I do actually kinda like the Discovery Uniforms too - but there are two elements I'm not so sure about.
      The Shoes
& the way the department colours get lost.
I actually like how they dress Culber sometimes - his white Uniform - and I think some iterations on those would be something I'd like it would look perhaps a little less like a south american football team's tracksuit team training photos.
As for the Star Trek 2009 Uniforms I like the Gold much more than the usual Mustard.
One of my fav uniforms is perhaps the Future Uniforms - Seven looked really nice in that blue one they put her in for example.
Beverly and Troi look nice in their Later season Uniforms too - and to some extent Data - but sometimes Worf looked a bit uncomfortable in his.
If you had to twist my arm I think excluding some very obscure background ones - I'd have to go with Voyager - in that perhaps along with Enterprise it's one i'd not mind being seen wearing in public.
But yes I also like Kirk's Jacket from beyond - but the Uniform Spock has on from the Franklin is really nice too. Some of the JJverse Universe look better than others though - I think Uhura looks very nice for example the balance of colours and fit is mostly nice on her. But Spock's doesn't really fit him very well.
I'm not a fan of the Season 1 ^& 2 TNG Jumpsuits though - once they were two pieces then I like them more.

My personal favourite was always the Voyager/Early DS9 uniform. In my opinion, they captured the perfect balance of everything. They look well made and have a high quality appearance to them, while also showing the vibrant colours. Compared to the TNG uniforms, which in early seasons kind of had a cheap body suit appearance to them. I also think they look sleek and have a bunch of minor details that make them look more polished. Like the undershirt, front slit, etc.

Originally designed for TNG movies. They couldn't make up their mind should movies and tv-shows have separate uniforms. Originally TNG-movies were going to get new uniform in the first TNG film Generations. That uniform didn't work and they reverted to using mixture of TNG and DS9 uniforms. The black and grey uniform was for the First Contact. To give movie literally darker tone.

    • @tuscan9617
      @tuscan9617 3 роки тому +4

They definitely fit the much darker tone of DS9 in the later seasons, more professional and subdued, they look like proper uniforms for a military/exploratory force, and considering the Dominion war they fit perfectly while still keeping a little bit of color around the collar.

From a strictly practical standpoint, the Disco uniforms are probably my least favorite. The different department colors should tell you at a glance what role a person fills aboard the ship, not unlike the jackets for a flight deck crew on an aircraft carrier. Of all the designs, Disco's metallic accents do the worst job of this; the colors just don't stand out enough from one another, especially in limited-visibility conditions. The movie and ENT uniforms have the same problem, but there's just enough color in them - and enough contrast between those colors - to make a meaningful difference. Oddly enough, the lower-budget TV uniforms have been the most effective in this regard; personally, I favor the simple and straightforward designs of TOS and Voyager.
(To Rowan: if you happen to reply to this, what kind of color-blindness do you have specifically? It might better inform my understanding of how you perceive the designs.)

There's a bit of minutiae about the TWOK uniforms that I enjoy. Note the several different colours of the undershirts and shoulder and wrist straps, denoting department. But they're not the basic three colours of broader groups of departments that the TOS uniforms featured. There's now a different colour for each specific department. Some of those colours don't go especially well with the red tunics, such as the mint green for Medical, but it gives the uniforms a little bit more visual interest. But what's really curious is that those department colours were carried over from the TMP "70s cult pajamas" uniforms. You'd never notice it if you aren't looking for it, but those same department colours were present in tiny portions on the backing circles behind the Starfleet insignia on the chest. They're also a bit more visible on arm bands on the overcoats our heroes wear at the end of TMP when they go out to meet V'ger. It's fascinating, to me, that when TWOK completely redesigned everything else about the Starfleet uniforms, that one element was retained and expanded. I wonder who decided that and why. For those interested, the complete list of the movie-series department colours, as well as a wealth of other design elements, can be found in Pocket Books' 1987 licensed tech manual "Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise."

Having served in the United States military, the one criticism I've always had with Starfleet uniforms (yes I know Starfleet isn't supposed to be "the military", but still), they only seem to have slightly different versions of a uniform at any given time period (mostly distinguishable by colors rather than functionality). Starfleet should have multiple uniform types in any given era. For example, they should have a dress uniform, a field uniform, a medical uniform, and at least 2 or 3 variants of a duty uniform, etc which all look very different from each other and function differently. The problem I have with the Discovery uniforms for instance is that they all look uncomfortable and hot as something to be worn all-day long. In the military, we have long sleeve variants, short sleeve variants, and different coats/jackets to be worn if extra layers were needed. We also have dress uniforms that don't look like dresses, and which have lots of accouterments on them. Why don't they wear ribbons or medals on their dress uniforms? Why don't they wear name tags or unit/ship patches on their duty uniforms (other than the Starfleet insignia). Something to identify the person besides just their rank and job. Why not wheel caps or some "cover" for field uniforms when they are off the ship? (We saw this in the JJ Abrams films, but that's all). My favorite uniforms are:
    1) Dress uniforms:
    - Wrath of Khan - red/maroon service dress uniform (SF headquarters, formal hearings, conferences)
    - Insurrection - "mess dress whites" (ceremonial occasions/Starfleet banquets/weddings)
    2) Duty uniforms:
    - First Contact/DS9 - black/grey w/division color undershirt (standard duty uniform)
    - Voyager - black/division color top w/violet undershirt (engineering/maintenance coveralls)
    3) Field Uniform:
    - Enterprise - Indigo "flight suits" w/ baseball cap (for away-team or shuttle flight missions)
    4) Medical Tunic:
    - ST Beyond - Blue medical uniform (for medical personal only)
    5) EVA suit:
    - First Contact - Environmental pressure suit

