, thank you!
So do you think its a bad idea to dual shoot with one r6 and one 5dmiii??
It was difficult for us to have an 6 and mark iv. That’s all I can speak to.
You're going to find yourself preferring the R6 because of Auto Focus ease of use. Your hit rate with the R6 will likely be around 90% while the 5D3 is probably closer to 60.
Colors in lightroom are different because Adobe hasn't the Camera internal Color Profiles of the Canon R5, R6. Easy as that.
Thanks for watching!
I wonder when these will be available!
Wait...still??? Wow

In which areas? She compared the R6 with the Mark IV indirectly when she bought the camera (you will find the Videos)

This change happened since the 5Dmk4. So I’m ok with this. But thank you 🙏🏾
Yes!
Interesting, you make less contrast with the black and white sliders and doing the opposite with the curve. Aren’t you canceling out?
No, I am adding pop in different ways.
I wish I could take my 5d4 sensor and swap them to the r6 platform, it would be my dream camera.
That would be interesting!
Why move from mk3 if it takes a better raw photo?
I don't think it takes better raw photos. The r6 has more editing power!
Autofocus and Dynamic Range... all day
Had mine for 2 months and had to send it back to Canon.

I went from mark 3 to r6 😅 i think most of us did same jump
It is amazing!
Probably because of adapter,. It may affects some colors on r6,.
Did you try to shoot 5d miii 50mm 1.2 vs r6 RF 50mm 1.2,
I'm 💯 percent,. R6 will have much better color.
That would be interesting to try! We have the rf 50mm 1.2 and can test it
It is not from the Adapter and also not from the camera.
@@Digi20 thank you sooo much! I will give it a try! I have apple, not windows, would that make a difference?

The problem is that Adobe doesn't support the Canon EOS R6 / R5 / RP RAW format, even to this date (Oct 10 2021)

Good tip!
The main problem is that the Lightroom camera color Profiles for the Canon R5 and R6 are TERRIBLE. Adobe needs to fix this. Their profiles for the Canon 5D mk 3 and mk 4 and even then EOS R are much much better.
Thanks for watching!!
that most probably will not happen because a) canon changed the way their color science stuff works which makes it harder for third party developers to simply implement the profiles into their software, and b) adobe is lazy.
@@Digi20 yes, switched over to C1Pro and love it. Not much of a learning curve. The Canon R5 and R6 profiles are superb.
Adobe doesn't support the R6 and R5 at all. That's why they're terrible.
Very important Video! The original R is even worse.
I first thought that they fixed the issues which the R had with the R6.
Many stated that the R6 is way better than the R, which is true - But it is still worse in terms of vivid colors and depth rendition than the 5d III. Damn... Why Canon? Why? 😕
Thanks for watching!!
Do you follow the R6 instagram page?
I do not.
Implementing Log3 with update, but not usable for the most...Canon, update that thing!

Ah the color profiling at it again! I so hate it to make a preset for each and every lighting condition.
