USB Ports NOT WORKING? Let's Fix Them!

- A very common issue on modern motherboards is that the Intel based USB ports suddenly stop working. Reasons behind it can vary, but it happens often especially if you use the motherboard on subzero cooling and you have insulated it with vaseline or similar. It can anyhow happen even in just normal daily use with only air or water cooling.
Usually the reason behind that USB ports stop working is a blown fuse after each of the USB ports. A fully working fuse will have a resistance very close to zero ohms, but a blown one can have an infinite or very high resistance. One way of fixing the issue is to replace the blown fuses completely or just shorting them so that there is no fuse at all anymore per port. A reminder however is that you should not charge any device anymore from those ports that don't have a working fuse anymore. If something goes wrong you could damage the actual device or just the port. This fix allows you to use a mouse and keyboard properly again and you can use USB keys and similar devices properly again.
On this guide video I will show you the damaged fuses and how I just short them to make the ports working again the fast and easy way. On the EVGA SR-3 DARK there are 8 Intel based USB 3.0 ports in total at the rear IO, and one USB 3.1A port connected to third party Asmedia controller. The Asmedia ports always work, they usually don't have this issue and it still works fully on this motherboard as well, having around 0.4ohm resistance across the fuse.
All of the Intel fuses are pretty much blown so we will just short them, put the heatsink back on and run the motherboard as usual. REMEMBER that you are doing this on your own responsibility so be careful if you short the fuses with liquid metal or solder!
Thanks for watching and share this video if someone else has this same issue with a modern motherboard!

Back in the mid-2000s, it was actually common to use resetable fuses.
In fact, I just repaired a Socket 754 motherboard that had a catastrophic fuse failure. The fuse was reduced to ashes, and the pads were nearly pulled off the board, but it was still possible to carefully clean it up and replace it with another fuse from a junk board I had, and superglue the pads and SMD fuse into place.
Manufacturers could go back to them, but they cost more, don't act as fast, and when they fail, they tend to burn up.
I never heard a PC sound like a running car. How cool is that!
Thanks, I think you just solved a problem I’ve had with an old PC that’s been sitting for a few years because of the exact problem. I spent hours and hours on it years ago and gave up.
I actually use this board in my daily system with this fuse repair.
@@LuumiJuhanimy front usb ports are having probs the other usb ports in the back are ok.
@@LuumiJuhaniare the cables of front panel header also replaceable?
Just found your video. Arround 5 years ago I started with a Maximus VII Hero Z97 that had PCI Express failures and other small things not working right. Moved the next year to a Gigabyte G3 Gaming Z97 and everything worked for a while like a dream. But the last (3) years from now, I'm facing these issues. I mean, USB is working but behaves weird. My docks are not working via USB 3.0 anymore, and when they did, devices such as keyboard and mouse wouldn't be recognized when replugged or even after reboot. Currently, my pc's USB 2.0 ports are doing that job flawlessly. And with these issues, I mostly got the Windows warning: USB not recognized/unknown.
When I did make it work with the USB 2.0 as described, I tried to make it work with my VR headset that I bought recently. The outcome is that it did work as supposed to be, even with another USB 2.0 port. Now, it doesn't work at all on nothing but the front port of the pc case. But it would be possible that it can work on another day for example.. Possibility also is if it works, SteamVR fails to recognize it so it would be a false positive end result.
Hmmmmmhh.. I'm waiting for a chance to grab parts of the next generation to replace all of this piece of shit pc.
This whole thing started on Z97 in my experience.
Never had this issue with my z87, thanks for the fix.
Motherboard manufacturers could fix the situation but seems like they don't care. Also why not add a new larger fuse instead of shorting it? I used to do this with laptop motherboards when I repaired them for a job.
Yeah that is not a bad idea at all. Need to order some larger fuses.
Do you have a link where to buy larger fuses instead of those?
@@LuumiJuhani if they don't physically fit on the board there's always a way to fit them vertical, run wires or whatever. Just consider you may or may not be able to fit the heat sink or io shield thing back on. High temp glue sticks can help to make the mod stable and with isopropyl can be easily removed as it makes the glue brittle and loose its tact to what its applied to. Else it could get stuck to components and break them off the board if you try to remove it without isopropyl aka rubbing alcohol. Anyway hot glue has its downsides too. I'm just suggesting it if you are using a really unique way to fit physically larger fuses that doesn't fit in such a small place, it's not idea.
@@tacticalcenter8658 Just put sideways, but do you have a link where to buy some?
@@LuumiJuhani I do not have a link. I haven't repaired a motherboard for 5 years as I have changed professions and now just do part replacement and let vendors repair parts that are under warranty.
Thanks for your video, i'm from Brazil and my Maximus IX motherboard got this usb ports problem. My new trouble is find someone to fix it. Brazilians whatch you too.
I had the same issue on Maximus IX Apex, you need to remove the heatsink assembly and check the fuses right near the USB ports.
Thank you! My Asrock Z370 Extreme4 had a fuse with 22 ohms(Mouse flashing and keyboard without response on usb 2 x 3.1 ) and another with 84 ohms (1 x USB 3.1 did not work.) . Printer does not work on 2 x USB 2.0 (fuse with 22ohms) I made the bridge and everything now works . Thanksss! (name on fuse: -S )
hyphen s
For blown USB voltage lines i always use 1.5A fuse wire, alternatively you can bridge from the 5v line of the ATX connector
Great stuff! For years I've been using a PCI USB card on a Rampage II GENE since I blew all the ports powering a USB hub with a too high voltage power supply. Do you think it's just the fuses or the USB controller chip itself? Also would aluminium foil taped down work? As I hate soldering haha... Cheers from the UK!
Same thing happened to my MSI laptop with a hub wrong power supply fried all ports. Any luck with repairs?
@@edgebz I'm afraid I haven't tried yet as my OS drive on that PC failed. It seems as though it should work though.
Amazing, I did a test by putting metal to bridge and it works.
Question - Bypassing the fuse, will this destroy other components if another shortage happen?
But why did all my USBs short.
I did plug a new RGB keyboard. I feel that could have done it. Mind you my motherboard is 4th Gen Intel.
I have no idea why this happens so often. If you get a short it might just burn the port.
i think its a fail safe system to protect the damage to its north/south bridge chipset. Most cases the fuses getting blown bcos of high current draw.
It would be super helpful if you could post a hi res picture of the fuses of the dark mb
so lots of people could be sure to identify
great video ! thanks for lets know the issue

