Often find myself agreeing with Simon and I have a soft spot for Barcelona but I’m completely on Frenkie’s side here. He deferred part of his wage, he’s owed that wage. Not to mention the fact Barcelona are being linked with £50m for Raphinha and £45m for Lewandowski. Club had turned into a laughing stock which is sad to see.

This news that broke out now didn’t come from the player neither from its agent stating it’s the deffered wages that is stopping him from leaving the club.
The Barca Board and de jong agent haven’t had any formal meeting recently with regards to FDJ so I don’t know why the Press is pouncing on the deffered wages as it is the issue now? Unless some party benefits from this.
This news takes away attention from man utd and their negotiating team and places the focus mainly on Barcelona and Frenkie de jong. Yeah right; don’t you smell the foul play too.

Barcelona seem utterly unwilling to make small sacrifices in the face of the total debt they're under. The club also refuses to accept the long term approach to stabilisation by not wanting to buy every player they fancy just like before, without creative accounting just like before.

To start. You speak of Barca in different timelines. I understand you clubs are privately own clubs and the player doesn’t changer. As for Barca; The players are not thesame.
The Barca that bought those big money signings and impose those crazy wages are not there anymore. This is a new regime.

The debts you speak of are mostly long term debts.
Short terms debts are the ones been taken care of by the sales of some assets “economic levers” which will bring normalcy back to the club interms of FFP.

Not all of those players will be negotiated for and not all negotiated player will be gotten. So why are you stressed???
Barcelona wouldn’t be selling unless they were receiving most of if not all the transfer fee upfront, so FDJ has every right to want what he’s owed out of the deal especially considering he’s being forced out the club and doesn’t want to leave.

they are not keeping the funds, they can't legally to that, they have a contract. they will be negotiating terms of repayment i.e. the payment of schedule and interest owed, as Simon points out.
@@graemewallace8868 keeping in mind, i have not seen the actual contract, there are early termination clauses standard to all contracts. Generally if the player "intends" to leave on his own then he is perceived to trigger the clause, which could release them from payment on the deferred wages. The player likewise is generally guaranteed payment if the client (Barca) defaults on the contract for early termination.
Kinda odd logic from Simon, its almost like he feels like he has to have a really strong opinion on everything but gets it wrong a fair few times.
Barca seem to be destroying their reputation with clubs. LaPorta lying about De Jong for sale, publicly thanking Lewandowski "for his efforts to get a deal done" and leaving bayern... He hasn't necessarily done them a favour. He has taken the same premium over longer payment term at interest. He gets paid more over a longer term as a result. Given Barca's financial difficulties they will have to offer higher rates of interest than the market (as they are at higher risk of default), so he likely ends up making quite a bit more. Simon is trying to lay out the financial intricacies of what has happened which Jim keeps shouting over.
I think when United first went in for this player they were unaware of the situation. And only later after further negotiations found out circumstances. The initial bid was around 60 mil this got United interested only to find out they wanted more until it appears 70 mil is now the decided figure I think this figure has come down from 80 mil My thoughts were that Barca were looking at United to cover this debt , by telling De Jong agent to over value this player but telling De Jong your only worth 60 and we pocket the rest and feed this money back to you over period of time . I simply think now the dispute is with Barca and the player and agent. I guess at this point United have said this debt owed is not ours to pay we offer a fair price.

Not a Man Utd fan but it’s going to be difficult to try to attract champions league players to the Europa league and not be challenging for domestic silverware. Ten Hag has came in like many before him with the label of being the one to turn the club around, They’ve got too many players who simply aren’t going to get you to the level you need to be at to compete, Fred, Shaw, Maguire, Bissaka, the list could go on. Jose said finishing 2nd in the 17/18 season with the Man Utd squad he has was the greatest achievement of his career so far, people thought it was tongue in cheek but he was right.

United are running a philanthropic organisation at this stage.
This is where Simon is gold. Jim is taking an approach to business like he's managing a household budget. As Simon points outs the deferred money will be paid back at a rate of interest that will almost certainly be ahead of returns in the current market. As such Frenkie is making more through deferral. He also points out that these decision are for short term financial reasons and that if this payment was paid in a oner, Barca make nothing this year (when in crisis) on a balance sheet and thus have no incentive to sell. These are very important points that Jim is ignoring through ignorance of how finance and business operations work.
Nonsense. It's not in Barcelona's gift to just unilaterlly decide how to repay a debt.
There was a contract. Barca offered that contract, no one held a gun ro their heads.
Then due to the Clubs failure to meet thier contractual committment, the player agreed to tow years of deferrals.
Now, when Barca are auctioning off bits of their TV money to raise capital and using that capital to offer to buy NEW players, the player wants what is owed, and Barca have the gall to suggest ANOTHER DEFERRAL
The player has every right to insist on being paid what he is owed. Taking another deferral is a risk, given recent history, who knows what financial situation Barca will be on in 1 or 2 years time, whereas they are boasting about raising €200m+ from the TV auction, so I'd take what is owed now.
Further, you and Simon have no idea what return on that €17 capital the player could be making... you don't know what investments he has or how they are managed... but I can't tell you that very few millionaires who have asset managers are making 1.5% on the open market.
@@benk79 People don't make gentleman's agreements over 17m pounds, they sign contracts, contracts which if aren't honoured would be legally enforced.
The major US indexes are down 20% this year, so if you know an asset manager who has made a positive return on investment this year, do share their details.

