When I lived in Madrid, more than 30 years ago, I did quite a lot of touring and I remember Villaconejos I went especial there for the melons. They were delicious! Hope yours eas as good.
Thank you for this lovely visit to Villaconejos. I live in a community in California that is a couple hundred years old and keeps tearing down old buildings to make new ones. It's a treat to see the architecture in Spain that has a lot of history. I hope the "Old folks" there get access to the internet soon so they can see your videos.
Hey Stuart if you ever wanna do another collaboration I'll bring you to a gypsy neighborhood where I know all the "patriarchas." At this point I've sorta made a niche out of it on my Spanish channel (Aventurero Elliot en Español) along with visiting the strange and lesser known places in the country. Most English speakers or tourists couldn't fathom the state of some of these barrios that exist in Spain, so there's not much of an audience for that type of content in English just because people have no idea those places exist.
Nonethless, great content, and I love how you constantly strive to make new types of varied content - a testament to your versatility as a creator. By the way, I was in Ceuta this last weekend and I got to dive into the border life culture and the apparent "most dangerous" barrio of Spain, el famoso Príncipe, Ceuta.
I appreciate that you say 'most English speakers' Elliot. I've been involved with Spain since 1982, I have a home in Spain and I'm married to a Spaniard. I'm not the average tourist but there are quite a lot of English speaking people that fall in to that category. Many British people have a profound knowledge and experience of Spain.

I really enjoy the videos where you explore these interesting little towns around Madrid. Having spent lots of time exploring little towns and villages in Galicia and Asturias, these little places are indeed fascinating!
Very often they are shit-kicker villages and small towns but these places are part and parcel of the make up of Spain. Madrid and Barcelona are only a minor representation of Spain. These places are the real Spain (whatever the real Spain is 😵💫).
Another great video Stuart. Very interesting. I love these small towns and you meet real people who are generally very open and friendly. I feel they've not been corrupted by the fast, don't give a damn, modern world. Thank you for sharing your visit with us and enjoy the melon.

Most of those market's are the same people that go from town to town.... I did it for a while. Normally the day of the market, some of local sellers/artist (the people from the town your in) have a stand too. sometimes it's more like a flea market.
In Siero on Tuesday, one part of the market is exactly like the one you were in there but. in the middle of my town there is another place with vegetables, flowers, cheese, chorizo, etc. Also there's a livestock auction in the livestock market, it's really huge but I've never been inside. (hundreds of animals)
The women with the hair I seen before, I think in Leon but it could have been the Rototom Sunsplash in Valencia.
I think stu this series is a stroke of genius because small towns is interesting alongside the history in Northern Ireland we have our town centres to the north and south also with countryside looking forward to more small Spanish towns in the future all the best

It's great but that's just the normal way of life and nothing unusual.
Sort of sadness. I hate to see all the small towns dying slowly. The elderly still post handwritten letters, buy newspapers and don't have idea of what internet is. The only youngh has no idea about melons on the other hand
So true. I have some very elderly neighbours in my village in Malaga and they can't even read or write. The TV channel is set to Canal Sur and that is it. I've been to hundreds of these places though, especially in Castile and La Mancha. This particular example isn't that bad in comparison to some. The population in many of these places is just a few hundred people as I'm sure you know. I've been to places even smaller where the population is even below 100. I actually enjoy sleepy, small town Spain. I think tourists that only visit 'event' places such as cities really miss out. However, I understand why most of them don't visit towns and villages like this because they are usually very restricted for time.
Oddly enough, the young influx into cities has driven up prices so much that I observe many going back to towns and villages because of lower house prices and commuting. That's in Andalusia at least. The demographic collapse in Castile and other regions is really diminishing these places like you say.
I don't know if you saw Almodovar's Parallel Mothers but there's a wonderful scene which encapsulates what you say about young and old. It involves the older and younger mothers who are preparing a tortilla. The young woman, who is a whizz with social media, has to be shown how to peel a potato by the older (middle aged) woman. Social media addiction is widespread in Spain and many young Spaniards are, I believe, becoming disconnected from their past (a very complicated past) except in a shallow and superficial way. Cheers. This is a typical small Spanish town away from tourist areas or the coast . Life is slow with only elderly people about enjoying the sun or meeting a few friends . The lack of trees always shocks me and no effort by council to make towns like these pretty and attractive for business with flowers fountains etc . However , it was clean and tidy . And the people were quite friendly and wanted to engage in conversation. Hope the melon was good . BTW I love melon with jamón Serrano . It’s delicious

