Serious Bicycle Crash On Group Ride Today

  • Jump to 4:00 minute point to see when our pace line came to a halt with a bad crash. Rider behind me got tangled up with a teammate who was merging in. Normally this doesn't happen. Poor rider got more injuries from his 24 MPH bicycle crash than some 100 MPH motorcycle crashes. My teammate has a brain hemorrhage, intubated, pneumothorax, multiple fractures and lots of road rash. 13 hours later dude is still in a medically induced coma for safety and healing. Poor guy never moved for 10+ minutes from his awkward crash position, was incoherent and moaned endlessly from the time of crash until the ambulance pulled away with him moaning on a stretcher. Zapped my enthusiasm and put a damper on the day.

Hope the riders recover quickly. A rotating paceline on a bike path seems to me to be inviting trouble. I know these days riders don't like to train on the roads, but riding that fast in a group trading pulls on a multi-use path is just nuts.

Good thing you immediately called 911. My worst crash was on a bike trail too, happened at noon, someone riding on my lane from opposite direction out of a blind curve, crashed head on, he faceplanted, lots of blood on body and face, I had a severe concussion and broken ribs, both of us were incapacitated of calling help. I rode home semi-conscious. Passers-by didn't care for calling help. Be careful out there

I just don't freakin' get it. It's supposed to be fun, and liberating, not some manic, macho marching fest.

Hi Starlitshadows, yes... this was on the Santa Ana River Trail headed to PCH and we were just northeast of the 405 freeway. I ride the Rio Hondo and SG River trails occasionally. I'm on the SG Trail for a little bit once a week on my way to the Montrose ride. No, I did not hear about the rider killed in Irwindale but no doubt I will hear soon through the grapevine. It's crazy how many riders get killed or seriously injured in crashes. Cars involved less than half the time. Not to bring you down but 8 weeks ago a gal rider friend of mine was hit from behind by driver on cellphone, she had many broken bones including broken neck but she is recovering quite well. Two weeks ago a local rider died in a solo mountain bike crash on dirt trails. Then a Norwegian rider killed on high speed descent a week ago. Bike riding is quite dangerous.

@@deanhough8993 yeah a guy stole a car from a dealership and was in a high speed chase. He hit the cyclist near the SG river crossing on Arrow by the dam. I was on the dam heading down when it happened. And sorry to hear about your other friend as well. Things like this just make me be more careful. I ride solo mostly on the river paths, bike lanes, back roads and low traffic times on mountain roads to reduce risk. Never have I thought there would be such a serious accident as this on the bike path though. Just makes me feel a bit more cautious. Wishing your friends well and stay safe out there.

He's got significant impairment of all kinds right now. He's able to communicate sort of but wow, what a bad situation. Meanwhile a buddy crashed in the Manhattan Beach Criterium a week ago. That guy broke his clavicle, hip, ribs and other bones, punctured lung, not good. 4 months ago gal friend on my team was rear-ended by a car where driver was looking at their cellphone. She was in the bike lane, minding her own business, broken neck, broken back, broken ankle, but she is making a good recovery after long stint in hospital. Bike riding is dangerous.

Thank you for your kindness and support. The poor guy was in a coma for 3 weeks and was just woke up and is able to walk a little starting a week ago. He's got a long road to recovery. Bike riding is dangerous stuff. A gal teammate was hit from behind 4 months ago by a woman driving while looking at her cellphone. My friend suffered a broken neck, broken back, broken ankle and some other stuff. My friend was riding straight in the bike lane. Fortunately she is recovering and able to mountain bike now. But a month ago a nearby mountain biker crashed and died on a dirt trail. There are easily 100 different groups riding on this trail at high speeds each day of the weekend. I'm often at 28 MPH or 30 MPH on this trial. This was a "slow" ride. Crazy how arm chair quarterbacks have all the answers when they know so little. Some people say go to the track. Really? I raced on the track for 5 years as a 1-2 and raced against pros and I won about 70 races, not to mention coming in top 3 at least 300 times. I raced a lot. There are many crashes on the track too. Most riders can't handle the demands of riding on a track. And then there's the fact that there are only 3 tracks in all of Southern California and maybe one track up toward San Francisco. There must be at least 100,000 serious bike riders in California and we're going to make them drive to one of those 4 tracks and squeeze onto them somehow? Brilliant. But again, thank you for your kindness and lack of passing judgement. And to all the know-it-alls shooting their mouths off about having Tour de France fever and attributing that for any kind of recklessness... I tried out for the 1984 Olympics to do the points race and missed making the Olympic team by one place, beaten by a guy that I beat half the time. Four years ago I bumped into 3 fast riders on this BIKE trail and one of them was extra strong. I rode with them for 10 miles and they couldn't drop me, even though they tried their hardest. We were going 31 MPH the whole way. Turns out he was a pro Tour de France racer (Kevin Vermaerke), we became casual friends on Strava and he said he was impressed that I was able to hang with them. Even more impressing that I was 62 years old when that happened. I also raced with Greg LeMond back in the day, so I must have something going on. But it seems that I could learn a thing or two from all these experts here in UA-cam land.

Multiple fractures but I will get more details soon. I saw the rearview camera video from the rider in front of him and it captured the moment he clipped the wheel in front of him. Rider in front decelerated a tiny bit, didn't wobble or anything. Unfortunately my buddy's front wheel barely touched my other buddy's rear wheel, overlapped by a quarter of an inch if even, and that's all it took.

I have ridden on many trails in Virginia and Washington State, and the only incident I have encountered was with 2 ladies walking onto the trail who were not following the rules. 1 must have been deaf or just plain stupid and was a fat B!
Where did this person that got injured come from? BC if u look at the video he is no where in it right before this incident occurred. So most likely he is behind them and did not signal his intentions or he came onto the trail the wrong way. So, who here knows whose fault this is? If you are passing someone on the trail you are supposed to say "On the Left" bc that is where r supposed to pass.

Rider behind me had a rear facing camera that caught the whole thing. My buddy clipped the wheel in front of him by 1/8th of an inch. Innocent mistake but he fought it and caused him to slap the ground really hard.