The stock market as a total is down, but not all classes of assest are down (for example... if you were invested in Oil, you'd be doing quite well recently)... and as I state, it's not in the gift of someone who owes you a debt to unilaterlly renege on an agreement and then decide how they want to repay (and cite average returns on assets as a way to restructure(... of course they can propose it, but the person who is owed the debt needs to agree... and as they want him to leave, he's completely within his rights to insist on being paid what he is contractually owed.
I hope Jim White is just playing Devil's advocate in this conversation because it would be a shame if he's as daft as he sounds here. Simon's point is clear and logical but Jim seemed not the hearing him.
Barca clearly need to sell him, and I suspect he doesn't want to join United because he will be joining a shambles of a club and he won't be playing CL football next season.

Well, 10% may not be high enough interest rate for someone with Barcelona’s credit score. Simon wouldn’t lend his money to just anyone. While Frankie was tied with the contract, he had a certain leverage, and if Barcelona defaulted he would get free of a contract and probably be able to get whole with a sign on fee with another club. If he moves and Barcelona goes under, he gets nothing. So, it is fully within his right to say that he is not the bank, if they need financing, they should get a loan at the bank and just pay him.
That’s the problem - they’re buried in debt. They can’t take on any more loans

Eventually you will not have a house to remortgage! If he didn’t love Barca; he won’t have deffered his wages. Other high earners like griezman, countinho didn’t do that.
He genuinely loves the club but the board doesn’t want him to stay for many reasons.
First and foremost; he is not Laporta signing and his contract is outrageous which needs to be readjusted otherwise he stands no chance of staying and to be honest. The board don’t even that.
Secondly; he has been inconsistent in his performance last season due to many reasons like playing positions, confidence, team form etc
Thirdly; he has a lot of value in the market because he is a good player and the risk of youngsters like gavi makes him dispensable.
So it’s perfect time to cash out on the player.
If he comes to man utd and loves man utd; what a player you have in your hands.
But Barcelona aren't saying that, that are trying to either sell him or reduce his contract permanent from 89m to around 24m in 4 years. They aren't trying to negotiation a way out. They tryna keep him there with a take it or leave it offer because they know that FDJ wants to stay
I can understand de Jong wanting his money upfront; he agreed to defer his wages but can he trust Barcelona to actually any agreement to pay those wages over a period of time? Barcelona made an approach to Leeds for Raphinha at a vastly undervalued price. Leeds rejected it and told them the price. Barcelona then tried to negotiate deferred payments. For some reason Leeds have said they want all the money up front. This is not normal in football so both de Jong and his agent must be wondering why Leeds wanted all their money in one go, do Leeds have concerns about Barcelona's ability to pay the fee in deferred payments?

If Barca go into administration, he wouldn’t get a penny of that money. By helping keep them afloat, he helps himself by extension to continue being paid and get the deficit payed later. Not that complicated.

There is no guarantee that the Barcelona everyone knows, will financially survived & not go bankrupt in the next 2 years, so if they are trying to sell him, them 100% he should get what he is owed, they need to take the 17 million they owe him out of the first instalment of the fee that has been agreed, or keep him any pay him properly

Barca can pay his wages but his wages increases 40% next season.
If he stays he will become the highest paid player in the squad but Barca have wagebill problem so they are trying to implement strict wage limits on every player. The max salary cap by player is 10mil. De jong would be on almost 20mil.
So he can’t stay unless his contract is readjusted. That’s the reason why Barca wants to sell him and the deal is being held up by Barca because they want to sell at their own terms when the FFp restrictions is lifted.
The deffered wages will be paid to him; it’s under contract no doubt.
The question is the board hasn’t outrightly told FDJ to leave and we all know he wants to stay. Hence why there isn’t too many news from the player side.
He can fight the move if he wants to since he is on a long contract but for his love and respect of the club; he will leave immediately the club tells him to which will be done when he comes back from his holiday or if his agent meets with the club.
FDJ is on holiday and the board has not had meetings with his agents so why is the English media saying it’s deffered wages holding up the deal.

FDJ's camp is probably worried that given the way Barca is still spending, you had better get your money now (e.g out of the transfer fee United pays for him) or there won't be a Barca to ask for money in the future or at least they go into some form of administration where FDJ has to then negotiate and then only get a portion of his deferred payments.