Seems like you need to need hit a gym or more walking vlogs. I've been there myself, after 50 it gets harder. I really like your vlogs as much as current updates from your office but it doesn't looks good when you get tired grasping for air after few hours walking flat terrain. A few young families from Latin America would be right at home in these abandoned and dying towns, but would they be welcomed with open arms?!

Stu thank you. I took the train up from Sevilla to Lora Del Rio to visit the cemetery and honour the war dead from the civil war last November.
Very disappointed
The town was so depressing
Couldn’t wait to get back to Sevilla.
It’s not what I saw in the 80s on my first visit to Spain.
I will always return, however very sad.
I’m afraid the world is changing even here in Canada.
I been many times to Spain and will return again in December.

Hi Stuart, I'm enjoying your small town videos in the Madrid Community , I am at the moment in one myself, Fuente El Saz de Jarama, just north east of Madrid, visiting our daughter, love this little town. Can't believe how hot it still is but at least not as humid as where we live on Ibiza. Just spent 4 days in Salamanca, what a beautiful town. keep up the good work, maybe one day we will meet in a street somewhere for a beer, just not a midi in Hillarys Boat Harbour or Mindarie Keys, 😂🤣😂🤣

After watching the video I am craving for melons now! Stu, in your opinion was the mochuelo variant tastier than others? Does their fame live up to expectations? I might stop by Villaconejos and buy it. By the way, wild rabbits made a big comeback, around Madrid there are so many now. I know a fine restaurant that serves wild rabbit, but as it is wild the meat is rather sinewy and tough.
Her hair was beautiful and if you notice, she had it in a rubber band at the end because it must've hit the ground! Very interesting tour. Thank you.

I'm hoping there are many more of these little tours to come. My son went crazy on watermelons in Benidorm. He loved them. But he didn't enjoy going to the toilet every five mins afterwards, lol.

We've been walking the camino de santiago for the last 4 weeks and have come across lots of these type towns especially in the Meseta. I assume the towns are dying because the youth have left and the older houses are falling down

It's still the same as always, You haven't really seen ONCE. ONCE stands for National Organization of the Spanish Blind people and the guys selling the lottery in those stands are blind running their own business. The name of those stands is "el kiosco de la ONCE"
Living in Puente Genil Cordoba I believe your wife is from here. Its time you brought her home. Get a free tapas with every drink. Two large vino blancos
and two lage beers for 8 euros.All large supermarkets and masses of bars every where. We even have a Michelin restaurant. It's time to visit Puente Genil.
The rabbits are used in the paella that they cook in Spain. Maybe that's why you could see any.

Villaconejos is statistically the municipality in the Community of Madrid with the lowest income per capita.
However, their melons are delicious, the best.

Mostly, the buildings look in good nick…to me! Also, streets are extremely clean.

I'll give you credit where credit's due, it takes some big COJONES to go around these small Spanish towns on your own with a camera, filming and giving commentary in English. Your Spanish is exceptional too plus your people interaction skills. Just out of curiosity, have you had any trouble from locals when you got out on your filmed tours?
Well you certainly don’t know much about Spain ! Nobody is going to attack you nor mug you for filming in their small towns . People are just curious and want to engage in any conversation with whoever passes through the town and is willing to have a chat .
This is Spain not Honduras (apologies to my Honduran brethren). Why do you need 'COJONES' to walk around with a camera and talk in English? You can talk in whatever language you like in Spain.

Yes, you have to have their permission to show their faces. Without permission you are supposed to obscure their features. Spain has strict privacy laws about filming in public.
