Very interesting video, as it took me back to my working days (I'm retired). During my working time, I would help the sales folks gather customer information re: their needs. We would gather a number of the customer employees from various departments and inquire as their specific needs - you can imagine how broad this could become. BTW we were selling software solutions.
To assist us we utilized a tool called 'Affinity Diagram Modeling' tailored to the customers' issue. We would begin by giving all of the participants post it notes. On the post-its the customer would write their response to a centralized question. Then we would place the post-its on large poster size sheets of paper looking similar to Claudine's Brain Dump sheet. Then we would begin to categorize like responses together. After this exercise it left no doubt as to what the problems were, all categorized/summarized in a way that could be shared with upper management.
Noting Claudine's words that you can't do everything for marketing/selling, I can see how Claudine's exercise (resembling Affinity Modeling) can work the same way for the author in developing themes/categories to focus on.