@@LuumiJuhani ok good point thanks
Question here: is the fuse fried, if I connect an external powered USB hub and the motherboard USBs work again? None of them work otherwise. Asus/Intel mobo.
Thank you for this guide
ty for u >> ur are helping me i have z270 ASUS usb ports not work just one of them i used now hub .. but thank you for give me idea what usb work now
Luumi you are insane keep going man
It works.
Thank you for the info! Great video! It's interesting to learn most of USB ports may not be used to power devices (I've just lost my 10A solar controller ports that I used to charge my daily devices... since I was using them to power them, the controller is now useless)... I wonder if external hard drives with no external power source may be at risk!?
Have an EVGA 750i FTW board I prize because it was from my first build. Board is mint except all USB and USB headers are dead so I have to use PCI card. Info here doesn’t seem to apply…any suggestions?
Hi, i have a Asus Maximus VI Hero motherboard for the Intel 4th gen cpu's with usb problems. The problem i have is very odd. The onboard connectors for front usb ports not working either. All usbs are not working/partially working. I did manage to upgrade the bios, and it went fine, but and it did recognise a usb in bios at that time. But now it wont. There was usb problems before i upgraded also, thats why i did that in the first place.
Its a while since i was testing this, but if i remember correctly here is how it works:
USB2 ports:
They ONLY work with mouse and keyboard (i think only the highest once on the IO was working)
If i connect a usb2 stick to any usb2 port its not detected either in Win10 or in the bios (drivers are installed in Windows, and everything shows up fine, all hubs etc)
Usb3 sticks does not work in Usb2 ports either.
USB3 ports:
Usb2 sticks, keyboards, mouses and other usb devices does not work, BUT Usb3 sticks DOES WORK in Windows if i remember correctly, but they are not detected in bios or on startup.
I have looked everywhere but cant find any info. Im now going to check the fuses on my board. But i would love to hear yout thoughts on this.. :-)
Edit:
Just checked all the fuses around the usbs and they were ok :-S I dont understand this, they show up in windows as normal, but not working..
I have cleared the bios also but no luck.
Reinstall a fresh copy of Windows. That worked for me when I had this issue
Hello. I am not experienced with soldering, and just want to get this right. You use the soldering material on top of the fuses right? Like you put the solder on top of the small fuse brick like you show in your video? or do you take the little fuse brick off the motherboard? And i'm wondering - is the soldering material allowed to touch the motherboard circuit board, or will that cause damage?
Hey, I have used that motherboard for daily use since I posted the video. Works great, just don't charge any device from those ports.
@@LuumiJuhanican i use it for transfering data?
I have a bent Asus B360 Pro-Gaming type c
thank you bro,,, its working, my z170 port usb2 back to normal....
I have a shorted back rear io USB. The PC will shutdown if i plug moderate power consuming device like RGB keyboard etc
Hi Luumi, i know u did repair a very nice asrock z170OC motherboard in the past, but is it possible for you to do a little Video on how to check if motherboard has shortcircuit and common stuff when MB seems to be dead, a nice guide from you would be my dream. Thank you so much brother.
The Z170M OCF is still dead. Key is to check the main voltage rails that are they zero ohms to ground.
@@LuumiJuhani thanks for reply, Im not sure how to check the main rail, I probe the 24pin to where? Chipset? I did check a couple videos but its still lacking to show where to probe properly
Does this apply to last gen AMD boards? Building a computer for a friend, and the usb plugs just stopped on an AM3 socketed board.
for some reason my rgb keyboard gives light but it just doesnt function in that mobo
@Yui its the pin connectorof your motherboard
Hi i have the same problem with a aorus gaming g5. I have "P-L" and "P-U" fuse. Do you know where i can buy them? Or wich model is compatible?
Just short them.
do you have a video of the water cooling system that your using? is it a chiller or something similar?
Normal water cooling but i can make a video of it.
i have this issue due to i plugged my powerbank into the front panel usb 3 and two of the usbs ports are dead now. later came to realise that we shud not plug any high current charging devices into any of the normal usb sockets.
My USB 3.0 ports on my Gigabyte b450 are failing one after another. apparently due to poor quality components they just wear out.
The issue is common among new boards. All old motherboards are rock solid.
Thank god for this video when you cant use your mouse or keyboard at all.
Haha, annoying right?
@@LuumiJuhanifor me the problem comes when transferring large files, it disconnects.
Hey I think this could be my problem because one of my USB3.0 ports has gone completely and the one next to it now has less power as if the voltage has halved but My PCI USB expansion works fine so it is just the Intel ones as you explain but my problem is my board is MSI Z77A G41 and it looks very different so I cant even identify the fuses at this point 😆 There is only one that I think could maybe be a fuse but I must be looking at the wrong thing, Hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
You would think a XOC motherboard wouldn't have these kinds of issues.
It can happen to any board, I saw one Rampage IV Formula getting it that was never used on other than air cooling.
I have MSI laptop maybe same thing has happened all USB ports except one works half way. My video hdmi port usb c port and sound are all out.
Thx a heap dude
I purchased brand new asrock motherboard and mass usb ports on it doesn't work but peripheral devices like keyboard works... Is there a fix for this?
Any type of keyboard works?
@@LuumiJuhani yes😕
Gonna try this on my Asus maximus viii hero later today,I'm getting the same exact issue. 🥂
My Z87-PLUS is rebooting in loop and sometimes when it doesn't the usb ports aren't working. Just sometimes it's working 100%.
thanks for the video awesome stuff but not good when it happens to me:)
I came from gigabyte forum after someone had posted there, I'm having the same issue. The mod there says motherboards do not have fuses. What's your input on this?
They do have fuses for all USB ports.
I have a asrock x370 with the same problem. I actully bought one pcie usb expansion
Is there an another video shows the fuse in big size screen?
The components vary. I can maybe try to check later. Fuses are generally easy to spot right after the USB ports.
my usb port is not burnt it just doesnt display anything whenever i plug in a flash drive or an external hard drive to it..pls help me
How fo i know which fuse should i shorted ?
hey, i have problem, do you have an idea why my 2 front usb is not working? it worked like 3 days ago then i gotta like something fix in pc then i tried to conect mouse and keyboard and on windows it says '' not recognized device '' something like that...

