I still remember the day I first saw a Gameboy. My friend was playing Super Mario Land in December, 1989. I thought it was the most amazing thing. A year later I got one of my own with 3 games: Tetris, Castlevania Adventure and Paperboy. Classics!
i was in a hospital for 2 weeks when the game boy came out. it really made my time easier there. i remember also playing trough super mario land together with my bed neighbour
I've had Pokemon: Blue Version since I was 4 and I still play it 15 years later. I remember where everything is to this day. I agree that it should be number one. It's still fun to play.
I really enjoyed Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. It is a great game with funny characters and interesting use of level design. Not just a side scroller
Batteries! seriously, for people like me who never bought rechargeables, when we are busy playing, the screen goes still and fades out. right in the middle of battling the elite on Pokemon Red.
Gargoyle Quest was one of my favorite games ever. I loved how you built up your ability to fly as the game went on. Oh man, it would be fun to play that one again
It's amazing that Game Boy had my 2 favorite puzzle games ever: Tetris and Mario's Picross. I think the Game Boy TMNT game deserved some honorable-mention love, too.
Legend of zelda: link's aweakening would be my top 1. The plot of the game is so perfect. Is, without a doubt, one of the best games i've ever played in all consoles
Guille VQ I got a tic 84 plus ce calculator and started playing gameboy games for the first time on it and even though I’m used to big rpgs like fallout 4 or Skyrim I think links awakening is still a good game. Its so fun going out to accomplish something or trying to get an item in it and I think it’s ahead of its time.
Link's Awakening was one of my favorite games of all time and I think is the most underrated of the Zelda series. Not to mention, it was good enough to get a reboot for the Gameboy Color.
I remember red and blue, they were my first pokemon games same as millions of others and to me still hold up, They set the bar that few games in general have been able to match and Ill never forget the first time I turned on the old brick and was taken to a world I desperately wanted to be real.
I'm glad that Pokémon Red and Blue got to #1! One fact is that these weren't the first ever Pokémon games released. They were just the first ones released outside of Japan. Before Red and Blue got released, Japan got Red and Green, and a standalone Blue. When the international versions were made, they used the general idea of Red and Green combined with the engine for Blue.
+Rosie Leigh Zee No way lol. We were way to poor. I barely had enough batteries. I would steal from the remote or whatever I could find lol. I did use the link when my rich friend came over.
Man, this one's a good list. So much nostalgia. So many hidden gems that are forgotten amongst the modern games. Enough people remember old genesis and NES games, but not everyone played old gameboy. The system limitations of the gameboy... I really want to see some of these games get some modern day recognition in a remake. Enough games get remastered and re-released 50 times over. I'd love to see some fresh love for Link's awakening for everyone who missed it. Same for Metroid II, everyone knows the original, and Super Metoid, but II was an overlooked masterpiece. And gargoyle's quest, damn that was a great game. Funny note, I've long been a Kirby fan since that first game. When the second one came out I didn't know you could copy abilities in it till about halfway though the game when I swallowed an enemy by accident. I was trying to go through the whole game with the same swallow and spit gameplay from the first one!

When I saw Tetris at No. 2, I wondered, what could possibly be No. 1? Upon seeing Pokemon, it makes senses. That said, I bought my original Gameboy overseas in Haifa while deployed in the Navy. The only reason I did: No. 2, Tetris!
dude, I had something like gameboy, but it was long, and it only had 1 game, which is a small tank at the bottom of the screen, and I had to move it from obstacles, and sometimes it had tetris, something it had an airplane shooting stuff, do you know what is?
I loved & was a huge fan of Super Mario Land on the Nintendo Game boy & I played it religiously in the past when I owned it. I also loved & was a huge fan of "Tetris" as it became a good development tool to train you to be a better bagger at a grocery store. I use to own & played "Gargoyles Quest" but that game was difficult & weird to me but it was sort of fun playing it.
Great list. Well, Dream Land 2 is definitely better than 1. I'm so glad to see Donkey Kong on here. I really want to see more Mario games like this. The puzzle solving using that giant key is lots of fun to figure out and all the interesting features liking constructing temporary bridges and ladders.
My Favorite Gameboy Games are 1. Tetris 2.Super Mario Land 2 6 Golden Coins 3. Metroid 2 Return Of Samus 4.Kirby`s Dream Land 5.Pokemon Red And Blue 6. Tiny Toon Adventures: Babs Big Break 7. The Legend of Zelda Link`s Awakening 8.The New Chessmaster 9.Warioland Super Mario Land 3 10.Mario Picross
Wow, that's not broken. More like annihilated or obliterated. I'm sorry for your tragic loss T_T you could still get one for cheap on Ebay at least...I'd even help make sure it worked for ya ^^
While watching this video I was like, "Pokemon better be on this list pokemon better be on this list!!!!! >,< " and it was #1~ I'm glad my childhood game is still well remembered.

