Never considered using the gradient filter that way, awesome tip!
Glad you dig it!
Thanks so much for showing me how to make my photos glow without taking it into photo shop. And thanks for you clear and detailed instructions that made it possible for even a beginner like me to understand.
There are great photographers & then there are great teachers. Very few are masters of both. You Joshua reign supreme in this elite list. Keep on shining & illuminating everyone with your knowledge & skills.
Super - I have looked at a number of videos and articles about the Orton Effect but always felt they were over-complicating the process. This nails it - giving an explanation and then running through it again as a kind of summary is a classic teaching method and works perfectly here.
Wow! Once you see it done, it’s so simple you wonder why you never tumbled to it. Can’t wait for the next opportunity to use this. Thanks.
I just wanted to add some glow into my photos and not only i just learned about the orton effect but i learned a lot about lightroom. Thank you very much for this tutorial this gave me a lot of tools to mess around
Thanks Joshua! That was awesome! Can't wait to try it
I love the gradient filter tip. Thanks!

I've never seen your technique before. Thanks for sharing!
Great tutorial Josh! I never thought of starting my grads above or below the image. Thank you for that! :)
My pleasure! There may be better ways to accomplish the same thing, but this is easy and fast for sure.
Thnx! Been looking everywhere for this! Orton glow! Ill try to remember:)
Thanks for this tutorial....
It's going to help a lot... ❤️❤️😮😮❤️

Well done...this is an amazing process and very simple to use!
It really is!
Genial and easy!!
Hi Joshua. What a superb tutorial. Stunning effects that blokes like me haven’t learned yet and you stepped up to show us something very special, I will be practicing and learning this technique from tomorrow on. Thank you very much. Stay safe and well.
Happy to help!
Joshua, thanks for turning easier for us with this wizard trick. The key point, as I see, is the use of the luminance mask in the graduated filter tool.
Glad it was helpful! And yes, it's all about that Luminance Range Mask
I would like to see this Orton Effect, as I know the name of the effect now (THX!), on a portrait picture with a nature background. Maybe you can make a video on that for I think we will have to take care of other aspects to maybe not overdue this on the face of a subject. I have seen magically photos, not only making them glow but also look a bit vintage. Great cool trick. Enjoyed watching it. LIKE!
Hi Joshua: Thanks for developing this video. This tip is brilliant! Is there any other opportunity to make additional videos on tools that would normally be done in PS but can now be done within LR? If so, I think that would make a remarkable series of training videos. Cheers, Keith (Canada)
Well done, 🍻
Fabulous
Glad you enjoy it.
Excellent instruction. Thank you. Josh
Thanks for watching!
Haven’t finished my coffee & my brain is already full. Great tutorial Josh!
Cheers!
I've always done this in Photoshop, nice to see a technique in Lightroom. Good to have the option to not have to roundtrip to Photoshop.
Yep, totally agree. I like to stay in LR if I can. Though THB I still prefer the look when doing this in PS.
Amazing tip I was thinking using the radial filter. Never thought about the graduated and putting it above the image
You could def use the radial as well to localize the adjustment even more if you wanted.
Genius!
Thanks man!
You're the first person I've come across that does it *almost* the same way as me. Brother!! 😀 I use a few other sliders to dial it in and have it saved as local adjustment preset, then just adjust the total effect by collapsing the panel and tweaking with the Amount slider. Glad I did my how-to video last month or everyone would say I just stole it from you. lol
As my Statics professor would say when I was in college: there are 16 different ways to solve every problem. Good idea with the preset. :)
@@JoshuaCrippsPhotography maybe so but our way of using Luminance range masks is best. 😉
Wow, this just blew me away. Always thought I had to go into Ps to do the Orton, and for an image with simple edits, I'd get lazy and not do it at all. Not anymore!!
I imagine you could take the brush tool while still in grad grad filter mode, click erase, and remove that effect from areas you don't want it.
This is awesome, thanks Josh!
Thank you! Have fun!
Wow can’t wait to try this, it’ll save me so much time if I don’t have to go into photoshop
Glad it's helpful!
Nice one made look easy.🙂👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Joshua: how has this process changed with the latest 2022 vers. of Lightroom. A wise message about being subtle. Thank you.
I really love the glow effect in snapspeed. Any idea how to replicate it in ps?
They also has a bw wash effect that is just stunning for portraits.
I need to replicate it in ps for efficiency.
Thanks for that. Would you ever use this with a gradient or radiant filter, or do you restrict it to the whole image?
Forget it, I kept watching 😆
Would this work with portraits as well??
Gradient filter outside the photo, that's thinking outside the box. :)
So that's the as in Ps?
For some reason the range tab doesn’t appear for me when the gradient mask is applied. Don’t know if this a problem with a new version update or something else. Anyone else having the same problems?
I found the same thing and then done a 'help' search for range mask in the program. I'm not certain yet but it seems that LR have included range masks as a separate entity in the tools section >tools>create new mask>luminosity range. This video is two years old now so updates seems to have altered things. Hope this helps, though I stand to be corrected.
Orton effect without PhotoShop, who knew?! Great method, Josh. Would this work equally well with a full frame radial filter?
I *think* so, though you might get some falloff around the corners.
use luminar =)
I use this exact same thing for my black and white commercial prints - soft but sharp - I call it the 'Leica magic' for those who have not heard of it but do know Leica - although I use Hass 907x!!!!
Complicated
Wanna instant Orton effect? Easy! Buy a Fuji camera! Fuji raf/jpg file has that ugly painty texture oit of the box! 😃
