Wow, this is fantastic. I think Michael Palmer is one of the best beekeepers to listen to. I was surprised to hear he grew up on Long Island ( I did too), and that he mentions “The Good Life” book as the inspiration. That is a must read. I really love these interviews…such a good idea. Especially during Winter when we get a break from beekeeping.
Wow I went to the Hampton Roads in Smithfield VA EAS in 2018. That was my first and last one since my big passenger van wouldn't start to leave and I got to spend the night in the parking lot and everyone I knew had left already. I loved going both days especially since it's over an hour away from me so I saved travel time. Luckily I had extra clothes bag and snacks in my van from a previous trip. I didn't know who you were Michael back then, the name yes but not your face. Since then, it has been the same weekend as my family reunion up northern WV. It was only my 3rd year and I had alot to learn about beekeeping. My mentor, Ruth, did the top bar class at the event

These interviews/conversations are great. But the highlight was the story about seeing Captain Kangaroo in church!! But no sign of Mr. Green Jeans, Mr. Rabbit or Mr. Moose? Good times!! FYI....I took two hives and two nucs into winter here in the foothills of NC and they all came out nicely. My big hive has already swarmed but I caught them so now I have five. So far....so good...thanks to folks like yourself giving out great information!!! I have set some area aside for resource hives/brood factories this year. Will make my first one on Saturday. Keep up the great work and as always....thank you!!!

Great interview Michael is a very down to earth person just like you and so many other people that keep bees. I really enjoy listening to him he makes me feel like anyone can breed queen’s. Lol I just want to get some through the winter. I watched him and listened to you talk about people using local stock from there area and that inspired me to buy my stock coming this year from the the start of Pennsylvania where I live instead of California. My packages are from Mann lake but they had different options to pick where they come from. I’m not sure if that’s new or something I just noticed.
Fred, On your intro you show the bees going back and forth on the landing board. I have noticed the same thing, especially on the landing board that is under a river birch tree. I suspect they are cleaning up any sap that is falling from the tree. But this time of the year there really does not have much sap in the trees. Smith Mountain Lake, VA, zone 7 and 65*f OAT. Craig
It's just washboarding. They seem to do that when they have extra time on their hands :) Not sure if I've noticed any particular substance kicking off that behavior.

I liked the interview with Michael Palmer. I've watched his presentations time after time, but on this live interview I learned a few new things from him. Also I'm from Central Pa, and I considering the Cornell Master Beekeeper program. Have you done a video on your experience in the program; if not, could you do one? I searched your videos but couldn't find anything.

Loved the interview, if you get a chance to interview him again I would love to hear more about his spring buildup management. I heard him say he manages most colonies without splitting because he concentrates on honey production and wants large population. Does he add pollen patties early to build population? Would love to hear him talk about that and how he manages swarm control without splitting. :)
A lot of people do that as part of their IPM, but I've also found that many people forget to remove the drone frames before they emerge... but it's a method that can definitely help reduce varroa.
Gr8 to know Michael and others are giving back to the bee community. Any chance you can ask what your experts think of alternative treatments for VDM control. Thinking of the Bacterial Approach and the Fungal Approach? Cheers… love the format. Greetings from Boracay.

@@MinnesotaBeekeeper All I can say is that I always super above the current boxes/hives. Unless... the top box is absolutely full of capped honey and is serving as a honey-cap. That's when you could consider putting a medium super under that one, orrrrr pulling the center capped frames and moving them up into the new super and dropping down the unfinished frames down to take their place. I wish I could answer for Michael, but I have to leave that to him :)
Trying destructive flow frame cleaning? My thoughts are metal garbage can with hot water, to render the wax out. 3 frames 1/4 raised with slight angle & separation to use conduction. Not sure if depth helps alot. Saw a UA-cam show on earwax, hydrogen peroxide (acid) was useless I believe distilled water and baking soda works better.
I think so, I'm just looking for Michael's link. It will go up as soon as that happens. Imagine not being able to go to school unless your parents can pay and put you in the required clothing when your father earns 5-7 dollars a day.
At my house if you fall asleep and leave the doors open don't be surprised if you wake up and there's chickens in the house and eggs in the corner where the dog sleeps and if you let her in all the time she will lay up about 12 eggs and sit on them and when they had y'all she will take them outside and bring them inside at night until they're about 12 weeks old.lol

Do you use an empty frame for drones and harvest that frame before drones exit ? A lot of varoua is there. Just a bio method for helping bees.

The iridescent blue morpho butterfly is not found in Indonesia; South America, Central America, and Mexico. Probably Panama in this case.