Pokemon is a overhyped childrens fad. Unless you were 8 when it came out it was crap. It shouldn't be at number 1 and it has nothing to do with sanity.
Moon McNugget honestly, today, pokemon isn't really much to talk about, but at the time, it was pushing huge boundaries for hand held video games, and videogames in general. No other game in the past had anywhere near as much content as this, I mean, it has 150 (151) playable characters (for the sake of this argument that's what im calling them). And like she said, it had a huge amount of re-playability like no other game before it, with the introduction of mechanics such as trading pokemon and catching legendaries. Pokemon R&B really took games to where they'd never been before and really set the standard for games to come. Like she said, it sold 32 million copies, which is a big enough feat as it it, not to mention it was at the end of the gameboys life span!
Oh my days, Dr. Mario! Catchy music, easy to understand concept... even my mother understood how to play it and used to hijack my NES for hours! I was a happy, yet sad young lad... :D
I've sold all my Gameboy games, except for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. The best Gameboy Games accross all versions of the device in my opinion is without contest Golden Sun 1+2 for the GBA though.
Andrew Whalen If you're 21 now you were most def not a teenager when Pokémon came out... you were more like 7, did you really smoke & chase girls at that age?
Brandon Whittaker I have to agree on that. WatchMojo.com should make Top 10 Gameboy Color Games. Gameboy Colors games like Pokemon Gold and Silver were great.
+Brandon Whittaker probably because the game boy colour was not very different the only change with the game boy colour was well colour it played game boy games in colour (the colour remakes) and all it really was is a game boy that plays in colour that's it although there were a very small handful of original games for it
Pretty good list, and love the honorable mentions. Screw color, the Gameboy had some very epic games for it. Some pretty good one I'd like to mention, that is very obscure is "Mole Mania." If you love Zelda, and/or the Gameboy Donkey Kong (mentioned here) then you'll love Mole Mania, as it's probably the most overlooked game created by Shigeru Miyamoto. It's a very good action puzzle game, with clever gimmicks, and very clever (yet not impossible, as I beat the game) puzzles. Has a good soundtrack for a Gameboy game to, and some clever boss battles. It's only 3 dollars in the 3DS Eshop, so give it a buy/download. You might be quite surprised. (It starts off a bit easy, but gets very good & challenging as you go on.)
I have had a Gameboy, a Gameboy Color, a Gameboy Advance, a DS and plan on getting either the 3DS or 2DS and I have never, EVER owned/played a single pokemon game.
GoMhaaad Maybe. I think I might have been too old already by the time Pokémon came out though. There also wasn't any Pokémon around me. The little kids did it. As I understand it, the whole Pokémon craze was very much a social activity.
My first handheld console was the Gameboy colour. And the first game I got was Pokemon Crystal. I will never forget the countless hours of fun I spent on it.
Marc 8 I actually think it's the exact opposite. I can never get enough tetris but pokemon is fun for a while but once your pokemon are pretty much unstoppable it starts to get boring.

Mario Land 2 is infinitely superior to the first one.
Sener, well said.
Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons >>>>>>>>
That's bs
@@Isaac-jm2ht so much better
I agree!
Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge IS actually one of the best Castlevania games, it's just so damn good.
Mario Land 2 and Wario Land >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mario Land
Wario Land is the best because it's a unique concept. ML2 plays like a washed down Mario 3, with some original ideas. (I liked the space levels)
+Jonathan BarSela Space levels
Hubblebub Lumbubwub Have
I've had Pokemon: Blue Version since I was 4 and I still play it 15 years later. I remember where everything is to this day. I agree that it should be number one. It's still fun to play.
In some lists, there is just no suprise in which is going to be #1.
Link's Awakening is my #1. :P
Hylian Jim i love that one
I just beat that game today, and I have to agree, it's my favorite game of all time now.
Oh man, it would be fun to play that one again
super mario land 2 was better than 1
Agreed
Everyone knows that….atleast I thought.
Only got an hon mention 😡. I played that more then Gameboy game back in the day
Ahh Pokemon Red/Blue Version. Such Good Memories. Yellow Was A Nice Add To The Series Too
It's amazing that Game Boy had my 2 favorite puzzle games ever: Tetris and Mario's Picross.
I think the Game Boy TMNT game deserved some honorable-mention love, too.
Legend of zelda: link's aweakening would be my top 1. The plot of the game is so perfect. Is, without a doubt, one of the best games i've ever played in all consoles

