    In about 1995 i was waiting for a vacant platform outside Victoria with an eight car networker (465) with a Dartford via Bexleyheath to Victoria service and could tell that passengers were getting restless. I called signals control to find out what the delay was? I was told that we were being re-platformed as we were waiting for a charter being pulled by steam engine Sir Nigel Gresley to get up a head of steam. I made an annoucement that we were going into platform three and the steam engine was to our right on platform two. You could feel the whole train lurch as everybody crossed over for a look as i crept in slower than normal so everybody had a good look. It was probably the best ever excuse i gave for a late arrival. I had no complaints from passengers and a few compliments as well. To quote Pink Floyd, "Obscured by Clouds", but sounds absolutely amazing.

    Great movie showing Southern steam. I used to travel into Victoria station every day for work in the 1960's. It was such a shock to see the decay of the approach in to one of London's main line stations. The weeds have turned into trees in the 6 ft way, litter and untidiness every where. When I travelled to and from Victoria every weekend day the railway lines and track bed were clean and tidy and well maintained, and there was one corporate colour, SR green. Today the emu's are all painted in different corporate rainbow colours, nothing matches. Perhaps they are painted that way disguise any confetti attacks. London's buses are all painted red, even though operated by different companies, London's different tube lines are all pained in similar corporate colours, so why aren't all the emu's that operate to and from the main line railway stations from destinations south of the Thames, all be painted in one common regional green livery.

    Interesting stuff. Some very unusual views of Victoria. I don't know the place too well but don't know if I'd have recognised it from there. Clever choice of shot too, getting both diesels and both kettles from the same spot. That 33 did well up the bank too. With them looking so similar to the 26/27s, it's easy to forget the power they have when needed.
    Some weird smoke effects in that last scene too. I've never seen a Southern pacific in the flesh, impressive machine.😁👍

    • @iandocwra1169
      @iandocwra1169  3 роки тому +1

      I think the billowing smoke effect in the last shot was caused by the regulator being shut to control a slight slip and the consequent drawing through of residual ash and smoke.

    On the Central side one pair of platforms has a middle crossover. I wonder why they couldn't run round there instead of using a diesel to shunt the stock.

    • @iandocwra1169
      @iandocwra1169  3 роки тому +1

      Steam specials are only allowed to use the Eastern side as the Central side is treated as 'section 12' - i.e. effectively underground and with smoke detectors. Also, the diesel remained attached all day to power the workings in one direction while steam did the other.

  • @MrJohnberth
    @MrJohnberth 3 роки тому +1

    Why a diesel always being towed?

    • @iandocwra1169
      @iandocwra1169  3 роки тому +1

      The diesel brings in the stock from Southall for the first run of the day (the 0931 from Victoria) which is steam-hauled throughout around a loop via Olympia, Willesden and Richmond. The second and third trips are out-and-back to Willesden and the diesel takes it on the outward legs, with steam on the return.

    Excellent camera handling, most enjoyable. What equipment were you using as a matter of interest?

    • @iandocwra1169
      @iandocwra1169  3 роки тому

      Very kind, thanks. I use a Canon EOS R5 and a Sony RX10mk4. Both are 4K cameras, and the Canon is actually 8K, but until YT (and most other sites/users) can accommodate 8K, I don't use it. On top of that, my current MacBookPro doesn't handle the huge data flow well, but I have my eye on the new model which is specifically designed, among other things, to accommodate 8K. Apart from the video quality it's possible to extract frames from 8K video which are very high quality stills, to the extent that some people simply take bursts of vdeos for moving subjects and then extract the shots they want.
      I owe my camera handling traits largely to my late father who taught me, for example, how to frame, compose and use as little fast zooming as possible.

    Why a diesel engine at the same time ???

    • @iandocwra1169
      @iandocwra1169  3 роки тому

      The train with 'Braunton' at the country end was brought in by Class 47 D1944 (which stayed attached around the Surrey hills circuit), while the train brought in by 'Mayflower' had 33207 at its country end. 33207 then took that train out again, to reverse at Willesden to allow 'Mayflower' to head back to Victoria again.

      The diesel is 'assisting' and therefore vital in its role.

    • @iandocwra1169
      @iandocwra1169  3 роки тому

      @@railfreightdrivergallagherGBRf Actually the 47 was silent on the departure and provided no traction assistance - of course it would have done if really needed, but I imagine the private charter's instructions were to let steam take the load wherever possible. The same was the case later on the climbs of the Surrey hills.

    • @railfreightdrivergallagherGBRf
      @railfreightdrivergallagherGBRf 3 роки тому

      @@iandocwra1169 There to assist, not actually assisting at the time. It's what we do. There is two way radio between crews top & tail, and it's down to the leading driver to require assistance if needed. As a main line registered steam driver, its plain common sense. These old steam locos do remarkable work.

    • @iandocwra1169
      @iandocwra1169  3 роки тому

      @@railfreightdrivergallagherGBRf Absolutely. What was unusual here was that no assistance was given up Grosvenor bank, which is very rare for steam leaving Victoria, when the diesel either drops off on the bridge or stays on the back. The same was true of the 33-led train which had 'Mayflower' 'dead' at the back - with 1550hp and the equivalent of 14 coaches on 1 in 70, that was even more remarkable.