  • @Jolar70

One of the few fans of the TMP uniforms here! YES, they were deeply 70's! As much as the TV show reflected early color television with primary-color uniforms, the Motion Picture reflected the 1970's infatuation with "Earth tones"; of beige, gray, and brown.
The actors hated them because they were all pushing 50, or older, so no one wants to get into a form-fitting catsuit, as you're no longer in the prime of your youth! However, I feel the TMP uniforms reflect Roddenberry's true vision of Star Trek the best out of any. They reflect a team of earnest scientists traveling outwards, rather than pure military, which we begin to see in the next film, but it gets way worse later!
I love the TMP uniforms still, although, the command one's often appear on film as light blue, yet they look much better when seen in their actual cool gray form.

To me, the Enterprise uniforms are the most practical and realistic since they have useful pockets, look comfortable, aren't skin tight, and appear to be made of a practical material (not 100% spandix). That would be the uniform I would want to wear but I do think they should be 2 pieces instead of a jumpsuit however. The Wrath of Khan uniforms are the nicest looking IMO but seem too formal for a duty uniform. The TOS uniform ain't terrible either. I agree TMP are the worst and TNG Season I are almost as bad. How are pockets still not useful in the 23rd and 24th century? Do the vast majority of guys in the future really want to have their junk and beer belly on full display?

  • @wildsmiley

The Motion Picture uniforms that put extra emphasis on the crotch and season 1 TNG “skirts” that guys wore were the worst costume design decisions in the history of this franchise.

I've been hoping you'd do a ranking like this for uniforms for a while. And now that I've seen it, I must say that while I respect your taste, I don't agree with your ranking.
For me personally, the best uniform in Star Trek thus far has been the late DS9 uniform. As you yourself said, they're very professional and clean looking. Everyone shares the same color, style and fit just as you said you preferred in your top ranking uniforms, and for me the splash of color at the neck is more than enough to denote what your field of expertise is in Starfleet. It also retains the simple combadge design and the neck pickups. All of which you also seemed to overall like. Plus, you can take off the jacket top, and it's the only uniform that has ever had a matching vest underneath which showcases more of the color from the shirt. In all honesty, being a military man myself, I can honestly say that it's by far the most believable of all of these Star Trek uniforms (outside of Enterprise's post-NASA jumpsuits) showcasing something that a military or paramilitary outfit would wear daily. It's 100% an Army BTU/ASU type uniform.
Just barely below that for me are the British Navy inspired original movie uniforms. Just like you I've always loved them because of the way that, as you said, they harken back to an older time while still managing to feel futuristic and believable. (Even though they feel more like dress uniforms than daily wear and work uniforms.)
And if I'm being honest, every other uniform in Trek falls far beneath those two for me into an unorganized mass of "I don't really care for these uniforms.". LOL.

    • @PetersonZF
      @PetersonZF 3 роки тому

It picks up the all blue look from Enterprise, so I get it as an evolution. Except Enterprise had the division colours already, which were then lost in favour of gold, silver and bronze. • @martyREq2

Like that blue color itself.... that's ok and not looking that bad but overall... ENT looks pretty practical (all those pockets etc.) and yep they are blue.... but those yellow, red, blue stripes resemble some of older (future :) uniforms and also helps distinguish the sections. DIS gold and bronze looks almost from every distance the same and silver... it could be more like present day us military... distinguish officers and enlisted or higher and lower ranks.