FF Legend 2 was insanely good.
Alec Marshall I totally agree with you. The plot of the game is so perfect and the game's finale is breathtaking

I think links awakening should have got it but hey... they both deserve to be high up on the list.
DankChiken Wangz I expected Tetris to be number 1
it pissed me of
I remember red and blue, they were my first pokemon games same as millions of others and to me still hold up, They set the bar that few games in general have been able to match and Ill never forget the first time I turned on the old brick and was taken to a world I desperately wanted to be real.

Kintuse yep
Jordan Naish how could u not guess those 2 honestly.
YES WATCHMOJO IS BACK! I MISSED YOU GUYS!
Super Mario Land got picked over the sequel??? Have you played SML????
SERIOUSLY!!! SML2 is my 5th favorite Video Game of all time. Great game!
However, SML1... yeah, uhhh, that game sucked.
Sml 2 is the best
No, both are masterpieces in their own right. Super Mario Land 1 made it because it was much more popular in the store.
And I loved 1, too. I do love 2, but I view them equally, tbh.
But SML was so unique. The music so amazing
I'm glad that Pokémon Red and Blue got to #1! One fact is that these weren't the first ever Pokémon games released. They were just the first ones released outside of Japan. Before Red and Blue got released, Japan got Red and Green, and a standalone Blue. anyone notice that the sandshrew at 5:18 was named Gaara? lol
ahhhh gameboy! when I was little I always brought at least 10 gb games with me to the bus :) great memories!
time to replay it! :D
OMG!!!! The feels!!! The feels!! Thank you WatchMojo for this list!!
Wario land was fucking AWESOME
PanikGrafik Highly agree. Warioland was the my all-time favorite Gameboy game!
+PanikGrafik no, YOU'RE awesome! (hahahah got him, now he'll be offended)
+PanikGrafik It hasn't aged well since if you get hit during the boss fights you have to start over.
NintendoFan 2001 I just feel of all three Mario Land games Wario Land is the weakest of the three for being for being too difficult for it's own good.
+PanikGrafik I like Wario Land 2 better though
we all know pokemon was gonna b at top
This list was perfect, well done! *Nostalgia*
nice catch on that zapdos!
Metroid 2 should be higher...cmon, the queen fight was epic....plus it set the stage to one of the best SNES games ever...
I play pokemon so much, the batteries in my gameboy leaked battery acid on my hands.
+Sean McClung did you also have the battle cable where you have to hook up a shitty USB-like cable to fight/trade with your homies...
+Rosie Leigh Zee No way lol. We were way to poor. I barely had enough batteries. I would steal from the remote or whatever I could find lol. I did use the link when my rich friend came over.
Sean McClung I don't think those kinds of batteries leak
So you never played it and just left the batteries in it?
whats the best game? red green, blue or yellow?
I seriously NEEDED to see this. I ordered a custom GB online and I wanted some new games to go with it, the hunt begins!
completely agree, Pokemon is legend
Yeah
I don't expect it to be in many peoples top 10, but Kirby Pinball got me through a lot of road trips as a kid.
Pokemon pinball was fun too
for once, i agree with you. Pokemon is the best!
+Omega Cloud
I've done the research. Pokemon Alpha and Omega.

