If you don't have that clear plastic sleeve, is it perfectly ok to use electrical tape to wrap the area?
I have no idea if it's a good or bad idea, but when I cut a stranded wire, I tend to twist the plastic tube it as I pull it off, easing the removal along with making sure the wires are already twisted.

Having a problem I've not come across before. Using the Switchcraft jacks I'm getting some kind of short at the jack, when I put the finished cable in a tester I'm getting a faint light on the other (either way) pin. Could I be shorting or damaging the jack by overheating it with the iron?
Yeah that's why I wouldn't recommend them to someone (like myself) who's looking to do a few one off cables for personal use. I also found that plastic sheath to be awkward.
@TubeDepotTV so is it the connector itself messing up the whole thing or is it just the wire? because the same thing that happened in the beginning in the video still happens to me
Pull the plastic insulator part way off of the center conductor and then use it to twist the center conductor. Way easier and the strands wrap tighter.
Excellent quality video, Rob. I'm helping my friend wire up some of these exact plugs for his pedal board. Love the tip of bending down the upper connector. Really need to work on my technique.
There is no video online that shows how to solder a vintage RCA male plug. Could you make one please.

I've recently got some van damme Xkr cable and 6.3mm angled jacks to make some patch cables for my pedals ....angled jacks are ultra slim ones ,the ones has 2 screws to close the top bit...
they only have centre tap to solder but nothing for outside shield wire...
I've soldered the shield wire on a random place but it wasn't easy and extra Heath melted a bit of plastic bit inside the jacks and now some has free play :(

hey man, i have a question, my instrument cables keep doing me like this, and im not sure if theyre just cheap cables or what, but its making me mad, so im thinking of making my own cables, do you know where i can buy all of the supplies online, instrument wire, cable connectors, shrink tubing, etc, anything that i would need for this project, that are all good quality and wont break on me after about a year?

I believe the part of the jack that holds the wire tight enough to maintain both wire and shield wire...

@TubeDepotTV the prices on your site are amazing! I don't have the money to order it right now, but I was just checking it out, and the things I was looking at were
1.) Mogami W2524 (15 feet)
2.) Amphenol 1/4" Straight audio plug
3.) Neutrik 1/4" Right angle audio plug
And in all it was a great price! ($26.75) one more quick question though , do you know where I can buy similar audio plugs, but in 1/8" (3.5mm) I record on my computer a lot and I would like to make a cable for my computer too.
how do you keep your soldering iron so clean?? mines seem to go black and work really bad.
is the brand of the soldering iron very important? am i going to have trouble with a cheap one?

Dat knowledge. I was considering installing the jack where the extension speaker out jack is(near the top on back) and simply securing all of the wiring that was previously there, but now im considering installing it near the bottom (near the bottom of speakers on the back)
Can you point me in the direction of a more appropriate jack?

Great video. I find the quality control on mass produced guitar cables (all audio cables, really) to be embarrassing. I got sick of buying cables that shorted out so, I've been making my own cables for a few years now. I cut my shield wire length back to the cut of the conductor dielectric so that if things get bent around in there, its less likely to short. I've never had an issue with a cable I've made. That clamp and clip for the shield wire is a slick setup.

can you put Flux on the conductor if you are going to use Solder with flux in it i.e (60/40)?
The strain relief of the 280 plug has always baffled me. Squeezing it around the cable with the pliers is no where as effective as using the proper crimp tool the big cable makers use. I think the tool is expensive, but I just emailed Switchcraft to see.
You are the man! I have watched a few of these and very few if any have used any flux on their wire. What kind of flux and solder are you using from your site? I don't remember you saying?

That is liquid flux. It is used to improve the solder connection.
Thanks for the great tutorial!!! I am going to be replacing a similar plug to this soon and was wondering if that terminal you solder the core to is connected to the ring or the tip???

Should the center conductor touch the center 'pin' once it does through? It doesn't look like it is in the video. Also, do you sell that flux on your website? Thanks.
What I don't like about the 280 is that both the hot and ground connection in the plug itself is only held together by the flaring of that pin (the center connector acting as a rivet). So after you so carefully solder the wires to the solder lugs - you still have a poor connection because the solder lugs themselves are loosely riveted to the jack (or will become loose very soon once the cable gets hard use). They work great at first but they fail quickly in service as that rivet loosens up and the connection becomes intermittent.

@TubeDepotTV I use a petroleum PASTE flux on my connectors (before soldering). However, I have been told by several people (online) NOT to use flux on electrical connections because it will "Corrode" the connection over time. However, I have NEVER experienced this. Your thoughts?

I don't know why anyone would use Switchcraft style connectors when there are Neutrik or Amphenol (clamping type) connectors readily available. The shell on the Switchcraft connectors comes loose easily and there is twisting and pulling strain on the solder connections. For $15 to $20 you can build a much better an far more reliable cable using quality parts. I have home made cables that are more than 15 years old and still going strong. If you're going to build cables, use quality parts.
Haha I actually watched this to figure out how to properly solder to a 151 jack. Converting my tube combo into a speaker cab. While I have your attention, where would you recommend putting the jack intended for speaker input?
Thats a very good tutorial! One tip tho, you should always clean the flux off the joints with isopropyl alcohol because it is highly corrosive and will shorten the life of your connection. :)
Jacob Ford this is misinformation. These concerns apply only to connections on a circuit board using inorganic flux.

Do you have a weird accent, or did you actually say "tanned" instead of "tinned" at 2:45? Maybe you should send your cables to a Tinning Salon, to be sure.