Bro in my pc the devices connected to all the usb ports light well (they are gaming led thing) but produce no response even in bios or the system itself. Only one port works properly can you pls help me out. I can't afford to buy a new pc and want to save this at any cost
My pc turns on and everything in the pc runs I don’t get any display on my monitor and usb don’t work also when I turn on the pc I can use the same button to turn it off I have to flip off the power supply
I have the same problem for turning of the pc you have to hold down the power button for a whle
is it 5v smd fuse to be exact?
I have a problem with my motherboard.
First some sata ports stopped working.
Then after power off pc, I could only get display through onboard. After few attempts, graphics card worked again.
Stable for 2 weeks 24/7
After next power off, now no display through onboard or graphics card. But a few power on/off and it worked.
Stable for 1 month 24/7
Power off again, now no display at all. I tried onboard, new cpu, new psu, different graphics cards.
Coulb be that yur power outlet is having issues
The Chipmunk USB tester is an easy way to see if the USB port is bad:

Thanks buddy
Eww, solder bridges. Now if you have bad USB device plugged into such "repaired" board, you will fry the board, instead of killing a 0.2$ fuse. You can buy these fuses from Digikey or Mouser, nothing special.
My whole thing is not working please help

i have a dead usb port on my asus z490e mobo... it sucks

You've got to be kidding me. Most ppl are not rocket scientists.
That is not rocket science, and very sadly the problem many modern motherboards face. Old motherboards do not have this issue. I have seen this issue numerous times already, Z97 OC Formula, Z170 and Z170M OC Formula. M9 Apex, and many other motherboards as well.
@@LuumiJuhani To a lot of typical people watching UA-cam this is rocket science. I stumbled over you video because I have an Asus ROG Rampage IV Extreme that all of a sudden the ethernet adapter and some USB ports have stopped working. For me to go in a solder anything in there would be suicide.