Funny note, I've long been a Kirby fan since that first game. When the second one came out I didn't know you could copy abilities in it till about halfway though the game when I swallowed an enemy by accident. I was trying to go through the whole game with the same swallow and spit gameplay from the first one!
My top 10 favourites are
1: Legend of Zelda link's awakening
2: Super Mario Land 2
3: Castlevania the adventure 2 Belmont's revenge
4: Metroid 2
5: Kirby's dreamland
6: Pokemon red and blue
7: Operation C
8: Tetris
9: Final Fantasy the legend 2
10: Gargoyle's quest
Pokemon better be number one
It's either that or Tetris.
Why? It should be Wario Land.
***** Yellow was a bit of a letdown.
RSOmniscient why?
Dean Mohan No sadly. Its call of duty
Frick yea, number 1! My favorites never make it to the top of this list, but then again, I don't think anybody can really argue with this one.
When I saw Tetris at No. 2, I wondered, what could possibly be No. 1? Upon seeing Pokemon, it makes senses. That said, I bought my original Gameboy overseas in Haifa while deployed in the Navy. The only reason I did: No. 2, Tetris!
The portable rules in the during deployments doesn't it.
well i joined facebook for Tetris Battle too! :D
well now I don't have to watch this video
dude, I had something like gameboy, but it was long, and it only had 1 game, which is a small tank at the bottom of the screen, and I had to move it from obstacles, and sometimes it had tetris, something it had an airplane shooting stuff, do you know what is?
+rebbeca hart wasn't number one already easy to predict?
Metroid 2: Return of Samus is such a good game, glad it made the list. I also agree Super Mario Land 2 should of been on the list as well!
Why does no one ever remember Pokémon Yellow? I love the hell outta that game.
That's probably in the Game Color list.
Didn't forget. Just don't care.
;)
Glad to see Link's Awakening make this list. It's my favorite Zelda game of all time.
Waiting for Pokemon to come up.
Jaeger get off youtube titans are attacking the city
Alejandro Saucedo No >:(
Really well done video, made me want to go back and play them all!
Great list. Well, Dream Land 2 is definitely better than 1.
I'm so glad to see Donkey Kong on here. I really want to see more Mario games like this. The puzzle solving using that giant key is lots of fun to figure out and all the interesting features liking constructing temporary bridges and ladders.
I can't imagine being part of the group who has to decide on these lists.
There must be bloodshed every single time.
My Favorite Gameboy Games are
1. Tetris
2.Super Mario Land 2 6 Golden Coins
3. Metroid 2 Return Of Samus
4.Kirby`s Dream Land
5.Pokemon Red And Blue
6. Tiny Toon Adventures: Babs Big Break
7. The Legend of Zelda Link`s Awakening
8.The New Chessmaster
9.Warioland Super Mario Land 3
10.Mario Picross
when your picture is pokemon but its 4th on your list.....
Why did you choose Dream Land 1 over Dream Land 2? The first one was great, but the second one was such a massive improvement and amazing game.
My brother broke my GameBoy last year and it was one of the most tragic things I have ever experienced.
It could be fixed. What was broken exactly? :(
MrCrono666 He dropped it down cement stairs and it was smashed to pieces.
Wow, that's not broken. More like annihilated or obliterated. I'm sorry for your tragic loss T_T you could still get one for cheap on Ebay at least...I'd even help make sure it worked for ya ^^
You must have a good life then
I can't complain. I like helping out others too ya know?
I was completely floored by how brilliant links awakening was for the little Gameboy
That clip from Donkey Kong stirred something powerful from deep in my forgotten memory!
Of course Pokemon is number one.
While watching this video I was like, "Pokemon better be on this list pokemon better be on this list!!!!! >,< " and it was #1~ I'm glad my childhood game is still well remembered.
Pokemon red, blue, and yellow are awesome
(Im playing pokemon yellow right now :) )

WOOOH POKEMON NUMBER 1 YEH :)
i agree with your list! pokemon was the best fo sho
Warioland! The levels are flawless, it controls prefectly and is funny as hell with tons of replay value (6 endings).
I’m glad Donkey Kong Land III was on the list! That is personally my favorite GB game!
I KNEWPokemon was gonna be in the top three!
Wow, crazy guess there, mate.
Tetris
Link's Awakening
Kirby
Killer Instinct
Gargoyle's Quest
Tetris gets a higher spot than Kirby's Dreamland and Link's Awakening? What's wrong with you?
yup. nothing wrong with that list.
Come on, there's no other game as iconic on gameboy than tetris.
exactly!
Glad to see Gargoyle's Quest get some overdue love...I couldn't put that game down!
I loved Maru's Mission! It wasn't stellar, but pretty fun with cool bosses.
When i saw Pokemon as #1 i almost cried great big tears of happiness :)
i'm not the only one then? there was never any doubt that Pokemon had to take top spot~
Wow no 1 is a shocker
I know right.
Nah. Unshockingly horror. Links awakening should be NUMBER ONE
Pokemon Red.
Pokemon Blue
Tetris.
Ha.
I dont get it
the theme played for the #1 slot - rby is "the road to cerulean city"
Here’s my Top 5. 😄
#1: Super Mario Land 2: The 6 Golden Coins
#2: Kirby’s Dreamland 2
#3: Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge
#4: Donkey Kong 94’
#5: Link’s Awakening.
Of course Pokemon tops the list, no sane person would rank it any lower than 1.