The "tummy warmer" boxes were supposed to be biometric monitors. Why they'd need to be so big when Space: 1999 had wrist-mounted affairs not too dissimilar to the fitness trackers of today, who knows?
As weird as the STD season 3 unis are, they're still better than those blue-and-lam nightmares they wore before.
I would put the '09 Star Trek/Into Darkness uniforms higher, maybe even second only to the Star Trek II-VI uniforms. I like how they go hard back to the Original Star Trek unis, with a black crew-neck undershirt and the colored tunic on top. This was how they were supposed to be in the series, and you can see it in "The Naked Time" when Spock and Tormolin are being checked after beaming back from Psi 2000. Also whenever Dr. McCoy wears his short-sleeve tunic. The metal Starfleet delta is a great touch as well. I'd rank the Star Trek Beyond unis below these. I do not like the high collar on them, and I think the patterning on the prior design has a lot more visual interest than the very flat and matte fabric here.
Ugh. The "Enterprise" jumpsuits go only just above the TMP ones. More colorful, but too utilitarian.
Guh! No, the flashback "Picard" unis go below the late DS9 ones. I agree, though, that the present-day versions for that series are better than Voyager. A little more crisp, though the insignia should be higher up on the chest.
Heresy! No TNG designs can surpass the "Wrath of Khan" unis! And then you had to go all STD on us! Yikes, brother! These are only marginally better than the TMP outfits. I *deeply* hate the asymmetric collars and insignia. They're hideous, and putting the Original Star Trek color scheme on them only makes them worse! 🤢🤮

I feel you can always tell Starfleets mindset by whether or not they’re wearing grey or black in their uniforms and how militaristic Starfleet is at that point in their history. I personally love the 32nd century uniforms, but they could add a few things.
Some of the officers wear rank on their shoulders, but not all, make this common place and break up the monotony of the uniforms. Add a colored stripe down the pants and a strip around the wrists DS9/First Contact style. I like the simplicity of them compared to Discovery’s first style which seemed too in your face. I loved those too, but I felt they should’ve been much earlier than they were.
My three favorite Uniforms are the Kelvin Uniforms, the ones worn on the Kelvin, I just really dig them. The monster maroons at 2 and TNG 1st season(man skirt included) at 3.
I never liked the TOS uniforms, but did really like the Cage versions. The Beyond Uniforms were gorgeous and would definitely be number 4 for a top five list of my own.
The Franklin Uniforms, also with grey, were wonderful. They definitely felt like a natural progression of the Enterprise Uniforms. The Enterprise Jumpsuit was Earth Starfleet, and the Franklin Uniforms were Federation Starfleet if you know what I mean.
So, basically when Starfleet has to go on a more military footing, they tend to go for darker colors and more militaristic and/or simple styles. I also always felt that the Monster Maroon modifications from TNG that were seen for the Jack Crusher hologram and The Enterprise C should be considered placeholders until something is designed for that era. One could argue the Discovery Uniforms did that with the Cage Uniforms. I also wouldn’t object if at some point they switch the Strange New Worlds Uniforms for the Beyond ones and just pretend they are the TOS ones, just updated for the 21st century.
The Disco Uniforms I always felt should’ve been after the Franklin Uniforms, but before the Kelvin Uniforms. They fit better for me there, but I did get used to them.
Also, on an unrelated note, a buddy of mine who’s a quantum physicist, put me in my place when I said the Spore Drive was silly. He told me that the Mycelium Network sounded like Quantum Filaments to him, just you know, not Mushrooms. He said that the Spore Drive worked on the principle of using quantum filaments to travel faster than light, only safer. He used the Solar Sail Ship Simulation in Tron as an example. The ship in Tron didn’t use solar energy, but a beam of energy to move. They then had to transfer to another beam of energy. This would be like traveling using a quantum filament, one would lasso(his word) a quantum filament and use it to pull yourself along within a quantum flux or whatever he said, and arrive somewhere else along the path of quantum filaments. One could jump tracks to change direction. I have a background in Psychology, not Physics, so I don’t know exactly what he said. So there you go, A second hand account saying the Spore Drive isn’t stupid.

The reason for why the new grey uniforms don't look like they properly fit on the Discovery crew while they fit on folks like Vance might be that the ones they're wearing are not tailor made yet and they just got what was lying around for the extras that were running around in the corridors of the HQ. That way, the costs for newly tailored uniforms is basically outsourced to season 4's budget. We only saw them for a few seconds in them in season 3, so wasting a big chunk of costume budget on such a small scene when you can do it differently is a relatively good idea. Also we're just so used to seeing them in the blue uniforms lol

If only they had designed off Admiral Kirk's uniform design in TMP. The collar is good, the grey base with the center panel color for rank (white admiral, red command, etc.), change the top's hemline, change the pants to black or charcoal, a heavier fabric but not so heavy as Khan jackets - a blend of the Wrath of Khan and TMP.

for me the Wrath of Khan uniforms are the best. They invoke a type of naval tradition that I like.

Can you do a ranking for the starfleet badges? The normal ones not the ranks. Cause they have a lot to do for me on how a uniform looks. As former military badges, insignias many times made or break the uniforms especially when called up for inspection and I always thing a good insignia is a telling sign of your uniform

I think the Starfleet-of-the-Future ones from Disco S3 would be good as dress uniforms. You can leave an admiral in them and the main crew wears them occasionally, but yeah, I want more pop for the majority of scenes