Jamie F like I said overhyped.
Somebody lost their mind...
Raul Morales you just keep looking it'll show up, you probably left it on the bus.
Mario Land 2 should be the first followed by Tetris
Zachary Erickson-Truth
Pokemon? Oh hell no! Tetris is the best Gameboy game. It's like the standard when it comes to retro game play.
Tetris is soooo boring
Oh my days, Dr. Mario! Catchy music, easy to understand concept... even my mother understood how to play it and used to hijack my NES for hours! I was a happy, yet sad young lad... :D
I got goosebumps when I saw Kirby... What an amazing game
I've sold all my Gameboy games, except for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. The best Gameboy Games accross all versions of the device in my opinion is without contest Golden Sun 1+2 for the GBA though.
Golden Sun was a badass series. GBA also remade Lunar: Silver Star Story which was also a good game.
The finale of Link's aweakening is so breathtaking, it would be my top 1. And it's in my top 10 of all games of all consoles
TETRIS!! The only game my mom ever played on a GameBoy!
🤔
pokemon is exacaly where it be longs
Nice list. I still haven't finished that Metroid game, but break it out every so often. I can't believe my original Gameboy still works.
Kirby's Dream Land brings back some memories. Awesome game.
All of you pokemon haters. You won't ever understand the impact it had on kids when it came out in the 90s. Some of us still play at the ages of 21+
Andrew Whalen If you're 21 now you were most def not a teenager when Pokémon came out... you were more like 7, did you really smoke & chase girls at that age?
I have it emulated on my android phone, pokemon for ever!
Still playing it till date. The nostalgia never rubs off. I even imported Pokemon Green for the collection haha :)
I really love the Pokémon series , while Red/Blue aren't the best , there still great and important.
pokemon red/blue is the best pokemon ever made, coz newer ones are garbage.
Why not top 10 Gameboy Color games?
Brandon Whittaker I have to agree on that. WatchMojo.com should make Top 10 Gameboy Color Games. Gameboy Colors games like Pokemon Gold and Silver were great.
Brett Ward Donkey kong is not a gbc game. it was being played on a super gameboy.
+Brandon Whittaker That can wait for another time.
+Peter Mei I'm sure they'll do it eventually.
+Brandon Whittaker probably because the game boy colour was not very different the only change with the game boy colour was well colour it played game boy games in colour (the colour remakes) and all it really was is a game boy that plays in colour that's it although there were a very small handful of original games for it
I havent watched the video yet... Pokemon (any version) better be #1
And of course... It is!
You're not wrong
RC Pro AM... man so much time I spent playing that game
Anyone who had a Gameboy has a pokemon game.
Wrong
I have had a Gameboy, a Gameboy Color, a Gameboy Advance, a DS and plan on getting either the 3DS or 2DS and I have never, EVER owned/played a single pokemon game.
Then you're missing out.
That's like your opinion man.
It is. Pokemon was as big as Mario. Its one or the other. Pokemon or Mario.
Pokemon. Any platform. Nuff said.
I was a Gameboy owner and I lived very well without Pokémon.
You missed the funnest game ever.
GoMhaaad Maybe. I think I might have been too old already by the time Pokémon came out though. There also wasn't any Pokémon around me. The little kids did it. As I understand it, the whole Pokémon craze was very much a social activity.
Penny Lane its never too late bro,i still play pokemon since 2000(with some breaks ofc) and i am 19.
bazukakias Ok ok, I gonna check it out on an emulator in time :)
well is never too late to get into it, and even you can understand all game mechanics
My first handheld console was the Gameboy colour. And the first game I got was Pokemon Crystal. I will never forget the countless hours of fun I spent on it.
I would say Tetris was number 1. People bought a gameboy just to play it.
Same goes for Pokemon. Tetris did get boring after a bit. Pokemon had tons of replay value
Yeah, Tetris is a classic for the Gameboy!
Marc 8 I actually think it's the exact opposite. I can never get enough tetris but pokemon is fun for a while but once your pokemon are pretty much unstoppable it starts to get boring.
